ZENYATTA WILL BE BRED TO TAPIT
Owners Jerry and Ann Moss announced today that ZENYATTA, the 2010 Horse of the Year, will be sent to Tapit to be bred in 2012. “ZENYATTA’s pedigree is a great match to the A.P. Indy sire line, and in choosing Tapit, we think this will be a dynamic mating. Her first mating was to Bernardini, a son of A.P. Indy, and we are thrilled with her colt.”
A grandson of Lane’s End’s two-time leading sire A.P. Indy, Tapit is by Pulpit and out of the stakes winner Tap Your Heels. Tapit, a Grade 1 winner, was third on the General Sire list last year and is currently ranked second on that list. He is the sire of three Breeders’ Cup winners in his first four crops, including last year’s champion juvenile colt Hansen. Tapit stands at Gainesway.
ZENYATTA is boarded at Mr. and Mrs. William S. Farish’s Lane’s End Farm near Versailles, Kentucky. She foaled a colt by Bernardini on March 8 and the Mosses were at Lane’s End for the birth.

Oh Zenny – how PRECIOUS is your little 12Z!!!!! (I know you aren’t writing these days, but maybe someone is reading the posts to you :-). I’ll be interested to hear what the people who KNOW something about horses have to say about this announcement.
Terry Crow
Sandy-I’m still working on your request. It may be impossible. I think I burned all of them some time ago.

True Nick of Tapit to Zenyatta is a C, whereas
Bernardini was A+. However, Tapit has proven his
Ability by adding speed, Zenny needs that, and precosity,
Which she also needs. Maybe you will bring another
Talented grey to the mix, Zazu and Hansen are both
By Tapit.
Great job, Zenny you taught Z12 how to graze, also
Noticed bloodhorse photo you are letting go a little,
Now looking at the camera with him. A great mother
Nurtures and learns to let go. Looks like you are on the way.

This will be a great match!! Iwas hoping they would breed her to someone like him or him. They will have a great baby!!

Breed her to Tiznow… would love to see a Tizyatta!

I’m a big fan of A.P. Indy, so I’m so happy that Zenyatta will be bred to him! Loving this new photo of 12 Zenyatta and Momma Z…makes my heart sing on this cloudy, rainy Kentucky morning. Peace and love to all!
Much love,

Hi Sanrda, AP Indy is retired, but Zenny will be bred to Tapit, one of his grandsons, while Bernardini is a son of AP Inday. Tapit as has also been a very sucessfull sire, Very exciting and can’t wati to see what the two of the will produce.
Terry Crow
Someone, I think it was Sierra, asked about fantasy matings for Zenyatta and who would you choose. I chose A.P. Indy with the caveat that he as pensioned off. This is the next best thing.

Excellent cross!

This is going to be wonderful!

Zenyatta. How is it possible that both you and your baby get better looking with each passing day? Your photos are so beautiful.
As for the date news, I always trust Ann and Jerry Moss and Team Z to make the best decisions for you. This looks like another one.

This sounds like an excellent mating choice – you can’t beat that A.P. Indy sire line and Tapit is REALLY HOT now. I can’t wait to see if Zenyatta has an adorable gray filly next year. (Tapit does tend to pass his coat color down to his offspring!) I am so glad Zenny and this year’s foal are doing so well.

I’m really excited about this cross! this horse is going to be BEAUTIFUL!

Z'isters of Omaha
Tomorrow is a milestone in Thoroughbred history. Eighty years ago on March 24, the great American Triple Crown winner Omaha was foaled from royal breeding. His sire was Gallant Fox, the second Triple Crown winner. His dam was Flambino, also a Grade I winner who ran third in the 1927 Belmont Stakes. His performances in the 1935 Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes were so dazzling that they together led to the formalized usage of the term “Triple Crown” as he became its third winner. He went on to become the only Triple Crown winner to race in England, winning the Queen’s Plate and running second in the Prince of Wales Stakes and the Ascot Gold Cup. The latter performance must have been akin to Zenyatta’s heroic second to Blame in the 2011 Breeder’s Cup Classic, because it was what endeared him most to the Brits. At stud, Omaha was said to have been a failure, yet he was the third generation dam sire to Nijinsky II and three other Kentucky Derby winners. As a young man, Morton Porter accompanied Omaha when he traveled by train from New York to Omaha, Nebraska, his namesake city. From that point, Mr. Porter made it his life’s work to care for Omaha until the great warrior died in his stall at Porter’s farm in 1959. Mr. Porter remains behind, still reminiscing about his old friend, and it is to him we also pay tribute for caring so much for one of the 11. Unlike the other 10, the location of Omaha’s remains is not known. Originally buried at Aksarben race track in Omaha, efforts to find his remains years later, as development encroached, were unsuccessful. Regardless, he still ranks among the greats of the American turf and in our memories as we honor him today.

happy 80 birthday, Omaha. I salute you! The memory of your greatness will always be with us. (sharon, bon 90 miles south of Omaha, Neb)

From what I have read, Omaha is buried at the University of Nebraska Omaha
next to what was referred to as the the Home Economics building. I do not know if this is true but it might help.

