Regretfully, we have to confirm that Zenyatta aborted her pregnancy mid-April. The cause of the abortion was found to be a low grade placentitis that triggered premature placental separation. Zenyatta has bounced back well and is enjoying the spring sunshine in her paddock.
The staff at Lane’s End Farm continues to give Zenyatta the best care possible, and for that we are incredibly grateful. Fans, we thank each of you for your love and support. Love and hugs to all.

All my love and well wishes to our Queen. Glad she is ok.

So horribly sad to hear of Z’s miscarriage. What heartbreaking thing to happen to our Queen and her careers and connections.
Hoping this does not affect her fertility and ability to carry future foals to term.
Very pleased to see Coz thriving in his new career. Hope Ziconic finds his niche.

Very sad. So glad Zenyatta is okay. She actually has 4 angel babies now. Her very first pregnancy (before Coz) she aborted very early. For me she is still the queen mother of all horses.?

The initial breeding to Bernardini took but it was reabsorbed after the 30 day check. This is a very common occurrence, a mare is not usually considered “settled” in foal until after 60 days.
Reabsorbed is not counted as a foal. For a mare and “aborted” foal happens to a pregnancy lost after 7 months.
0-60 days: The loss is “reabsorbed” and the mare is usually re-bred in the season.
60 days – 7 months: the loss is called a “slipped pregnancy” and the mare is usually left open for the year.
7 months to due date: A lost pregnancy can be an “abortion” or a “stillbirth”. These are usually due to some sort of infection or the foal trapping it’s own placenta. They are more physically difficult since the foal can be close to full sized and the mare usually needs to be cleaned out and on antibiotics to ensure her health.

This is a very sad loss to her connections and her fans. I am relieved to hear that Zenyatta is doing well. It looks like she has a chestnut companion. Best to both of them for a good summer in the sun.

I am left with questions and concerns caused by a lack of communication to a logical mind. I have expressed my questions and concerns on my own FB page.

Thank you, Team Zenyatta, for sharing this news with us, as well as these beautiful photos of our Queen. It is wonderful to know she is recovering and having time to enjoy the green grass and sunshine. Like many others on this site, I have followed Zenyatta since her early racing days and I have developed a deep love for her, even though I have only been able to see her race in person one time (Apple Blossom), her health and safety and well being are important to me too. I am grateful to this site for letting us remain a part of the Zenyatta nation. Thank you!!

Thank you so much for the update. I have patiently been waiting for the big day. I’m devastated and feel so sad for Zenyatta. She has had such bad luck the last few years. I hope if she is bred again she has a healthy foal. I’d love to see her have everything work out. Again thank you for the update. Prayers for Zenyatta and her owner. ❤️

Thank you for the update, this is no ones fault, it happens, my mare did the same thing when she was 10 1/2 months pregnant, foal was born dead, I know you take the best of care for her, prayers and God bless, she looks great.
Rosie
Very sad that Zenny lost her foal, but so grateful that our beloved queen is alright and she looks good on the pictures. She is and always will be most important to all of us. Thank you team Z Ann Jerry for the update.
Robin B.
The Z Nation is devastated but of course not as much as Zenny’s family, caretakers, and connections. Thank you so much for your notice and the pictures to reassure us that the Queen is ok. Sending you all of our love and good thoughts.
Donna Z
Thank you for the pictures showing everyone that Zenyatta is doing well. Seeing them immediately made me feel better that she is healthy and is back to enjoying the spring sunshine. It was heartbreaking to hear about her aborting the foal and my thoughts and prayers were and are with everyone connected with our special queen.
Thank you for continuing to be so open with Zenyatta’s fans and keeping us informed about her despite the undeserved criticism.
May God bless all who care for our precious horses and do all they can to give them wonderful lives.
Becky from Toronto
Donna Z, my words exactly. The pictures made me so happy knowing she was OK. I didn’t want to read anything because I knew there were going to be people criticizing which is always going to happen. Everybody should be happy for the pictures and updates. Lanes End is a world class farm, things happen through no fault of the farm, the horse or the owners. Its devastating but its life. Thanks for the website especially the pictures.
Anne
Like so many others, I have been looking forward to the birth of Zenyatta’s foal. Thank you for the update. I’m glad Zenyatta is doing well.

We are deeply saddened to hear of another of our Queen Z’s loss. It’s exceptionally hard when we all hope to see the same greatness from her offspring as we have witnessed in her. We hope that one day another great dancer will arrive to blow them all away
Donna
Michele, a great name to consider for a future foal..”Something” Great Dancer”,,…
Ann
I was just rewatching one of pre race dances and someone’s personal recorded video of her turning the stretch as she went after Blame like a freight train. She is still in my heart. Thank you for sharing the updates, good and bad. I hope her other filly has success and carries on her excellent form and soundness as a racer. Looks like she’s having a good life either way. I follow some groups that track some of the wild horses in South Dakota and life is not easy for them, these things happen. I still hope to catch a glimpse of her or a baby on a farm tour one of these days. Her, California Chrome or Tiz Now are my dream list!

I am so sorry Queen Z…? you will always be #1 to me. Love you so much sweet girl.

It is numbing to hear that Zenyatta has lost another foal, even surreal. My prayers for Zenny to continue to recover and to Ann my heartfelt sympathy. May God give you love, strength, and courage.

Like everyone else, I was looking forward to the upcoming birth, as I did for all of the other ones. I was just thinking about her this past week and wondering when she would foal. And then the news came out that she lost her baby. Immediately I was extremely concerned as she was due soon. To lose a foal at such a late date is concerning. Thank you for posting these pictures. I was worried sick. She does look good and hopefully she can have other foals. But if not, she will have a wonderful life with her family and those who love her. Hugs and kisses beautiful girl…
Patti
Yes, like all others I have been looking forward to Zenyatta’s upcoming foaling and have been checking this site frequently anticipating the Big Day. When I first read the news I could scarcely believe it, then was heartbroken to see it posted so many places. Immediately I began to pray Zenyatta was Okay. So very happy to see this posting that she is well. Relieved that Zenyatta is well and sad about her precious foal.
Thank you to all of Team Z for taking care of our Queen.

She was perfection on the track and gave us all so many memories. Sometimes greatness can not be duplicated. I am so sorry she lost her foal but am very grateful we did not lose her as well as so often happens. She has a buddy to help her move forward. Thank you to all for her excellent care and for letting her fans know of her condition.
