California Chrome draws #1 in the Pennsylvania Derby
Horse Racing Nation September 15, 2014
As the last huge race restricted to three-year-olds, the 2014 Pennsylvania Derby has attracted a strong field of eight sophomore males looking for not only a sizable payday, but also to head to the Breeders’ Cup Classic on a winning note. Headlining the million dollar race Saturday at Parx will be the long awaited return of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, California Chrome. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the nine furlong Pennsylvania Derby from the rail out …
1- California Chrome (even) Victor Espinoza – The winner of 5-of-6 of this year, including smashing wins in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, needs little introduction.

Oh boy, I bet Chrome’s connections are not happy with that position. Is anyone going to the PA Derby?
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear BGG:
Thanks for this analysis on the PA Derby. Rooting hard for Chromie. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
If the Beast can win from gate 1, so can Chromie.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
I agree. If Chromie is feeling strong and ready, he’ll do just fine. Godspeed CC. Love and Hugs, JB
shirleeinindy
Very few are happy with the #1 post. Just ask Rosie, Vicars In Trouble and the Ramseys!
Good luck and safe trip to Chromie and all the horses. Going to be at Churchill so gotta put a little money on Rosie. Can’t expect too much from Chrome first time out after a layoff. Just a tune up for later races.
Max
Chromie fans everywhere. Take heart about that gate and don’t get discouraged. The Beast wired it from post 1 at Belmont back in June. He could not get out of and away from that gate any faster, and that’s not real easy for a tiny beast. Hope that Chromie does the same.
Layoffs of six months had no effect on Quevega. Dan did well after 3 months away and after being seriously sick. Chromie, good luck to you. Don’t forget to use that nasal strip to full advantage. It’s sometimes all about the nose.

Dear Max.At last Aidan and Joe have commented on Australia’s loss.Young Joe has ,sort of,blamed himself saying he should have made more of the horse. In my opinion he made too much of him taking him so ridiculously wide!Hindsight is a wonderful thing. He will most probably run on Champions Day at Ascot not the Arc as first thought.I cannot understand why they didn’t keep running in a mile and 1/2 races. This is what he was perfectly bred to do as we saw in the Derby his best win I think.I feel sad for the horse that he’s got such a stupid jockey! And he will meet GG at Ascot again!Treve is going for the Arc despite her disappointing run yesterday,Thank you for the video last night certainly reminds me of the British turf.Lovely to see Kauto out and about. He LOVES his special King George rug!!Free the Moose It’s Monday Marty’s not participating!Sheena.
Max
Sheena. Read that remark from the young Joe. He really needs to start eating.
Glad you liked the video. Woodbine turf is rather impressive. Danny holds the race and track record at a mile. He burned it last year.
Simcock says that Sheikhzayedroad may go back to Woodbine for the International on October 19. It’s either there or Ascot. That’s Joshua Tree’s race with Ryan Moore. He also said that he will likely send Trade Storm to Santa Anita. Why not? This horse clearly likes to travel and he will have all his expenses paid.
Think that the decision on Estimate is good. She can race at Ascot. Cannot do much better than that. Some want her to go to Frankel after retirement. The Queen is always circumspect about those things.
Read about Hovis. 3 days for an X-ray? Most vets here would have him vanned to the hospital right away if it was serious. They also make barn calls in the middle of the night for horses in distress. Got to be Hovis drama?
Liberty for the Moose! Beast, I’m counting the days. Snake and Dan, do your training but don’t over do it.
Doreen in CT
I can’t believe that I missed my Isabella Sings run in her second race, a Grade 2 no less this past Saturday, where of course, she finished second. I thought I saved her in my stable, but I guess I didn’t – but good for her – I thought that Pletcher might do that and test her too quick – she does show a lot of promise – I just wish that with two-year olds – they would take their time with them – they’re just babies.

I just looked at the picture of her in the article, and it looks like she got a little dinged up and has a gash on her chest/shoulder area.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Doreen:
Hope she’s OK. Love and Hugs, JB
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
I was disappointed too, Doreen. Especially because I had met her Daddy back in June. The gash does look nasty – hope she’s OK. Poor baby :-(
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Hi all,
I did win somethng capping, don’t know how much yet, picked Kaigun to Place and he did yippee.
I was also thrilled for my dear “Indy” as his daughter won a big grass race at Woodbine, beat some good horses too. Her name Is Deceptive Vision, 4 yr old who has been off for a year. She is now eligible for BC Filly and Mare Turf…..YIPPEE. Congrats to the owners and Lanes End’s Indy.

