Dear Sheena,
Just the word “suppertime” brings back all kinds of wonderful memories. My great grandmother was a great baker, she made yeast rolls that I could have made a meal out of. Just a couple of rolls, butter and maybe a little homemade jam. I’m so glad all is quiet on the dyfi. I’ll cross everything for egg #3, as well. Marty’s bizness seems to be going great. He would make a wonderful financial advisor! Poor little Fubu. I so wish his mouth would clear up. He must be in such pain. I look forward to his video. I enjoyed Zoe’s post about Auntie Mitzi. She and her mom are both so kind. Bless them. Did you see the funny “Barkalounger” pic on Joey’s page? Hilarious! Have a great Friday Eve. Hugs from me, kisses from Holy, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy.

A Birthday Poem for Jerry Moss
(May 8, 2012)
Revised
Dear Mr. Moss,
The “M” of the A & M label,
We’re glad that your path did cross
With the then unnamed Z,
Known at Keeneland just as Hip 703.
Dear Music Man,
You were blessedly able
Together with your Ann
Yearling Z’s
Potential to see,
And you set her on course
To become the horse
Of this century!
“Zenyatta”—her name
From your music came,
She heard the music, too,
And danced for us and for you.
She would not wait
Till each race was run–
Rejoicing in advance
Of the pending outcome,
Zenyatta the Great,
On her way to the gate,
True to form,
Her victory dance
Would perform!
Confidence pored
From her innermost core
And expressed itself in her dance,
For this eager racing warrior
Delighted in nothing more
Than on the track to compete
With all she saw
Who dared to come before her.
The glorious Z
Would finish victorious,
The others would end in defeat–
’Gainst her, they stood not a chance.
Dear Mr. Moss,
Looking back,
We see
You spared no training cost
And allowed Z
Time to grow
Before sending her to the track.
’Twas November of her third year
When she her racing began,
And then, oh my God, how she ran!
Nineteen wins in a row
In her brilliant racing career,
And she claimed her rightful place
As Queen
Of the racing scene,
Reigning supreme
Both in talent and in conditioning.
Then came her time for transitioning
To become a mom,
And you, Mr. Moss, with your team
Created this marvelous balm
Known as Zenyatta.com,
Which did so much do to calm
Those souls close to despair,
Who feared the Queen,
That most beloved mare,
Never again would be seen
When she did depart
From Barn 55
At Hollywood Park
To once more reside
In her native Kentucky,
Her new career
There to start.
We fans the worst did fear,
But we were very lucky
And able to take heart
When it became clear
That Team Z would do ever so much
To keep us in touch
With our cherished Zenny.
Dear Mr. Moss,
This world has ways—
There are many—
To separate gold from the dross.
In the A and M days,
You rose straight to the top
And never did stop.
Now you with Ann,
Your delightful wife,
Are Thoroughbred breeders, owners
And charitable donors
Extraordinaire,
And do all you can
To graciously share
Zenyatta, your marvelous mare,
With every fan.
Your generosity we’ll never forget!
We’re forever in your debt
And remain at a loss
To suitably thank you
For all that you do!
Happy birthday, Mr. Moss,
And may life
Have many returns more
For you in store!
Kathy

