Dear Fans,
Today we celebrate what would have been our filly’s first birthday by remembering the joy that she brought to the world. We created a memorial page for Z Princess with a collection of images, videos and memories from those who loved her.
This page will always be here on Zenyatta.com in celebration of her life.
With love,
Team Z

A big thank you to all who share their wonderful experiences with the great horses that are being mentioned here. It’s wonderful that they are being remembered so that we won’t forget them. I’ve been a racing fan since I was a small girl who fell in love with horses. My first memory was from 1961 when Carry Back came from behind to win the Derby. As a busy adult (before the days on Internet) I lost touch with the Thoroughbred scene & have spent the last 3 yrs. catching up. I first went back to pedigree studing, then past races & now feel I’m pretty much caught up. My education was further enhansed by the discovery of Zenyatta.com. What a gift it has been. So, please, all, continue to post stories & rememberances of the horses.

Carry Back has one of my favorite backstories….his mommy was banned from racing because she would not leave the gate…and his daddy’s fee was very small…they were Saggy and Joppy

Saw my Dortmund get off the plane today. A sight to behold. Isn’t he beautiful.
But they all are so beautiful.

Dear Peggy,
Did you know the time he was arriving to have been there?, that sounds like a lot of awesome fun!. I agree with you, they are all so beautiful, never saw an ugly horse. You, my dear, have a beautiful spirit so see beauty in everything. A very admirable trait that I will try to emulate. Have a restful night. It is still well at Z Nation. Much love to all.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Maureen,
I just got to see him get off the plane on the Blood Horse Video. I sure wish I could have been there in person. I was though, actually in horse country, Ocala last week attending the sale. Sure would have liked to have been in Kentucky this week. But I love so too anyway to get to see them. Thanks so much to Judy and Bluegrass girl and all the others for the great video’s they send through. So hoping for a Triple Crown winner this year.

Peggy, Your big boy is indeed a very handsome guy. With that size he reminds me of my boy Muchie. Dortmond however does not look as rangy as MMM did at this time in his career.
Of course, this lot of Derby horses are some of the best looking ones I have seen in years. Dortmond, American Pharoah, Carpe Diem, Upstart just some of them. Lots of very impressive pedigrees also. I think this is a very talented crew and we will be talking of them for years to come.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Shirlee, I am so looking forward to this Derby. And, I am so hoping for an outside post for him. Will be saying prayers for this. I heard Bob Baffert say he would like post l4, but 20 would be OK. I so agree. He is such a Big Guy. I don’t usually like that far outside but in Dortmunds case I hope he gets the far outside. I worry about him making those turns at Pimlico too. But I so hope he does good. Hope they all come back safe and sound. I am counting the minutes till Saturday.
Peggy (N) South Georgia

Abigail_1849
Thank you so much Peggy & Celeste. One of the shocks for me was to see that both American Pharaoh + Carpe Diem have not particularly impressive maternal bloodlines re: mares. Although some nice stallions show up they don’t all have influence, given that further back they are handing down the “Y” to a son and not a daughter. So we have to assume that these two — together with Frosted — are far more influenced by their respective sire lines.

OOPs: should be “enjoying”. Sorry.
Deb E.
The Derby is coming up, and I’m torn between two horses: American Pharaoh and Dortmund. I think they both look good. Pharaoh is very exotic looking, isn’t he? He almost has an Egyptian look about him! And Dortmund is a very tall, sturdy and handsome chestnut. They both run like the wind and have prestigious wins in important races behind them going into Kentucky. I think I’ll flip a coin on which one I’ll root for! Hopefully next year, I won’t have such a hard time (fingers crossed that Zi will be there in 2016)!
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Debbie I love them both too. I don’t know if I am going to make it till Saturday. Soo nervous.
maureen ph[llips
Dear Deb E,
No need flipping a coin, short of a photo finish, there can only be one winner, just be happy with the outcome for there is really nothing you can do. For me, so long as they run their race to the best of their ability, its well.
Amen to hoping that Zi will win not just the Kentucky derby but the whole triple crown. Luckily, he is not as hot headed as first prince, my one and only Cozmic One whom I couldn’t love more even if I tried. Just a certified trouble maker.
Anyway my dear, don’t worry about who wins, just enjoy and be happy for who comes up on top. Hope there are no spoilers to sneak in there and take the race. Just saying, not to add to your anxiety. God alone knows who will win. If I get an inside track I’ll let you know; my point?, don’t worry, be happy. It is always well at Z Nation. Much love to all. Have a good nights rest.
shirleeinindy
Deb E, I too am in a quandary about the Derby. I like about 6 of them but cannot make up my mind.
AF is beautiful and the Zayat’s won a place in my heart after their care of Paynter-Favorites have won 2 straight years which goes against Derby lore and that 4.33 Dosage bothers me.
Dortmond as good looking as they come and can win from almost anywhere
Carpe Diem good looking boy and I like Stonestreet
International Star-lots of points, owned by the Ramsey who deserve a Derby win after all the years they have put into racing. Little guy and wonder if he can get the distance
Upstart-experienced, good pedigree and out of a Claiborne stallion
Materiality-Son of Afleet Alex- Not much experience
This might be one of those Owl Derbies. Afterwards we are all saying, “Who Who??”
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Shirley, Deb E and Z Fans:
I am undecided too. Shirlee, I love your post. Could very well be an “Owl Derby”. Have to say I agree with the horses you mentioned. Such a deeply talented field. I an partial to Dortmund, Carpe Diem and Materiality. Good post position and good racing luck will play a big part too, as always. Godspeed to all of them; safe and sound. Love and Hugs, JB

