Dear Sheena:
Empty nest syndrome has spread Downunder: lovely scenery, but so empty without our little family. Just wish they could send up update on the travels. Did a search on the Australian osprey – no doubt because of the size of the place, they don’t migrate, just move about in search of fish, but the colour of the birds is very similar to yours. Dear Judy B.,
I succeeded finally in posting the link for the Lights on Broadway article in Offtrack Thoroughbreds. It is on the previous page (4). I just scanned down the comments at the end of the article to find someone had posted a lovely poem, “Don’t cry for the horses”. Simply beautiful — brought tears to my eyes. I will never look at the sky in quite the same way!
Love and hugs, and Goodnight
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Marshall:
Thank you so much for posting the article on Lights On Broadway. What a gorgeous horse he was. What a story; a miracle really that Mr. Sanders would speak to the driver transporting LOB to a horrible death and then buy him, saving his life. Unbelievable. Thank God he lived a happy life and was loved until the end. Love and Hugs, JB
KathyR
Dear Marshall:
Forced myself to read the story of the beautiful Lights on Broadway – find it just so hideous the way we breed and then discard these horses. I’ll give my little girl a hug from you tomorrow for caring. Hugs KathyR.
PS: Loved the poem too.

Dear Marshall, Kathy R and Z Family:
Just had to post the poem here and share it with all of you. Need lots of tissues. St. Francis protect Street Cry and all of them. Love and Hugs, JB
Don’t cry for the horses that life has set free.
A million white horses forever to be.
Don’t cry for the horses now in Spirit’s hand.
As they dance and they prance in a heavenly band.
They were ours as a gift, but never to keep.
As they close their eyes forever to sleep.
Their spirits unbound. On silver wings they fly.
A million white horses against the blue sky.
Look up into heaven, you’ll see them above.
The horses we lost, the horses we loved.
Manes and tails flowing they gallop through time.
They were never yours – they were never mine.
Don’t cry for the horses. They’ll be back someday.
When our time is gone, they will show us the way.
Do you hear that soft nicker? Close to your ear?
Don’t cry for the horses. Love the ones that are here.
~Brenda Riley-Seymore~

Dear Kathy R:
It’s just heartbreaking that our beloved horses are still being sold to kill buyers and slaughtered. Lights On Broadway was one of the very lucky ones that was rescued just in time. So many are not. Love and Hugs, JB
KathyR
Dear Judy:
The problem I find Downunder is the denial: it was like pulling teeth to find out where my little girl had gone, for example. And when I prowl the web to find out what’s happened to favourites – nothing! I’m told that it’s rare for horses to go to doggers, but if they’re not being sold they’re often abandoned in paddocks never to be seen. So depressing, and no doubt why we celebrate the victories against the system. Love and hugs, KathyR.
PS: Hope Frank is behaving – don’t think he’ll boom (it’s a great rumble they make) think that’s usually only the female. Give him a “g’day” from me!
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
Unfortunately, the horses just disappear and there’s no way of tracing them. One of the horses that Angela rescued last year was in a kill pen at an auction in PA. She had been purchased by a kill buyer and was on her way to slaughter. A woman saw her and made the kill buyer an offer to purchase her and he agreed. The woman then gave her to a rescue nearby to be adopted. Angela saw her on the rescue’s website, adopted her and went to PA to pick her up. She was skin and bones, listless and had a cut on one of her legs. Turns out her race name is Historical and although she didn’t do well as a racer, she was used as a broodmare and has a daughter that is still (as far as we know) actively racing. Her name is Historical Fact. I am worried about her as well. Here are before and after photos. Must warn you, the before photo is tough to see. Angela calls her Willow. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Judy B.,
Thanks for the photos of Historical. Wow, how great she looks now! I am so happy that she had two angels looking after her — the lady that bought her from the kill buyer and put her in the rescue, and your Angela (perfect name) who has given her a loving safe house with happiness. Hope someone can find and keep watch over Historical Fact as well.
All the Best with Love and Hugs on top!
Marshall (NC Broad)
Oops! I forgot that her present name is Willow, and it sure does fit, Willow is lovely!

Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Marshall:
I’m worried about Historical Fact, but she is still in the higher level Claiming Races ($16,000.00) but at a small track where they can disappear easily. She has a wonderful race record; 25 starts, 13 wins and 5 seconds. She has won her last three races; most recently on 9/3/14. She is a Gray like her Mama. Have to keep an eye on her. Love and Hugs, JB

Living The Life ‘Masters’ Stakes Debut
By Myra Lewyn The Blood-Horse September 8, 2014
All-weather sprint specialist Living The Life, a recent arrival from overseas, added a third straight win to her record Sept. 8 in taking the $400,000 Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes (gr. II) at Presque Isle Downs (VIDEO).
The Irish-bred daughter of Footstepsinthesand won her stakes debut by a half-length under Mike Smith after taking charge from stubborn pacesetter Significant Bling in midstretch. She tenaciously dug in and held back runner-up Disco Barbie, who came between rivals to challenge and swiftly closed ground but could not overtake the winner.

Bit of Street Cry news: Just found this little bit mixed up with other stuff in an article by Rod Nicholson of the Herald Sun (8 Sept 2014). It won’t paste, so will retype it:
“A decision on the stud future of leading sire Street Cry will be made the end of the month. The 16yr old Darley stallion has been sidelined with a mystery ailment that is preventing him from standing for long periods. Street Cry is lame in his off-side foreleg although no skeletal problems have been discovered. Owners with mares booked to Street Cry have been given the option of waiting until a decision is made or switching to another stallion.”
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks for the update KathyR. As someone who know nothing about horse ailments, I am perplexed that they can’t figure this out and get on with a treatment, but there are mystery ailments in every species I guess.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
I read that too. Hoping and praying the vets can figure out what it is and successfully treat Street Cry so he can recover completely. Love and Hugs, JB

September 9 Cherokee Devotional
When we do something that falls below our best behavior, we give power to our worst enemy. And each time we overcome irritation and self-pity, we draw near our best friend. Our worst enemy, the Cherokee calls adagagi, and our best friend, unalii, are one. They live in us and everywhere we go, they go. They speak to us, act through us, and vie for our attention. We are our own best friend and our own worst enemy. One is stronger than the other at times. But it is our decision which will rule and which one we will nurture, because we are the life and the strength of each one. Our lives, our health, and prosperity are all evidence of what we let rule us.
I am here by the will of the Great Spirit, and by his will I am chief.

Dear Kathy.I had to have a peep on the dyfi live-streaming it’s such a beautiful day there but ever so lonely!I saw your messages on Joey and Zoe.I expect you know Joey’s ashes are getting collected this week by Theba. He had to have a necropsy and his doctors will be on the programme on September 22nd to reveal the results.I hope they will scatter the ashes in all his favourite places in the garden.I miss him so much,I have lost a few furbabies since I got my PC but his passing has affected me the most.
Marty got me all mixed up by not cancelling Monday and he didn’t get an ice-cream!Mango’s mom won a prize I think Mango’s pic will be in Norbert’s next book and her Purdy dresses were found!!Did you see the paralysed dog they were trying to help poor little thing isn’t in a good place.Ollie J is back on FB and poor Zoe has had an awful lot of rain! Her little friend’s sisfur isn’t very well either.Fubu seems to be doing quite well lately eating his dry food and kitty gravy.Hope you have a great day.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.

Dear Sheena,
Yes, it must seem really strange at the Dyfi with everyone gone. Feeling sorry for the people there! I sure hope they scatter Joey’s ashes in the garden. I can’t imagine a more perfect place. I know what you mean about the affect of losing Joey. I miss him terribly, too. He was just so charismatic. No ice cream for Marty…I didn’t think Marty was deprived of ANYTHING. Poor little rat. Speaking of ice cream, I sure love seeing little Zoe eat her ice cream. You can tell she really loves it but still eats very daintily. Mango is beautiful. She would grace any book. So glad her dresses were found. Didn’t see the paralyzed dog. Will look for him/her. Yes, I was delighted to see that Ollie is back. Wish we would hear something from Valentino and Violet. I miss them! Yes, I read about Zoe’s friend’s sisfur. Poor little girl. It’s so hard when our furbabies are ailing. I’m always amazed at the way Fubu keeps rebounding. Read that Lily’s capes will be donated so that some other dogs fighting cancer can be brave. Very touching! Have a wonderful day. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy.

