LEGENDARY MARE ZENYATTA TO BE HONORED FOR ALL-TIME WITH LIFE-SIZED STATUE IN SANTA ANITA’S PADDOCK GARDENS AREA, UNVEILING SET FOR SEPTEMBER 29
ARCADIA, Calif. (Sept. 14, 2012)—The legendary Zenyatta, winner of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita and Horse of the Year in 2010, will be honored for all-time by Santa Anita Park as a life-sized statue of the great mare will be unveiled in Santa Anita’s Paddock Gardens area on the first Saturday of Santa Anita’s upcoming Autumn Meet, on Sept. 29.
Additionally, the inaugural Grade I, $250,000 Zenyatta Stakes (formerly the Lady’s Secret), a race won by Zenyatta over three consecutive years from 2008 through 2010, will be run on Sept. 29.
Zenyatta, who at the age of eight is currently enjoying her role as a broodmare at Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky, will be joining two of the greatest horses of all-time, John Henry and Seabiscuit, as her statuary likeness will now join these legends of the American Turf adjacent to the track’s grandstand.
Named after The Police’s blockbuster album “Zenyatta Mondatta,” Zenyatta is owned by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jerry Moss and his wife, Ann.
“Like the song written by Sting and performed by The Police, everything Zenyatta did here will always be magic for the entire Thoroughbred industry,” said Santa Anita President George Haines. “Her win against the boys in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic is considered by many to be the greatest moment in Santa Anita history.”
The incomparable Zenyatta retired with a remarkable 19 wins from 20 career starts and $7,304,580 in earnings. Although she was defeated by a head in her final start, the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic, her stature as one of the sport’s all-time greats remained undiminished as she was voted the Eclipse Award as Horse of the Year for 2010.
“The breadth of her accomplishments at Santa Anita alone is astonishing,” said Haines. “She won a total of seven races here, all stakes and six of them were in Grade I competition. Her story will forever resonate with our fans and we know we’ll have many thousands of people coming here over the years to admire her statue, which will be situated on south side of the Kingsbury Fountain, directly across from John Henry.”
Trained by John Shirreffs and ridden in her final 17 starts by Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, Zenyatta made her third career start on Jan. 13, 2008, winning Santa Anita’s Grade II El Encino Stakes by 1 ¾ lengths under David Flores.
As was the case in her 2009 Classic victory, all nineteen of Zenyatta’s wins came in last-to-first fashion.
After winning the El Encino, Zenyatta’s subsequent Grade I wins at The Great Race Place came in the 2008 & ’09 Lady’s Secret Stakes, the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, the 2009 Classic and the 2010 Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap.
“We’d again like to thank the Mosses for running Zenyatta here and we look forward to welcoming them back as we again honor ‘the big mare’ on Sept. 29,” said Haines.
Sculpted by Nina Kaiser, who also created the statue of John Henry, Zenyatta’s likeness stands at her height of 17.2 hands, and weighs 1,200 pounds, which is approximately what Zenyatta weighed throughout her racing career. Commissioned by Santa Anita, the world-renowned Kaiser worked on the project for more than two years.
Santa Anita’s 2012 Autumn Meet gets underway on Friday, Sept. 28. For more information or to make dining and seating reservations, fans are encouraged to visit www.santaanita.com or call (626) 574-RACE.

Hello Zsters, Enjoy reading your comments. I am glad I was able to see the live stream of the Statue Unveiling.

dear sign there should be news tomorrow about camelot he’s having a exercise gallop and aidan will decide if he runs in the arc he’s keen on ryan moore riding him am not sure if he;s back from injury yet. it was great to see the video of frankel at newmarket he;s such a powerful horseoct 20th is going to be avery emotional day for us racing fans in the uk hugs sheenaX
signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
Great up date on Camelot, love that horse, tooo. Maybe Adian will bring him to the BC,
We have to have some of those wonderful EROS, we only get to see on video or TV.
Oh yes, I am sure for all of the British, Frankel’s last race is going to be sooo very emotional. Is it traditional to do a retirement ceremony like we do here ???
It is just sooo sad, I understand the need to retire him healthy, sound and injury free,
but a couple of more years with these wonderful special stallions really needs to be
thought through for the people who love to see them run.
Here is the US they are all going to stud as 3 year olds and then getting all sorts of complicatons; Dynaformer with the ruptured aortic valve from breeding; too much chest pressure when they breed so often.
Kathy R.
Sign: Didn’t know that breeding so often leads to chest pressure for the stallions – very interesting piece of information!
signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
Yes, we have had a couple of older stallions who have had aortic valve ruptures or heart issues. When they breed they bear down and hold their breath and it increases pressure in their chest so also heart pressure.
Terry Crow GP
I did not care for his ride when the horse was going for the triple crown. What did you think?
signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
Whose ride ???
Max
Sign. Terry is referring to the ride by the young O’Brien in the St. Leger. The British pundits were also critical of the way in which the horse was handled. Others think that Camelot may have been overhyped. On the day Camelot just did not have it. As to the Breeders Cup, Camelot might do well on turf. However the Classic is too much for turf horses. The dirt took down Galileo.
Terry Crow GP
Max-You are correct about what I was questioning. Seems like the rider got his horse bottled up and came free too late. Hard to do in a race of that distance, but he did.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sheena:
I have to liken Frankel’s last race for UK fans to Zenyatta’s last race for us here in the States. There will be tears and he will be missed. But, we’re so lucky we have the videos to view as often as we like. Such a beautiful and talented Boy. Will look forward to his legacy through future colts and fillies. Hugs, JB