Dear Max.Our poor boy waiting in pain for 3 days for an X-ray!!!Not good service for a superstar!I couldn’t help thinking Frankel was so fortunate to be with Sir Henry and not Coolmore. Can you imagine??The Queen will decide who Estimate visits you know how knowledgable she is!It would be great for Trade Storm to travel to SA and win! There was a great piece on Ryan Moore in the RP today well-respected all over the world.Free the Moose PU Hovis and the Beast!Sheena.
Max
Sheena. If Trade Storm goes to Santa Anita and Dan goes, they would be in the same race. I like Trade Storm but he is no where near the calibre of Wise Dan. His time at Woodbine was 136. Dan raced the same distance on that track in 131. Huge difference. If he’s at his best at Santa Anita, and doesn’t get into a fight with Uncle Johnny, no horse has a chance against him. Horses like Dan are rare and wonderful to behold. Dan is a superstar with courage and stamina the likes of which few of us will ever see again.

Some of you will no doubt remember this beautiful son of Pleasant Colony, Behrens. He passed away at the age of 20 at Old Friends at Cabin Creek in NY on 9/14/14. He raced in NY, FL, NJ, MA and Dubai; 27 starts, 9 wins, 8 seconds and 3 thirds and earned over 4.5M dollars. RIP beautiful boy.

Had a dreadful afternoon. Was in the study on the computer and heard a thump – went to investigate and found General had fallen off the lounge where he’d been sleeping, and was on the floor, thrashing his legs and shaking badly. Pulled him to my lap and comforted him, all the while thinking that I was unable to get to the phone in the kitchen: after a moment did leave him and rushed to get the phone and called the vet. By this stage General was on his feet, a little shaky, but very clingy so off we went. We’ve had blood taken, and the vet is looking at the likelihood of epilepsy, with the worst scenario a brain issue, like a tumour. It will take around a fortnight to get the results back. Feel so bad because I think I’m responsible for putting my curly headed boy under too much stress by leaving him alone when I visit with my little girl. He just hates being left alone. Will never forgive myself if something happens. And now I’m worried about not being able to visit with Thurzel. Sorry to rabbit on, but just had to get this off my chest. Could I please ask for a prayer for General? He doesn’t deserve this. Hugs KathyR.
Kathy
Dear KathyR
Oh no! Prayers going up for General!
Hugs, “the other Kathy”
Barbara Wood
Absolutely. Kathy R. We are here for you and General. Please update when you can. Hugs.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
So sorry to hear about General’s illness. Please don’t blame yourself. I think whatever is causing his seizures is not caused by your having to leave him. Praying for General and you and a positive report from the doctor. Hoping the vet can resolve General’s condition and help him recover. Love and Hugs, JB

Kathy,
Sending healing prayers for General, hope its not serious, if it is Epilepsy they do have medications. hugs

Kathy R – Thinking of you and General. Agree with those above – don’t think you are to blame here. There are wonderful medications available if it does turn out to be epilepsy or some other neurologic disorder. Take care and keep us posted.

September 16 Cherokee Devotional
There are many days when everything in the world stands taller than we do. It leaves us with a feeling of inadequacy, a notion that no matter what we do, others can do it better. But we can’t give up here. Other people are on their path, and we are on ours. Fair comparisons cannot be made-not even by those who claim to be experts. Only time-a li yi li sv-shows who has what it takes to handle life well. It is just that some days take more out of us than others. And sometimes we take more than we give. Life and circumstances balance when we are not so intent on counting only what goes wrong. When we take the responsibility for ourselves and begin to live instead of waiting for a time to be happy-then we will stand taller than the world.
The white men and Indians kept fighting each other backward and forward, and then I came in and made peace myself.

Dear Sheena,
Fubu won the contest! YAY!!!
Hugs, Kathy.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Kathy. So sad to hear about KathyR’s General!Remember when Fubu had his seizure and how good he is at the moment! He is so happy to have won the contest and he’s growing his winter coat!It would be my parents wedding anniversary today 73yrsand my Grandad’s birthday tomorrow.I never knew my other grandfather he died when I was 2yrs old.
Marty had a lovely salad to celebrate the end of another Monday!Boo and Buddy were celebrating a Bears win.Poor Theba was finding life hard without Joey yesterday she’s not the only one.I often find myself in tears looking back at his pics and videos.
It was good of Renay to post a Mango message even if she did want to go out and get a picture of her mom.She won’t be happy until mom is safely home.I hope she has her 45.with her on that long trip.Joey had a lovely story about a cat called Honeybee she’s blind but goes on hikes!Ray had a great time over the weekend too!Have a Wonderful day.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
Yes, feeling so bad for KathyR. Hopefully General will respond well to treatment. That was wonderful that Fubu won the contest. I know they were anxious about one of the other contenders having so many FB followers. Happy Anniversary to your parents and Happy Birthday to your grandfather, all up in heaven. Marty is eating pretty healthy for the moment. Good for him! Boo and Buddy adorable as always. Poor Theba, missing Joey SO MUCH. I know how I feel and I only knew him for FB, not in the flesh. Hope the time goes by fast for little Mango. Hope other Mommy spoils her a little. She’s so precious! Will have to look up the story about Honeybee. Bless Ray. Such a handsome and lovable boy! I have to run to the store for my aunt who is not feeling well. Have a great day. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
Back from the store. My aunt is doing better. Watched Honeybee’s video. She gets around so well! Such a pretty cat. Bless her!

