Win A One-of-A-Kind Artist Proof of Zenyatta in an Instagram Contest!
In order to thank Zenyatta enthusiasts for their outpouring of response for the American Thoroughbred photography project, artist Neil Latham is offering the Artist Proof of Zenyatta’s portrait to one lucky person in an Instagram contest. This one-of-a-kind print was used in the editing process for his coffee table book, and has hand-written notes from the artist on the back. “It’s a very special piece,” says Latham.
In order to win the 5×7-inch, archival quality, chromogenic print, contest participants must go to Latham’s Instagram page, @neil_american_thoroughbred and open the Zenyatta portrait offered in the contest, pictured above.
Three actions to enter this contest:
1. Follow @neil_american_thoroughbred
2. Like the photo associated with this contest
3. Comment on the photo and tag two friends in your comment
There is just one week to take these actions – the contest winner will be selected on Monday, August 8.

A Stand-Out Among Hundreds
It was actually this small work print of Zenyatta that convinced Jack Woody, owner of Twin Palms, to publish the American Thoroughbred book. His company publishes books by prestigious photographers such as Walker Evans, Duane Michals, Bruce Weber and Herb Ritts. When Woody agreed to fly to New York from his Santa Fe headquarters to review the photography collection, Latham narrowed his 6,000-plus images down to about 400, produced 5×7-inch prints of them all and posted them across his studio wall to review.
“As he walked into my studio, the first photograph he locked eyeballs onto was Zenyatta,” says Latham. “She was in a sea of hundreds of images, yet the shot pulled him in. It only took a few seconds from when he walked into the room before the magic moment happened. He remarked that it was iconic. And the thing was, he didn’t know anything about Zenyatta. He zoomed in on her portrait not because of her fame, but because of the language of the photograph, the architecture of positive and negative spaces. Her racing legacy adds another layer to the image.”
When Woody perused the entire collection, he decided to take on the book, remarking that it is an interesting and unusual approach to portraying horses. When he saw the large 50×60-inch prints, he was captivated by the grandeur and quality, explains Latham.
Work Prints Reveal Process
As the artist and publisher debated about the final 80 selections for the book, they laid the small work prints on the floor and moved them around like squares on a quilt. They agreed on about 70 percent of the photographs and negotiated the rest, with the understanding that the Zenyatta portrait would be a lead image, explains Latham. They wrote notes on the back of the prints, and they were re-ordered many times until the book page plan was finalized.
“The photo editing process was very difficult, but I was lucky to have Jack Woody to work with – he has a discerning eye,” says Latham. He adds that these artist proofs, which will not be sold, are the heart of the project, as they were consulted throughout production, and shipped back and forth until the project was completed. “There is only one of each used throughout the design, editing and layout of the book, so they are very special,” he says.
Print To Go To An Enthusiast
Although Latham hates to break up the full set of 80 Artist Proofs used for the book, he says he believes this print should belong to one of Zenyatta’s enthusiasts. “I don’t get to hear feedback on my work, so I was really touched by the comments on Zenyatta’s blog, and wanted to give something back to those people who love her,” says Latham.
“As a photographer, I want my work to mean something to people, and it feels like my mission has been accomplished. It makes my heart feel full to think of someone equally passionate owning this print,” he says.
Latham hopes that as many people as possible will participate in the Instagram contest for a bit of fun and competition in Zenyatta’s name. Pass it on!

Dear Sheena,
Thank you for our Hovis. What a lovely tribute to Hannah Francis. I wondered if Mum removing that shoe was a bad idea. Hopefully CNSM can set everything right! And yes, no selfies of them snogging! Hope Hovis gets more food. He needs to maintain his manly physique! TGIF, everyone. Safe trips for all horses and jockeys running this weekend.

August 5 Cherokee Devotional
Emerson must have been speaking of this season of the year when he wrote, “The earth laughs in flowers.” Delicate wild petunias-lilac in color-and white mallow have begun to bloom where it seemed nothing could grow. The heat of summer brings out sunflowers and pink verbena. Hay meadows have been cleared of grasses and bales, but wildflowers continue to bloom profusely. Black-eyes Susans fill the fields and purple ironweed nods its heavy head. Enjoy every flower because it was put here for a reason. Likewise, we were not put here by accident: we were put here to laugh with the earth. Please join the laughter!
What does it matter what I pray as long as my prayers are answered?

Dear Kathy. If only people laughed more.I know I post a lot of sad news but it’s the real world. It doesn’t mean I don’t laugh though.Poor Hovis an anorexic TB!I had a workman fixing my bathroom window this morning great difficulty in shutting it but all well now.I was rudely awoken by my upstairs neighbour hoovering. An Autumnal mist on the Dyfi this morning Glesni will be thinking Africa??.Much better weather today though sunny and warmish!W8 the male was eating on the nest just now(Glaslyn) no news of the female yet today.A fascinating story from Roy Dennis who was instrumental in re-introducing Ospreys back to the UK Green j a bird he put a transmitter on in 1991 is still alive and well albeit in a new nest. She was ousted out of her old home by a younger stronger female last year and just wondered around for a while before returning to Spain(not Africa) Roy thought she had died but a friend of his saw her last winter at one of her old haunts and another associate phoned back in april saying she was nesting on his estate with a new young mate! Some of her chicks have been translocated to the Basque country and Andulascia.Maybe they live longer by not wintering in Africa.
Larry has over 90000 followers and announced George Osborne is to be made a companion of honour.Palmerston has reached 30000 too.Lovely videos of Ray and Jack O.I am waiting for more news of the conbenshun!Ty-Nant have raised well over £16000 now they have ordered steel doors now. They just want to know what has happened to the missing cats.A sad affair. No more news from “Prince Harry” well he is busy in Africa!!Andy Murray is the flag bearer for the UK tonight.Have a great Friday.Love and hugs to you, kisses for Angel Holly, Nikko and Sugar.SheenaXOXO
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
Not sure what Hovis’mum thinks he should weigh. He is a big boy, after all…Glad your window is working properly now. I don’t think people should be allowed to hoover until a civilized hour! I’m glad the weather is nice as the ospreys near their departures. Wow, I had no idea ospreys lived so long. That’s truly amazing. I guess Spain is the place to go! Congratulations to Larry Goerge and Palmerston! I love the Ray videos. Fibbs’ conbenshun is sure to be memorable. I wonder how they got the spacepod operating again! That’s very sensible to install steel doors at Ty-Nant. We’ll have to stay tuned for news from “Prince Harry.” Looking forward to opening ceremonies in Rio. Will keep an eye open for Andy. TGIF! Love and hugs from me, kisses from Angel Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy XOXO

I will never be able to catch up on all things Zenyatta that I have missed. When I am really feeling poorly I think of her and it helps get me through a very sad and difficult time. A dose of redneck jokes from Terry would help, too. If you haven’t had a shingles shot please get one. My youngest brother has come down with it on one side of his face and head. Ghastly and so painful for him. Thank heavens I am back home so I can watch the racing. I felt disappointed for Richard Mandella and Mr. Hughes. Love racing at Saratoga.
