The Zenyatta statue will be unveiled in Santa Anita’s Paddock Gardens area at noon (PDT), Saturday September 29. Watch the ceremony live here on Zenyatta.com courtesy of HRTV.
LEGENDARY MARE ZENYATTA TO BE HONORED FOR ALL-TIME WITH LIFE-SIZED STATUE IN SANTA ANITA’S PADDOCK GARDENS AREA, UNVEILING SET FOR SEPTEMBER 29
ARCADIA, Calif. (Sept. 14, 2012)—The legendary Zenyatta, winner of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita and Horse of the Year in 2010, will be honored for all-time by Santa Anita Park as a life-sized statue of the great mare will be unveiled in Santa Anita’s Paddock Gardens area on the first Saturday of Santa Anita’s upcoming Autumn Meet, on Sept. 29.
Additionally, the inaugural Grade I, $250,000 Zenyatta Stakes (formerly the Lady’s Secret), a race won by Zenyatta over three consecutive years from 2008 through 2010, will be run on Sept. 29.
Zenyatta, who at the age of eight is currently enjoying her role as a broodmare at Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky, will be joining two of the greatest horses of all-time, John Henry and Seabiscuit, as her statuary likeness will now join these legends of the American Turf adjacent to the track’s grandstand.
Named after The Police’s blockbuster album “Zenyatta Mondatta,” Zenyatta is owned by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jerry Moss and his wife, Ann.
“Like the song written by Sting and performed by The Police, everything Zenyatta did here will always be magic for the entire Thoroughbred industry,” said Santa Anita President George Haines. “Her win against the boys in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic is considered by many to be the greatest moment in Santa Anita history.”
The incomparable Zenyatta retired with a remarkable 19 wins from 20 career starts and $7,304,580 in earnings. Although she was defeated by a head in her final start, the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic, her stature as one of the sport’s all-time greats remained undiminished as she was voted the Eclipse Award as Horse of the Year for 2010.
“The breadth of her accomplishments at Santa Anita alone is astonishing,” said Haines. “She won a total of seven races here, all stakes and six of them were in Grade I competition. Her story will forever resonate with our fans and we know we’ll have many thousands of people coming here over the years to admire her statue, which will be situated on south side of the Kingsbury Fountain, directly across from John Henry.”
Trained by John Shirreffs and ridden in her final 17 starts by Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, Zenyatta made her third career start on Jan. 13, 2008, winning Santa Anita’s Grade II El Encino Stakes by 1 ¾ lengths under David Flores.
As was the case in her 2009 Classic victory, all nineteen of Zenyatta’s wins came in last-to-first fashion.
After winning the El Encino, Zenyatta’s subsequent Grade I wins at The Great Race Place came in the 2008 & ’09 Lady’s Secret Stakes, the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, the 2009 Classic and the 2010 Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap.
“We’d again like to thank the Mosses for running Zenyatta here and we look forward to welcoming them back as we again honor ‘the big mare’ on Sept. 29,” said Haines.
Sculpted by Nina Kaiser, who also created the statue of John Henry, Zenyatta’s likeness stands at her height of 17.2 hands, and weighs 1,200 pounds, which is approximately what Zenyatta weighed throughout her racing career. Commissioned by Santa Anita, the world-renowned Kaiser worked on the project for more than two years.
Santa Anita’s 2012 Autumn Meet gets underway on Friday, Sept. 28. For more information or to make dining and seating reservations, fans are encouraged to visit www.santaanita.com or call (626) 574-RACE.

Comment about Wise Dan and HOY, did not think about the gelding issue. However, wonder how many geldings have been HOY, John Henry for one??? Good Trivia question.
“He’s a gelding and he’s not going to be a stallion, so we’re not overly concerned with Horse of the Year. It would be nice to get it, but I just want to get him to the races and do a good job with him.”

