Zenyatta has always been one for special occasions. In true form, she foaled just before midnight on her 9th birthday, after a day of celebration.
She delivered a healthy colt by Tapit at 11:47 pm EST on Monday April 1. Estimated at 145 lbs, he is a leggy chestnut with a white blaze similar to Zenyatta’s. Eager to start his new life, he was standing on his own by 12:18 am and nursing within an hour.
Both are doing so very well, and it’s a joy to see how much Zenyatta loves being a mom.
Thank you to all of the fans who have been following The Queen and sending good wishes and blessings. It worked!
We can’t wait to spend the day with little 13Z tomorrow, and there will be many more pictures to come!

Oh the magic of genetics! Who’da thought she’d have a chestnut? Although it looks like he might become a strawberry roan as he gets older. Alot of light coloring around the mouth and eyes.
Congrats Zen, he’s a very handsome boy!!
Rene Ayers
This beautiful boy will be gray like his dad. Roans don’t gray on their muzzles.
Kathleen Reiman
13Z can only be a roan if the stallion is roan. Judging from Z’s first two foals she is (EeAt), or heterozygous for black with one or two copies of the brown agouti. A chestnut can carry the agouti and not show it, since the gene only affects black pigmented hair. Roan is a separate mutation like grey, and one parent must have it for it to be present in the foal, and Z does not have it.
Jei
There is no roan gene in Thoroughbreds, though there are some bizarre roan like colourings in AUS. Greys are just that – grey. Their coats lighten as they get older, unlike roans that stay the same colour. Hope that was interesting :)

Bless you and your little one Zenny. Good health to you both and happy days.

The Living Legend,,,does it yet again !

What a beauty! I have to ask. What are the odds of that baby coming out being a color that neither of his parents are?
carol in arkansas
Dont know about odds but….Tapit has chestnut offspring…Zenny’s half-bro Souper is chestnut….so it was possible
zenyen
In the most basic terms, approximately 25%
Kayla
He is only different because that baby hair. grey horses foal out either black or chestnut. 13Z Will not stay chestnut. When he loses that baby hair he will be a gorgeous grey just like his sire in his younger years and then as he gets older he will lose the dark grey and dapples and turn white-grey as he gets older.
carol in arkansas
He is still gorgeous …Zenny you are magnificent ….
Can hardly wait for more pictures ….and maybe a short video….if possible
Really want to see his feet….looking for ankle decoration like big bro…
love grays …..but hoping he stays red
Hugs for everybody

Congrats Zenyatta!! He’s beautiful. With a Mom and Dad like he has, who cares what color he is? He’s got a leg up on the other babies born this year… A FABULOUS mother! My chestnut babies have all been born with the pinkish around the eyes this new baby has. My bet is he will be a Redhead!!
SunnyB.
My fave color. What a cutie.
Congratulations to all the connections.
Will he be a red hairring? :)
Marshall (NC broad)
SunnyB.,
Too funny! A red “hairring” indeed!! We will have to wait and see.
BTW, are there any grey herrings?
Cheers
Cathleen

Dear Ann and Jerry Moss,
Warm congratulations on the beautiful chestnut colt! Thanks so much for sharing him with Zenyatta’s fans.
You must have many fine names in mind for handsome Z12, and no doubt you’ve thought of the one I’d like to suggest, but I’ll mention it anyway, along with a few connotations that might not have occurred to anyone. If Z12 has the right personality, I like the name Sting. There’s the obvious connection to Zenyatta’s name, via The Police–and as you probably know, Sting also was the name of Frodo’s sword in The Lord of the Ring. I also think of Muhammed Ali’s famous advice to prizefighters: “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” Sting seems a good name for a magnificent stallion.
Just a thought. Whatever his name turns out to be, Z12 will be a star. As will Z13!
Happiness,
Alice Fulton

Almost fooled us, Zenny! What a beautiful foal. This picture has brought tears of joy to my eyes. Zenyatta is such a loving mama. 145 lbs!! He’s a whopper – can’t wait to see more pictures and hopefully a video?
Thank you Team Z for always thinking of the Queen’s fans and bringing us this glorious news so quickly.
I’m willing to bet he’ll stay chestnut. From what I’ve researched it looks like he’s pinkish/reddish around the eyes, so he should stay this color. Love that he has his mommy’s white blaze. Watch out – he could be the third coming of Big Red!
Congratulations Zenyatta, Lane’s End and Team Zenyatta! :D
Angie Martin
Super Congrats to the Queen and her Beautiful new colt. He is stunning! Thank you to the Mosses and Lanes End for keeping us up to date on all the excitement. I have to say Zenyatta is the greatest mom! This is the most beautiful picture!