HAPPY,HAPPY BIRTHDAY,MR.MOSS !!!!!! I hope you have an absolutely perfect day!! Know you already have your BEST gift–the gorgeous Princess Z14!! I was so very honored to get to meet you and Ann at the Zenyatta party at BC2012!! I will always remember riding down in the elevator afterwards with you two and watching you head off into the lovely California night looking so happy together! I surely treasure the picture of Zenny and Mike that I bought that day and then had autographed by both you and Ann,Mike, both John and Dottie, and Tyler!!
Glad some of you enjoyed the “carrot” story! She could be very sweet,as long as you didn’t want her to DO anything. If she saw you with a halter in your hand, even with carrots,it might take 45 minutes to catch her! You had to hide the halter until she was right there eating–and, sometimes she would tear off even then! She loved being free and doing her own thing!! She would come from far off to my call–which was a kind of sing-song ,from high to low, RO-SIE HOO-HOO. Then, when she got close, she would check to see if I had treats–and/or the dreaded halter, before she would come all the way up.If all was well,in her opinion, she would come up and snuggle. She was really affectionate–everything just had to be on HER terms!! Her breeder told me that she got the right mom, because when Mary told me “she just wants to be a horse”,I said “OK by me–she can DO that”. I just loved watching her run free and loved it when she would come to me and let me love her–it’s so amazing that something so wild can pause to interact with you.
When Barnaby is galloping around the big arena,he will catch my eye and just come to me on his own sometimes. It is as if he sees me watching and says,”oh–it’s Mom,maybe she wants me!” Of course, when he does that I give him extra love–I think it is so sweet that he does that himself.
They have done the strangest thing at our barn. they have sprinklers that water down the indoor arena,so that it doesn’t get too dusty. The last couple of weeks, they have come on at the time we would normally have been riding in there. Luckily, both times we were NOT,or we would have had a catastrophe!! Thjey are both terrified of sprinklers and the first time it happened,we were grooming them in there. We just about had a rodeo on our hands!! Must call them today,as it may rain Saturday, according to the forecast,so we may need to ride inside.
Sally B. (Auntie cherishes Z and her young)
Sue sweet of Barnaby to come to you all on his own and be affectionate. He must know his mom!!
Goodness, hope the timing on the sprinkler system is changed and then the times to go on are posted for all to see. Yikes!
hugs, Sally B

Sheena. Noble Mission won and won well today. He’s really suddenly come into his own. Teddy Grimthorpe said that he used to be mercurial (i.e. like Moosie), but he seems to have turned over a new leaf. He’s still wearing his hood. Moose, time to do the same as Mission when the beak relents.

All good wishes to Jerry Moss and Nancy in NJ on your birthdays. Hoping for a beautiful day and wonderful times with friends and family. Again, Trina, your poems are glue that hold us together.
Sue Noel–oh no! That would have been a rodeo for sure if the sprinklers of doom had come on while you were riding. So glad all is ok.
Just don’t know which page to be “on”. If I had not been alerted, I would have still been on the other one…..

Dear Max.Yes,I know it’s so good about Noble Mission,he’s had 2 great runs now.It was a great idea to let him make all the running he’s showing what a powerful horse he can be.The 39 Grand National jockeys are up before the beak soon, no date has been set yet,Brendan Powell got a 5 day ban for overuse of the whip on Battlegroup in the Scottish Grand National,Bless him he only jumped 7 or 8 fences.A Sea the Stars daughter won the Cheshire Oaks his son didn’t do so well today the Ballydoyle horse won.Orchestra Australia is favourite for the Derby(so far).Free the Moose.Sheena.
Max
Sheena. I guess that it took a Lady to understand Noble Mission. I wonder if he still wears that elaborate monogrammed hood around the barn. I recall that Cecil said that Mission liked wearing it even when he was not racing, such as in his stall. The other horses must wonder what’s up. Zorro Mission.
5 days for whipping. Nine months for the Moose, who did nothing, literally. Cannot understand the beak. Peeps love to see and cheer the Moose.
Free the Moose! Neigh x 9!

Dear Max:
Voila Ici news. The entire is now with his third trainer, having been sacked by Peter Moody. He’s now with Saab Hasan, and will go round in the Cleanevent Handicap (1800m) at Flemington on Saturday. The grey is now rising 10, and has been winless in 14 Australian starts, including a midfield finish in the 2012 Melbourne Cup, and has finished last in his past three starts, two while still with Peter Moody and one under Shea Eden. Saab thinks he’s progressing well, psychologically and physically, and only has a small string of horses, so we’ll just wait and see. Just goes to show that Nelly gave him no hints at all on that flight back from Ascot. (And that information from Sportsman newspaper). Cheers, KathyR.
Max
Thank you for this update. Poor Voila Ici. It looks like Saloon was the love of her life after all. Any news on how BC is doing?
KathyR
Dear Max:
As is typical with broodmares Downunder, very little is released until the mare actually foals. But we’ve been told by her connections that she’s well, and so is her foal (an ultrasound has been conducted). Guess patience is the way to go. Cheers, KathyR.
PS: Saw Donna, her strapper, with another horse last Saturday – did seem odd to see her leading out an equine athlete other than Nelly!

