Happy Monday!
Zenyatta’s colts are now both at Belmont Park with John Shirreffs.
Ziconic recently graduated from training at Mayberry Farm, where he was galloping every day and picking up speed. He arrived at Belmont over the weekend, joining his older brother Coz. Dottie tells us that Ziconic has a wonderful attitude about training and is one happy horse!
We’ll be visiting the boys this week. Updates to come!

Just saw on TVG that Justin Zayat posted AP going to Ashford but he will continue to race his 3 yr. old career win or lose the Belmont. Hope that is what happens. Racing needs its stars to continue racing. So tired of all the rain we are having. My blueberry crop can certainly use the rain but I’m losing a lot of berries because of the HARD rain. A huge limb on one of our pear trees broke right off during the night. Overnight the grass is knee high. Four acres is a lot to take care of but when I look out my windows I wouldn’t trade the view for anything.

Goodnight. Happy Dreams. Love You. Hugs, JB
Z Princess, Dubai, will always love you.

As far as Coz and Ziconic go, they could not be in better hands. John is not only a trainer, he is a horseman. You might be a redneck if you have to fill your toilet with water so you can use it. You might be a redneck if you played banjo in your high school band. You may be a redneck if you have ever stolen a “neighborhood watch” sign. You might be a redneck if you think farm is spelled e-i-e-i-o.
Marty R / Colorado
Dear Terry,
I Absolutely agree with you about John Shirreffs. I also hear him called a “conditioner” quite often.
Yes sireeeee…..farm, e-i-e-i-o!!

Thanks for the laugh, Terry! :-)

Wish Coz was ready for the Belmont & clean AP’s clock!
Glad Ziconic is there now with John. He appears to be such a compact package, maybe will be ready sooner for that fact.

I do not want to start any rumors…that is why I am checking it out with you folks. So I have no idea if this is true or not. On one of the Facebook postings about American Pharoah’s breeding rights being sold, a lady stated that Vertigineux had died of colic some months back in time. Did I miss something? Is this true? I cant find any data to support this statement. Thank you for any information.
carol in arkansas
As far asi heard….nothing to support this…
PLEASE…..say it isnt so
Peggy (N) South Georgia
So hope this isn’t true.
Pati-CSU Gal
I am working diligently to find information about this too. I also saw that post and I am going to email Coolmore to see if they answer my question. It’s either true and Coolmore has been silent about it to protect their farm and staff OR it is a vicious rumor started by someone who just wants to tar the name of Coolmore because she was denied a farm visit or something equally petty. I’ll let you guys know if I find anything.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
There’s been no death certificate filed with The Jockey Club.
It’s probably just a rumor–someone was thinking of some other horse, maybe. You know how these things get distorted.
judy Berube from Rhode Island
Dear Laura J and Z Fans:
Laura J, thanks for this encouraging comment. Praying it’s a rumor.
I have been trying unsuccessfully to find info on Vertigineux and if she has had her Tapit foal this Spring. Coolmore does not make information readily available. Does anyone know? Love and Hugs, JB
lauraj_cincinnati
Equineline does not report a 2015 foal for her, but a birth does not have to be reported immediately.

Dear Laura J:
Thanks; that’s true. Will keep checking. Love and Hugs, JB

Imagine my surprise when I went to check the blog to see about any news of our beloved Zenyatta being in foal and I saw this!!! This put the biggest smile on my face to know that her two boys are together and with John!!! They are absolutely in the best hands!!! Can’t wait to see more pictures and keep up with their progress!!! Thank you once again Team Z for sharing them with us!!! Now we’re just waiting to hear if we have a new foal on the way!!! Fingers and hooves crossed!!!
Deb E.
Bloodhorse.com has an article up about the boys being together at Belmont, mostly repeating the information we read first. The comments section following the article is the must read, though. It’ll either make your blood boil in defense of poor Coz or have a giggle or two. Many comments reference Z Princess and what could have been which is sad. Here’s the link:

Ingrid Arnone
Dear Deb,
Thanks for the link.

