December 3 Cherokee Devotional
The Indian way to handle tension and worry is to spend time alone in meditation. Touch the earth and see the sky, look at the stars that you never in the world could count. Listen to the night bird sing and hear the tree toad’s croaking song. Hear the hounds in the woods baying and the squalling of owls. These are basic things, common things, gentle things. Meditate on these. Close out the negative things of the world-the sensational and the shallow, the thoughtless words, offended airs, lofty attitudes. Let them pass as nothing, which they are. Close the door of your heart to all that is negative, and open it to the peace that passes all understanding. Let that peace rest your body, mind, and spirit.
Let everything be washed out, wiped out, and let there be no more blood.

Help Guys. I can’t find anything about Honor Code having surgery. What happened to him?
carol in arkansas
nothing happened….he is a ridgling and is having his one undesended testicle removed…I know Indy was the same…someone mentioned that he too had this surgery..but I cant find any articles about that…did find an article that stated that this surgery is done if it is felt that the “undesended” one interferes with the horses racing ability..but that is only one source and I am no expert

HONOR CODE HEADED TO SOUTH FLORIDA AFTER SURGERY FOR RIDGLING CONDITION
by Paulick Report Staff | 12.01.2013 | 2:45pm
Honor Code left the Big Apple a victor, following his big win in the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct on Saturday. According to the Daily Racing Form, the ridgling left by van on Sunday to the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., where he will undergo a procedure to remove an undescended testicle.
After which, the A.P. Indy colt is scheduled to resume training at Payson Park in Indiantown, Fla., the same facility that trainer Shug McGaughey trained last year’s Kentucky Derby winner, Orb.
“All we’re trying to do is eliminate what could be a potential problem,”McGaughey said of the medical procedure. He hopes to give Honor Code two starts before the Kentucky Derby, possibly making his 3-year-old debut in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 22.
Honor Code closed in Saturday’s Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager as the favored individual horse at 10-1.

Kathy & Carol, thanks for the news about Honor Code. Doesn’t sound like a fun surgery but not too serious. Hope all goes well. Hope he can breed as his bloodlines are scary good.

Dear Kathy Nature with all it’s sights and sounds is a wonderful healer. Been checking on my FB furbabies, not a good forecast from Joey, Ray is waiting for his cookie and Ava’s buddy Bulldiggity passed over on Monday RIP. Have a lovely day. Hugs to you and kisses for the puppy pack. Sheena
Kathy
Hi Sheena,
This is the time of year when we see nasty weather in parts of our country. Ray and Hawley are so adorable I would be tempted to give them 2 or 3 cookies! So sorry about Bulldiggity. Nothing worse than losing a beloved pet. On the upside, the pic of Boo and Buddy is precious.
Happy Tuesday.
Hugs from me, kisses from The Pack. Kathy

sheena-Saw a great program on the Smithsonian Channel yesterday about the remains of Richard III. It appears that the skeleton under the parking lot was actually his. The people conducting the examination were able to find a relative on the female side of the family to do DNA testing and it was a match. They also had a forensic reconstruction of his face and it was a striking match with all of the paintings that are available of him. This is probably old news to you but I found it quite interesting.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
Read an article about the find and it is very interesting and amazing that they were able to find and identify his remains. Always enjoyed history and especially reading about the monarchs of England. Love and Hugs, JB
Terry Crow
Judy-If you get a chance to see the program on the Smithsonian Channel, don’t miss it. A lot of background info in why this particular “find” was pursued. Some differences of opinion about Richard were also discussed. Even when you know, you never know.
Patti
Mama Z…you are incredible to look at. I know nothing about proper body lines, etc. in horses, but have ALWAYS been drawn to your pictures. I loved watching you on TV as I wasn’t able to see you in person (went to Lane’s End just to be as close to you as I could get), but haven’t been able to actually see you. What is it about you that always makes me smile? Have a great day, Mama Z; you’re the greatest!
Nicki Boyd-Clouston1
Riglings are congenital. A. P. Indy is one himself & tend to be passed on. I was a Persian/Himalayan cat breeder & this undescended testicle issue was considered a fault. We were not allowed to show a cat with this defect. I guess in Thoroughbreds this isn’t an issue. Is it because of the value of the horse in question? This is a genetic defect & I would like to know the reasoning for continuing the breeding of these lines. Also, Nasrullah/Bold Ruler were known to have heart problems & they were very successful sires. Any comments out there? Thanks
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
The reason these lines continue is that they produce successful race horses. If the horse is sufficiently talented and the retained testicle doesn’t interfere with running, then his owners will do everything they can to preserve his breeding potential. That’s where the money is, after all. The proportion of ridglings that are allowed to remain intact is probably small, anyway. Most colts, ridgling or not, eventually end up as geldings.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Hi Laura,
Always nice to see you here and appreciate your knowledgeable input :-)
Sandy
Terry Crow
Agree. LauraJ is an exceptional contributor to the blog.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
The ratio of number of normal colts to those sons with the problem is very small. Indy has produced many, many babies and very few I’ve ever heard of were ridgelings. There are others out there from different sires, however.
Janet Newman
A.P. Indy underwent the same surgery.
I think he was only the second horse to undergo the procedure back then.
Instead of gelding him, they wanted to try this in order to preserve his fertility.
Big thing is making sure the other testicle is not affected and Honor Code will need to watched very closely for and s/s of infection.
There are many sons and grandsons of A. P. Indy that are not ridglings, but it would be interesting to see how many ridglings came out of his crops.