Dear Kathy R.Our ospreys are excellent parents they will feed all the chicks although Monty is known as a bit of a “ladies man” he is a devoted dad.The female is always the first to migrate back to Africa and leaves them with dad.Once they fledge her work is over and she needs to build up strength for her long flight.Glesni is Monty’s 2nd “wife”they sadly lost Nora in 2012.A quiet day there today except for the wind and rain.!Hugs Sheena.

Dear Sheena:

Didn’t you say you heard Galileo and Goldikova were getting married.
When are we going to break this news to all the other Filly’s and Mare’s.
Just too cute……..
KathyR
Dear Peggy:
I’m still fossicking through my files to try and find the article that talked about the “marriage”. I think it was a stud manager, who felt that they could do no better than keep that breeding format in relation to Goldikova. Have heard it in relation to some of the mares down here. But I’ll keep looking. Think I need a wife myself to organise this stuff. Cheers, KathyR.

Thank you so much for Tiznow’s win in the 2001 classic. What a horse he is. Just beautiful

@Carol in Arkansas, your boy Rivers won the Tall Stack Stakes by 12 3/4 lengths (I assume he is “Rivers Run Deep”? He was a heavy favorite, ridden out at the finish.
How did you get to be interested in him, anyway? I missed the story.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
The short answer, as Carol’s mind and heart are probably elsewhere today, is that she spied him at Oaklawn, and it was love at first sight! He’s been in the money before, but I think this might have been his first win.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Kathy R
When I visited Darley America back many years ago now. The nicest most wonderful guy took me around to visit the horses. He was from Australia. So wish I could remember his name. I sent him a card thanking him for making my visit so nice and i got a note back from him. But can not remember his name now. You could really tell he loved the horses. Your posting here reminded me of him.
I was telling Judy I am one day going to call Darley, I want to check on Cherokee Run. Can’t find anything at all about him recently. I know he’s been pensioned, but would sure like to have an update on him. Loved him and his offspring especially War Pass, and his daughter, (My Gabby) and Kafwain, and Chelokee
KathyR
Dear Peggy:
How excellent to visit the Darley operation! They have a very good reputation down here as well. The big Darley (Australia) news of late has been the resignation of their trainer, Peter Snowden last year. Pete and his son Paul (who manages the Melbourne stable) are going it alone after six years with a powerhouse of international racing. In fact they had their first start as a new team on Tuesday at Newcastle (near Sydney) – it came in 8th. But the Snowden pair have always been so honest and straightforward in discussing their team and it won’t be the same not seeing them in the mounting yard. The new trainer is John O’Shea, who gets what a lot would say is a dream job, but it’s going to be interesting to see what changes he brings to the stable. Most of John O’Shea’s horses are being transferred to the Snowden camp, which is smart thinking on the part of the owners. And there’s talk of a possible change of retained jockey, which test the new arrangement in that the word is that the Sheik is very fond of Kerrin McEvoy (the retained jockey), so it might be a brave trainer who would want to risk that. Cheers, KathyR.
Ann NC
Happy Birthday, Jerry Moss, hope you have had a wonderful day.
Thank you for sharing, Zenny and her sweet foals.
Happy Birthday, Nancy in NJ. Have a nice birthday week and hope you can enjoy some great racing!