Deb E
You are right. Some of the comments are rather unkind. I am no expert but think that getting all crazy about what Coz is going to be after just one race is a bit premature.
Don’t know why people are so unkind about Coz and Rachel’s filly. Both are beautiful and who knows what the future will hold for either of them??
Deb E.
I’ve been wondering if Coz would do better running on grass rather than dirt. He might like it better. He seems to have developed a bad rep among those wags who say they have inside information on cetrain horses from a “friend of a friend of a friend” who works at different stables. Everyone who posted comments on Coz almost all referenced his bad temperament, tendency to bite, and say most Bernardini offspring are fractious and hard to train. You know what? Two greats of horse racing: Man ‘O War and Seabiscuit were fractious late bloomers who turned out to be pretty great racers (THAT’S an understatement!). As for Rachel’s filly, to read the comments you’d think she’s grossly deformed! Too short front legs indeed!
judy Berube from Rhode Island
Dear Shirlee, Deb E and Z Fans:
Deb what you say about horses with fractious temperaments being great racers is so true, but I have to say, I have read just the opposite about Bernie’s temperament; that he is laid back and easy to handle. I just love him and was thrilled when Z was bred to him.
As far as COZ’s racing success, I do feel it is way too soon to judge him. JS will continue to work with him and we’ll see. I think he has great potential. All of Z’s babies are different and beautiful. We will find out soon enough how COZ and ZI go and sadly, we’ll never know what our beloved Z Princess could have accomplished; but win or lose, we love all of Z’s babies. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Z Fans:
This piece is by Lenny Shulman from February 2011. He too loved AP Indy and his son, Bernie. Steve Haskin and LS spent some time with Bernie and his trainer, Tom Albertrani, and LS gives us an insight into Bernie’s personality as a three year old in this article. Love and Hugs, JB

I always wondered why Zenyatta was not tried on the turf.
shirleeinindy
Judy,
Thanks for the post about Bernardini. Doesn’t sound like he was a mean or hard to handle horse. Sounds like he was a real sweetheart. Most colts have some P and Vinegar in them and can be a handful at times.
judy Berube from Rhode Island
Dear Shirlee:
You’re so welcome. That’s so true; most colts are fiesty; even the fillies can be. Love and Hugs, JB
judy Berube from Rhode Island
Oops. Should be “feisty”.
Sue Noel in Sun Valley,ID
This is such exciting news for me that I can hardly explain it. Since the moment I laid eyes on this colt,I’ve had a feeling about him. I know I’ve written before that I feel he is next year’s Triple Crown and Breeder’s Cup Classic winner–and–Horse of the year. There is something magic about him and the confidence he exudes. I believe he KNOWS what he is capable of and is just waiting for his chance to do what he already knows he CAN. I always picture him thinking to himself–“everybody just chill. I’ve got this!”
I don’t think anyone means to write Coz off–I surely don’t—-I LOVE him,as we all do. They are just two different horses, with two different levels of maturity and two different paths to their full potential. Coz is taking a little longer to grow into himself and needs the time and space to do it. With John’s wonderful patience,we know he will John will have an interesting time handling both of the boys and I’m sure it will be a very challenging and exciting time for him. The boys are in wonderful hands and we are all in for some thrilling experiences following them.
May they stay safe and happy and loving their work. Zenny, know you’ll always be proud of these two!! And I know you’re happy that they are with your John.
Terry Crow
Agree, Sue. One race does not a career make. Even our current favorite for the triple crown lost his first race.

Dear Judy, Blue Grass Girl, Max, Sheena, Carol. or anyone that might know.
If anyone see’s the listing of the lineup for the Japanese Oaksfor this Sunday please post it over here. Know Let’s Go Donki will be there unless something happened. Really wondering if Ginger Punch’s daughter will be there. Rouge Buck. Just loved Ginger Punch. Always remember Bobby Frankel when thinking of her. Believe he loved her dearly. Should be a strong North American Influence in this race. Have to pull for Let’s Go Donki, but sure hope Rouge Buck and Cat Coin do well if they show up. Good Luck to all in the Race. God Speed.

