Wonderful outpouring of support and love for this lovely girl’s family. Very, very sad.

Dear Sheena:
Got back late from the farm tonight. Charlie and everyone is just fine. Spent a while talking with Angela and catching up. She was happy to see Lola Mae looking so well after her dental surgery.
Charlie is looking wonderful, although he has to see the farrier as he threw a shoe (again). Willow and Archie look great and are still gaining weight. There is a new addition to the farm called Zoe and another TB called In Her Shoes. Don’t know if I mentioned her before. She is quite a beauty. Hudson Township is doing very well. She’s calmed down a lot and no longer gives Angela any trouble coming in at night.
Have linked a photo of In Her Shoes.
Gave them all hugs from you. Love and Hugs, JB

Indian Charlie Colt Tops Early at FT Session
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Tuesday, August 6, 2013 8:38 PM
An Indian Charlie colt from the family of champion Vindication was sold for $750,000 to light up the results board during the early portion of the second session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale Aug. 6.
The buyer was Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet Stable. The colt was bred in Kentucky by Hill ‘n’ Dale Equine Holdings.
Consigned by John Sikura’s Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, the colt is from the last crop of his deceased sire and was produced from the unraced Storm Cat mare Queenie Cat. Hill ‘n’ Dale enjoyed a strong sale as the other yearling it consigned at the sale, a Distorted Humor filly, sold for $1 million in the first session.

Hi Bluegrass girl, I am tickled that big money is being paid for pedigree of Indian Charlie. I remember seeing him was at Airdrie in Kentucky? We asked if they could bring him out so we could Really see him. The fella was happy to. When I learned just a few weeks later that he died as he had been battling cancer, I felt so bad that I had requested to make him MOVE for us just to take some pictures. There is a special spot within me for Indian Charlie.
hugs, Sally B

Just my opinion, but it would appear that the outrageous prices being paid for yearlings is definitely tipping the scales toward breeders at the expense of actual racing.

Another week of butterflies. Anxious for the beautiful Lea to do well in the Fourstardave. I ate Tums all last week worrying about MMM. Now another one to suffer anxieties over. I know I get obsessive about certain horses but it is only one or two. You guys are great to listen to me when I go on and on about them. Thanks for listening.

There is no disgrace running second to Wise Dan. Dan is an amazing horse, very aggressive and totally focused on winning. Dare I say it? Frankel might have had serious trouble racing against Dan. And Dan runs on all surfaces. Downpours and lightning bolts cannot stop Dan. There’s no whining from his peeps about the condition of the turf. He just goes for it. Love you Dan.

To get any value, I’ll have to bet show this time Round. We know the winner, but then again, so does everyone else.

It’s really special to be able to follow a horse that you’ve seen in person Shirlee. I was reading about him on Bloodhorse.com this morning. I think not knowing/caring about Wise Dan is EXACTLY the right attitude :-)

Here is my one and only story about Kurt Russell. I have a friend named Cathy, whose father was a writer for the old The Waltons TV show. She invited me to join her for a Christmas party one year at her father’s condo in Laguna Beach. Got there about seven and she excused herself to make the rounds, after which she introduced me to everyone. The Emmy was on display and everything was quite fancy, so I just kinda hung around on the fringes admiring all of the framed awards on the wall. There was another man doing the same thing so I struck up a conversation with him. Told a joke or two, he did, too, and we were enjoying ourselves when Cathy came back to join us. She said, “I see you’ve met Kurt Russell, so I guess I will not have to introduce you.” He must have noticed the look on my face and laughed. I told him I was sorry I didn’t recognize him and he said something to the affect that it was good to have a talk with someone who didn’t want anything from him and I said are you sure of that, and we laughed again. We all started talking and Cathy said that ‘I knew this guy when. Many a time I cooked dinner for him and my brother when neither one had a dollar in his pocket.” Kurt acknowledged that it was true. The rest of the story is that Kurt and her brother were kid actors together for Disney and appeared in a few films together. When Kurt aged a bit, say 18 or so, no one wanted to hire him. He got his big break playing Elvis in a TV movie, for which he had to audition for the part. After that came Escape from New York, and the rest is history. He remains the only actor to appear with Elvis in a film and play the part of Elvis in a movie. He was a kid in It Happened at the World’s Fair, in which hew kicked Elvis in the shins. I was inspired to write this after seeing him today in Dreamer. Just a great guy.
Max
TC. Good story as ever. Like Kurt and his films especially when he plays Snake.
Terry Crow
Max-Even though he considers playing Elvis his big break, he knows that Escape From New York is the one which really put him back in the game.