Dear Terry Glad you found the programme about Richard 111 interesting. It’s amazing to think he had lain undisturbed since 1485. He is meant to be having a funeral fit for an English King at Leicester Cathedral next year although York Minster would prefer he were buried there. We shall see . Have always loved history, was my favourite subject at school. Wales was just a principality back then.hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Is he having a Catholic funeral? He died as a Catholic monarch, not as a Protestant.
Terry Crow
sheena and Max-I believe he was the last of his line. Amazing that a relative on the female side of the family was found for comparison DNA testing. And, he was and is a Canadian. Apparently there is a lot of discussion even today as to whether he was the tyrant that he is so often depicted as being. After the forensic reconstruction of his face from the skeleton, there was little doubt it was him. Apparently, the horse did not arrive in time for him to make the trade.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark

Thanks for the feed-back re: cryptorchidism. I’m very glad they didn’t geld A. P. Indy. Is he what is called a Sire of Sires? That line has been so popular & successful in modern breeding. I ould love for Honor Code to be The Next Great One as there are no more little Indys coming along. Love A. P. Indy!!

Is anyone having trouble with the Bloodhorse site besides me? Every time I try to open it…..it throws me off and closes window…
Janet Newman
They were updating the site and I had a few issue with some, but not getting on.
I was on earlier today. I am not sure I like it as well. Nothing specific, but not the same either.
Sue Noel/Sun Valley,ID
@Barbara Wood–LOVED the story about Geraldine and Rex!! Too precious for words! Thanks for sharing it–it IS a must read!! Hope you got my birthday wishes a page or two back and hope your day was great!
Many thanks to all who enjoyed the Barnaby and Traveller update. You may not believe it,but I DO give them (and Sue too,of course, all of your messages for them–as well as apples and kisses (for the horses!)–some day,I’ll get a photo of Barnaby listening to me recite them to him–it is too cute! I must learn how to put the photos from my new digital camera onto my computer–and then learn how to get them to be a link on the blog!!
@ Max- Can’t wait to tell Barnaby that you eat Fuji apples because he recommends them!! He WILL have a swelled head over that one!!
@ Sandy-You are right about how much I want Barnaby to feel safe and comfy–and HAPPY!!! Remember in National Velvet when Elizabeth Taylor is talking to her father, after The Pi wins the Grand National and people want to exploit him and his fame, about how that would not be fair to him and that he would not like it and she says “I’d sooner see that horse happy than go to heaven”. That line always really resonated with me and I know just how she felt Making Barnaby happy is my priority!! By the way, when we talked the other day,you mentioned that I should check the post office this weekend–I still haven’t received anything from back your way–hope it is not lost! I’m riding the bus every day to work,so will not be able to check again until Saturday, but I DID check last night . Will call you on Saturday after I check.
Wow–the temperature here is plummeting and it is snowing–by the end of the week,it’s supposed to be below zero!! Hope it will be a little warmer where the horses are–just that 15 or 20 miles can make a big difference. Glad he has his new soft and cozy bed!
A few posts back, folks were talking about wolves—I LOVE wolves–and am friends with the folks who wrote the book and TV special “Living With Wolves”–if you have never seen either, check them out.The Dutchers are terrific people, who do so much for many species of wildlife, particularly wolves. We actually had a beautiful pack of black wolves living out in my neighborhood,in Sun Valley,a few winters ago. They were a few blocks from my place when they took down a big elk. You could see them feasting on it from our road–it was sad for the elk,but an amazing sight! I have seen foxes and racoons eating from the dishes on my patio and we hear coyotes most nights. I love living near wildlife. We have had several instances of bears breaking into houses here and having folks who live there coming home from an evening out and finding them in their house–just like “The Three Bears!”
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Sue – I was wondering about the package. I checked the email notification I received just to be sure I hadn’t misread it, and it still says the expected delivery was Nov. 30th. I’ve sent an email to customer service to see if they can track it. Stay tuned, and thanks for letting me know.
