OMG I’m flipping out about Take Charge Indy. Was watching the race and saw the whole thing happen, waited to hear the results. God Bless Gary Stevens for managing to pull him up, hopefully they can save him for stud. Please pray for him and go to this candle site someone set up. http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=eng&gi=TCI

SARBONNE ALERT! Need Bon Bon fans to help spread the word. Plans have changed slightly about Bon Bon’s retirement and could use some help. Ashton (Bon Bon’s guardian angel!:-) will give more details later, but for now, we are asking for donations for some of his needs. Here is a link with details:
http://db.tt/JcZ2XiNO
If you can help spread the word, it would be appreciated. Sharon Peck — Sharon In Seattle — is the Treasurer, and all funds received will go to secure Sarbonne’s retirement future.
As many know, Kari Bussell, Ashton’s momma, was a huge fan of Bon Bon, and this was one of her last wishes before she passed on.

Where and how do we donate?

Opps…we just saw the link.

Thanks for the information Ann Maree. There is another blog post still “going” at this point (see “older” at the bottom of this page), and some people are there rather than here if you want to copy and post it again.

King of the Palace
Sean Clancy THIS IS HORSE RACING Published on Saturday, 27 July 2013
Mike Smith danced through the crowd after the Jim Dandy. Already late for a plane, the California-based jockey signed autographs on the fly, posed for pictures while trying to keep moving and then stopped.
“He’s a different horse now,” Smith said. “That was a 24 first quarter and he sat off it.
I was well within myself, he was very comfortable, could have went faster if need be, could have went slower if I had to.”
Amazing what three months will do.

Points Offthebench Shows His Game in Crosby (includes Must Watch Video)
By Jack Shinar The Blood-Horse Updated: Sunday, July 28, 2013 9:31 PM
Points Offthebench made his first venture into stakes company a successful one, winning the $300,000 Bing Crosby Stakes (gr. I) (VIDEO), over Goldencents in a terrific fight to the wire July 28 at Del Mar.
The California-bred son of Benchmark , coming into the race with four wins from six starts for trainer Tim Yakteen, was no surprise in spite of the big jump in class. He was bet to 3-1 odds while facing a field that included Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) Goldencents and grade I winners Jimmy Creed and Comma to the Top.
Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith took Points Offthebench wide coming into the stretch and he swept past Jimmy Creed in the drive. Goldencents, in a pocket behind the front-runners, waited for room to angle out and quickly challenged Points Offthebench but came up just short in a terrific finish.

Game on Dude getting Joel Rosario for Pacific Classic.
Mike Smith committed to Royal Delta same day at Saratoga .
Terry Crow
Mike must be counting on Royal Delta for the Breeders Cup otherwise he would not blow off Bob Baffert and GOD.
shirleeinindy
Terry, Do you think Mike might be thinking about Palace Malice for the Classic? I hate to see someone else ride “The Dude” but he can’t ride him and Rd. Mike does seem to do awfully well on some of the fillies and mares.
Terry Crow
It appears that Palace Malice is better suited for the distance. Nobody would know better than MIke who rides both.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
And now this leaves my Dullahan (♥♥♥) without a jockey for this event!!
Terry Crow
Sandy-Dullahan is an artificial track specialist. Santa Anita is a dirt track. I expect that he will be pointed to one of the turf races where riders will be available..
Pati-College Girl
That was my initial thought as well.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Folks, Dullahan WON this race last year. Dale Romans says they will come up with “plan B” (according to Bloodhorse).
Terry Crow
Dullahan won the Pacific Classic at Del Mar last year, beating GOD in the process. Del Mar is the most artificial of he artificial tracks, a true horse for course layout. I’m sure Romans is referring to the Breeder’s Cup, but I could be wrong. Can’t see him running in the BC Classic.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Right! The Pacific Classic is the race we’re talking about here (at least that’s what most of us were talking about :-)
Terry Crow
Sorry, got off the track when Shirlee asked about Palace Malice. I would say that Dullahan will probably repeat in the Pacific Classic, if he runs, and any number of riders could win with him. As for the Breeders Cup, he would be better off competing on the turf.

The year Mike Smith is having is unreal. Far fewer mounts than anyone in top 10,
but his avg $$$ per mount towers over all others.
Bobby Frankel used to ride Eddie Delahoussaye because he said no one then
was better “with the money down.” Smith wears crown now. #delmar
Terry Crow
Eddie D was good, but, if you were to compare, no one is in Mike Smith’s class when it comes to money rides.
Terry Crow
I should say that no current rider is in Mike’s class in the big races. But they all have to take a back seat to Willie Shoemaker.

Bluegrass Girl, Thank you for the update on Oxbow. So glad it does not appear serious.
Gary like Mike seems to put the welfare of the horse first ahead of winning the race. I guess that comes from years of experience and the fact that neither of these two have to prove themselves to anyone.
My sweet Muchie is going in the Whitney this weekend. I already have nervous butterflies for him. Then Lea is going against Wise Dan in the Fourstardave. Don’t think he can beat Dan but hope he makes a good showing for himself.

BG. Grateful for this news. Admire Oxbow and Paynter and want to see them both do well and be healthy.
Worth checking out the video of Paynter after the San Diego on Pati’s Facebook, Paynter Nation. Paynter was really worked up about losing that race. He’s now done with losing. Watch out for the next race. Power up Ox and Paynter.

I am confused too. I am not surprised Mike has chosen to stay with Royal Delta. He is faithful to his girls and a smart man with a smart agent. Love GOD but Mike is not BB’s first choice jockey for his owners. Royal Delta deserves first consideration. Plus I had wondered about his mount for the classic. What a choice he might have, GOD, RD or PM.
Pati-College Girl
I’m sure many jockeys would love to be in Mike’s position.

Good afternoon all. My hardcopy Bloodhorse came in the mail today and I enjoy reading it immensely. A very nice response by a reader complimenting Cynthia Holt on her beautifully written letter about what Secretariat meant – written in the anniversary edition I believe. High Hoof to you Cynthia. Isn’t it nice to hear from another Secretariat fan that treasured your letter.
Have a wonderful day.

Just want to second the motion about Cynthia’s wonderful letter re her experience at the 1973 Belmont and Secretariat’s big win. We’ve all read her beautiful words here on the blog, and the letter was absolutely gripping (I felt like I was there). Glad to see that they are printing some responses (not mine, apparently :-(

Janet – I personally enjoyed visiting Our Mims another rescue/retirement home for mares. Jeanne ( not certain about spelling of last name) -but there is a website. Located out in Paris Ky. fun backroads . These lovely ladies of a certain age are a sight to see.
Go to Kentucky.com too and also if you want a lovely Bed and breakfast right out on a real farm ( Goldencents breeder) has a beautiful and inviting B&B. Next time I go I will definitely try to stay there. They also have a website. There are many in Versailles, Paris and Lexington. It’s really nice to have that experience and they oftentimes will help you arrange visits and put you in touch with the various thoroughbred farms.
If you have never been it is the experience of a lifetime. I’ve been twice and loved every minute. A week went by too fast.
