Dear Zenyatta and Team Z:
I was very sorry to read of the passing of Steve Willard, Zenyatta’s exercise rider. I had the pleasure of meeting Steve when I visited John Shirreff’s Barn 55 back in 2011. Steve was so nice and had such a great sense of humor.
My deepest condolences to Steve’s family and friends.
Well, our Zenny’s precious son was a great success reminding those who watched him race of his glorious mom. He really got the hang of it and loved it so the best is yet to come. We’re still rooting for big brother, too. Congrats to all involved. So sorry to hear of Willard’s passing. I so enjoyed some of his comments about Zenny telling it like it was. He loved her.
I have watched Saturday’s race about a dozen times and loved every minute of it.
Zirconic reminded me of his mom – sitting in the back and then making that big run. Love those closers. His connections have a right to be very proud of him.
California Chrome’s prep race attracts nine others at early entry stage
By: Kellie Reilly Twinspires on February 22, 2016
California Chrome could face nine rivals in his Thursday prep race at Meydan, contested over the same about 1 1/4-mile distance as the March 26 Dubai World Cup (G1). A few are cross-entered to other spots on the card, and final declarations (along with jockeys, post positions, and the scheduled post time) won’t be announced until Tuesday.
As expected, California Chrome is far and away the top horse on official ratings (121), and he’ll be spotting 15 pounds all around as the 132-pound highweight with regular rider Victor Espinoza.
Recall that Hall of Famer Curlin did the same eight years ago in his World Cup prep as well, where he gave his handicap foes 15 pounds and a drubbing.
His nearest competitors are the 105-rated pair of Storm Belt and Think Ahead. – See more at: http://www.twinspires.com/blog/2016/2/22/california-chrome%E2%80%99s-prep-race-attracts-nine-others-early-entry-stage

Santa Anita to replace turf course
ESPN Horse Racing Steve Andersen | Daily Racing Form Feb. 22 2016
ARCADIA, Calif. — Santa Anita will replace its turf course with a Bermuda grass surface this summer in advance of an autumn meeting highlighted by the Breeders’ Cup races on Nov. 4-5, track senior vice president Joe Morris said on Sunday.
The transition is scheduled to begin in July following the conclusion of the spring-summer meeting July 10. The track’s autumn meeting starts Sept. 29. http://espn.go.com/horse-racing/story/_/id/14823828/santa-anita-replace-turf-course-summer
I just watched the race video again and I noticed that as Zi is in the stretch, he looks over at the crowd which must have been going nuts yelling. I wonder if he had held his focus and not had that teeny distraction if we might not be talking about a win. He’s still a baby: he’ll learn. After all, he’s still 2 for another month and a half although technically on Jan. 1 he was lumped in with the 3 year-olds.
I thought that too when I saw him looking at the crowd but then again, he’ll have to get used to all that screaming and yelling whenever he races… Zenyatta’s fans will always be out there cheering on her baby boy!
Wise Dan consistently glanced at the stands on the way to the line. That did not make a difference. He still won and set records. Ziconic looked at the fans, but he kept on going and did not slow down. It appeared instead that he just ran out of real estate. Next time.
Like Dan, ZI looks right at the camera too when he sees it. I think Z taught both of her boys how to pose. Love and Hugs, JB

Indeed. Ziconic also has a 100% chestnut cashmere coat. That tail? It’s gotta be a combination of linen and silk like Dan. Ziconic might have finished third in that race, just to see how it felt.

Coz in races you keep your tail like mom Zenny, Zi in race when you glidely slowed after finish, two of your three white legs look like white hind legs of mom Zenny, Coz in fb photo, where you are near left fence white horse in middle and Zi wide, your eyes look tired, i think this is because of 7 furlong, Coz sleep in deep soft straw have good long rest between travels, say to Zi and stable mates too, warm weather at you, Zi how you feel all four your legs back and neck after race, there was long free space in front of your nose all race, well, i was afraid about not light control in crowd of horses, course was muddy more safe for legs of horses, well, slowing after finish was on wide space and was glide, well, Zi from my hill of view 7 furlong is long for your growing legs, Zi breeze carefully, not often, choose sloppy course safe for legs, Coz and Zi i continue to think that you are foals of Zenny
for horses, only if they, when come on course, always lil remember that, to bump, to change lead legs often, to make quick lil turns on full gallop speed, not glidely to increase and to decrease speed, to breeze on full gallop speed with not full healthy legs, to breeze near left fence with right whip and with no free space in front of nose of horse, to keep lil not safe distance to forward hind horse and to left and to right horse, to breeze in hot weather,, on dry hard course,, is not safe for legs and health of horse, google ” youtube Zenyatta’s country dance fun song ” , Coz and Zi sleep in deep soft straw, slowly drink clean not cold water, eat green light hay apples, lil lower amount of oats some days after breeze, pears sweet potato carrot juice, walk on air with groom, have bath, care of back neck legs hooves health, beautyfull Zenny do all quietly and not quickly, if weather is good walk on air with mates, if weather is cold, walk not all day, wear winter coat, warm in stall, eat green light hay apples, care of your health, beautyfull Zenny Zi Coz and mates stay comfy and cozy, eat apples, care of health, kiss your soft noses, lil 14z filly To Dubai im remembering you