Dear Max.Looks like a great weekend in Ireland they hold the races in the evening now,Noble Mission and Al Kazeem may take on Australia. I think Tapestry is running over the weekend too.Joyeuse is at Doncaster on Thursday promises dry weather all week.It certainly hasn’t been Frankie’s week with Al Naamah well beaten today. She cost £5 million guineas as a yearling! These sheikhs have more money than sense.
PMQ’s have been cancelled tomorrow Dave,Nick and Ed are going to Scotland. It’s neck-and-neck in the voting now.Her Majesty is very concerned and,if truth be known,so am I.Hope Moosie is getting on well with his osprey guests!Free the Moose!PU Beast and all sick horses.Sheena.
Max
Sheena. That’s a lot of news. Sounds like very interesting times for races are on the horizon. Is Noble dropping back in length? Australia doesn’t run at a mile and a half? Would like to see Joyeuse get a win.
Lilibet need not worry. The dual crowns predate the union of 1707. She can still be Queen of Scotland. The yes side should broadcast Braveheart non stop. However sending Dave and company to talk to my peeps might have the same effect. Scotland must be free!
Moose, you too need freedom from the beak. Beast, Snake and Dan, you already live in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

JudyB. Really enjoyed watching this colt. A true beauty. Mom is by AP. Notice how the auction handler gave him a soft reassuring pat on his neck? That guy knows how to deal with horses. This kind of job is a big responsibility because these yearlings are babies and you never know how they will react to stressful situations. Standing there for the first time in a sale ring must be tough for them.
Free the Moose. Piece of cake for you, Moosie. Standing still is your speciality. Goodnight Beast, Snakie and The Champ.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Our Ann NC brought up exactly that point in a comment she posted above after watching R.Hill, the handler with the Bernardini filly Hip 105, in a video I posted above. Great responsibility, as you can see the obvious stress some of these babies are feeling. They are babies and it’s great when the handler makes the experience for them as less frightening as possible. Reassuring pat on the neck; just the ticket. Love and Hugs, JB
Ann NC
He sure knows how to “read horses”. Some folks are just born with it! Lucky folks!

Dear Ann:
So true. I like the way he takes control, but doesn’t jerk on the lead rope. He’s aware that it’s all new and scary for them. Remember Zenyatta and how she was whinnying in the sales ring. All and all they do very well for babies, especially with Mr. Hill’s careful handling. Love and Hugs, JB

Visited Charlie, Hudson and Frankie today. I groomed Charlie and gave him his muffins and carrots and I visited with Hudson and gave her treats too.
Here are a couple of photos of Frankie. One with Angela and Alex feeding him fruit. The other photo shows Magnum in the front of the photo and Frankie toward the back. He is sharing a pen with the Minis and everyone seems perfectly fine with that. He seems to be settling in nicely. Angela said she has tried to catch him, but he takes off at high speed. JudyB. Isn’t that just great? If Frankie can run that fast, his last name might be Bolt.

Dear Max:
Love it; name suits. He can really move. Sometimes he just takes off and “bolts” from one end of the pen to the other. Love and Hugs, JB
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
Frankie sometimes makes a “boom” or “roaring” sound. Do you know why Emus do that? Angela was asking me and I found some articles that say they usually make that noise during mating season. The articles stated that it’s the females that make a “booming” sound and the males make a grunting noise. But, I have heard Frank and it definitely sounds like a boom. Angela thought the same thing. Could our Frankie be a Francine? Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Oh my! Life is getting even more complex at that farm. It’s like the Young and the Restless. What is the next episode going to bring? Ear glued for more bulletins.