Information about the EQUINE CECUM; not equivalent to the human appendix;
makes up 15 % of the Equine digestive system and is the location of most colic,
and where food ferments and stays.
Cecum:
This is where your horse varies greatly from you. Your cecum is basically non-existent, while your horse’s makes up 16% of his total digestive anatomy!
The cecum is at the beginning of the large intestine and is a “blind sac” — it only has one opening, so everything has to go back out the same opening it goes in. Feed goes in, spends time being mixed around and digested by the microbes, and exits again into the rest of the large intestine.
This is another place where the horse anatomy makes the digestive tract delicate — if something gets stuck in there, everything gets backed up, and you end up with big problems…usually colic.
In the cecum, microbes ferment and break down the fiber that your horse consumes in his forage. This provides him with important nutrients such as volatile fatty acids and some amino acids that would otherwise be wasted.
During evolution, some mammals developed a symbiotic relationship with microbes — the microbes break down feed that the host (your horse in this case) could not otherwise use, and in return, the microbes get a “safe” place to live inside the host. Since mammals don’t make the enzymes necessary to break down the feeds that the microbes love, the relationship works well.
In the picture above, the cecum is colored yellow. The uncolored part is the colon.
In the picture below, the cecum is green, the colon is orange, the small intestine is yellow, the stomach is red, the rectum is blue, and the anus is brown. The left side is the layout as it is in a live horse, the right side is the intestines spread out so everything is able to be seen.
Colon:
The large and small colon is where your horse reabsorbs most of the water that is present in the digestive tract. This is also where wastes from body functions are secreted in preparation for being passed out of the body.
Microbial fermentation continues along the length of the colon. The colon makes up approximately 45% of the horse’s digestive tract, compared to 17% of yours.
Since the colon is so large, it is another place where the horse anatomy makes the digestive system delicate — there are so many twists and turns that it is easy for it to get kinked or twisted, causing various types of colic.
In the picture below, the colon is colored yellow, and the cecum is the uncolored part
Rectum and Anus:
This is the last part of the horse anatomy in the digestive system. The rectum is the last section of colon that is in the pelvic area, and the anus is the opening at the end of the tract.

A Poem for Anne from Paramount on her Birthday
(October 2, 2012)
Though not many know it,
Anne from Paramount
And I, your humble poet,
Among shared interests count
A passion
For collecting frogs of every fashion.
’Twould be hard to catalog
The many kinds of frog
You’d ’round about
Our homes spot,
Both inside and out–
There’s quite a lot!
Metals ones dot
Our patios and yards,
Paper ones grace our greeting cards
With lines from Hallmark bards,
Plus more you’ll find
At cocktail time:
On napkins, spilled drinks to sop,
And on coasters which feature
These winsome creatures
Already to hop.
We have frogs made of sparkling glass,
They make paper-weights, first class,
And others of glossy ceramic
In poses dynamic
Already to go.
I sent dear Anne a photo
Of a frog all of eight feet tall,
Carved from just one piece of wood,
Oh my!
He formerly in central California stood
And now at a neighbor’s greets passers-by
Here in Santa Paul’.
Another of whom I’m particularly fond
Is no dummy–
He takes his ease,
Lying comfy as you please,
Recumbent upon a flat stone
Where water flowing into my pond
In a small
Waterfall
Refreshingly splashes
O’er his bare resin tummy
While fish swim below
In golden flashes.
He’s not all alone,
For to one side
There’s a metal rendition
Of a frog musician
Who with great pride
Does strive
To play his horn
Like the great Louis Armstrong.
If you’ve met our dear Anne at the track,
You’ll have seen
That there
She loves to wear
T-shirts on her back
Which frogs adorn.
Should you at Anne’s home be,
I suppose
It wouldn’t take very long
Before you see
A golden frog, seated ever so limber
In a yoga pose
With knees akimbo,
Lost in meditation
Most serene—
He’s her Budda-meister!
For calming nerves,
He serves
Better than medication!
Then there is the equine
So fine
Whose career we trace
On Equibase
And root for in each race–
The gelding “Fine as Frog’s Hair!”
So here’s to frogs everywhere
And the people who for them do care!
Happy birthday, Anne, and many “hoppy” returns!