I saw him in person. He looked great! Not as big as mom was but he was VERY personable!!! Looking around at the crowd on the waking ring!!! it was exciting to hear the cheers for him at the finish line. Sorry to hear about Zenyatta’s rider Steve Willard. May he RIP.
WHAT A RACE !!!!!!! It was truly one of the most exciting and meaningful I have EVER seen !!!
I watched it live on calracing .com–had trouble getting into the site, but finally made it 7 minutes before the race. From the moment I caught sight of Zi walking towards the gate, I had tears streaming down my face and,as he broke from the gate, I was talking to him all of the way. When he started moving down the stretch, I was screaming and sobbing–I think I scared all of my cats to death !! It took me quite awhile to stop crying. Then, as I talked to our darling Sandy from Ohio and then Dawn Conrad, I was at it again !!
He ran like the champ I have believed he was going to be ever since the first time I saw the photo of him trotting alongside his mother under the springtime trees. That was the first photo I ever bought from the Z shop and I LOVE it !!After what I saw on Saturday, I believe he is going to fulfill every prediction I have made about him !!
I am SO happy for the whole Z team–wish I could have been “a fly on the wall” at the dinner celebration they must have had that night !! I loved Gary’s remark about now knowing what it would have been like to ride Zenyatta !! Mike must have been overjoyed at having Gary do such a great job in his place. If HE couldn’t ride that day, how great that his dear friend could do it in his stead.
Can hardly wait to see and talk to Karen Taylor if she comes into our store this week. She will be over the moon at what her beloved Slew’s great——-grandson did !! Aren’t we all going to have fun and thrills over the coming months??? Wow !!
I may come down off of the ceiling one of these days, but, right now, it’s all I can think of and talk about. It’s been a real joy today, reading about everyone else’s joy and excitement.
Again, my heartiest congratulations to everyone who has had a hand in preparing this
glorious colt for the journey of a lifetime. Look out world—-HE’S HERE !!!
Hoping all the best for Ziconic. May your star shine as bright as your gorgeous chestnut coat. Stay safe always.
Found a nicely written blog article which was a tribute to a mare that raced and never made her mark as a broodmare, but meant everything to her owner.
Dear Janet N.,
Thank you so much for posting this link. It brought tears to my eyes and is beautifully written. I am so glad that Feel the Beat was brought home to live out her days being loved and cared for by people who valued her life and appreciated her. What a lovely tribute to a lovely soul. Kudos and condolences to her owner and Penland Farms.
Dear Marshall.I read about Feel the Beat on one of our FB’s yesterday.Great to hear she was so happy and loved in her golden years and not tossed aside like so many.RIP Feel The Beat.Love and hugs Sheena
What a heartwarming and uplifting story. Does my heart good to know there are people like this in the Industry who love and care for their horses for their lifetimes. Love her name too, Feel The Beat. Rest In Peace beauty.
Ziconic turned it on at the stretch, flattened out like the racehorse he is, dug in and ate up the track. It was thrilling to watch! What a promising future he has and I hope he maintains his focus through the two turns in his next race! Congratulations to his jockey, trainer, grooms, and owners.
Dear Janet
Thank-you so much for the lovely article on Feel the Beat and how her family brought her home and lovingly take care of their own. In a time when so many of these beautiful horses die far too young,it is heartwarming to see this ode to her and final tribute. She finished her life with 11 good years with the people who knew and loved her,was turned out with her girlfriends every day,and knew love and appreciation for her hard work and spirit. We may not have heard of her,but yes,she was truly great to those who knew her and for the legacy she leaves behind. At 31, she is buried at the home of her birth, with her girlfriends who went before her,and remembered and honoured for a life well lived.
I am in tears, it is so good to hear of some tenderness and respect for a lovely lady who gave it her all and was given peaceful ,happy days as her just reward.
Congratulations to Ziconic, what a race!! Shades of momma.Beautiful boy. In the best of hands with Mario.
Saw an amazing photo of you Coz working hard with Alex Solis on board, you looked so focused and muscled and gorgeous.
Deep condolences to Steve Willard’s family, without this great man Zenyatta’s story could have been very different. RIP Steve.
Speak to me of quiet places, of treasures yet to be found, of peace that flows like a river. Tell me of tranquil places that no hand has marred, no storm has scarred. Give me visions of standing in sunlight or feeling spring mist against my cheek. Show me paths that wind through the wild lilies and beds of buttercups. Sing me the songs of the spheres, the mingled voices of wrens and meadowlarks, the lowing of gentle cows and the whinny of the mare talking to her colt. Lead me past the glass-smooth pond where frogs croak of their graduation from frisky tadpoles to squat green frogs that wait patiently for a flying insect. Find me a place in the sun to sit and think and listen to the sweet inner-voice that says so quietly-peace be still.
The earth has always been talking to us, but many of us have lost our sensitivities to sound and vibration, so we do not hear her.
-Joseph Rael, Ute

RIP Steve.

February 23 Cherokee Devotional

Dear Kathy,
Beautiful devotional… most people don’t take time just to be in silence and hear, smell, and see the sounds of the earth and all of the creatures. It is really the most beautiful ‘song’. I think the enemy is noise and distraction. Just loved what you posted. with love, Elizabeth
PS Praying for your appointment to go well today, and that you’re healing.