Always a pleasure, dear lady.

Great story TC and thanks.
Do you remember a movie The One and Only Original Family Band?
Kurt Russell played in it along with Lesley Ann Warren, Buddy Ebsen.
That is where he would meet Goldie Hawn for the very first time, she had a small part in it. Funny many years later they would become a couple.
Terry Crow
You are correct on all counts. He was actually at the party I described because he and Goldie do not travel in the same circles. She was at what he called a Hollywood party.
Ann NC
Thanks, TC GP. Dreamer is one of my favorite movies. Gosh, we could have brought the popcorn over! Kurt Russell is great. I loved him w/ Goldie in Overboard? I think that is the title. She falls from her big yacht, he rescues her and they try to raise those unruly rugrats. Hilarious movie!
Terry Crow
Yes, I remember that film. Dreamer is one of my favorites and I was seeing it for maybe the fifth time. It is my daughter’s favorite movie. She is a big Dakota Fanning fan, or was. I don’t know about now. A while back we were posting about Kris Kristofferson’s acting ability. Did a good job in this one.
shirleeinindy
Terry, Did I read somewhere that Dreamer was loosely based on the story of Mariahs Storm?
Terry Crow
That is true. Mariah’s Storm had the same kind of injury that Sonador in the movie supposedly had and came back to win the Ladies’ Classic in the BC.
Celeste_in_TX
How very cool! Thanks for sharing your stories with the rest of us. I’ve always been a fan of Kurt Russell.
Terry Crow
Glad you enjoyed it. I had almost forgotten about it, since it happened in 1994.
Maryp NY
Terry,
I enjoy your “blasts from the past” very much. You’re a good storyteller and full of interesting ancedotes as well as the jokes you generously share with us. I noticed your email address name?? not so.
Thanks much.
hugs,
Maryp
Terry Crow
Maryp-Thank you. However, the email address is all too true. I’ll add one thing to the story but it is about Cathy’s father, not Kurt Russell. His name is John McGreevey so if you ever see his name on the credits as writer you will know. He wrote a screenplay about the life of Roy Rogers and sold it to a studio. It is my understanding that the studio had country singer Clint Black set to star but the film never got produced. Too bad, Black surely looks like Rogers.
Ann NC
Clint and Roy = the best smiles ever.
Randy
Terry, you have the BEST stories… I’m rapidly becoming a real fan and I think you should consider writing a book about all the amazing experiences you’ve had and the fascinating people you’ve met… I’d definitely buy it!
I’ve heard that Kurt Russell’s first love was actually baseball even after he’d started acting, and he wanted to play professionally but a career ending injury unfortunately put a stop to that. I guess baseball’s loss was Hollywood’s gain. Dreamer is my very favorite of all his movies, although I also really like the one about the 1980 US Olympic hockey team.
Terry Crow
Randy-You are correct. When Kurt was starring in Disney movies as a kid after rehearsals he would be taken by helicopter to the venues where his team was playing so he could participate. It is my understanding that he had major league talent before the injury cut everything short. Miracle, the movie about the 1980 Olympic hockey team was kind of bittersweet as the subject of the film, Herb Brooks, died in an auto accident right before the film was released. Kurt’s son Wyatt was playing hockey at the time.