Hi all…wow, all kind of good news! Hoof ray!! First, California Chrome, then Zenyatta getting some well deserved R&R, and the birthdays, with Trina’s fitting regal poetry!! I’m still catching up, and will continue to do so.. Happy Special Birthdays to Sally, Nancy and to Jerry Moss. (Hope I did not miss someone in the middle. If so, happy birthday to you too!)
Terry Crow, where did you sit/stand at Los Al when there for the Derby? I’m curious–don’t know the track well, but do know some areas. Good for you that you were there!
I do want to comment on our Derby Day experiences (before the Preakness gets here already!) We were NOT in KY, but went all the way to a new 0TB in Lake Forest (Forrest?), a little south of Laguna. It is a VERY nice place. We met friends there- another couple; got there when they opened at 7am so got our pick of seating (except for some reserved seats), so we chose cubicles with monitors. In addition, there were huge screens all around. Food is served also, so we had breakfast and before the Derby, lunch. Food decent and inexpensive. Rod also had a gin & tonic and in the spirit of The Day, a mint julep. I had a sip and that was enough–SWEET. Anyway, the atmosphere was great– as the day went on the more crowded it got–eventually SRO. The four of us wore our ‘Chrome pins we had gotten the Sat before at Los Al when we saw the champ’s last work-out. (After his win, that made it all the more special that we had been to Los Al at that time.) I could go and on about all that went on, but suffice it to say the crowd went WILD with our boy’s win. In my enthusiasm of jumping up and down I knocked over my chair, but no one noticed or cared.–I had to pick it up myself. With our monitors we could get lots of stations including NBC Sports, so that was nice. When it came Derby time, they put on the NBC broadcast. So, at my seat I had the Churchill feed, then all around us was NBC. Even those of us who could sit–well we didn’t. :-) TOO EXCITING!!!! Just too much fun!!
I will do one bit of name dropping: in a betting line (the cash teller lines were longer than the machine lines) Rod ran into Guy Fieri–from The Food Network. They shook hands. He had his sunglasses on “backwards,” like he does on TV. He is also thinner and taller than he appears on the tube.
If you’ve managed to read this far, please be advised that Cowtownmary is running tomorrow in the 4th race–4:30 California (Chrome) time. Claiming, six furlongs. Rod and a couple of others are going. Unfortunately, I can’t–I can’t leave work early due to having to cover for co-worker who already had put in to leave early for a dr. app’t. :-( I shall rush home to view it on TV. And get this, per the Form, he is the favorite–at this time 5-2. A seven horse race; we are # 6. He seems to be the favorite a lot. I have given Rod my bets and also asked him to do an exacta box with #2, Kanuck Kowboy. Kowboy and Cowtown, what a pair, ha ha, Wish us luck, Dumplings!
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Best of luck tomorrow, Anne, to you, Rod, Cowtown and Kowboy, Safe trip to all, and we’ll pray that there is no claim on your Cowtown. BTW, Terry Crow explained the historical meaning of the designation “a cowtown Mary” to me, so now i understand why it really is a clever name for a gelding, especially one who has Cowtown Cat and A Letter From Mary in his pedigree. Still the commentators (and the public?) get confused and generally refer to him with feminine pronouns. Love and hugZ, Trina
Terry Crow
Anne-Los Al does not have daytime racing as of yet. It starts in July. During the day, it is strictly used for satellite wagering. I was planning on being there for the live quarter horse racing that night so I watched the race in the barn area. It was really jumping there, especially after the race. Later on I went to the upper grandstand and watched the televised races and went outside to see the live racing. Pulling hard for Cowtown Mary.

Dear Carol, with sadness I read your message that Roxy has passed to the Rainbow Bridge. Perhaps you’ve seen the following poem before, but today it is meant to be a poem to you from Roxy. It is not my creation, but it is sent with great sympathy and in the hope that it will warm your heart even more than my own verses. Love and hugz, Trina
You’re giving me a special gift,
So sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days,
Your courage makes me proud.
But really, love is knowing
When your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts
Will only be in vain.
So looking deep into your eyes,
Beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic that will
Once more make me whole.
The strength that you possess
Is why I look to you today,
To do this thing that must be done,
For it’s the only way.
That strength is why I’ve followed you,
And chose you as my friend,
And why I’ve loved you all these years…
My partner ’til the end.
Please, understand just what this gift
You’re giving means to me,
It gives me back the strength I’ve lost,
And all my dignity.
You take a stand on my behalf,
For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right,
For I believe it too.
So one last time, I breathe your scent,
And through your hand I feel
The courage that’s within you,
To now grant me this appeal.
Cut the lead that holds me here,
Dear friend, and let me run
Once more strong and steady,
My pain and struggle done.
And don’t despair my passing,
For I won’t be far away,
Forever here, within your heart,
And memory I’ll stay.
I’ll be there watching over you,
Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I’ll run,
…a young pup once again.

carol-I feel like I have lost my best friend. No matter how many pets we have loved, and lost, it never gets any easier. Roxy was blessed to have you as her care giver and friend.
