Zenyatta has always been one for special occasions. In true form, she foaled just before midnight on her 9th birthday, after a day of celebration.
She delivered a healthy colt by Tapit at 11:47 pm EST on Monday April 1. Estimated at 145 lbs, he is a leggy chestnut with a white blaze similar to Zenyatta’s. Eager to start his new life, he was standing on his own by 12:18 am and nursing within an hour.
Both are doing so very well, and it’s a joy to see how much Zenyatta loves being a mom.
Thank you to all of the fans who have been following The Queen and sending good wishes and blessings. It worked!
We can’t wait to spend the day with little 13Z tomorrow, and there will be many more pictures to come!

What a beautiful foal. Congratulations Zenyatta and family!

Hard to say what color he will be without an up close and personal look, but if you look at the area around his tear duct, if he were going to turn gray, it would be black instead of the pinkish orangy color that it is.

Congratulations to all on the future champion!!

So happy that Zenyatta did not have any medical complications during her delivery. I do wish that mares would get a year off from breeding every so often and not be bred at all during their senior years. However, I have been told by someone associated with thoroughbred racing that it is a business first. At any rate, all the best to Zenyatta and her newest foal.

Amen to that one and hope that she will get a year off before being bred again. Beautiful baby, Zen, though I’m not surprised precious girl. You are very special. The Moss’ were blessed when they received you as a gift because a true gift you are to us all.

Mares do get a year off every so often., but Zenyatta is not due for one. Her (currently hypothetical) 2014 foal would probably be born late April. They might leave her open the year after in order to readjust her calendar and avoid a May foal in 2015. If not, they’d almost certainly leave her open in 2016. Meanwhile, if she needs a break for health reasons, either the vets or Mother Nature will give her one. Zenyatta is healthy and young, she’s avoided complications, she loves being a mother, and her genes are worthy of being added to the TB gene pool. All her offspring will receive lifelong care. There is no reason not to breed her.
Pat
I agree, if she is healthy (and seems she is) there is no reason not to breed her back. If they want to adjust foaling dates they would leave her open a year. If Mother Natural thinks it is time to take a year off, she will not conceive. She is big, strong, happy Mama…. she seems to enjoy being a Mom, no reason not to breed her back.

The name “Firezen” was cute. Can hear them singing “This colt is on Fire, this colt is on Fire” I’m sure he will be when he starts burning up the track. May this colt be a champion of champions. Congratulations to all. Thank you Lanes End for everything you have done for Zenyatta’s many fans.

What a wonderful, joyous day! She is one of a kind in every way. He is beautiful, I have a weakness for leggy chestnuts with big white blazes. But his EARS, pure Zenyatta! Congratulations to all!!!

Congrats to Zenyatta and her new colt! chestnut, go figure out of a bay and by a grey but with genetics anything is possible:) Maybe with that red color and the genes behind him he will grow up to be another Secretariat!
Jane
Congratulations to Zenyatta and her team on another beautiful colt! It will be so much fun to follow his growth and progress. Thank you, Team Zenyatta, for continuing to share the news and photos of Queen Z and her babies.

Z didn’t want the celebrating to stop!!! :D What a beautiful baby!! So glad all is well! ♥
Magic
Nice looking foal – wide in the forehead, good sized eyes, large nostrils. Time will tell but he should be a runner. Glad to see more folk taking an interest in mares (esp. this one). The stallion is merely a means to an end.
Randy
Wow… what a birthday present! Zenny you almost let the clock run out but leave it to you to wait until almost the last minute.
He is so beautiful and I’m glad everything went well. Thank you Team Z and to you, Kyle Acebo… this must be one of the sweetest mother/foal pictures I’ve ever seen.