Hi everyone and kisses to my Big Girl and her two boys!
My mum’s cat had to be put down early last week. I’ve been running back & forth to the vet with him over the last 3 weeks, so I’ve hardly been at the computer except infrequently. Mum is 94 and a shut-in: losing Cedric has just been devastating for her.
Great discussion & exchange here, as usual. On the positive side, I did LOVE the talk about famous t.v. & movie horses. FURY and MY FRIEND FLICKA were my absolute favourite shows as a little girl. I recently bought some of the FURY shows (on DVD) and when I play one, I go right back in time to little horse-crazed me. For those interested, there are a few of the original Roy Rogers up on NETFLIX.
I have a question. When an Australian horse dies and my friend Bronwen Healy posts about it, she posts “Vale (horse’s name).” What does “vale” refer to? Is it “vale of tears” or ….? And is that the commonly used term in Australia? (I’m asking because I’ve asked Broni a number of times but when she responds, she always forgets to answer! And, we have lost 2 Canadian champions in a relatively short time: Nipissing {winner of 2013 Woodbine Oaks}and Strait of Dover {winner of the 2012 Queen’s Plate} & I would like to write about them on THE VAULT. I was thinking of calling it “VALE Nipissing & Strait of Dover” but I don’t want to use the word when I’m not sure what it means.
Hugs to all
Max
Abigail. I took Latin in high school. It means goodbye.
Kathy R.
Dear Abigail: Agree with Max – my understanding is it is a bidding farewell – to think of it in poetic terms. Certainly not all that commonly used here in Australia – the vernacular would be “kicking the bucket”, or “dropped off the twig”. But “Vale” sounds much better. Cheers, KathyR.
Max
KathyR Never heard that phrase about dropping off the twig before now. I will add that to my list of Aussie things to say.
BTW has Bruce received any more gifts of crocs, etc?
Abigail_1849
Thanks all. I took Latin in HS too, Max, but didn’t recall the word…mind you, this was in the 1960’s. LOL! But thanks everyone. Now that I know, I’ll definitely use it in my piece on THE VAULT later this month.
Watched the Funny Cide clip — wash’t it great seeing him? He looks wonderful! Oh, how I wanted him to win the Triple Crown….
Saw this on my FB home page & thought you might all enjoy it. Wendy Wooley, wife of Matt, prof. photographers, followed 4 foals for Adena Springs from newborn to 18 months. Here’s her record of a Somethingaboutlaura-Bernardini filly born in 2012 who’s quite the character! ENJOY!

Kathy R.
Dear Max: News of “interesting” gifts for Bruce has gone quiet: may have something to do with the election running (we vote in early September) and that seems to send everyone a little scatty. On a serious note, two races (Melbourne and Sydney) will be named for Simone Montgomerie, and a number of our senior jockeys have donated their earnings for the week to the fund raised in her memory. Am very proud of the racing community. Cheers, KathyR.

Dear Bluegrass Girl: I agree that John McNair knows his stuff – it’s just that I’m a real wimp when it comes to my favourites – especially when they’ve been through as much as Hay List. Nick Kanneigeter (the vet) is also a real character. He used to have a little spot on Skysportsradio talking about horse issues – they stopped the piece when Andrew Bensley took over the program because Bensley has a very squirmy stomach and couldn’t take the discussion about surgery, blood and guts (as Nick would say). But the stories on pus became legend on the program, and even non-racing folk would tune in just to hear those stories. But Bensley just couldn’t handle it. He’s still on holidays in the UK (attending a wedding) and his latest skite is that he met, and patted Frankel! Hugs, KathyR.

BGG, You must have read my mind. I was wondering when Orb was going to come to Saratoga. I wonder if he had some illness or injury we were not told about as he went from the Belmont straight to Fair Hill and has been there for quite some time.
Also, read on Bloodhorse.com that Gary Stevens went to England yesterday to participate in the International Jockey Competition. Do you think maybe he took Johnny V with him????

Cyberspace Atwitter With ”Talamo Takeover” At Del Mar
Joe Talamo is a fine, young race rider. Joe Talamo is also – being young and sharp – very attuned to all things digital, like Twitter and Facebook and Instagram, the things that fill up the new world of cyberspace.
So who better, then, to take on – and “takeover” – an assignment at Del Mar to rock its world for a day on-line in the world of Social Media.
Remember this one, hash tag hipsters — #TalamoTakeover.
On Thursday (8/8) Del Mar will, in effect, hand the wheel over to Talamo as he spends his day filling the track’s Twitter account with his daily doings – large and small, indoors and out, old and new – all while going through a day-in-the-life of a highly successful Thoroughbred jockey at the highly competitive Del Mar meeting.