KathyR
Dear Judy:
Frank is only a little bloke: maybe the ones around Canberra are bigger due to stealing sausages! The blokes also look after the eggs – don’t know if you’ve seen emu eggs, but they’re almost purple. They can certainly run – another silly country/western song that was very popular down here was one that talked about an emu “who could run the pants off a kangaroo”. Hugs KathyR
Max
JudyB. Isn’t there a horse called The Purple Egg? Think he’s a favorite of a lot of Z peeps.
Free the Moose! You’re a red egg like The King of the Chestnuts. Snake and Beast, you’re bay eggs. Make certain those stall lights are out.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
Yes, I have seen photos of Emu eggs; beautiful color and I read that the males incubate the eggs. I don’t know how old Frank is and whether he is through growing. I have to ask Angela. If he stretches his head to full height, he is almost as tall as Angela and she is about 5′ 1″. Too cute, “run the pants off a Kangaroo”! Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Max:
Yes, indeed. There is a horse called Purple Egg. Love your Red Eggs, Bay Eggs and don’t forget Gray Eggs. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Judy:
You’re right – the “before” shot of Willow is a shocker – but just loved the second one! Glad Charlie enjoyed his muffins: went to visit my little girl today – the paddock was under water in places because we had quite a downpour last night. She was sitting down, but got up and came to me, which was just so wonderful. Gave her the Judy muffin, but was interrupted by Romeo and Red who got very smart again. No doubt my girl is shy and well behaved, but feel so sad when I can’t get close because of these two dopey blokes. The Elegant Emily told me that she’s about to pull Red out of the paddock and get him into some work, so that will be good. Told my little girl I’ll be back tomorrow, and Friday is definitely grooming day, as her cotton rug needs a wash. Just love my visits with her! Hugs KathyR
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
Yes, Willow is a happy horse now. The woman riding her in the photo is Lisa and since she has no horse of her own, she pays Angela a leasing fee to ride and groom Willow. She is great with Willow and Willow loves her.
It’s good that Red will be occupied elsewhere (hopefully when you go back and visit T on Friday). With only Romeo there, maybe you can bribe him with a carrot or muffin while you put a halter on T and lead her out of the paddock for her grooming. How great is it that she comes right over to meet you. You’re building a wonderful bond with Tiny Thurzel. Hopefully, the paddock will have dried up some. Love and Hugs, JB

He is a very handsome boy. Looks to be a lot bigger than Oxbow who is on the small side.
Isn’t Mandy Pope the one who bought the full sister to Afleet Alex from Stonestreet last fall? Haven’t heard anymore about her, but she was a looker.
Max
shirlee. Ox is 16 hands which is a good height for a horse, although far from Beast proportions. Like his coat, Ox’s size can be deceiving. He and Paynter are such good boys. As JudyB will agree, their uncle Tiznow is however quite a tiny horse.
Free the Moose. Beak, let go of our Moosie. Beast, Snake and Dan, have a good night.

Dear Max and Shirlee:
Absolutely agree; a tiny horse. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Shirlee:
You’re right and she named her Fleet Alexsis. She was born March 20, 2012. No works listed yet on her Equibase Page. Love and Hugs, JB

Oops: Sorry Shirlee. That should be “Afleet Alexsis”. Love and Hugs,JB

JudyB. Just realized that this colt is a gray. Ox on the other hand cannot be a gray because both parents are bays. This colt has Unbridled’s Song as his sire, so that he will gray out. He also looks to be full of mischief like the other guys in his family.
Free the mischevious Moose. Beast, hope that you are relaxing that ankle. Snake and Dan, eat up and get some rest.

Dear Max:
Yes, the auctioneer announces him as a Gray Roan. Funny, but his coat looks the color of Oxbows doesn’t it? He will probably gray out more as he gets older. Love and Hugs, JB
Marshall (NC Broad)
Yes, Judy, he is very handsome. Best wishes to Hip 345 and Mandy Pope!
Look forward to following his career.
Hugs and Goodnight

Dear Shirlee and Z Fans:
Shirlee, here’s an article from Blood Horse Blogger, Frank Angst. He states that Lea had a bullet work at Saratoga on August 31st, but does not mention a recurrence of fever, just that he was scratched from the Bernard Baruch as an MTO, which we knew. The article is dated 9/9/14, so this is recent and encouraging. Love and Hugs, JB

Anxiously awaiting his return. Power Up Lea.

Dear Ann:
Yes, would be great to see him well and racing again. Love and Hugs, JB

Judy, Thanks for the article.
The Bloodhorse said that Lea had been taken out of the Ack Ack last Saturday at Churchill because he had a fever. Seems like he is doing well now. He is the last of my favs from last year who is still racing. Guess this will be his last year whether he goes to the track again or not since he is 5 and a horse. Just hope when retirement comes he goes back home to Claiborne.

Dear Shirlee:
Me too. Hope he is better. Love and Hugs, JB