Trina; cute, cute ,cute!! Happy Birthday Anne!! I am a day late of course.
I still hunt for frogs with my grandaughters. When the oldest was three I would do the catching of frogs and some tadpoles they could watch turn into a frog. Now they can catch them. At the end of the day we put them back. They gave me two matching ceramic frogs for my birthday! hugs, Sally B

Happy, happy birthday to Anne, hope you have a special day! Just want to add I also love frogs, have a couple of them on my deck and even a frog fountain. Trina so enjoy your poems, but I have run out of expletives so I’ve coined my own……..Trinalicious, ha, ha.
Good luck to the marvelous Wise Dan in the Shadwell Mile, wish I could be there to root you on……safe trip to all.
Continued prayers for our dear Paynter, hope this is the last treatment you have to endure and you bounce right back brave boy. We love you, and I send hugs to his owners and kisses on your nose.
Just noticed, happy birthday to Casey Phillips too!

@Peggy (N) –Thank you for your continued prayers. Money is improving–walking almost without any noticeable stiffness and eating normally. (“Normally” for him means a lot!) Also, in our current nice weather, they are turned out all day and evening, which is good for circulation. He is still in the smaller paddock so we can doctor him once a day. Will check with the vet today to see if she wants a 3rd round of antibiotics. Thanks to all who have prayed/are praying. We appreciate their being continued until all is finished. Love to all.
Max
Barbara. So happy for Money. Hope that he stays on the road to recovery for you and your daughter.

Peggy (N). News of Orfevre in the Arc. Sounding very good. Camelot will be in with Dettori riding. We will see how he does against tough older horses like your O. He’s never raced against them. No word yet from John Gosden if Great Heavens will race.

I hope the grass does not grow fast…..91/2 centimeters! Talk about grooming a course.
I need a new yard crew!

Ann. 12Z, Crescent Moon Guy and their little band of weanlings could reduce that grass in no time.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Max
I’m glad that Camelot is in there. I think Orfevre can handle him. OOps famous last words. I hope he can anyway.
I have mixed feelings about Frankie Detorri. I like him but, I hope he’s cooling off from using the whip so much.
Go Orfevre………………………………………………………
Max
Peggy(N). I hope that Orfevre wins too. He is one beautiful horse. Also if he wins, he helps to protect Bobby Frankel’s world record from falling to Aidan O’Brien. Any horse who can help with keeping Bobby’s record in Bobby’s name gets my support automatically. Go Orfevre!
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Yes, that’s a major plus to his winning.

Oh my goodness, Miss a day and miss a million posts. So much to catch on from just one day!
Happy belated birthdays Sue Noel and Anne from Paramount. I truly hope your birthdays were everything you wanted them to be. Cant wait to meet you both at BC. Still cant believe I am hearing myself say that? Hope you both had a wonderful day!. Sue, You are an inspiration to me. Just a little bit older that me (nothing intended there, dont take any offence) but you have a horse you love so, Barnaby, and it gives me hope that yes, I can still fulfill my dreams of adopting an OTTB someday. I will not give up on my dream, no matter what my husband say. Bah hum bug, he says they are dangerous and you will get hurt. I say foo-eey, I got hurt last night at work as a nurse, and I am sure it was not as much fun. LOL! Anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUE AND ANNE!! Cant wait to meet you both! Sue, give Barnaby a kiss for me. I was thinking of him as I was grocery shopping last evening and saw some Fuji apples. LOL I swear it is the truth. I am totally obsessed with all these horses. Your Barnaby, Barbaras, Money, and Patis Gus, and many, many others. Some day you will all be hearing about mine, God willing. Love to all.
Darlene Daniels
P.S.
Have not heard anything from Laura in Cincinnati and Margaret in awhile. Anyone know of anything about these two ladies. Both were very good educators and I miss them
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Darlene D; NEVER give up on your dream!!! I once did, and although I may not have one of my own, I now am experiencing the care and love for them through working at the Horse Sanctuary. For the love of the horse. We just love them.