Hi Allison….I had read that too…now it seems it was an urban legend…someone in previous discussion said that attempts are being made to locate his exact resting place…seems general locale is known…
He isn’t lost ….just cant be found

Z’isters,
We are still researching the story of Omaha and hope to solve the mystery of where his remains lie. In learning more about this amazing horse, I have become more and more in awe of what he accomplished in his time. To be a Triple Crown winner and be denied Horse of the Year — the only one of the 11 in history — is astonishing to us to even think this could happen. Omaha deserves all our respect and admiration. I invite all of you to learn more about him.
Thank you Allie for this inspiring post.

Thank you for this information. I think it is important to remember the greats of the past… They tie us to the legacy that we know today. Thanks again.

I’m excited that the choice was another stallion from the A.P. Indy sire line. In fact, this is the SAME cross on which ZAZU was bred & she is the most accomplished of those bred along these lines so far, I think.
It will be exciting to see how this prospective baby develops….and will s/he be a grey? I must check to see if Zenny has any recessive genes to produce a grey.
Question: Given Zenny’s colouring & Tapit’s, is there a chance their offspring might be black?
Zenny and 12Z — you both are looking JUST GORGEOUS! Love you, Big Girl and Little Boy.
Stephanie in San Diego (been calm but now pacing with everyone else..)
Or maybe even a roan (The Factor Like). I think if see a Black foal, chances are the color will change over the first couple of years. Tapit is very strong at stampling his grey. Here we all go again…the next 11 months of watching and waiting but this time we get to see the little man grow along with Z’s tummy. :))
NancyConner
That prompts a question I had had: whether Zenyatta will raise this foal or at some point would a nurse mare be used? I don’t know much about nurse mares, other than they exist.
signofthetimes
Nurse mares are used only when mare has no milk.
Z12 will be weaned fro Zenny sometime in August.
He will then go with a group of yearlings to learn
His socialization skills.
Weaning is done as a process, foal is in stall next to
Mom. A chute is built at the back of the stall so they
Let the foal in and out to nurse gradually decreasing
The number of meals from mom in a day. Foal sleeps
Away from mom in next stall, but they can touch nose
And “talk”. One day the foal is moved to another barn.
Both may call to each other briefly but it is over and he
Is on his way to being a strong vibrant racing colt.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
Considering that the little guy gained 61 pounds in two weeks, she is obviously having no trouble feeding him.

The Factor is NOT a roan. Roan is an entirely different color; I have NEVER heard of a true roan thoroughbred. The Factor is a dark gray, and eventually will be the same pale shade as Hansen or Zazu. He is just lightening up more typically. Tapit’s get seem to turn lighter at earlier ages. Remember, TT is a dark gray too.
Also: the only source for the gray color in this mating is Tapit; Zenny is not gray. A gray always has one gray parent. One can look at the pedigree of a gray TB and trace it back in a its thin line through the generations, one parent after another. The gray does not skip a generation. Gray is essentially a disease of the pigment in the hair follicles (to put it simply, so even I can understand it!!) and the horse is still its underlying color and may or may not pass along the gray gene as well.
On a young chestnut that is going gray, it can be a rosey-pinkish shade for a season or two; in fact in Arabians it IS referred to as “rose gray” — but with the dominance of bays and browns in the TB most will be more black-gray without the frosting of red hairs.
@Nancy, Zenny has shown herself to be an exemplary mother, and there is NO reason to put him on a nurse mare. Her sole career now is to be a mother, and she has been a total success in every way.
Victoria Bailey
Grey is a Dominant gene in horses that acts on any other colour. If the foal is born black, bay, or any other colour, it is still likely he could grey out with age. Look at horses like Giacomo from birth ’till present day. As effective as Tapit is at passing on greys, we may just get to see the grey Z in the near future, whether she has the genetics for it or not. =)
signofthetimes
Very true Victoria
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
No, the Zenyatta/Tapit foal cannot be black. Neither has any black ancestors going back many generations. Black is quite rare in Thoroughbreds. Both Z and Tapit carry dominant agouti. There is a 50% chance their foal will be gray. The foal’s base color (whether it grays or not) could be bay, dark bay/brown, or possibly chestnut. Tapit has a copy of the recessive e (chestnut) and has produced chestnut foals. Zenyatta might or might not have it. Both her parents carry e and have produced chestnut offspring, so there is a 2/3 chance that Zenyatta does also.
Based on his progeny, I think Tapit is Gg (heterozygous gray) Ee (black base but carries chestnut) A At (bay agouti but carries brown). Zenyatta is gg (not gray) E? (may carry chestnut) AtAt (brown).
JJ
Great info! Thanks for sharing it. Color genetics is not like mixing paint colors. Grey & dark brown don’t make a lighter brown =:)
Hope others appreciate your post as well…….

