Happy Friday!
It’s the time of year when kids go back to school and Ziconic is no exception. This week, he was among a group of yearlings that left Lane’s End to begin their training in Ocala, FL.
Ziconic has settled in at Mayberry Farm, where he’ll soon learn basics like how to carry a rider. We hear from Jeanne that he’s in Coz’s old stall at the end of the row, and he’s even made friends with Daisy the cat.
Last year we introduced you to Jeanne, April, and Jackie from Mayberry Farm and shared quite a bit about Coz’s early training. If you missed it and would like to read more before our next Ziconic update, start here and here.
Scroll down for more photos and a video of Ziconic’s departure from Lane’s End.
Enjoy!

Jockey Rajiv Maragh has surgery on broken arm
AP – Sports Sunday Sept. 28 2014
NEW YORK (AP) — Jockey Rajiv Maragh has had surgery to repair a broken right arm sustained when he was unseated from his mount Wicked Strong in the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Club at Belmont Park.
Maragh’s agent, Tony Micallef, says the jockey had surgery Sunday to install plates and screws in his arm. Micallef says he doesn’t know how long the rider will be sidelined.

Espinoza suspended seven days for Awesome Again ride
By Steve Andersen Daily Racing Form 09/28/2014 5:07PM
ARCADIA, Calif. – Jockey Victor Espinoza was suspended seven days by Santa Anita stewards Sunday for causing interference aboard Sky Kingdom in Saturday’s Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes.
Espinoza was sanctioned for allowing Sky Kingdom to drift wide on the first turn, carrying the 1-5 favorite Shared Belief four wide. The incident was the subject of widespread discussion after the race, which was won by Shared Belief.
Stewards Scott Chaney, Kim Sawyer, and Tom Ward issued a suspension Sunday, citing Espinoza for violation of two rules – jockeys riding “carelessly, or willfully, so as to permit their mount to interfere with or impede any other horse” and a rule pertaining to unsatisfactory rides.
Brian Beach, Espinoza’s agent, said Sunday afternoon that Espinoza may appeal the decision and that the rider would seek legal advice in the next few days.

Glad that Victor was suspended-that cannot be tolerated.
The rider for Moreno-Junior …- created a hazard as well and had no regard for his mount,Wicked Strong or Rajiv.Rajiv has screws and a plate in his arm,Wicked Strong escaped injury through a miracle. Think of the other horses and riders that could have been hurt too!!
I want stricter enforcement of rules and better rules if they need them.
Dear Barbara
On a happy note ,the ride of the wee girl barrel racing on her pony was fantastic.I can’t believe a litte gal can ride so well and the pony is all heart and sooo speedy. I am still smiling,thank-you!

In the heat of the moment, things can happen. Rajiv himself was suspended for 7 days for careless riding in the Belmont Stakes in 2011. Uncle Johnny thought at the time that Maragh’s riding had cost Animal Kingdom a win in that race.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
He took MMM out of that race too. Luckily there were no serious injuries to horses or riders. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
Whenever I hear that guy’s name, I think of that race, and what might have been. Ramon Dominguez was riding MMM on that day. Ritvo and the owners had removed Rajiv from the mount as I recall. He was riding another horse, who finished well back. At least Stay Thirsty and Javier got a second. Good result for Bernie.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Yes, RM was replaced on Muchie by Ramon D. It was determined that RM deliberately slammed into Muchie who then bumped into Animal Kingdom, taking both of them out of any chance in the race. So lucky no one was severely injured; horses or riders. Was a good result for Stay Thirsty and Bernie, though.
The winner of the 2011 Belmont was Ruler On Ice; he paid $51.50 to win and went on to earn $1M+ in his career. He never won another Grade I race. He last raced in May of this year. He’s been retired to owner’s, George and Lori Hill’s, farm in Versailles, KY. He’s a beautiful Chestnut Gelding. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Shirlee:
Yes, JS will let COZ tell him when he’s ready. The thing is, JS and the Moss’ will probably want to see if COZ might be ready for a race in the Fall and then, depending on how he goes, determine if he is ready to compete in a Derby Prep. It would be good if COZ can get a Maiden win in at two before the serious Derby Prep races begin in February 2015. Some of the two year old horses in his Crop will be going in the BC Juvenile. JS will not push him and if he’s ready to go soon, let the adventure begin. Godspeed COZ; safe and sound always. Love and Hugs, JB

Excuses rob us. If an idea is a good idea, it deserves a second look. If the need for a quick profit is more important than long-term success, then an idea that costs money and takes time to develop is probably not a good idea. The world doesn’t want to wait. The fast dollar, the quick thrill, the big wind. It all falls down. The best idea of all is that if we want to do something and do it well, we shouldn’t let the world know. We should keep our di ni s go li (heads) down, the a ho li (mouth) shut, and everything else in high gear. Where we put our faith makes all the difference.
I looked for the benefits, which would last forever, and my face shines with joy…

Dear Sheena,
Yes, Marty has the right idea to just hide on Mondays and not participate. That dog was so cute. His dad just needed to leave him alone. So glad the other furbabies are doing well. Steve got home on Friday and was able to rest over the weekend. Back to the grind today. I know what you mean about Boo’s popularity. His numbers are just astounding.