dear sign no we dont get retirement ceremonies for racehorses over here but retired TB’S do parade at some of the big meetings .desert orchid would always be at kempton on boxing day (he won the king george 4 times) I am hoping they will do the same with kauto when he retires hugs sheenaX
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Oh, I sooo hope they let Frankel parade, too.
Hoping that Frankel will TELL Sir Henry and
His owner, he wants to continue his racing
Career and he is not interested in “girls” at this
Time. HA HA !!!!
Max
It would be great if Frankel could race into his 5th year. However there is not much competition and Juddmonte has 300 broodmares alone, not to mention the interest that there would be from other breeders. Frankel will be retired with his maternal family going back generations. There is something to look forward to even if Frankel retires. Frankel has a 2 year brother in training and a yearling sister who have yet to race. Kind is also in foal again to Galileo.
signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
Max,
There is only one Frankel, and as with Barbaro and other champion siblings,
there will NEVER be another Frankel only the hope there will be.
He will give parts of himself to his “children”, but none of them will get
the whole Frankel.
And it is too bad, would love to see him in the ARC !!!
Max
These horses could be better than Frankel. One does not know until it happens. To date all of Kind’s offspring are grade 1 winners.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
The legacy; always exciting to look to the future. Hugs, JB
Max
Desert Orchid was a great jump horse as is Kauto Star. They are treated differently than the flat horses. When Kauto wins, he always gets a parade through the village of Dicheat where Paul Nicholls has his training center. It’s quite an event.
Ann NC
That is so cool, Max.
Growing up, I remember when the local jumpers won at the steeplechase races. Our Hunt club would always host huge celebrations, in their honor.
We would put the winners in the middle paddock and day long celebrations of food, friends and fun would take place. Special hugs and attention were poured over the horse/s.
Even the little tikes had their pictures taken on the winners back. A few beers were also shared!
Max
Ann. When you see these horses on parade, you can tell that they love the attention. Everyone is happy.
signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
Max,
So what do they do with the flat champions????
Long ago some US champions were also paraded at the races they won
a few times. I am particulary thinking of the California star Silky Sullivan,
he was paraded into his 20’s and was bucking and on this toes excited to
be back at the track, even for a few minutes.
Max
Most of the flat champions are stallions. They retire to stud after their careers are over. Jump horses are mostly geldings and are easier to handle in parade conditions. Think of trying to parade Dynaformer. Not really a good idea.
Eveline / Maryland.
Cigar had the most beautiful retirement ceremony in Madison Square Garden in New York City, there was barely a dry eye in the house. I was there that evening. HRTV has an inside information on Cigar ,where they show the ceremony. It’s well worth watching. He was driven through Manhattan in this huge tractor trailer all painted with his picture and racing colors with a police escort. It was well fitting of a champion!
Max
Eveline. That Cigar is the best. I heard about his fatewell. He certainly deserved it.
Ann NC
Eveline, I remember that for Cigar. My brother met him one day on a stop over. That trailer was and still is the best ever!!!!
Horses know when they are appreciated. All we do is clap, for a fine trot in the ring and our lady carries herself with pride. It is so funny.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Love to hear all the info that you have on the Euro horses and customs. Very interesting and fun to know. Thank you. Hugs, JB

Wonder why he would not run in the BCC. I though he was better at the longer distance. ?