I have a true black TB mare. She is a granddaughter of Agassi. They are pretty rare.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
I bet she’s gorgeous!
LoriF
Right. Zen cannot carry the grey gene. If she did, she would be grey, as it is a dominant gene.
So, the foal has a 50/50 chance of being grey.
When born, if he has the signs (such as masking around the eyes), he’s a grey.
Mariah
Wow this is great information! ^^ I really found a good place to gt a little “breeding 101” befoe I go to college.

Without the color tests done on both Zenyatta and Tapit to find out their exact genetic makeup, we really can’t rule out one color or another. We know Tapit is not homozygous for black as he has sired chestnut foals – but does anyone know if he’s actually black-based or if he was chestnut before those white hairs grew in? I’m having a hard time finding bay/brown foals by him out of chestnut mares.
We don’t know if Zenyatta is homozygous for black or not.
We don’t know for sure that either of them is homozygous AA or AtAt. It is worth noting here that while true black is, indeed, fairly rare among thoroughbreds, it is a real pain to actually register a thoroughbred as black even when they truly are. Sunday Silence was registered as dkb/br, or dark bay/brown, but he was a TRUE black. Devil His Due is another one – registered as dkb/br, but look at any pictures of him, he is jet black with no red hairs. Black is not dead in thoroughbreds. Rare? A bit. But with horses being incorrectly registerred as dark bay/brown when they’re really not, it doesn’t help as far as the whole ‘counting the true black thoroughbreds’ thing goes.
50/50 gray, otherwise it’s impossible to tell what color we’ll get.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
You are probably right regarding Tapit’s base color. I can’t find any bays or browns out of chestnut mares either. So he is probably chestnut. He does have a lot of chestnut offspring. I looked for a picture of him as a foal but couldn’t find one. The racing pictures are inconclusive. I found one from 2004 in which his mane looks black, but it could just be the photograph.
I still doubt that Zenyatta carries an a, though. Her dark bay/brown relatives look distinctly brown to me. The odds that both she and Tapit carry it are pretty slim.
Sunday Silence–what a looker!
You might like this picture of Hansen as a foal, pictured with his dam. He was almost white even then, but his mane was orange! (Scroll over the little photo icon.)

LauraJ – I did some googling a few days ago, Zenyatta can’t carry A as in bay, otherwise she’d actually BE bay – it’s dominant over At. Non-agouti can hide, though.. Never know, she could be Ata. Hard to say for sure.
Hansen, oh my! I find him very intriguing. When I first saw pictures of him as a 3yo I thought, ‘Wow, he’s REALLY white for being so young!’ But when I saw that picture of him as a foal, I almost lost it completely! He’s not even a weanling there and he’s almost solid white. Really had me going for a little bit, I thought maybe he was actually a dominant white and was -born- that way, but I really don’t know. There really aren’t any color producers in his pedigree. Then again, the Japanese mare Shirayukihime, dam of Yukichan, was born almost solid white. Sired by the black Sunday Silence, out of a plain bay mare named Wave Wind. Neither Sunday Silence nor Wave Wind seem to have had any other white foals, just the one. That mare went on to have six foals, five of which are solid white.
The near-white Turf Club is out of a bay mare with very little chrome, by a chestnut stallion with very little chrome. Who knows? Maybe Hansen was born with a little more chrome than most..
On the other hand, Dancinginherdreams (also by Tapit) was almost solid white before the age of 3, as well.
Really bizarre.
Janis Comerford
thanks, was wondering about the color of the next foal being Talpit is white.

The gray gene is dominant, not recessive. It only takes one copy of it to make the foal turn white. If this horse is homozygous for the gene, ALL his foals will turn gray. They may be born bay or black but will turn white usually by about 8 years old if my information/memory is correct.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
Tapit is heterozygous. He has gray, bay, brown, and chestnut offspring.

I think of all the pictures of Zenyatta and 12Zenyatta, all of which I have loved, this One so far is my favorite. As far as Tapit the next “date”, I totally trust and respect the Mosse’s in their decision. But will she, Zenyatta, have to travel to Gaisnesway or will he come to her? What stallion would not want to travel for the Queen, Our ZENYATTA????? I love you Zenyatta, 12Zenyatta and all of Team Z. Thank you all for this update.
And still no update for Tasty foaling. Now I am getting very worried for our dear sweet Tasty. I know someone (sorry cant remember at the moment, who) posted a while ago of a mare that went an entire 365 days and did just fine (a little Arabian). I still cant shake this “worry’ for Tasty. I love her so.

