Dear Sheena,
We live in a world where some of the people are capable of horrendous acts. We have to look for the positive wherever we can find it. We sure see a lot of it here!
Loved that video of Monty and Deri. Feeling bad for the people at the Dyfi with all the birds gone now. Safe trip for them! I’m so glad that Theba and Tom will scatter Joey’s ashes in the garden. I, too, hope the findings on the cause of death will be conclusive. RIP sweet, sweet Joey. Mango’s conversation was indeed tear-jerking. What a dear little dog and such special furparents. Still have to check on Fubu. Bless him…I hope he places in the contest. A lot of people love him a lot, so maybe…I hope Jack O had a good birthday. My own precious Holly turned 13 on Monday. I call this her “birthday week.” Glad to read that Angel Rose has improved. You’re right, Angel Rose is a very sweet little girl. Enjoy your days ahead. Especially the racing! Have a great day. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy.

Dear Sheena,
Saw Fubu’s video. He sure loves Sour Apple suckers! Too bad they can’t give him some of his cat food in sucker form!

I have never had a dog, and grew up naturally afraid of the ones that barked and growled at me on my walk to school, at 5 yrs. old. Then in my late teens, a friend’s big dog tried to mate with my leg, which my friends found funny, but I just found embarrassing. And years ago when I was a mail carrier, I had to use my satchel to protect myself from a charging dog, and a pack of 5 dogs trying to circle around me.
So although I have never wanted a dog, three weeks ago, a stray took up residence in my driveway, behind some bushes and a junk car my brother has parked temporarily. She is a pitbull mom — her teats were all swollen and hanging down, but have been drying up since. Someone apparently cruelly took her away from her puppies, and dumped her in my neighborhood. I was too afraid to do anything except talk to both my neighbors who have dogs. One couple tried to introduce her to their female pitbull, who was not friendly to the idea. So they can’t take her, but are feeding and watering her for me. Other attempts to find her “a home” have not worked out.
She is such a sweetheart, and more afraid than anything else. She hasn’t made a hostile face or move at all. When a chihuahua wandered by the front yard, she came bounding out to greet him, he put his paws on her shoulders, which someone told me is a dominance move, but she didn’t react to it at all, just tried to romp around and play with him, until he left, and she quickly went and hid back in my drive.
Another neighbor came and said she was worried about her “running loose”, and thought maybe they should call the police, but I asked her to wait another couple of days. I do not want to call the pound, as most likely she would just be killed. I decided I could let her into my yard, so she’ll be safe, and continue to look for “her new home”.
I know someone who runs a rescue, but only for herding dogs, not pitbulls. A couple of friends at work who have dogs sent me info and made some calls, and I was contacted today by an animal rescue organization who said they will help me in caring for her while her permanent home is found. Both my neighbors will help me get started with food, bowls, etc., and will help me walk her and play with her. So tonight we will let her into my yard, and I feel like I am embarking (no pun intended) on a totally new adventure. I’ve already noticed that since she has been in my drive, the feral cat with fleas has stayed out of my yard, where it normally lounges.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Vicki B,
Bless your heart for trying to help this homeless dog. Whether you keep her or are instrumental in her finding a home you have done a good deed. Hope it works out well for you and Baby. hugs

Dear Vicki B.Good luck to you and your new doggy friend.Look on it as a great adventure. You are only doing what any kind person would do. That is to show compassion and love to one in need whether 2 or 4 legged.God bless you.Hugs Sheena.

Dear Sheena,
Very well said! Bless you! Love and Hugs
Good Luck to you, Vicki, and to your sweet “pit-ty”(pit bull) friend. This may also help you overcome some of your longtime fears of canines. To quote “Casablanca” (the movie): “This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship!”
All the Best to you and your charge. Hugs and Love
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Thanks, Sheena. A couple of neighbors lured her into my yard with hot dogs, the other neighbors had given her a bath, and also gave me a big bag of dog food, and the blanket that they put out for her in my drive. She was nervous in my patio, but we stroked her and stayed with her while she relaxed for about an hour, and she is now out exploring all the flora in my big yard. While I’m at work tomorrow, my brother will check on her. For now, I’m calling her “Baby”.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Vicki B.,
Good name choice, I think! Sure hope Baby can find happiness and love.
Take care! Hugs
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Vicki B:
If you can’t keep her, I hope “Baby” finds a home with someone as caring as you. Love and Hugs, JB
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Thanks, Judy & Marshall. I am hoping to find her a forever home, because I think she would be happier, too, in the long run, and get more from someone who really likes to “be with” dogs. “Baby” seems so social, likes other dogs, and also needs serious exercise — but with my bad knee, I can’t just walk her as much as I see my neighbors taking long walks with their dogs each day. I don’t want her just cooped up in the yard, even if it is big.
I heard some noise outside, and just found she figured out how to get herself between the bars to get into and out of the locked patio gate — they are narrow, and we didn’t think she would be able to, but she can. I don’t care, as long as she doesn’t hurt herself. Someone told me it will take her a few days to feel comfortable in her new location, even if it’s safer.
Celeste_in_TX
If you’ve given her a name she is most likely going to be your new doggie friend, or so I’ve heard it said before. Bravo to you for allowing your caring heart and compassion to overcome your life time of fears and trying to take care of her. Wishing you both the best!!