It would be much easier to get him ready for the short race than the long one, which requires a lot of conditioning.

signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
Actually Max,
Peggy N gave a description of a visit to Coolmore a couple of posts ago.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Hey Sally,
They do allow visitors, or they did a couple of years back. I visited. I called before I went up there and she told me that a number of there horse were shuttling at that time I forget who all was suppose to be there but several I asked about were gone.
I asked about Giants Causeway and she told me that he was there. So I jumped at the chance to see him She told me he would probablybe the only one I would get to see and I told her that was ok.
Sally most of the other farms I had visited they had someone at the office to escort you around, but she just told me when I got there where to drive to find him. I thought O. K. I didn’t understand her directions real well, but I didget back there to the barns. My brother and I got out and walked around a bit and in a little bit this guy walked up. And he just said you wanna see Giants Causeway and I said yes. We went to the barn he was in.
I think Sign thought this visit was funny and I think it was kinda.
Sally GC was eating lunch. This guy just gave us a little talk about him. He didn’t walk him out or anything… We just basically got to see him I took mints but they didn’t let him have them. and he only got out for a few hours a day. His head was in the feed bucket and I kept calling to him and everytime I would call him he would look around and kick his foot at me. My brother said well at least he’s acknowledging you. Everytime I wouldcall him he would do that. He’s Gorgeous.
I would have stayed a little longer untill he finished eating but I think they were busy that day elsewhere and maybe just give us that brief little visit.
We were going to another farm too. My brother just didn’t think they were outgoing like some of the other farms and he was ready to go so I said OK.
I was just thrilled to get to see him even if for this brief little time. I thought OK GC I’ll seeyou latter.
Sign, Max, I know you all have hear this, Sorry I just thought Sally might like to hear it.
They did let us visit and I was greatful.
Max
Peggy (N). I love hearing this. It never gets old. That GC is a character. Love his footwork.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Yeah, he deffinately heard me talking to him. He was sure enjoying that food. That kick was so cute. I wanna go back and see him again. I hope he always stays accesible to the public. Wish we could see his Dad Storm Cat too. Last I heard they still want allow visitors at Overbrook.

Brice Blanc to ride Mr. Commons in Arroyo Seco, possibly BC Mile
by Paulick Report Staff – Breeders’ Cup | 10.02.2012 |
Making the long drive from Del Mar to Hollywood Park three times in August has paid off for jockey Brice Blanc.
On three separate occasions, Blanc rose early and made the trip up to Hollywood to work the 4-year-old colt, Mr. Commons, for trainer John Shirreffs. Blanc also subbed for regular rider Mike Smith aboard the colt in the Del Mar Mile (gr. IIT), where they finished second.
Blanc’s commitment to work Mr. Commons those three mornings so impressed owner Ian Banwell and Shirreffs that they have stuck with him. He has been named to ride Mr. Commons once again in Saturday’s Arroyo Seco Mile (gr. IIT), and if all goes well, he’ll be aboard for the Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. IT) in November.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Nice, tweet about a thoughtful owner and
John Sherrifs. Mike has gotten so busy flying
Back and forth East to West. Hard work in the
Jockey business pays off, guess in most business.
Terry Crow GP
Brice Blanc, although relatively unknown, is considered to be one of the best grass riders in the business and is certainly familiar with the SA course. A good fit for Mr. Commons.

