Dear Z Family:
Frank arrived safely at the farm this morning. Angela was at a barrel racing competition But she left instructions that Frank be put in a pen by himself until he gets acclimated to his new home. He is a very beautiful bird; beautiful face and eyes.
I visited with Deb, Amanda and Hudson and they showed me some wonderful photos they took at the show. Hudson, unfortunately bumped her head while traveling in the van to the show and had an uncomfortable lump on her head. The bridle was making it more painful so Amanda’s friend, Heather, who was also competing in the show, rigged up a bridal that took pressure off Hudson’s painful lump and she was fine. She was very well behaved and finished sixth out of 23 in a Baby Green Flat event. Amanda said H enjoyed her Stud Muffin treats throughout all the days of the show. Didn’t get to visit with Charlie today, but will see him next week. Need to make another batch of muffins. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Just how tiny is Frank?
Free the Moose! Beast, Snake and Wise Dan, hope that you guys have had a good day.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
I would guess Frank is a tiny 5 feet when he holds his head up tall. He is a beauty. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Yes, that is tiny. I hope that Frank has Z’s temperament. A Big D bird of that size could cause problems.
Free the Moose! Beast, Snake and the Champ, time for some shut eye.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Me too. Hope Frank doesn’t channel Big D. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. These birds have the reputation of being docile and pleasant. Let’s hope that it is true and that the horses and Frank get along fine. If Frank has been bullied, he’s probably looking for the quiet life. From the little that I know, it seems as if Angela is doing everything correctly. Frank just needs time to adjust to his new coordinates. Looking forward to hearing about his intro to Charlie.
Free the Moose! Moose already has a barn full of osprey. Beast, Snake and Dan, wonder how you guys would get along with emus?
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Yes, hoping Frank has a sweet temperament and you’re right, I think Angela is doing everything she can to make Frank comfortable in his new surroundings. We shall see how it goes when he meets the horses. Charlie was puzzled by the Mini’s; heaven knows what he will think of an Emu.
I can visualize Moose and all the Osprey having discussions about why Moosie refuses to race and all about the skill of fishing. Don’t know what Dan, Beast or Snake would think of Frankie. Love and Hugs, JB
Sally B. (Auntie cherishes Z and her young)
Dear Judy B; What a delightful day on the farm you had. Frank is almost as tall as I am; just shy 3 1/2 inches. Happy to know Hudson did very well and that the bump was not serious. Yum yum, he loves those stud muffins!!
love n hugs, Sally B
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Sally:
Yes, need to make another batch of muffins. Can’t show up at the farm without them. Love and Hugs, JB
Ann NC
Oh boy, JB, a new adventure. Glad Frank is safely tucked away on the farm. It will be fun to hear about his antics.
Glad Hudson is getting better. I do not know if they still sell them, but they did have horsey helments just for travel. Padded for extra protection against the bumps.
Poor baby. Kudos to Heather!
Congrats to Team Hudson, good job, fantastic!
Love to all.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Ann:
Yes, H was better today. Funny, I asked Deb about a helmet this morning and she said Angela has given her one that she had still in the package; never used. So Hudson will definitely be wearing it next time. Yes, Heather is to be admired. Quite knowledgeable about all things horses. She’s the same friend of Amanda’s who helped load Hudson for the trip home. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Judy
So hope the bump on Hudson’s head will be ok. I’ll keep her in my prayers.

Dear Debbie. The Dyfi is so quiet tonight.I always shed a tear when Monty leaves because,of course, the season is over.Despite the rather shaky start everything turned out well in the end with 2 beautiful youngsters flying off to a new life in Africa. It seems a long time until spring but it will quickly pass and we will be waiting Monty back and hopefully an earlier return by Glesni.Monty has been an exceptional partner and father,i well remember him incubating the eggs one night from about 10.30pm until dawn. One doesn’t have to wonder why Blue 24 was so desperate to get him as a partner.I hope you have a lovely week away.I’ll say sweet dreams now and God bless.Hugs Sheena.

