Dear Z Fans:
Sad news for horse racing in New England. The plans for a casino at Suffolk Downs have fallen through and it looks like the track will be closing. Suffolk is the last remaining Thoroughbred Horse Racing Track in NE. It was opened 79 years ago. That’s were Charlie and Hudson raced. Same thing happened to Narragansett Park in Rhode Island in the late 70s.

Judy; What is happening to our race tracks disappearing. Do you have pictures of Charlie and Hudson when they raced??
love n hugs, Sally B
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Sally:
When Angela officially adopted Charlie in September 2012, I contacted Suffolk Downs Track Photographer and purchased some of Charlie’s Winner’s Circle Photos as a gift for Angela. Angela also purchased three of Charlies winning race replays videos. I don’t have any racing photos of Charlie or Hudson myself. I will see if Angela can send me copies of Charlie’s Winner’s Circle photos and I’ll post them here. Love and Hugs, JB

Judy,
It is sad to see tracks closing but racing is not drawing in the young crowd. Most of the people I know who go to the track and/or are interested in the horses are on the down side of 50.
We need more stars to stay on the track longer and a way to bring in the 20 and 30 year olds. Don’t have an answer.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Shirlee:
That’s so true. Horses like Zenyatta, Barbaro, Chromie, Rachel, Wise Dan bring positive attention to racing, but the tried and true horse racing fans are a fading breed themselves. Love and Hugs, JB
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Judy B.,
I am so sorry to hear this about Suffolk Downs. Feel so badly for the people and horses associated with this fine old racetrack. Another institution falls to the developers axe.
Thanks for posting this. Hugs and Lots of Love

Dear Marshall:
Yes, it’s sad to see the last TB track in New England close. The saddest part of all are the horses that are needing homes. Some have injuries. Hoping that Canter NE can place all of them in safe homes. Love and Hugs, JB

@Sandy–thanks for the update on our guy, Hovis. If there is a chance of a joint problem, I do not believe I would be letting him jump. Maybe those who know more about this could enlighten me, but that is a huge stress on joints, especially for a big horse. Power up, big boy.

September 17 Cherokee Devotional
The winner carries with him the quiet knowledge that though he has heard every argument, faced every opponent, felt every criticism, there is no turning back and no accepting defeat. Telling a winner that something is impossible is waving a red flag, a ga da ti. He insists on going ahead, persisting until what he is doing is so well-known to him that there is nothing left to do but win. Every winner knows in his heart that he is not alone. His spirit and his dream merge so that even a loss would only be a delay. What we put into an idea, what we dream it can be, what we believe for and work toward is likely to make it take shape.
In my early days I was eager to learn and to do things, and therefore I learned quickly.

DRF is reporting that Street Cry has died. RIP Street Cry

Here is the article
Press release, 17 September 2014
Darley and Godolphin’s leading sire and outstanding Dubai World Cup winner Street Cry dies aged 16.
Street Cry, one of the world’s most successful stallions and a cornerstone of Sheikh Mohammed’s racing and breeding operations for the past 14 years, has been put to sleep at the age of 16 after succumbing to complications relating to a neurological condition.
The runaway winner of the Dubai World Cup and Stephen Foster for Godolphin in 2002 was retired to stand at Darley’s Jonabell Farm in Kentucky in 2003 and has been a headline stallion ever since. His first crop included the incomparable Zenyatta and Street Sense – still the only horse to win both the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and the Kentucky Derby.
Street Cry has made a similar impact in Australia, siring two Caulfield Guineas winners in Long John and Whobegotyou and Emirates Melbourne Cup winner Shocking. In all, Street Cry has sired 15 G1 winners and almost 150 Black type performers worldwide to date.
His legacy as a sire of sires is already well established.Three of his young stallion sons have sired G1 winners.
Sheikh Mohammed’s Bloodstock Advisor John Ferguson said, “Street Cry epitomised everything that Darley and Godolphin aim to achieve – he was bred by Sheikh Mohammed in Ireland, excelled at the very highest level on the racecourse in Dubai and the US, and then became the lynchpin of our stallion operations in both America and Australia. His contribution to the breed has been significant and we have been so fortunate to have him. He will be sorely missed by everyone.”
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Such sad news Jan. Thanks for sharing it here among “family” so that we can all grieve together. Hope peeps give Zenny (and his other children and grandchildren) an extra hug today.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Jan and Z Fans:
So sad when we lose any one of them, but this is hitting me really hard. Was so afraid for him. He lives on through Zenyatta, her Full Brother and all of his beautiful Sons and Daughters and through Z’s babies ZI, Z Princess and COZ, who always reminds me of him. Run free and without pain Beautiful Boy. Rest In Peace.

Judy,
Not only did he give us our beloved Zenyatta and her princes and princess but also a Classic winner in Street Sense who won the Derby.
Seems awfully young to leave us but if he was in pain, they did the right thing. We know he was cared for all the days of his life and was never a “throw away” horse.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Shirlee and Sandy:
He was a very special horse, indeed. Love and Hugs, JB

Thanks so much Judy. I had never seen him race – and this was a great one!

Thanks, Judy. So sad that Zenny’s sire passed — only 16 is rather young. What an elegant stallion.

To Zenny,
So very sad for you today girl, on the loss of your beautiful daddy, Street Cry. We are all very grateful to him for giving us YOU. I wish he could have come back to the US, will always wonder if anyone here could have helped him, not that he didn’t get excellent care there. Such a tragic loss…. wish they would explain more about the neurological issue he was dealing with. At least he has progeny that will help keep him alive, especially you. hugs to all

Del Mar Fall Meet Offers 14 Stakes
During 15-Day November Run
Del Mar Newsletter September 17, 2014
Fourteen stakes races – nine of them graded – will serve as the touchstones for Del Mar’s new November race meeting opening Friday, November 7 for a 15-day run through Sunday, November 30. The total value of the stakes package is $2,250,000.
The seaside track picked up a majority of the racing dates from the fall meeting at the now-closed Hollywood Park and in the process transferred over many of that track’s major stakes events. The Hollywood session had an emphasis on turf racing and Del Mar is carrying that forward with nine turf stakes on its agenda, including its two top offerings – the $300,000 Hollywood Derby and the $300,000 Matriarch, both Grade I events that will be run on closing weekend, which is part of the long Thanksgiving holiday.
