Good morning, all–just have to share this story of how animals exhibit very creative ways of saving lives. Mutually beneficial to animal and human.

What a great story Barbara – Bob is adorable! I can’t wait to get the book :-) Thanks for sharing :-)
Terry Crow
Agree. I would love to get a high five from Bob.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Barbara This is a truly wonderful tale of how the love of a cat totally changed a person’s life I heard of James and Bob a couple of years ago in your cat magazine and got the book last year He’s written another one now “the World according to Bob”he’s been on a lot of TV programmes over here and is a huge hit on twitter and facebook a must-read!!! hugs Sheena

Wonderful–thanks, Sheena!

Hi Z fans…..Wow Wise Dan is giving 10-12 lbs to his rivals!! Hope he can hold on at the finish. He is a great champion, if anyone beats him, my sentimental vote would be forJS’s horse, Mr. Commons. He would have to run the best race of his life to do so. Should be a good race.
Terry Crow
I hate to say it, but Mr. Commons has been a big disappointment. Maybe he will turn things around, but I wouldn’t want the rent money to be riding on him.
Max
Wise Dan probably eats way more than 10 lbs a day. He can handle that weight. He’s all beastly muscle. Any horse who can flip a falling jockey back to the saddle while on the gallop can easily carry 10 lbs. You go Dan.
Have to agree with TC. Commons seems to find ways to lose.
Terry Crow
I’m not sure, but isn’t Wise Dan rated as the world’s best horse by Timeform?
Max
TC. Black Caviar is still #1 at 136 as rated by Timeform. Dan is 3rd at 134 behind Cirrus des Aigles. Dan is #1 in the US. If he gets by Saratoga, he’ll head to Woodbine where he can chew up those Euros who come for the Woodbine Mile. His win last year was beautiful. The Woodbine turf course is the biggest in North America. Dan excels on that wide course, and apparently loves the travel to Toronto. May have some horsey friends there.
Terry Crow
Max-Thanks for the info. This may sound like a stupid question (check my email handle), but why is Black Caviar still being rated?
Max
TC. I think it’s because of her relatively recent date of retirement in Australia. I get somewhat mixed up with the reverse racing seasons in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, but it’s because of that. BC will probably lose that top spot by the end of our fall racing season. There are also big European races coming up later this year like the Arc. If not, Timeform will not keep her there after the end of Northern Hemisphere racing, although technically we race basically all year somewhere in North America.
Terry Crow
Thank you, Max. A most helpful explanation.

Hey cappers, Remember that Saratoga is “the graveyard of favorites”! I love Wise Dan and I think Mr Commons has it in him to do well, Lea is popular. What does that all mean?? The 30-1 shot will win (if there is one)!!!LOL!!
Made my picks and I’m sticking with it. Good luck to all.
carol in arkansas
Dont think WD is beatable….but that’s why the y run the race
Terry Crow
Saratoga is indeed a graveyard for favorites but at least it is not as bad as Del Mar. Wise Dan figures to be in the exacta box. It is hard to see him any worse than second.
shirleeinindy
Don’t you all forget Lea. He might not beat Dan but he should be right in the mix. If it were a beauty contest, he would win hands down.
Safe trip to all. In the long run, a safe trip is the real goal.

Dear Mary:
So true. Good luck to you too. Love and Hugs, JB
Pati-College Girl
I’m show betting and hoping one of my “big price” boys get home, so I’m playing show on one of the horses under 10-1. Won’t say who.
Ann NC
Spill the beans, kid! Ha! Just kidding w/ ya, Caz Girl.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
I think this is a tough one so I will probably take Pati’s route of picking someone to place or show. Hard to see how Wise Dan can lose . . . . and yet . . . . Also hard not to be pulling for John’s horse even though it would be an enormous surprise if he won. Decisions, decisions, decisions – I’m so impressed with those of you who can make one this early and stick with it!
carol in arkansas
Just because I whined about Cigar hiding from me…..there he is….up front
Max
carol. Just saw our Cigar. Great thrill to see him.
As to Dan, he’s like Z. She never lost a race even that one time when she did not finish first. Z fans keep increasing. Poor Blame is the subject of death rumors.
Terry Crow
Cigar had his winning streak broken at Del Mar. His connections should never have raced him there. A race at Del Mar is the closest Z ever came to losing.
Max
TC. His loss there seems to have enraged Paynter. I hope his anger galvanizes into a win his next time out. However, the fact that he’s alive is a victory in itself. Winning is secondary to that.
Terry Crow
Max-You are so correct. If he was my horse, I would never had run him at Del Mar, with all due respect to Mr. Zayat. However, considering that it was his first distance race off the layoff, and at a strange track at that, his race was super. If he were to run in the Breeders Cup, that would complete a storybook comeback with a movie in the future. I expect him to run huge next time out.
Ann NC
Max and Carol,
My sweet young friends gave Cigar some special attention yesterday. They also delivered a message from us ……Smile for the Camera Champ.
It was reported, he enjoyed the pats on his nose and whinnied when it was time for good byes.

