Thank you BGG
I have been hoping we would get a new blog update before I posted this reminder but this seems like an appropriate place to add my comment.
Cappers are you ready >>>>>>>
We have the first race this Saturday.
We should be receiving an email Thursday afternoon that will have information on the first race. I believe you have 10 minutes prior to the race to make or change your selection. For you new players some information is provided about each horse entered.
If you don’t see the email by late Thursday evening I suggest you check your spam mail.

I’m ready to get going and hope we all do better this year. Maybe even win something??!! You never know.

@sheena–This was originally written about the Chicago Cubs baseball team but you might be able to use it. I am not familiar with the sporting teams in the UK, but it would go something like this–It was so foggy on the field yesterday, (insert name here), couldn’t even see who was beating them.
carol in arkansas
My poor Cubs…at least they kicked hubby’s Giants last week
Terry Crow
carol-afraid the Cubs are going to be the butt of a lot of jokes this year. When was the last year they won the World Series?
carol in arkansas
like 1903 or something like that…had a chance a few yrs ago…but a fan messed that up…of course…but love em anyway…and Wrigley is always worth a visit
Terry Crow
I remember that well. His name was Steve something. Even Law and Order based a plot line on the incident but in that one the fan was killed. I recall laughing to myself when it happened and thinking now the Cubs will probably lose. When I was growing up the Cubs had a minor league team in Los Angeles in the 40s and 50s and the ballpark was also called Wrigley Field. It was named the Angels and when the current Angels came in as an expansion team in 1961 they kept the name. Chuck Connors was my favorite player for the old minor league team. He signed autographs for anyone who wanted one.
Marshall (NC broad)
YAY, Cubs!!
Gotta love’em! One of these days maybe the “curse” will be broken. I have never been to Chicago, but I really like Wrigley Field — it’s a classic.

Wow, Life is Sweet- and her precious filly by Tapit. Thanks for sharing. We do think of her also and remember her from her glory days on the race track. So that is how a gray baby “starts out” . Very pretty.
Thanks to all at Lane’s End for the shop updates and photos.
Casey – what a glorious day at Del Mar. A memory forever. You lived it with all of us and we were there thanks to your recounting of your perfect day with Paynter and connections.
Judy – hope little LM is doing better today
Having gone to a few early morning workouts at Del Mar and touched the racetrack surface, it truly is strange stuff to touch. I try to do that at every racetrack I’ve ever been to, just to get a feel of the dirt or running surface. Dirt is different that is for sure.
I guess some might think I’m a bit strange too….. but I just want to see/feel the difference and of course there is.
Blessings to Sarbonne and his journey towards retirement.
Hope it continues to proceed and he is safe forever.
Have a wonderful day everyone.

Happy news about Sarbonne. Glorious Goodwood wasn’t that good. The weather was awful and the ground looked like mush. At least on tv it did.

Sarbonne is retiring to a three-acre boiling hot plot of dirt in AZ, and will occupy that land with 33 other horses? This is retirement? This is what he deserves after being a Moss horse that was tossed? I see this as cruelty, not compassion. Attack me all you want, but whoever Ashton is, she has to be confronted with the fact that she is doing this horse a great disservice.
casey
Here’s the deal Skip- First of all, I have written this to Trina as well. I live in So. Cal and we have a similar environment for our horses as does Tierra Madre. (Only we’re not as hot). We don’t have grass pastures, we have dry lot. We don’t have a lot of issues that horses on grass pastures have- parasites don’t really live in dry conditions, so we don’t usually have worm loads that pastured horses have. I had an OTTB- from the time he was 6 until he died at 21, and he lived in a stall. I would turn him out in the arena and seriously, after 15 minutes he wanted to be back in his stall.
Back to Sarbonne- he has been in a stall (at the most 14 x 14, but more likely 12 x 12) pretty much since he went into training as a long yearling. When he was at Barn 55, the only grass he saw was the little patch that was planted for Zenyatta. He got out daily for his gallops and works, but the rest of the time, he spent in his stall. Now, mathematically, an acre is 43,560 sq ft. A 12 x 12 is 144 sq ft. and a 14 x 14 is 196 sq ft. Divide that 196 into 43,560 and you get 73. 73 14 x 14 stalls could be fit on an acre. I called the supervisor at the boarding stable where I kept my horses to see how many acres it was, and how many horses could be housed there. The answer was 6 acres and 140 horses. That 6 acres included 3 arenas, 2 round pens, a dressage court. The majority of the stalls were 12 x 24 fully covered pipe corrals, there was a barn with 12 x 12 box stalls and 6-8 partially covered 24 x 24 stalls. There was also a tack/feed store, a hay barn, parking lot, several storage containers and a couple workshops, and a manure pile. My point is that much can be done on small amounts of space. Is it Lane’s End? no, but then again, Sarbonne has not been used to anything other than a 12 x 12 stall. Having a large pen and an arena to play in, the chance to be retrained and made into a riding horse and most importantly, other equine friends to socialize with is pretty incredible. Remember, he won’t miss what he’s never had. My TB was happiest in his stall visiting with his neighbors.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Casey, thank-you for that! Very informative explanation.
Maryp NY
Casey,
I am not a horse owner just a lover of them and I thank you for your keen description of space and retirement for horses. I am sure all any of them need is a place where care and good nourishment is given to them and they have room to move around with the company of others.
I am very happy for Sarbonne and hope his future is bright.
sue and tony
Casey…great explanation of Sarbonne’s new digs. We think he’s going to love being “just a horse”.
casey
this isn’t a description of Sarbonne’s new digs, it’s a description of what a boarding facility was able to fit on 6 acres in the middle of Orange County, CA. I’ve not been to Tierra Madre, but I’ve taken the time to look at the website. Much can be done with a small space, so don’t be haters. CA has something like the 3rd largest horse population in the country and guess what, we don’t have acreage like they do in KY. We do what we can with what we have and our horses don’t miss having pastures because they’ve never had them
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Terry am no fan of the football teams over here have often watched racing in foggy weather hardly knowing one horse from another!! one funny comment I did hear””As you may have guessed this was a long time ago when most of us still had B and W tvs hugsSheena
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Terry Don’t know what happened there the commentator said if you are watching in black and white no 8 is the player in the yellow jersey seemed funny at the time!!!!hugs Sheena
Terry Crow
sheena-funny stuff. It reminded me of the period when Hollywood Park had harness racing at night in the 80s. This is actually the reason that the lights were put in there. Anyway, at times the fog would roll in and all you could see was the start/finish line. They had patrol judges out on the course relaying to the track announcer where the horses were. He would then say I’ve been told that so and so is leading and people would start yelling like they could see it. Who knows what really went on during those races. In the old days in Las Vegas they would use a western union ticker tape machine to call the races and people would shout just like they could see the horses.
Max
TC. This sounds great. I wish that I had been there. I used to go to harness races all of the time with my father. Don’t much like watching them on tv. You really have to be there.