Dear Max.So sad to hear of the retirement of Sea the Moon.He has left us with so many what if’s!He’s at the Newmarket Equine Clinic so is in the best place. Will make a brilliant stallion though.I didn’t know Trade Storm would have to take on WD no hope for TS then!!!They are thinking of sending Brown Panther over for the Breeders Cup.It would be amazing for Michael Owen who bred him.He will most probably go for the Ascot race though.Happy retirement STM.Free the Moose PU Beast.Sheena.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Sheena:
My gosh, I did not know Sea The Moon was retiring; sad, only three years old. Wish he could have raced a while longer. Hope he has a healthy, happy life. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
Sheena. I am sorry to hear about Sea The Moon. He had such promise. I guess that he can have a good stud career. He would be in competition with his sire who is proven as a stallion. Sea The Stars is also very young with a better race record.
Free the Moose! Beast, another day down to your return. Dan and Snake, hope you are training well.
Max
Sheena. Some of the RP fans were saying that Brown Panther ought to go to Woodbine for the Canadian International. The turf would really suit him more than Santa Anita, especially that backstretch run. That is Joshua Tree’s race. Any word on whether JT will head again to Toronto?
Vote Yes to free the Moose! Beast, turn off the lights and get some rest. Same for you, Snake and Danny.
vicki
Thanks for the good wishes. I feel much better. All those fluids make me slosh. I have given my heart to Chrome but what about Dude? Will he be eligible to run in the Classic? I know he hasn’t won in awhile but still he should have what could be his last chance. His owners owe him that much. Have you ever seen such gorgeous two year olds? I did wonder when Coz had his first workout in company how he behaved. Did he have to be held back or was he raring to go? He’s been so full of energy since the day he was born and who can forget his squealing? The Texans have won 2 games in a row. The Aggies looked fantastic. Football is fine but it better not interfere with my races.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.I haven’t heard the plans for JT yet.I cannot really see Brown Panther coming out to the US think he will go for Ascot. It was such a shame about STM he was a brilliant horse we didn’t get to see the best of.Soon our Jumps season will begin and maybe Moose will be free to stand still again!I am getting very nervous about Thursdays vote. It’s so close!Free the Moose to jump again!PU Beast and all sick animals.Sheena.
Max
Sheena. Maybe not the BC, but Woodbine might be on the table? If he goes there, and if JT returns, they may both need blankets. It has snowed already big time in Alberta and some forecasts elsewhere are for lows of 34 F this weekend. Your Nissy may need to grow out his winter coat very quickly.
Don’t worry about that vote on Thursday. Think of what Burns said about being bought and sold by English gold, and look at Dave’s promises. The Declaration of Independence did not spring forth from any ballot box. Same for Ireland. Rest easy.
Moosie, what will you do when the beak yields? BDS, lights out.

Hovis update: Perhaps influenced by a desire to prevent a total meltdown on the part of his Mum, the vet was able to rearrange appointments, and Hovis was carted off for X-rays today. His Mum is away on business in Scotland, but issued the following report:
“Well the news is in. I’m not sure how I feel to be honest.
My wonderful wonderful vet’s view is it is his near side fore. The good news is his fetlock joints etc are “the joints of a young horse”.
The not so good news (my vet has banned me from saying bad news) is there are moderate changes in both coffin joints. My vet’s words were he’s seen worse in top class competitive horses so I’ve got to stop hyperventilating.
Next step is to nerve block him next week and then potential MRI scan. The down side is Til (the vet) is betting the bugger will be sound by next week and he is away until then.
If we confirm it is the coffin joint he’s recommending medicating them twice a year and in his view Hovis will be back out flying over XC jumps before you can say Mr Knickerless. It’s fair to say I feel sick.”
If anyone can explain what this says or means, please feel free (not sure if there is an Equine Health for Dummies book I can consult :-). Sandy
Max
Glad to hear that the report is a good one. Take it easy over those jumps and congrats on your youthful fetlocks, Hovis.
