Regretfully, we have to confirm that Zenyatta aborted her pregnancy mid-April. The cause of the abortion was found to be a low grade placentitis that triggered premature placental separation. Zenyatta has bounced back well and is enjoying the spring sunshine in her paddock.
The staff at Lane’s End Farm continues to give Zenyatta the best care possible, and for that we are incredibly grateful. Fans, we thank each of you for your love and support. Love and hugs to all.

Much too often I have said this prayer but the words help to heal my broken heart as I hope they do yours…. Lord.. grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change… the courage to change the things I can … and the wisdom to know the difference.
May God heal and comfort you in these saddest of times ?

Thank you for giving us an explanation on what transpired. I know the circumstances surrounding this had to be terribly emotional and hard on all the fabulous people who take care of our beloved Zenyatta. I so appreciate all that Team Zenyatta does for us crazy Z’sters….The tears won’t stop as I think of all that Z has gone through. I can’t wait to hear was Z17’s name is. She is a beautiful filly and she gives me hope when all seems lost. RIP little Z18. I know you are running with all who went before you. I love you Zenyatta.

Mother Nature takes care of these things sometimes. It happens. Most importantly, she is fine, with her buddies in the paddock, and enjoying her days. That’s more than can be said for many.. Now, let her be a horse for a couple years, let her body, her hormones, etc. get back to working order as the placenta I was told when this happened to my mare is full of hormones. How many women out there (hand raised) has had a hormone issue at one time or another. She has had only ONE break from purposely breeding, after she had Coz. I saw a video where a man named David said she got too fat so they had to get her back in shape. Let her be for a while, things will work out naturally. She already has foals, her sister Ebby is the one I just have a feeling is going to be the one that has winner foals, and see what happens. Thank you for the update.
Ashton
I so sorry she lost this foal. I want to thank you for keeping us informed and sharing pictures of her enjoy the beautiful Kentucky spring. You are all in our thoughts and prayers in good times and sad times. We love Zenyatta and all her human connections.

So sorry and sad to hear this news but so thankful that Zenyatta is doing well. Thanks for letting us know. On a happier note I also have been watching Cozmic One on the De Sousa Stables facebook page and it’s so wonderful to actually get to see him and how well he’s doing. Team Z really found him the best new home and he is happy and thriving. So grateful for people like Ann Moss and John and Dottie and of course all of you at Lane’s End. Thank you so much for all you do.
Christine Klass
Thank you Annie for that beautiful thought.

Sorry to here of this sad news. Don’t the owners think it’s time to retire her period? She has had such bad luck.

My question is why the long wait to post that this foal had been “aborted”? The rumors had been swirling for at least 2 weeks but no one (not you, not Lane’s End, NO ONE) would confirm this. Fans even started to become “ugly” with one another over who knew what was the truth and who didn’t. Then began phone calls (multiple ones I have been told) being made to Lane’s End with inquiries which I am sure they were more than too busy to give the proper attention to.
She may not be their only horse but she is for most of us here at The Forum/The Blogs………………
Just please help me understand the reasoning for all of us having to find out from some of the racing publications who also had no facts, just the statement that the foal was lost (and not even WHEN it occurred) .
Naturally all of us who love Zenyatta were concerned about HER and HER welfare once this rumor was confirmed.

Dear Judy:
I’m thinking Team Z and Lane’s End Staff were shocked and devastated when this happened mid April, about two weeks after Z’s birthday celebration. I am sure they gave all of their attention to Zenny after the loss of her baby and were occupied with only making sure that Z was OK and well on her way to recovery.
We are lucky that Team Z cares enough about us (fans) to share this Blog with us, as they know how much we all love Zenny. Other owners and farms do not share so readily.
Let’s try to understand the emotion and circumstances that must have ensued when this happened and be grateful that Z is OK. RIP LITTLE Z18. Love and Hugs, JB

Thank you for your rational words. We are so lucky Team Z continues to share with us and keeps this site going. We may love Zenyatta, but they owe us nothing. I am thankful to finally see this official posting, which I’m sure was hard to write.