Max, What a great story of Metro, Big D’s son. Now he has proven himself as an actor, how cool is this!
hugs, Sally B
Max
Sally B. I love this story and this horse. Very proud of him. I’m sure that Big D is too.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Oh, this is too cute. What a story. Congrats to Metro on his film debut. Maybe we should start calling him “Brad Pitt”. Wonder what Big D thinks! Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Oasis Dreams, Morpheus’ daddy, already has that nickname based on his looks. Metro is more like Clarke Gable or Cary Grant. Could be John Wayne? Old Hollywood. Think that Big D would be real proud of his tiny son. Horses can do anything. You just have to tap their talents.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
I know. I remember you posting that “Brad Pitt” is Oasis Dream’s nickname. Well, Metro would do well with any of those names that you mentioned. Yes, I think Big D would be proud too. He would probably go with “John Wayne”. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Max,

Dear Sheena:
I will try to take some photos of Frank next week.
Poor Hudson she was sore and also she had hives the first day of the show around the saddle blanket area and Deb thought it might be the shampoo the blanket was washed in. They used a different saddle blanket and she was fine. Never a dull moment. Love and Hugs, JB, LM, PC, HT, Cap, Herc and all the Sweeties

Dear Z Family
I just got home from the barn ,much more fun than packing. Ash whinneyed and we went for a walk and grass,it is so peaceful on a Sunday. As he grazed I leaned my back against his side, head just above his belly, and relaxed. Also like to massage his spine a little.Such a nice sound with him grazing, like a dog drinking water.Happy. He ambled along, a long stretch of grass and it was nice for him as he doesn’t have a pasture(would love him to). Walked home and put him in the paddock out front while I cleaned his stall and out area.He has a wonderful barn manager but it is nice to help a little. I peeked and saw him have a good roll and then do his little gallop. He moved around happily and then stood by the gate when he knew his dinner hay was in his stall.I walked towards him and asked “Do you want to come in Mr.Ash ?”and he whinneyed a “Yes”. Brushed him off as he ate his hay. I was going to share the few stud muffins I had left but he relished them so I didn’t have the heart – he glanced in the container with longing eyes..I shared some carrots and everyone was happy with dinner when I left.
Dear Judy, Hudson did very well at the show Congratulations Hudson. I’m,glad she had a bridle that worked for her and hope her bump is better soon. The pictures will be wonderful!
Goodnight, sweet dreams everyone. Love and hugs,Debbie

I saw this headline about Lights on Broadway when reading Max’s post about Metro. I read it — seems that Lights was on his way to the sl****terhouse when circumstances offered safety. It seems that Lights developed a severe case of colic over the Labor Day weekend and rapidly went downhill. He was euthanized at age 17.
Lights on Broadway was 2001 Texas Racehorse of the Year. I am so glad that he was rescued and had the chance to be loved and well-cared for. RIP Lights on Broadway, you were quite a handsome chestnut. Hugs and Love
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Marshall:
Love that name; Lights On Broadway. Glad he was rescued and hopefully lived a happy life until the dreaded colic. Rest In Peace. Here’s a photo of the beautiful Chestnut. Love and Hugs, JB

Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Judy B.,
Thanks for posting the photo of Lights on Broadway! He looks beautiful here. I would have posted the article, but am inept at such things. There was a photo with the article. I think he had resided in his loving home since 2004 so he had several years of TLC. I am so happy that The Fates smiled on him. His owners ( the Keens) did love him. Donna and Dallas Keen were inspired by Lights to found Remember Me Rescue and he was their poster horse.
He had beautiful chestnut coloring with flaxen mane and tail. They planned to bury him under a large pecan tree next to Dallas Keen’s beloved pony horse, Blue. Very touching description.
I will try this: offtrackthoroughbreds.com/2014/09/03/lights-on-broadway-dies-of-colic-in-texas/

Dear Judy:
Poor Hudson having to compete with itchy skin and a sore head! Hope she’s recovering well.
Delighted that Frank has arrived – emus are usually up to the 6 foot mark in height. They can be grumpy, and kick – those legs are very powerful and can rip metal fencing if they’re cranky (as in kicking down outhouses) or frightened. We Aussies love them because they’re such crazy characters. They’re also on the coat of arms, along with the kangaroo, chosen because both animals cannot go backwards. Just keep him away from the barbecue! Hugs KathyR