Dear Max and TC,
Thanks for the clarification about Camelot and
His ride. Great points, I don’t notice as much
With their riding as it is quite different than here
In the US. Great analysis of the riding.
Looking forward to seeing him run, he is a talent,
Young horse.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Not sure many Euro Turf horses do well on the dirt,
So very different. Have read the running on the dirt
Stings the horses feet. Just like our dirt horses are
Not too keen of the turf.
Max
It takes a very special horse who has the technique down to run on all surfaces. These horses are most likely to be found in North America where it is possible to do that kind of surface training. The best horse for all conditions currently is Wise Dan. He’s amazing. Even the Brits are impressed by Dan.
signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
Yes, Wise Dan is a very amazing horse and he sooo loves to run.
And you are right, there is no dirt or much poly other than to “practice”
on. Most of the Euros are trained on different “green” courses so limited opportunity.
Wondered why they gelded him???
signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
Also Max, in addition to technique,
They NEED TO LIKE to run on different surfaces, Shack is a great example, he likes to run fast and the slop is too much work for him to run fast so he “throws a clunker” when the track is sloppy as Dale Romans says.
Some horses are very PICKY about their footing and some are not.
Wise Dan loves to run on ANYTHING.
Terry Crow GP
Wise Dan is an outstanding horse. Apparently has developed since the speculation about him not handling soft turf. He will be a real contender in any BC race the trainer decides to enter him in.
Max
TerryC. You are right. Wise Dan is outstanding. World class horse. He struts so proudly when he wins. Love him.
Max
Your confidence in the talent of Camelot is yet to be fully tested. The 3 year old field in England and Ireland is not seen as particularly strong this year. His campaign for the Triple Crown was not as rigorous as Nijinsky’s. Camelot could have taken the challenge from Cecil to race against Frankel, but like others has avoided him. The Arc is a difficult race and it may answer some questions about him as he will face more experienced horses for the first time. This race is far from a sure thing.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
It seems that there is a big difference in age
And talent/experience in Europe, as the turf varies and the terrain
Varies soo much. So we will have to see, he is one
of the few left to be running in the Arc and the Japanese
Champion is the favorite. However, longshots still
Do show up. Was surprised last year SYT did not do
Better but Adian admitted he was not training him
Correctly. Don’t think many want to run against Frankel
As we have discussed. Would really like to see him
In the Arc, but may be too long for him.
Like TC’s exacta last week.

Dear Max,
Don’t think there are have been many 3 year olds who have won the ARC ?
I remember Freddy Head last year running Galikova, Godi 1/2 sis, and he said
she was running soo good he wanted to give her a chance, but her jockey said it was a long shot for a 3 year old to win. I think she came in 5th, which was not
too bad. Not sure Danedream was the odds on favorite to win last year either.
So hopefully we will all be surprised.
Max
Most winners of the Arc are 3 year olds. The issue is that this year’s 3 year olds do not appear to be as strong as in other years. Camelot could win. This race is very tough to call. The year that he won the Triple Crown Nijinsky lost the Arc. It’s really tough.

Interesting Max,
That Freddy Head and Olivier P would say that about Gadlikova, then.
Terry Crow GP
American horses certainly do not do well in the Arc. I think the highest finish ever was by Tom Rolfe some years ago and he was out of the money.
Max
TerryC. Tom Rolfe. Another great horse who is on both sides of Z’s pedigree. His sire actually won the Arc twice. Ribot in retirement was on loan to Darby Dan, but he developed a rather nasty disposition which meant no return to Europe because of insurance issues. A story is that he loathed the sight of other stallions and would not tolerate them in his presence. Another says they had to move an entire herd of cows before he would relax in his paddock. Parading Ribot through a crowd would be out of the question.

Max-Thanks for the info. That is quite interesting. I am not all that familar with Z’s pedigree.
Max
TerryC. Z has a wonderful pedigree especially on her distaff side. If you are looking for good breeding, it is the dam who brings most of the quality to the table. Roberto, Tom Rolfe, Ribot and many many other greats. Z is unique in many ways but she has impeccible breeding. It is amazing that she sold for only 60k, but then no one would even buy Northern Dancer at sale.

BAFFERT NOW “WORKING FOR ” JUDDMONTE FARM AND THE PRINCE
Juddmonte Farm is a new client, and you worked with Garrett O’Rourke at the Keeneland September Sale to pick out a few yearlings for Prince Khalid. What was your reaction when you were approached to train some horses for him?
I was actually in Nogales, Ariz., visiting my Dad when I got the call from Garrett O’Rourke that Prince Khalid wanted to have horses back in California. My father even said, “Wow, that outfit is big.”
That was a big moment for me, knowing I was going to be part of the powerful Juddmonte team. Working with and getting to know Garrett at Keeneland was a fun experience. He’s a true gentleman and horseman.
