Happy Friday!
If you’ve been waiting for an update about Zenyatta’s boys, this post is for you. Brothers Cozmic One and Ziconic spent the last few months with John Shirreffs at Belmont Park. They are pictured above eating some of their favorite treats, sweet potato for Ziconic and carrot juice for Coz.
This month, John and Dottie moved the horses back to Santa Anita for the winter. We’ll let you know how they’re settling in next week.
Here are a few photos from Ziconic’s November 25 workout at Belmont Park and a couple of Coz breezing as well. Photos courtesy of Dottie Ingordo-Shirreffs.
Enjoy!

Today’s devo:
Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises. (Hebrews 8:6)
Christ is the Mediator of a new covenant, according to Hebrews 8:6. What does that mean? It means that his blood — the blood of the covenant (Luke 22:20; Hebrews 13:20) — purchased the fulfillment of God’s promises for us.
It means that God brings about our inner transformation by the Spirit of Christ.
And it means that God works all his transformation in us through faith in all that God is for us in Christ.
The new covenant is purchased by the blood of Christ, effected by the Spirit of Christ, and appropriated by faith in Christ.
The best place to see Christ working as the Mediator of the new covenant is in Hebrews 13:20–21:
Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant [this is the purchase of the new covenant], even Jesus our Lord, equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
The words “working in us that which is pleasing in his sight” describe what happens when God writes the law on our hearts in the new covenant. And the words “through Jesus Christ” describe Jesus as the Mediator of this glorious work of sovereign grace.
So the meaning of Christmas is not only that God replaces shadows with Reality, but also that he takes the reality and makes it real to his people. He writes it on our hearts. He does not lay his Christmas gift of salvation and transformation down for you to pick up in your own strength. He picks it up and puts in your heart and in your mind, and seals to you that you are a child of God.

Dear Sue,
Thank you so much for your encouraging messages. A few months ago, we watched the movie, “The Ragamuffin Gospel” – the true story of Richie Mullins, who wrote so many great rock and Christian songs. There was a line in the movie that is the most profound thing we’ve ever heard. It was spoken by Brendan Manning –
“The only thing that God will ask us just after our end of time here, when we meet
Him Face to face is:
‘Did you believe me when I said I loved you?’ ”
Hope you and everyone here on Zenny’s website has a love-ly day.

Prolific dressage stallion Breitling W put down
Carole Mortimer Horse & Hound 14 December, 2015
Breitling W, the 2014 Hanoverian stallion of the year, was put down at the weekend (13 December) after suffering from colic.
The 24-year-old was owned and competed in international grand prix by German trainer Wolfram Wittig.
The pair competed at Hickstead and in 2001 Breitling W was the winner of its CDI grand prix and Nations Cup, competing alongside his older full brother Meggles Biagiotti W (Marcus Gribbe).

Dear BGG,
Thank you for the link about Breitling W’s passing. Today, Dimaggio left us, also.
Sad news — two fine horses, Breitling W and Dimaggio, of the dressage world.
Breitling W euthanized due to colic, and Dimaggio euthanized at age 20 due to laminitis.
These awful killers strike again.
RIP Breitling W

I was feeling a bit sad today so I came here. Just reading and seeing things about the two boys made me feel better. Interesting about AP, but SI had a chance to vote Secretariat sportsman of the year and didn’t.

I am distressed to learn of your loss. This is a terrible thing to happen to innocent people and to their friends. My mother’s doctor interned at Loma Linda. He loved it there.

Thanks for the “heads up” Max. I apparently missed the last several pages of the previous blog when this one went up. I went back to see if I could find what this referred to and found Terry’s sad post.

Dear Terry C.,
Glad that Coz and Ziconic boosted your spirits some — this place has therapeutic benefits.
You are correct about SI. They didn’t choose Secretariat. Now they didn’t choose American Pharoah either. The Athlete of the Year is a horse named American Pharoah, IMHO.
Take care and stay tuned!