Cant find a line up….but supposedly 21 are nominated…including Rouge Buck…found an article but only profiles 4 of them….
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Carol and Judy, Thank you both so much. I looked through all the names. My favorites are there. Will check back in a day or so for the lineup.

May 21 Cherokee Devotional
Spread a blanket on the grass and lie down to watch the sky change from one phase to another with light and color. Watch the subtle shading as the sun moves higher and higher. Watch the clouds scoot across in the invisible paths of the wind. Notice the heights the redtail hawk and the condor will reach and how they ride the currents with no apparent effort.
The sky in all its glory-sunsets and sunrises, moons, storm clouds, sunshine, rainfall and snow. They all come from a Source we do not see-but the evidence, the influence is clearly there. So why do we question our Source in all His provision?
The signs of the dawn are seen in the east and the breath of the new life is here.

Dear Sheena,
Monty is such a good Papa! I did see that video of the cat and the rat. VERY unusual! Could turn out badly for the rat if the cat ever gets ticked off! I agree that Sarah has a real talent for making a bunch of rats look cute and appealing! lol Yes, this is Therapy Thursday for little Zoe. She and her mama are so worried about Mr. Giz. I’m praying for him too! I hope they post prom pics of Abby and Shortie, too!. Tutu cute! lol Poor Loki. I don’t imagine he’ll ever get used to the air blowing in his face. Yes, today’s the big day for my aunt. My cousin will need extra strength! I told her I would prepare and bring over some beef and noodles tomorrow, my day off. That’s cool you mom was able to celebrate her birthday on the longest day. Extra daylight! Enjoy the races! You have a wonderful day, too. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. 75 years ago over 338,000 troops were rescued from the beaches of Dunkirk in operation Dynamo,a stunning great escape that helped Great Britain avoid defeat in the second World War.Today some of the famous “little ships” will cross the English Channel to re-enact the incredible evacuation. As well as British forces a total of 140,000French,Polish and Belgian troops were rescued. There were many acts of heroism and sadly atrocities but we survived due the “Dunkirk Spirit” and the little ships. We shall never surrender!!!RIP Sheena.

Good to see both of Zenny’s boys together. They couldn’t be in better hands, John always takes good care of his horses. Good to see that AP is going to keep racing win or loose.

Dear Judy,I loved the piece by Lenny Shulman spending time with Bernadini at the barn as a three year old.His comments give real examples of how Bernadini reacted to him and what his personality is like-they had a lovely connection.
Love Coz and Ziconic, happy they are together with John as their trainer.

Like so many other comments, I too am here to say how good it is to read that Coz and Ziconic are in the same place with John Sheriffs to look after and teach them.
Also, remember Nicanor, Lentenor and Margano. Personally, I think if they had been allowed to be their own horse rather than a clone of Barbaro they would all have had much better records. Time will tell how Pennmarydel does. I see that he has been working out of late and to see him run in the near future. I’m sure Coz and Ziconic will let John know how they want to do things soon enough and they can make the naysayers eat their words.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
Why do you think that Nicanor, Lentenor, and Margano have/were not allowed to be themselves? Maybe the fans were hoping for Barbaro 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0, but I see no evidence that their trainers were forcing them to be something that they were not. (Margano is still in training, I think.)
Max
Need a laugh? For all those who love talking horses, this is a behind the scenes look at the stars of the Direct TV commercials. The horse is cheeky like Mr. Ed, has an NZ accent and looks like Tapit.
JudyB. It’s been said that Hannah is Derek Jeter’s girlfriend. Don’t know.
I love the horse.

Dear Judy,
Thanks for posting that lovely article by Lenny Schulman about AP Indy
and Bernie. I remember the Video that Darley put out when Zenny was
going to have her first date with Bernie and how Jimmie Bell described
Bernie as very cool calm and collected. And how Bernie came prancing
out of the stallion barn at Darley for his showing in the video he looked gorgeous
and muscular. CoZ is going to be slow to mature and I remember one
great gelding that was slow to mature, John Henry, and he won the Arlington
Million at 9 years of age. Go CoZ !!!!!