Ann NC. I’ve missed out on something important here. Moose now has a baby? When did this happy event take place? How is Goose doing? I am not really so surprised by missing out on this news. For months I thought that Lola Mae was JudyB’s sister.
Ann NC
Max, so cute about our, JB and her Lola Mae.
JB, thanks. Hugs will be delivered.
Moosie had a baby girl end of July. The baby calf is the spitting image of, Moose w/ a big white triangle face marking….moo,mooooo.
Goose spends most days in he farm pond and remains stubborn!
Terry Crow
I missed this news, too. Should have had its own blog page.
Max
Ann NC. Thanks for this interesting news of the new arrival. I’m going to have to pay more attention. I’ve always liked Moose and Goose. Goose might be taking on a Big D personality?

Ann NC
Thanks. I just adore the Hovis diary. The Destroyer!!!!! Jump on, Hovis.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks as always to Sheena via Max for our Friday treat. Wish he would come over here and meet his fans. The subject of Burghley came up on his “We Love Hovis . . . ” FB page. His Mum (thanks Karen!) provided the following clarification:
“Burghley is a very famous three day event here. William Fox Pitt is a rather talented eventer regularly on the British eventing team. A three day event is dressage, cross country and show jumping. It’s amazing to watch and the horses and riders have to master three disciplines. Like the Kentucky rolex in the states.”
Apparently Hovis has been pestering Mr. Fox Pitt to take him to this event :-)
Terry Crow
Not ever having had any, I can see that it might be difficult dealing with fans. Hovis is paying for being a celebrity.
Max
TC. I beg to differ. You have plenty of fans right here. I’m one. I’m still laughing at the horse ventriloquist. Whenever I think of that joke, I laugh.
Terry Crow
Max-You are too kind. Now that my email is straightened out I will be working on some more jokes. Never realized what a hassle trying to get a new address could be.

If you all get a chance, check on Curlin’s facebook page. They do a horse of the day along with a photo and he has some great “Good Morning” photos of himself.

@Randy-I left a reply to you on the last page. If someone directs a comment to me, I always try to answer it. I know a few things about Kurt through my friend Cathy who has told me a lot of stuff. I especially like him because he knows what it is like to be down. Of course, I will emphasize that it is Cathy that knows him, not I.

Thanks Terry, I found it.

St Nicholas Abbey Remains in Good Form
By Claire Novak, The Blood-Horse Updated: Friday, August 9, 2013 3:20 PM
Multiple group/grade I winner St Nicholas Abbey remains in good form at Fethard Equine Hospital and recently had his fiberglass cast replaced, the latest update from owner Coolmore Stud said Aug. 9.
The 6-year-old son of Montjeu underwent two major operations—one for a life-threatening fracture and one after colicking due to caecal shutdown—after injuring his pastern on trainer Aidan O’Brien’s Ballydoyle gallops July 23. He had surgery on the fracture July 24 at Fethard and underwent an operation for the colic issue two days later.

KathyR & Sheena, now I am confused. Thought that England had won Ashes.
Then I read the Telegraph is doing Ashes live. As our comic Jerry Seinfeld said during his cricket skit, “That’s a wicked googly! ” BGG
P.S. Yes, I know that is a Bosie, a type of delivery. Still like the expression.
The Telegraph tweet
#Ashes live: Every over, every wicket, every Aussie grumble
#Ashes: The fourth Test between England and Australia has just begun.