Mares always do the traveling. It’s only a half-hour trip, so they may leave 12Z at home.

It is my understanding that horses of this caliber are not actually together with the stallion for fear of injury. They are artificially inseminated. Is this incorrect?
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Leslie S.:
Jockey Club and Racing Industry do not allow anything thing but live cover with TB’s. Quarter Horse Industry, however, does allow artificial insemination. There are other Z’sters that have a lot more knowledge about the industry than I do like Laura J. Maybe she will elaborate further. Hugs, JB
LeeAnne
All Thoroughbreds are conceived by live cover (actual physical breeding) due to the money both for stud fees and betting, the Jockey Club (ruling body of Thoroughbred registration/pedigrees) requires it. There would be too much possibility of fraud or mistake in artificial insemination….

TOO Cute of a picture. I think that choosing Tapit for a sire is a great choice. Tapit’s get are often precocious and tend to be fast. Two good reasons that compliment Zenny’s stamina, durability, and late maturity. Being grey and tending to throw greys is an additional plus in choosing Tapit for me because I do love the greys. It also bodes well that Tapit throws both dirt and turf horses which further opens up other options. Giant’s Causeway, Medaglio D’oro and Tapit were my guesses in the order shown. I’m hoping for a grey filly this time.
Rachael
Obviously, healthy and sound is the most important thing… but I wouldn’t mind a big trapping dapple bay filly. Wouldn’t know who to root for in the 2016 Breeders Cup Classic, 12 Bernardini or 13 Tapit… if only. :)
Great news!
Tapits tend to have longevity. Of his 10 current top performers, 9 are SW. There are 4 4-year-olds, 3 5-year-olds, 2 6-year-olds (including a stallion), and HANSEN!
I’m still on the Gemologist train, but it’s going to be extra hard not to root for Hansen in the Derby now! (Alpha can come, too. That’s my top 3. Union Rags can have fourth. I like him, but there are just so many SOLID contenders this year!)
Celeste/Massachusetts
Exciting news! Love the picture; he is so handsome!! Cannot wait for the announcement of his name!

Dear Zenny and Zenny 12 – What a beautiful picture of the two of you. Your baby is absolutely adorable. I am so excited that you will be bred to Tapit. I kind of thought so after you mentioned that you thought Hansen was “Cute”. I would love for you to have a gray foal — that would be amazing. What a wonderful choice to sire your next foal. Daydreaming while thinking of Zenyatta:
12Z looks just fantastic!!! I get a kick just looking at him! Hope we can get some videos soon as I know he is growing like the proverbial weed. Even at this young age, in some of his pictures where he’s lying down but awake and alert, with those ears pricked, I just know he is going to have the presence and the confidence that his momma has. He looks like a winner!
I’ve been studying and trying to learn as much as I can about looking at pedigrees, what all of that means, but I’m not confident enough to comment on the mating itself. What I do know is that if Team Zenyatta likes this match, then that tells me all I need to know. I still miss Zenyatta on the track….I think the whole racing world misses her, and what I’m hoping with all my might is that one of her offspring (or more) makes it to the track and carries on in the tradition of Queen Z. I’m wishing for healthy foals, strong and durable, like Z, and that we will be seeing “FLASHES OF ZENYATTA” for many years to come. My fondest wish is that, like Pretty Polly, who had a brilliant career and who went on to be one of the most influential mares in history, that one day the Zenyatta line will stamp its impramatur on the sport, just like Pretty Polly. It would be unusual, from what I read, for a successful mare like Z to be able produce, at least in her first crop, GSWs, but, the one thing I do know about Zenyatta is, she is MOST UNUSUAL! If any mare can do it, she can!! Lots to look forward to over the next few years.
NancyConner
Add to that any of Z’s offspring will have the advantage of Team Z to guide their development and career. Ann Maree, your fantasies for the future could be realized with some Luck!

I love those Tapit babies , they are wonderful, this is going to be GOOD!

I also like Tiznow, but think that some time after Tapit, that Mr. and Mrs. Moss might give “Morning Line” a looksee. It will take a while to see if he is a success at stud, but interesting pedigree.

Oh the thought of possibly a grey out of Zenyatta, cuteness overload. Now the waiting game starts all over again.

I’m thrilled about the new Tapit/Zenyatta mating. I love Hansen because I think he’s beautiful (not very scientific) and fast. Now we have a whole year to wait, once again, to see the new baby. At least this time, we know that Z is, as always, good at having foals.
Gloria
Love this close-up picture! Good luck Big Mama Z on your second date! Lucky Tapit!