okay, got it to load and I did see myself at the 44 second mark. If you look over Mr. Zayat’s right shoulder, you’ll see a blond woman looking away from the camera, with a purse and camera. That would be me. I was looking for Jane & James, Lisa and Stephanie. During the race, I wasn’t in the box with them. Bob asked me to leave because there wasn’t room (in his words, he had to ask Jill, his wife, to leave too). Anyway, apparently he got an earful from Ahmed for making me leave (according to Ahmed). As far as who was who- you know Justin. Ashley was in the green dress, and Emma, the youngest child was next to Ashley. In the box, the young man sitting at the front, was Benjamin. Joann was next to Ahmed.. The woman sitting next to Emma in the box was Vee, their nanny.

A Birthday Poem for Diana Stuart (Diastu in Tempe)
(August 1, 2013)
As part of her birthday celebration,
Diana’s planning for the first time ever
A most special endeavor,
Deserving of an ovation:
She’ll seek to sit astride
Her OTTB Hoot
And him then to ride.
Before she Hoot does mount,
I think
She’ll take a deep drink
From that fount
Which is said to rejuvenate,
And I pray that refreshing libation
Will Father Time propitiate
And thus facilitate
Her feat of equitation.
Dear Diana, for all you do
To rescue
Countless felines, and equines too,
We do you salute!
We wish you the happiest of birthdays
Accompanied by Hoot’s joyful neighs,
And we wish you many more to boot.
Happy birthday, Diana, and many, many happy returns!
PS. For those who would like to read Diana’s poem from 2012 which discussed her love, as she put it, for “the four H’s” (horses, hotrods, helicopters, and hombres with hot bods) here’s the link:

Sheena. I watched the race. Very impressive win by Brown Panther. Mt Athos who was also in that race was in another race with Moosie earlier this spring. Moosie came in second, so that you can see that Moosie is a high calibre runner and can race if he tries. Richard Hannon or Toronado should encourage him. I wonder if he still has his sessions with his horse psychologist?

He was my favorite pick for Triple Crown winner this century. I was really pulling for him, but Birdstone bumped him as a fresh horse in the Belmont. Alas, my other favorite which occurred the previous year was Funnycide — he got beaten in the Belmont, too. They both had good back-stories. I was exceedingly disappointed when Smarty’s Belmont run was spoiled, though. YAY, Smarty!!

It’s Post Time Article A Race Steeped in History (Whitney)
July 31, 2013 | By Jon White Xpressbet
http://www.xpressbet.com/ReadPostTime?id=7168
“No. 2 Secretariat did run in the Whitney. But he did not win it. That’s because 40 years ago, in one of the most famous upsets in the history of the sport, Onion won the Whitney, with Secretariat second as the 1-10 favorite.”
“Whitney Day was hot and humid,” Capps wrote, “and the track was still drying out from the previous day’s heavy rain. Although labeled fast, the track was deep enough that jockeys in earlier races were avoiding the rail.
“Secretariat banged his head on the starting-gate door just before the race, never a good omen, then broke more slowly than usual, dropping back to fourth as the field headed into the first turn. Turcotte decided to save ground and slipped him to the inside rail. As they headed into the backstretch, they started to pick up horses, though in a more workmanlike manner than usual.”
Excellent article with lots of good info on Secretariat.