Secretariat was on the cover of SI, though and AP did not even make that.
Very interesting magazine – lots of lip service.
Serena is an amazing tennis player and will make a great SI and cover – why
was she not voted for ?????
Tizgood
Correction – Secretariat was on the cover of Time – June 11, 1973, not SI – guess they
have always been “snobby”.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Secretariat was also on the cover of NewsWeek that same week. I have my copy from 1973. That was the week leading up to the Belmont Stakes, and if I recall correctly, he made the cover of three magazines that week — maybe the third was SI? I think so.
Marshall
Marshall (NC Broad)
I just checked, and Secretariat was on the cover of SI that week, June 11, 1973. The ol’ brain cells function correctly sometimes! Big Red was on the cover of SI the next week, too — after his unbelievable Belmont romp.
Jackie Stewart won the 1973 cover award. I’m afraid I am unfamiliar with him.
Goodnight everyone!
Marshall (NC Broad)
Oops!
I am wrong about his being on the cover of SI the next week.
Sorry.
Tizgoog
Dear Marshall,
Thanks for recalling that great bit of history of Secretariat,
seems like the times have changed. So happy that he was on all of those covers, before and after the Belmont. I think it had to do with Penny and her families historical background as an american in racing and all that she brought to the sport at that point in time.
Serena Williams is also an american icon as well.
Love and hugs
Tizgood
Dear Marshall,
Thanks so much for recalling this great bit of history of Secretariat, amazing he was on the cover of so many magazines before and after the Belmont, such a special American horse with a historic American racing family – Penny Chenery was and still is great for racing. Wish she could live on forever.

Can anyone explain why Sports Illustrated bothered to have a poll?
Clearly, the two top vote-getters were discarded. My answer is a snide remark:
Guess they wanted a “cheesecake cover”. :-)
Serena Williams is an outstanding tennis player, so congratulations are in order.
Obviously, I am supremely disappointed, and sad to admit that I was snookered for a second time. First with Secretariat, and now with American Pharoah. However, we don’t need SI to tell us who won, do we?

Nothing new for SI.
In my opinion and mine only, the magazine lacks substance and seemed much better decades ago, when I would pick one up.
This in mind, I think it is their ploy to get their site looked at. There was never any intention of naming AP the winner and this falls in line with all past polls.
Serena Williams is an outstanding tennis player and athlete, but she has plenty more opportunities and awards in her career to come.
SI should be polled as the biggest loser in promoting ALL sporting events.

I checked on the Derby Prep races that will be coming up at Santa Anita and I found these: The Sham, Jan 16th; The Robert B. Lewis, Feb. 13th; the San Felipe, March 12th; Santa Anita Derby, April 9th. Depending on how ZI goes for his Maiden start, anything is possible for him to get some points and hopefully with Mikey aboard. There are many Preps, as you know, all across the Country. Don’t know how JS and the Moss’ might consider them.
Would love to see COZ have his first win with Mikey aboard too. Godspeed to both of them and safe and sound always. Love and Hugs, JB
Tizgood
Dear Judy,
Thanks for checking out he prep races. You are right, some of the horses got into the derby with a couple of the higher point preps. Usually the Mosses don’t like to ship out of CA, but with JS in NY now, and Zi already breezing well in NY, maybe he will be adaptable to travel?
Looked at Giacomo’s Equibase – he ran quite a few races at 2yo (3 or 4) and
then 3 or 4 before the derby all coming in 3 or 4 th only to win the KY Derby.
His equibase is interesting. The great son of Holy Bull that Mike Smith got redemption on.

It seems that CC is having every Saturday early-morning workouts at Los Al? Can anyone tell me the procedure to get in that early in the morning to watch him? Also, can you get breakfast there? Thanks, Cheryl
Terry Crow
Cheryl–All you need to do is drive up to the preferred parking area and walk in. There is usually an announcement when CC is coming on the track to work as the track is cleared before he does. There is a restaurant named Schwannie’s, I may have the spelling wrong, where most of the track people hang out. It over looks the track and is located about where the bend is for the QH races, commonly known as the gap. And don’t worry. It is a friendly place and you will be welcome. How far away from Los Al do you live? Perhaps I could meet you there some time.