At last Hovis triumphs. He has pleased his Mum and been rewarded. The dream of eventing however goes on.
Good weekend to all, and a safe return to all horses who are racing. Big race weekend at Woodbine. They are however missing the popular Dan, who is taking a pass this year on Toronto for the Shadwell. Uncle Johnny is riding Silver Freak instead. Good luck, Uncle Johnny.

JudyB. You wanted to see Tiznow winning in 2001. He booted the best that year, not only Galileo, but the Arc winner also. Some think that this result for Galileo was a factor in Frankel never venturing out of England to risk suffering the same fate as his sire. Tiznow is America’s horse, a true champion and still the only horse to win two Classics. He looks like Z too, tiny. Check out his blaze at the end of the race.

This got some air time recently as part of Tom Durkin’s retirement replays – several people rated it has his greatest call. I had no idea until recently what year this was or how soon after the 9/11 tragedy. Tiznow was amazing, and it was also great to get a glimpse of Galileo and Macho Uno. Thanks Max.
Max
Galileo is a very good looking horse. Frankel gets some of his looks from him, but the real elegance of Frankel appears to come from his mother and his grandfather, Danehill. Danehill was an exquisite looking horse. I also think that Frankel resembles Nijinsky.
Tiznow holds the distinction of being a direct male descendent of Man o’ War. Unlike most horses, Tiz traces his heritage to the Darley Arabian. Tiz’s full sisters, Tisamazing and Tizso, are the mothers of Oxbow and Paynter, whose father is Awesome Again. A great family.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Thank you so much for posting this video for me. What a great race Tiz ran. Could be why Frankel never raced out of the UK. It is quite a lot of stress on them I think, the traveling. Thank you for all the info on Tiz’s family. Wow, direct male descendant of Man O’ War! Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Could have been different for Frankel if he had raced on turf. O’Brien raced Galileo for the first time on dirt in the 2001 Classic. Critics say that that was the mistake. It’s difficult for a horse who is used to English turf courses with wider turns to be confronted with a dirt track like Belmont with tighter turns. Galileo had an impeccable race record otherwise. Think that Cecil did the right thing to be conservative with Frankel. Travelling aboard is always problematic.

September 12 Cherokee Devotional
Some things never fade or wither in the late summer sun. Totally adapted to heat and dry weather, the sunflowers grow tall and heavy with bright yellow blooms. They color the roadsides and fencerows with the first look of autumn. Auail abound in the meadows, nervously breaking cover at the slightest sound. But cooler, damper weather will make them covey up and hold tight when a quiet walker eases by pretending they are well hidden-gv s ga lv in Cherokee. As evening settles in, a spider is silhouetted against the sun’s last glow-back and forth, a little shuttle weaving gossamer threads into an intricate design to catch a flying insect. It is a part of the serenity that pervades the silent hour before dark and sings a song. Peace be with you.

@Vicki B.—ummmm. I think you have been chosen. Dogs do that, you know., I walk Charlie, but Jug is so arthritic that Daisy doesn’t get walked much. She gets plenty of exercise, though, pestering Charlie, even in our small yard.

Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Barbara, thanks, you might be right. I am already a bit attached, myself, but on the other hand, my neighbors who have dogs are so much better in handling her, she goes right to them eagerly, whereas with me, she does not gravitate to me at all, yet. So we will see if that changes.

A very sad story from Manchester last night.A 15 year old has been arrested on suspicion of arson after part of the Manchester Dogs home burned down 53 dogs are assumed to have lost their lives. Many emerged as heroes risking their lives to save the animals and the response has been overwhelming well over £600,000 has been raised for the charity and peeps are donating trolley loads of food, bowls and blankets.Firemen say they will never forget the screams of the dogs.I cannot say here what I would like to do to that moron. All doggies go to heaven.RIP.Sheena.
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
That is just haunting. RIP all those precious souls. Kathy.

Sheena,
How horrible!! I can’t even imagine, nor do i want to, what it would be like to hear those dogs screaming. What goes thru the mind of someone who could do such a thing. God Bless those who risked their lives to save some and those who have donated. i work with my Humane Society raising funds so I can appreciate what you are going thru. hugs to you and all the survivors.

Dear Kathy.I am so upset about the fire at the Manchester dog’s home how can someone be so cruel. An incident such as this always seems to bring out the best in the majority though.
I was glad to hear Angel Rose has gone home the power of prayer!I loved your response today’s zoeism.I was sad for Mango yesterday she’s lost a close friend Hermes a puppy mill survivor who died suddenly, momma and Mango were so upset they didn’t post anything yesterday.Poor Marty is in jail and hasn’t even been allowed a phonecall yet!His evil twin Morty has got him into trouble again!Marty must be freed!!
A belated Happy Birthday to Holly hope she’s enjoying her special week can quite imagine momma spoiling her!!Did you see that hilarious video of the great danes on Joey’s FB sibling rivalry at it’s best!!Dolly has managed to post this week,it’s still very hot there but there is an uneasy calm,am glad I’m in rural Wales! The Queen’s horse is about to run in the Doncaster cup now, hope it puts a smile on Her Majesty’s face.have a great day.Hugs to you,Kisses to Holly, Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.

