Dear Fans,
Today we celebrate what would have been our filly’s first birthday by remembering the joy that she brought to the world. We created a memorial page for Z Princess with a collection of images, videos and memories from those who loved her.
This page will always be here on Zenyatta.com in celebration of her life.
With love,
Team Z
Deb E.
Here’s my recommendation for Horse Racing Divas, the book I got last week. It is a thorough and comprehensive book about the 12 fillies and mares who have been accorded horse racing’s highest honor: Horse of the Year. Some of the horses I had never heard of because for one reason or another their names have been lost to history or forgotten, others I knew or remembered very well. One thing that bothered me during my reading was looking at each “diva’s” track record and seeing how LONG some of those older 19th Century/ early 20th Century records were; even after the mare stopped winning she was kept racing then either sold or put out to pasture for breeding. One mare named Imp’s record goes on for 4 pages!!!! The later horses were raced an acceptable amount, but NOT beyond their endurance (Thank God for owners like the Jacksons and the Mosses who treat their champions Rachel and Zenny like the Queens they are). The horses featured are listed chronologically:
Miss Woodford (1883-84)
Imp (1899)
Beldame (1904)
Regret (1915)
Twilight Tear (1944)
Busher (1945)
Moccasin (1965)
All Along (1983)
Lady’s Secret (1986)
Azeri (2002)
Rachel Alexandra (2009)
Zenyatta :-) (2010)
Horse Racing Divas is a great book with lots of interesting facts, statistics, and memories of all the different eras of horse racing. Archival photos and race records for each champion are also included. The chapters on Azeri, Rachel, and Zenny all feature beautiful color photographs including one of Z right after she landed at Mayberry to begin training; she’s big in the photo, but nothing like the Amazon she’d become!

Dear Deb E:
Thanks for this list of Great Horse of the Year Divas. There’s one more they have to add 2011 HOY Harve de Grace. Love and Hugs, JB
SallyB.(AuntiecherishesZandheryoung)
Judy B. Oh my, I agree with you. Havre de Grace earned the HOY and should be in this interesting book: an outstanding awesome horse.
Thanks Deb E. for your insight.
hugs, Sally B
maureen ph[llips
Dear Debbie E,
Who is Harve de Grace’s daddy and mama ??. Thanks and have a restful night. It is well always at Z Nation where love always abounds. Thanks.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
She’s by Saint Liam, out of Easter Bunnette (Carson City). She was foaled 05.12/2007 in Kentucky.
One has to be careful with the spelling of her name, though. The 2011 Horse of the Year is Havre de Grace. There’s also a 2000 mare named Harve de Grace who was not anywhere near the racehorse that Havre de Grace was. Very confusing.
Roberta
The site is http://thoroughbredancestry.com and the author is Colin Nolte, It really is worth a look and see!!
Marshall (NC Broad)
Thanks for this link — well written and very interesting! Mr. Nolte writes beautifully and gives us lots of insight into these wonderful champions.
Thanks, again, Roberta!

Dear Judy.Poor Nissy’s not doing well. His peep#1 made him some chicken broth he ate a bit last night but she’s been feeding him with a syringe today.I’ve left a message on his FB.
Hopefully Deri and Gwynant are alive and well still in Africa.Given the 2 girls from 2013 Clarach and Cerist have survived they could return this year. Our royal baby is overdue now!Goodnight God bless you LM PC HT Cap Hercules Frank and all the Sweeties.Love and hugs SheenaX

Dear Sheena:
Oh, so sad to know Nissy is not doing well. Will pray hard for him. Hope his Peeps can keep him comfortable; poor baby.
The new Royal Prince or Princess is keeping everyone waiting. Love and Hugs, JB, LM, PC, HT, Cap, Herc, Frank and all the Sweeties
Deb E.
I keep checking CNN to see if the Cambridges have landed at St. Mary’s yet, but so far nothing. The royal couple were nice enough to send breakfast pastries to everyone who’s been waiting outside the hospital so patiently. From all indications, it seems like the entire British commonwealth (and the world) is hoping for a sister for George.

Dear Debbie E,
Yes, a sister would be nice. Have an awesomely Blessed day. It is well. Much love.

Kentucky Derby Post Position Draw. Wednesday April, 29. 5.30pm eastern. Good luck to all.
shirleeinindy
Peggy,
Hope the Ramsey’s horse, International Star, gets a decent post to make up for that #1 post last year for little Vicars In Trouble. Thank goodness Rosie pulled him up without injury. Dortmond probably could handle it as he doesn’t seem to let anything bother him and with his size the “ain’t” gonna push him around.
Miss Rosie in this year’s Derby.