November 15 Cherokee Devotional
Sit here with me and listen to the woods. Did you know the trees can talk? They do. They tell me all sorts of tales, for most have been here several hundred years and they have seen such things that we can’t even imagine.
Yes, they have spoken of the wild animals, the strange ones and they have seen the things that made the huge bounders tumble from the ground. They have seen the floods that left these shells buried in the earth. And they can tell of people-your own ancestors.
But others, too, drovers with herds of cattle, outlaws, and hunters, devious men hiding their cache. Some have left carvings on the stone. Put your arms around that tree as far as you can reach and listen…what do you hear?
Holy Mother Earth, the trees and all nature, are witnesses of your thoughts and deeds.
A Winnebago Saying
Vampressqueen Sue Colvin
Morning Zsters?
Today’s devo:
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)
As I was about to begin this devotional, I received word that Marion Newstrum had just died. Marion and her husband Elmer have been part of Bethlehem longer than most of our members have been alive. She was 87. They had been married 64 years.
When I spoke to Elmer and told him I wanted him to be strong in the Lord and not give up on life, he said, “He has been a true friend.” I pray that all Christians will be able to say at the end of life, “Christ has been a true friend.”
Each Advent I mark the anniversary of my mother’s death. She was cut off in her 56th year in a bus accident in Israel. It was December 16, 1974. Those events are incredibly real to me even today. If I allow myself, I can easily come to tears — for example, thinking that my sons never knew her. We buried her the day after Christmas. What a precious Christmas it was!
Many of you will feel your loss this Christmas more pointedly than before. Don’t block it out. Let it come. Feel it. What is love for, if not to intensify our affections — both in life and death? But, O, do not be bitter. It is tragically self-destructive to be bitter.
Jesus came at Christmas that we might have eternal life. “I came that they might have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). Elmer and Marion had discussed where they would spend their final years. Elmer said, “Marion and I agreed that our final home would be with the Lord.”
Do you feel restless for home? I have family coming home for the holidays. It feels good. I think the bottom line reason for why it feels good is that they and I are destined in the depths of our being for an ultimate Homecoming. All other homecomings are foretastes. And foretastes are good.
Unless they become substitutes. O, don’t let all the sweet things of this season become substitutes of the final great, all-satisfying Sweetness. Let every loss and every delight send your hearts a-homing after heaven.
Christmas. What is it but this: I came that they might have life? Marion Newstrum, Ruth Piper, and you and I — that we might have Life, now and forever.
Make your Now the richer and deeper this Christmas by drinking at the fountain of Forever. It is so near.

Dear Sheena,
Good news for Fibbs…he can still eat his tater pancakes even if festival of lights is over! Can’t figure out why Victoria and Albert Museum isn’t interested in Lady Thatcher’s belongings. You’re right…she is part of history. I will look for the cat’s diary video. Fingers crossed Coneygree can get ready for the King George. It’s really astonishing how many meds Wookie takes. It’s good that Mom is a vet and can monitor him. I think we’d all feel better if he could be weaned off some of those meds! I think plenty of time has gone by and they should add a new Garden Cat. Certainly not a replacement, just a “cat presence.” Zoe was so funny when Mommy caught her on PayPal. I just love that little dog! And Diane is just so clever giving her a “voice.” God bless Flossie. May she thrive. Happy Tuesday. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy XOXO

Zenyatta had great visits to Oaklawn. AP had it all his way there this year. That was when we saw how much he enjoyed the slop. Selfishly I would love for the boys to come to Oaklawn. My brother goes to Arkansas all the time and I might be able to see them in person. That would be the thrill of a lifetime. Jackie Stewart was a brilliant Formula 1 driver but he was no Secretariat. Just got back from the vet with Lola. As was the case last time she had teeth problems (2 and 1/2 years ago), she needed extractions and sutures. She has only five teeth left in her mouth. She’s doing fine and will be on pain med for three days and antibiotic for seven. Didn’t want to put her through this so soon after her surgery in June, but knew something wasn’t right these past few weeks and I’m so glad it’s over with. Went back to the vet who did the extractions the first time as I trust her completely. My poor little girl will be off “guard duty” for a while. She’s still a little bit groggy.