Thank you to Team Zenyatta and the Moss’ for sharing these gprgeopis pictures of the beautiful Z Princess. She was built so beautifully and powerful. Such a sad, sad loss. I’m pleased that we can visit the site and view her through the years. She touched so many hearts.
Nancy
Hi, Sorry for the typo in earlier note – the word was to be gorgeous, as she was.
maureen ph[llips
Dear Nancy,
Don’t worry about the correct spelling, it happens all the time even when you have reread your post, it manages to sneak in once in a while. Am happy to announce that I guessed the actual meaning correctly. You’re fine.
Yes she was too, too, cute with that falcon blaze and long long legs for days.I could see her with her mother’s long stride. We are happy to have had her even if it was very short. In the end, It is better to have loved and lost than not to have loved at all. She runs free now in meadows green, in Heaven, where she is rooting for her first Prince, Cozmic One and urging him to run like the wind.
Wouldn’t it be something special if the Queen has another Princess with Warfront?, magical would be the word and we would all be besides ourselves wouldn’t we?. If that were to happen in my culture, they would say that the Princess came back and put a special mark on her. Am not even lying.
Have you a restful night and God’s protection hoped for all the Derby youngsters/ contenders, may they all return home safe and sound with their jockey’s. Continued Prayers for the people of Nepal. It is well at Z Nation always. Much love to all.

Roberta
I was wondering if they have tried to get Zenyatta in foal; if she isn’t soon, that will be two years off. I remember reading that sometimes, when giving time off, it can be harder to get a mare in foal.
The other item I was wondering about, was, when are we going to get a update with video on Ziconic? It seems as though we haven’t had as many updates on him, as we did with Coz; of course, as with humans, the second baby never seems to have as much documentation as the first. Ziconic is my favorite’ he has always had so much presence about him, from day one. When most foals look sort of skinny, and all legs, when first born, Ziconic was so muscular. I always loved that video of him running with mom, side by side until out of sight, and he was only about 3 weeks old. With Zenyatta as his mom, and Tapit as his dad, could he be our next Triple Crown winner? I remember how a lot of us, stated that he looked like a little Secretariat. At Lane’s End, they were saying that he loved his workouts as a yearling; even mentioning him moving his legs, when he was asleep, like running in the Kentucky Derby. They said he was special, and a joy to be around; I would like to see if those traits are continuing. It also was his birthday too, as he was born on his mom’s birthday, but we never saw any celebration of it, was there one? Just a few things I was wondering about.
Just some information about the site that Colin has on the Ancestry of the Thoroughbred; it is beautifully written, and starts from the foundation stallions, follows the different bloodlines, with the different horses that carried/carries those bloodlines. You can look-up certain horses and read about them. He loves Zenyatta, and you can read about her under Kris S. I just finished reading about Sunday Silence, and all the struggles he went through for both his life, and for respect. It brought tears to my eyes. He does this extensive work out of love for the horse. I have it on my taskbar; there is a place to post, and if you have a question, he will get back to you via email. Check it out. Sorry this was so long; I don’t post much, but when I do, I guess I bring up everything at once. Sorry!!
lauraj_cincinnati
FYI–Colin was a horse; it’s not the name of the site owners/authors. He’s worth reading about:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_%28horse%29
Deb E.
When I saw the first pictures of Ziconic after he was born I believe I screamed, “He’s back!”, which is a terrible burden to put on an hours-old baby. But Zi is a throwback, I believe, and you can throw him all the way back to his 3-times great-granddaddy, the immortal Secretariat whom he resembles more than a little. In the movie Silver Linings Playbook, one of the recurring themes is the “ju-ju” or omens that Pat’s dad (Robert DeNiro) believes in regarding his beloved Philadelphia Eagles and the ju-ju the team needs surrounding it to win. Ziconic has some POWERFUL ju-ju: he was born on his mother’s birthday (no slouch on the race track she), AND he was born in the 40th anniversary year of Secretariat’s Triple Crown triumph. So if you believe in signs, omens, superstition, or the ju-ju, Zi has got plenty of good will and hope surrounding him.

Dear Mary Margaret in Georgia,
Hope you are having an awesomely Blessed day. Re your post and not sure who to go with, I thought I’d help you some. Go with Dortmund, he shares your Birthday. Aquarian’s are hard workers and smart. I’d bet on him if I were you. Just saying. You can’t go wrong. Oh Well, it is okay if any of your choices win, its a win win. Like I say, lets hope there are no spoilers out there to take the race.
No matter what, a Safe trip is wished rider and horse, all of them, no injuries, just a safe ride. It is well. Much love to all. Good luck with all your horses. Luckily I’LL be happy with any of the horses winning. They are all good horses and I love all their cute name’s so am cheering them all on , Win or loose, we will still love them. Maybe loose some money but that’s part of the game. Again, Blessings are wished everyone of my Z Nation family.