Dear Kathy R:
Thank you for your kind concern for Hudson. She’s doing much better. How was your Tiny T today?
Hope all goes well with Frankie. He really is a beautiful bird. Love and Hugs, JB
KathyR
Dear Judy:
Went out with the best of intentions (you know the feeling!). My girl was her usual quiet self, but Leo, Red and Romeo (the other gelding) must have been on the pink drinks and too much sugar. They were shockers, especially Leo – kicking, biting, swirling about, all of which unsettled my girl and made it impossible – unless I was willing to be kicked – to put on her headstall etc. So withdrew again – made sure she had her muffins (will have to bake some more!) which she enjoyed. The Elegant Emily said I should just whack Leo, but I don’t want to upset my girl. Anyway, I went out again this morning (Monday) and the blokes were being blokey so stayed outside the fence, and called her – and she came! So rewarded her with my last lot of Judy treats, avoiding the stupid behaviour – Leo even tried to bite her on the rump at one stage – this time he got me mad and was close enough for me to administer a good whack, which surprised him, but to my delight my little girl was not at all upset, and even seemed pleased that her Mum was there to sort out the bullies. Will just have to get a bit of assistance when I go to do the grooming on Friday, but until then will just play it by ear, and keep letting her know she’s the centre of my universe, not the blokes! She’s just so sweet! Love and hugs, KathyR
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
You are doing everything just right. These paddock mates can be quite rude and nasty at times, but it seems Thurzel has figured out you are her Mum and protector. She IS a sweetheart. Looks like we’ll both be baking another batch of muffins soon. Hope Leo takes the hint and minds his manners. Love and Hugs, JB
KathyR
Dear Judy:
Just a thought: don’t know what the piece of apparatus is called, but a few of our racehorses rear in the barrier, and have knocked their heads, so they wear “hat” – looks like a small roll, and seems to be attached to the headstall. Maybe that might help Hudson until she gets over her concerns in the float (or van as you folk say). Hugs KathyR
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
Angela had what Ann NC suggested Deb use for Hudson. It’s a “helmet” that protects the top of the horses head if they rear up in the float/van. Deb will have Hudson wear it next time she travels. Thank you for the info. Love and Hugs, JB
KathyR
Dear Judy:
Sounds a lot like a variation of what is used down here for horses rearing in the stalls. Just as long as it helps. Love and hugs KathyR

Dear Judy:

That would work perfectly. Have to show the photo to Deb. I have not seen the “helmet” that Angela gave Deb for Hudson. Will check it out and let you know if it is similar to what Tremec is wearing. Thank you. Love and Hugs, JB

September 8 Cherokee Devotional
A change of season comes softly. Morning mists hang like gauze curtains through the valleys, and pockets of cooler air waft like thistledown on late summer breezes. The days are still warm with crickets trilling until rainshowers begin to cool the land. Even before there is credible evidence that fall is coming, one senses it in the air. The green willows bend gracefully in the changing wind and slowly change their color to sunshine. It is time to enjoy what the Cherokee refers to as ga ne tli yv s di, the change-over, the freeing of the old season, the welcome to the new. It is the nut-gathering time-acorns, pecans, walnuts in abundance. The sweetness of the earth speaks to the feet and renews the spirit.
When I make peace, it is a long and lasting one.

Dear Kathy.Yes,exciting news about Kate!We are having lovely early autumn days in Wales, warm by day and cool at night. The grand total of fish caught on the Dyfi this season was 437.It’s so very quiet there today,Monty must be well on his way through France now.I had my sock all ready for Monday and it hasn’t been cancelled!Marty’s got new pillows and has been made a doctor! He’s getting so many new “likes”!Mango’s mum has a surprise for her today maybe she found her dresses!Joey’s momma/agent is back in work and they are going to decide what to do in his memory. The studio will be a strange place for her without him. He’ll reach 340,000 soon.Poor Buddy had to visit the doggy doctor last week and Boo was blue but they were soon back together.Human refused to do the ice-bucket challenge and donated instead.Loved watching them lapping up the water.Zoe was enjoyed her ice-cream yesterday and such a beautiful prayer from her in readiness for 9/11.Have a lovely day.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
The Royal lineage continues…Wow! 437 fish! The ones who are left can rest a lot easier now! Today is going to be a “Marty Monday” so it should be a lot more tolerable, allegedly. Cute! Dr. Marty…VERY impressive! I’ll bet Mango’s purdy dresses have been found. Fingers crossed! When you’re a fashionista you thrive on knowing where all your outfits are. Did they decide where to bury Joey? I hadn’t heard if they did. I think the Garden would be the perfect place. Feeling bad for all of them. The studio must feel so empty without Joey. Glad to see that Boo and Buddy were back together. I wonder why they kept Buddy at the doctor’s the entire day? Hope nothing is going on with him! That was a very clever way of dealing with the ice bucket challenge. Human is very imaginative! Zoe’s ice cream video was precious! She and her Mommy are very kind and sensitive. Another 9/11 Anniversary. It always takes me back to the actual event. Such a surreal day. You couldn’t believe the images you were seeing. Our world certainly changed that day. Have a great day. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy.

JudyB. Very happy to hear this. Was concerned there for a minute that Frankie had not lasted even one day in the barn. Maybe Frankie can take on the role of security guard for the farm? If KathyR is right, and he’s like the Aussie emus, he can kick out intruders – literally.