Oh yes. I mix dry food with water and then add moist food and she does very well. She just had her first meal of the day at 7:00 PM. Dear Tiz:
Actually, the vet said to just give LM her usual food and that’s what I did. I am adding water to the dry kibble so that it softens some and then I mix the moist food with that. She only eats about two teaspoons of dry and two teaspoons of the moist food, twice a day. She’s a tiny little Sweetie.

Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Judy B.,
Glad that Lola is doing well. Smudge has lost some teeth, too. He came to the shelter with two missing from the left upper side, and while he was under anesthesia for neutering, the shelter vet scaled his teeth due to tartar. The bottom two (directly under) were loose and so they extracted those. My vet said he could have had some incident which knocked the two top ones out, and the bottom ones were compromised, also. I have read that small dogs can have dental problems due to their small sized mouths — teeth are crowded close together. Smudge doesn’t seem to notice their absence since he eats well and chews on dental treats, as well as some sticks when he is outside. He doesn’t have the best breath, though!
Love and pats to little Lola Mae!
Hugs and Love
Judy Berube from Rhode Island
Dear Marshall:
Glad Smudge got through his procedures well. He is so lucky now to have you for his Mama.
Yes, small dogs seem to be prone to teeth problems. Lola Mae probably has more than most due to the degenerating bone problem she was born with too. Might play a role. Two and a half years ago, she had 11 teeth extracted and I knew something wasn’t right over the past few weeks, so I’m not surprised that more of her teeth were loose and needed to be removed. She has only five teeth left in her mouth now, but she’s enjoyed both of her meals today and will be on the antibiotic med for another 6 days. She has one more day of pain med, but doesn’t appear to be in any discomfort, thank God.
I have tried giving her dental chews and other hard cookies over the years, but she likes to hide them rather than chew them. I have to keep track of where they’re hidden and pick them up so that we don’t attract any “unwanted guests”. She is just so cute, she has me smiling all the time. Thank you for your sweet concern for her. Love and Hugs, to you, Smudge and Bailey

American Pharoah a runaway choice in readers’ Sportsman of the Year poll
by SI Wire Sun Dec. 13, 2015
American Pharoah has won the online readers’ poll for Sports Illustrated’s 2015 Sportsman of the Year, topping 11 other candidates across all major sports as the one who embodied the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement this year.
The three-year-old colt ended a 37-year Triple Crown drought with a huge win in the Belmont Stakes—the 12th Triple Crown winner in history. He completed his career with a 6 1/2 length win in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic in his final start before heading off to the breeding shed.

Excellent well-written article.
Triple Crown Winner American Pharoah Is Not “Just A Horse”
Serena Williams fully deserves her Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year award, but dismissing American Pharoah does a great disservice to what is, at it’s core, a great American sport.
Heidi E. Carpenter in THe Caluldron Sports Illustrated Dec.15 2015
American Pharoah’s run in Sports Illustrated’s 2015 Sportsperson of the Year reader poll reflected his races: grabbing a short lead early that grew until he was lengths in front of his closest competitors. By the poll’s conclusion on Sunday, he’d tallied 47 percent of the votes, ahead of the Kansas City Royals (29 percent) and Lionel Messi (6 percent).
On Monday, SI announced that Serena Williams, who’d tallied a mere 1 percent in the reader’s poll, had won its 2015 Sportsperson of the Year Award. An icon of the sports world and one of the greatest tennis players in history, Williams — who authored a 53–3 season in 2015 — was certainly a deserving winner.

Max. Well put. I was very disappointed when Big Red did not win and this was was the clincher. SI will be out of business soon.

Dear BGG:
Thanks for posting this article. It’s very well done. AP did something that hadn’t been done in 37 years and only the 12th horse to do it since 1919! Love and Hugs, JB