He broke my heart. Had to stay away from racing for a time after he left us.

Happy Birthday to my beloved Barbaro! Adore that horse. And his owners, trainer and jockey!
sheena.davies(wales)
Remembering the mighty, courageous Barbaro on his special day.Love and hugs SheenaX
Deb E.
Barbaro was a Pennsylvania horse like Lil E.T. and Smarty Jones, and we loved him so much. The whole state was devastated by his breakdown at the Preakness, and we rooted for him as he fought to overcome his injury and live. Unfortunately, that damn laminitis took his life just as so cruelly robbed us of Secretariat. Love you always, Barbaro.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Happy Birthday beautiful Barbaro. RIP. Love and Hugs, JB
maureen ph[llips
Ditto that.
SallyB.(AuntiecherishesZandheryoung)
Happy Birthday to Barbaro as well! I do not think there was a dry eye around the world, when we learned they had no choice but to euthanize him. Barbaro fought so hard and was so courageous. Love to him always,
Sally B
Ingrid Arnone
Yes, we love you Barbaro, RIP!

I will never get caught up on the posts. We had a horrific storm move through in the middle of the night. The snapping of the pine trees as the tornadoes went through were terrifying. Reminded me of Hurricane Ike. Many trees down. No injuries. We just got power restored yesterday evening. And it got really cold and windy after the storm passed and we had no heat. Carpe Diem may not win the race but I just love the look of him and that sweet face.
Bluegrass Girl
vIcki. so glad you are safe.
Storm sounds terrible & very damaging.

Kentucky Derby 2015 – The X-Factor
Laurie Ross Horse Racing Nation April 29, 2015
Does the large heart factor play a role in the Kentucky Derby?
http://www.horseracingnation.com/blogs/pedigree_power/Kentucky_Derby_2015_The_X_Factor_123
Note: Interesting read Zenyatta has it One characteristic is curly ears.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear BGG:
Thank you for this; interesting read. Love and Hugs, JB
shirleeinindy
BGG,
That is very interesting. I had heard that Big Red had the large heart but did not know about the others. This does change a bit my worries about AF and his 4.33 dosage since the large heart contributes to endurance.
Ingrid Arnone
Dear Blue,
Thanks for the link.
Hugs Ingrid.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
Sorry, not buying it. For one thing, the genome of the horse has been sequenced and no gene or set of genes that determines heart size has been found on the X chromosome. Second, how does the author know that Zenyatta has a “large” heart? (I’m sure it’s big, but she’s a big horse.) Her heart would have to have been measured via X-ray or ultrasound, and the information made available. for comparison to a database of other horse hearts. Third–curly ears correlate with heart size? Citation needed. Actually, a huge flaw in the article is that it contains no references whatsoever, much less to peer-reviewed research.

Dear Peggy (N)

But, like you said, win or lose we will continue to love them and pray they all come home safe. Lastly, could you tell me about your lovely fine faced boy Carpe Diem. It would be fun reading about him from you!.

Thank you for the good news about Nissy. Happy to hear that he also had a bath and was so sweet about it. Am sure the broth is doing him a lot of good and a very good sign of improved health. May tomorrow bring us continued good news of his recovery.
Happy to know that the Dutchess is doing well and even has time to go swimming with her first Prince George. Hopefully, the little Princess will decidedly grace us with her Royal presence soon. It is well.

Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about a horse called –Intothefog? He was a great horse but died of cancer, His trainer was so heart broken that he never put another horse in his stall. May his soul rest in Peace.
Much love to all. It is always well at Z Nation where love abounds always.
maureen ph[llips
Oh no, the horse’s name isn’t intothefog but Lost in the Fog. His owner’s name was Harry j Aleo who passed away June 21st 2008. Sorry for the misinformation.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Maureen:
I remember Lost In The Fog. Really sad; he contracted Lymphoma in his fourth year. He won his Maiden race at Golden Gate and raced at Gulfstream, Churchill Downs and the NY circuit. He had 11 wins in 14 starts and 1 second. Beautiful boy. His sire, Lost Soldier, was a son of Danzig. He won the 2005 Eclipse Award Champion Sprinter.
Here is his Equibase Chart and an article in Blood Horse dated 9/19/2006. Love and Hugs, JB