I agree with you 100%….I hate reading negatives comments here. She is our idol, but she isn’t our Mare❤️
Sandi Zarzycki
Glad she’s ok.

So sorry for all Zenny’s connections and big mama herself. At least now we know what happened and the speculating is over. Zenny looks wonderful in the green, green grass of Kentucky. Thankfully animals bounce back sooner than humans in these cases. Most importantly she is doing well!! She can certainly be proud of her firstborn CoZ who is learning a whole new career and seems very happy. Sending all love and hugs. sue

I love Queen Z so much. I’m glad she’s doing well.
I lost six babies when I was 26-35 years old. God knows what he’s doing. My first pregnancy gave me a daughter who made me a grandma at 36. We raised her baby girl as my daughter was a teenager. So, I had another baby to love.
Zenyatta has another angel. God bless her and her wonderful caretakers.
J. Frazier
Glad to know she is A-OK. There is always next year. These things do happen in breeding.
Carla
I know that in the wild a mare will breed every year, but maybe it’s time to give her some time off?

Sending many prayers for Zenyatta, so very sorry to hear about her loss. She is loved by many and we all want and hope for the very best for her. Thank you to the Moss family and Lanes End and all those that have a part in caring for this amazing equine athlete. Wishing things could be different for her in her role as mom. She has experienced more then her share of bad luck in that regard. So relieved that she will be okay and wished I was able to hug her neck and give her many kisses and treats, tell her everything is going to be all right and from one mom to another, wish her a Happy Mother’s Day! With All My Love,
Carol
I am so very sorry to hear this news. I am sure your hearts must be breaking. Thank you so much for keeping all Zenyatta’s page up and keeping all of us fans in her loop. Many Blessings to you all?
Kathy
Sad to hear, but most importantly the Queen has bounced back.
Hugs to all
Tricia
Sorry to hear the sad news. I hope they wait to next year to bred her and give her the rest of this year to just recuperate. She’ll come back and be fitter next breeding season. I know her owners love her and will put her first.
Nancy A Nash Coleman
Thank you for continuing to share with us … you don’t have to but, I appreciate that you do.
I have no doubt that the Queen receives the best care possible … and that she will continue to do so.
As sad as this is, it does happen (obviously) … I’m just pleased that she is well!!
Hugs to all who love the Queen and her progeny!!
Again, Ann, thank you for sharing her with us … especially when it opens you up to ill informed criticism. I have nothing but, the deepest respect for you and your horsemanship!! Much love and peace!
Leslie Britton
Thank you for letting her fans know what happened
I feel so sorry for Zenyatta
how much more heartbreak can she stand
Please stop breeding her please my god !!
Horrible Horrible – she has lost two now
She has done enough and deserves retirement
I am sorry but this is too heartbreaking to not speak my mind
Why keep breeding her
Pat Beck
Heartbreaking news. Love you always, my Queen, and your gorgeous babies, both those who have left us too soon and those still among us.
Stacey
This is proof that anything can happen with horses. The good part is the mare is ok. The tragic part is she lost another foal. The people at Lands end are good horse people. She is a great mare even if the breeding thing has not gone the way everybody wanted it to. On a positive note the updates on Coz being retrained all appear to be positive he seems to be like the training and appears to be headed in the right direction.
Sally Blank (cherishes Z and her foals)
My heart is breaking for Zenyatta and her important connections, one of them being Ann. The most beautiful mare and one who has been such a wonderful mom is denied having a foal; it is so sad. I am thrilled to know Zenyatta is doing well as this is to me what really matters. “Life is just like a bunch of chocolates”.
I thank you Ann and Lane’s End for always sharing Zenyatta with us. Zenyatta is and will always be my mare horse of my life time. God bless her and all of you.
