VERSAILLES, KY — (April 13, 2016) It is with heavy hearts that Team Zenyatta and Lane’s End Farm must announce the passing of Zenyatta’s 2016 foal by War Front. His death occurred at approximately 9:00 am this morning due to complications of meconium aspiration syndrome. We express our deep gratitude to Dr. Peter Morresey and the professionals at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital who worked tirelessly to support the mare and foal. Zenyatta is in good health and back home at Lane’s End Farm.
Update — 5:30 pm
Zenyatta has returned to the field that is her original home at Lane’s End. She has been paired with the mare Vixana, who is also owned by Jerry and Ann Moss. Zenyatta and Vixana are the same age, and they trained together under John Shirreffs at Barn 55. The two are becoming reacquainted and have already shared a drink at the water bowl.

Dear Mr and Mrs Moss and the Z team;
Thank you for the recent photos of Zen. It certainly has been a difficult time for you all and to take time to assure us that Z is fine by sharing the photos and update – well, I can’t express how much I appreciate it. Thank you for all the updates, photos, and sharing!!!

Thank you for sharing so much with all of us. I hope it is a comfort to all who love and care for Z to know so many are crying with you. I do so appreciate being a part of all of it, good and bad. As one said ” love hurts” but I do not want to live in a world without it. I am glad to see Zenyatta back in the paddock she knows. I do hope she does not grieve for long. Animals accept loss better than their humans, at least I hope so. My prayers are with you and all who feel bad right now. I know God loves all the animals and He will take great care of all of them.

There really are no words, just tears and reflection on how hard life can be.
Such a beautiful young foal, full of promise.
It’s good to see Zenny back at Lane’s End, looking calm and beautiful, with her pal and, of course, with Ann.
A very sad day.

Mr. & Mrs. Moss, Team Z, and Lane’s End staff – You have no idea (or maybe you do) how comforting the picture is of Zenyatta in her original field with Vixana and Mrs. Moss. How amazing that you have reassured us in this way.
We cannot thank you enough for your kindness to us in your own dark hours. We are eternally grateful for this.
And if we could, we would ALL wrap our arms around you.
Celeste/Massachusetts
Robin, I love what you wrote. I feel the same.

Words cannot convey how very sorry I am. Heartbroken, devastated, and gutted. Headache from the tears all day. I called the foal Spirit Prince as I believed he had a beautiful, precious spirit, which will forever stay in the hearts of so mamy. Heartfelt condolences and dearest love, always, to Zenyatta and the Mosses. May you find some comfort in the love that is with you during this very sad time. Wishing dear Zenyatta health and comfort.

It both heals and hurts to see Ann in the field with Zenyatta. Love in hope and love in grief. I hope they soothe one another’s spirits.

Ann & Jerry and Zenyatta; I am glad to see Zenyatta with a former friend and with Ann.
I have been worrying about Ann & Z, and I am sure Ann has been worrying about Zenyatta! Together, they will over come. Love will do this. I guess it is not us that should question why Z’s sweet colt passed for God only knows that.
Just know, that we Zsters and dumplings are grieving and we wish we could comfort you more. Thank you for all you have done for us.
loving Z with kisses and her sons
always Z princess & Z16 prince

Thank you for this update. It is very comforting to see Zenyatta in her paddock with Ann by her side and getting reacquainted with an old friend. I can’t believe how much this hurts – and then to think how much Team Z and everyone at Lane’s End and all those who worked so hard to save this dear little colt and especially Zenyatta must be hurting. Sending love to all ❤️

There are no words to express the grief we are all experiencing. My heart and prayers are with Zenyatta, her lost foal, and everyone attached to her. I know everything was done to save the foal and we will never understand why this had to happen…only time will help heal the hurt. But we will always remember him and his lost sister..God Bless the entire Zenyatta team, everyone at the farm and the hospital. Thank you for all you did to avoid this.

Thank you for sharing Zenyatta and her babies with us. It is comforting to see Ann with Z
In the field. I know how hard it is for me, a caring fan but can’t imagine how difficult it must be for all of Team Z.

Such sad news, poor little boy But at least Princess Z will have someone to frolic and run with. Deepest condolences to Zenyatta, the Moss’s and her Lanes End family. Its never easy to lose one, especially a foal.

In Dan Fogelberg’s song Run for the Roses there is a lyric that really sums up horses in general and breeding in particular: “It’s the chance of a lifetime in a lifetime of chance.” They are so strong and powerful, yet so vulnerable and easily hurt at the same time. Having lost horses of my own, my heart goes out to Zenyatta especially, and all her connections and fans.
KJ Bailey
Prayers for Ann, Zenyatta’s best friend and Jerry, who loves her, too. Best wishes to all the connections to cope and move past this so sad day. Much love to Zenyatta and her new, old friend Vixana, that they find comfort in friendship.
Mary
Condolences to the Mosses, Lanes End and all involved with Zenyatta. Very sad news for all.

So sorry about Zenyetta’s baby. These things happen. I know she is loved and well cared for. This will help her get through this. I am looking forward to next year, hopefully, she will have a new baby to bring her joy. I am praying for her, as well as Ann and Jerry.

Just a girl and her horse…what a special bond they share. Although I am delighted to see Queen Zenyatta with her Dear Ann and her friend from the past Vixana, the expansive landscape, although lovely, seems to reflect the loss and emptiness left behind of a young soul full of promise and joy. Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Moss, Team Zenyatta, and Team Lane’s End for allowing us to join in Zenyatta’s life. We love her dearly, as do you.
May the Good Lord hold Our Queen and ALL who love Her in His palm,
xoxo to ALL,
Mary in Boone

I am heartbroken for Zenny and her family and everyone involved.
It was such a lot of work for Z and she was so tired, thank goodness she survived and has Ann to help her through her grief. I am so very sad that her little son did not make it and send love and peace and know he is with his sister.God bless and keep you close.

Thank goodness Ann spent all this time with Zenny leading up to the birth of Z16
because I think Zenny really needs Ann now.
It is heartbreaking to think how hurt Zenyatta must have when she boarded that trailer to go back to the farm without her newborn colt. It’s heartbreaking to think how sad Zenyatta must be tonight/
What a tragedy.