Dear Sheena,
Talk about extremes…we see the worst and the best examples of people in this story. Great news about Angel Rose. Just LOVE her name! It’s true, we can take the criticism a lot better if we are told at the same time what we did well. Condolences to Mango and Mommy on the loss of their friend Hermes. Very sad. Poor Marty. Hope he gets his “get out of jail” card soon! That dratted evil twin Morty! Amen…Free Marty along with the Moose! Holly thanks you for your birthday wishes. Of course I am spoiling her, but that’s nothing new! We call her “the Princess.” She really does think she’s Royalty, Sheena. She rules the roost! That video of the Great Danes was hilarious, indeed. It’s amazing how much the one doing the complaining sounds like a lion! lol Always glad to hear from Dolly. So hot there not to mention dangerous in the extreme. Best of luck to Her Majesty’s horse! TGIF and have a wonderful weekend! Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar.

Hi everyone!
I’m getting ready to go overseas, to London England for a week with my son, who’s never been before, so I’ve been tardy getting back here…..sigh.
But I did start working on a new piece for THE VAULT awhile back — and finally finished it up this morning. It’s something “new” from yours truly but I’m hoping that you’ll enjoy it!

Love & hugs to all and peppermint kisses to my beautiful Big Girl and her family!

Have a great trip Abigail. So wish that I could visit there again – haven’t seen it since 1969 when my dear aunt was still alive. Looking forward to reading your latest work.
Abigail_1849
Sandy: I haven’t been back for over 40 years — I lived & worked there in the early 1970’s and was there again in 1974 on my honeymoon. So I just know I’ll find the changes rather shocking. But the good news is that my son has never been before, so I’ll get to introduce him to some of the city’s landmarks and that will be a lot of fun.
Maryp NY
Dear Abigail, I really love knowing about Greyhound and Rosalind and their accomplishments as well as their owner & trainer. When I was very young a harness race track opened in our area and I went with my parents. I loved it but didn’t know anything except I loved seeing the horses.
I also noted your reference to a quote from the book “The Goldfinch”. My daughter recommended that to me several months ago and I have it sitting third on the shelf to read.
I always enjoy every piece you write and I thank you.
Maryp
Abigail_1849
Maryp: My grandfather loved thoroughbreds & standardbreds and owned one of the first standardbreds in the province of Quebec, where I live. One of my earliest memories is of my grandfather in a sulky driving over to the fair grounds to work out one of the horses. So the trotters & pacers have always been special in my life too. Greyhound brought me to Rosalind …. I had read “Born To Trot” as a girl but somehow didn’t remember that the story was about a real filly. But as I researched Rosalind’s story I absolutely fell in love with her!
I just finished reading “The Goldfinch” and I liked it very much, although there were moments where I thought the text needed a severe edit — especially near the end. I’ll be interested to hear what you think of it. Please write me @ THE VAULT (just click on my name and you end up on-site) and let me know! Hugs

Dear Max.I read about noble Mission on RP earlier I am delighted for him.The other horse Spiritjim was on clenbuterol,it’s used in humans for asthma.Even Frankel didn’t win group 1’s outside the UK1Now NM has got 2 victories under his belt.I was so pleased for Estimate a very gutsy performance.I could imagine Her Majesty watching the telly in Balmoral. No luck for Joyeuse yesterday though.
Big weekend for Aidan with Australia and Tapestry is running as well.I have thought he would have run Leading Light in our St Leger.I hope things go well for Treve Frankie was talking about the phone call today,he was very upset.Hovis merchandise our boy is turning out to be an internashunal bizness man like Marty,(that’s Marty’s spelling)I hope Hovis isn’t taking advantage while Marty is in jail! He’s had a much happier week though and no question of his parentage! How’s the decking coming along?Free the Moose. You look after those ospreys!PU Beast.Sheena.

Sheena. I feel the same. Thrilled to see Noble get that win. The end of that race always looked very strange to me. Glad that he’s got another grade 1. Also good for Lady Cecil.
Joyeuse has had some bad luck. She’s only 3 so that she’s got time.
Have you ever heard about Kind’s last foal by Galileo? Did something happen?
Estimate. I love her, tough as nails and a real trier. Read that she’s smart and a real character too. You can tell that by the way that she looks at the Queen. The Queen will do the right thing for her about the Melbourne Cup.
Why is the rat in jail?
Deck not done. Looking at October.

Marty is in jail because he was framed by his evil twin, “Morty.” He stands accused of stealing yogies (rat snacks).

Kathy. Thanks for this. I will have to watch out for the evil Morty. Hopefully Marty has a lawyer who can spring him soon.
Free the Moose. Let go of that Moose and Marty. Beast, Snake and Danny, lights out in your stalls. You need sleep. Dream of the winner’s circle. Beast, you can bet that Tony’s pony is dreaming of another trip to the circle. Get well.