There is just SO much going on here – when was the last time that we had 10 pages of over 800 comments? I’ve completely lost track of what I HAVE said or meant to say, but I know for sure that a belated BRAVO! to Karen Gogue is due! What an incredible undertaking Karen, and such a fitting day to make the presentation!! Video or not, we can see from the pictures posted so far what a wonderful gift to Dottie you have created. Thank you SO MUCH for doing this on our behalf. I don’t see how she could miss feeling all the love and appreciation for everything she has done!

Happy Birthday, Ann and Sue!
@Terry Crow – I know how you enjoy giving me a hard time about Kentucky’s football team, but as bad as we are, we do have one thing going for us. Zenyatta! I missed most of the game Saturday night, but several people at work today told me that ESPN went to Lanes End and showed Z in her stall surrounded by UK pompoms and memorabilia. Apparently she’s a Kentucky fan! Who knew?! At least we have one thing to be proud of! LOL

REALLY, they let them in to see her ????
You are right KY is know for its wonderful top of the line best in the US TB’s.

Pati- Can't wait for Breeders' Cup!!
I wrote in to 60 Minutes, and suggested that they visit Zenyatta and Baby at Lanes End. Maybe if enough people write in and suggest it, they will go out there!
Also, just a reminder for those who didn’t do it already, you can go to Secretariat.com and contact them about making Paynter the recipient of the Vox Populi Award for this year! He really deserves it for all he went through, and unknowing, what he did to help people respect the sport and its athletes even more. I already wrote in, and many from the Forum did too, so let’s hurry and get our letters in from the blog too!

Great ideas–thanks, Pati!
Kathy R.
Have just heard Andrew Bensley (Skysportsradio) on some of the internationals: He spoke with Lee Jordan from Racing Victoria) who said the only issue seemed to be with Dermot Weld’s horse Galileo’s Choice who had a slightly elevated temp. but is now fine (not that anyone ever gets much out of Dermot!). Gerry Ryan (owner of Americain) told Andrew that the horse may run in the Caulfield Cup – they think he may not be right up in fitness, Stephanie is in favour of this direction, and since the Caulfield is around 2 weeks before the Melbourne Cup the timing is good. The horse is dappled up, and very, very happy. Charlie Henson (travelling Foreman for Luca Cumani) is happy with the team of four they have brought out this year. Their hope is Mount Athos, who will go straight to the Cup since he likes it fresh. They intend to work on gate speed with the group, as they feel that European horses don’t jump as well as the Australian horses at the start. Since Luca has been bringing horses down for the Cup for around 7 years, he probably thinks he’s due for a win! Cheers!

Thanks so much for all of the birthday wishes!!! I’m still like a kid about my birthday–I love it!!Trina-thanks for reposting that wonderful poem!! It is so perfect and so personal!! I was thinking today that maybe I should bring my little Man O’War statue along to the BC!! I’ll bet he would like that–and Trina, you could see him!!
What a perfect day for my birthday–about 77 degrees, light breeze,Idaho Blue, more and more aspens going gold!! Just got back from feeding Barnaby and Traveller–they seem to be having a very happy day! Sue just called–we are going to dinner and a movie after work. (Tomorrow another friend is taking me out to dinner too!). Sue had a friend visiting in town earlier today who had not ridden since she was a girl. I had given my permission for her to ride Barnaby. She just fell in love with him!!! He loves meeting new people and he charmed her right from the first!! She wasn’t nervous on him at all and he was just a perfect boy. Sue said she had a great seat and did really well and she encouraged her to take up riding again as she is a natural! I just love it when people love HIM–he is such a completely remarkable boy and I love it when folks recognize how special he is!!
I tried the new saddle on Saturday and really liked it–more importantly,Barnaby seemed to like it too! Rita told me today that she has decided not to sell it,but, that I can try it out some more. I called our local tack shop today and the great gal there said she has several light saddles there that I can check out. I told her I wanted something almost as small and light as a jockey’s saddle and she has several. It will be fun to try some out and see which ones work for him. He has very high withers so every saddle doesn’t fit him. I just loved the contact I had with him with the light saddle and he really seemed to like it too. I hope that I can find another one we like as well as Rita’s–it seemed perfect.
I’m taking Friday off to be with Sue when the vet comes to check Traveller out. Hopefully,we’ll get some clues as to what is wrong with her. She seems to be acting and eating normally,so that is a plus!! Will surely let you all know as soon as we know anything!!!
Just love all of the new 12Z photos,he is SO gorgeous!! I,too, love crescent moon guy!!He looks so full of mischief!! And,what a sticking blaze!!I loved the blaze on Life is Sweet’s little one too. Wanted to find out who would buy him at Keeneland, but he was pulled from the sale.
Tonight, after I get home from the movie,I will watch the videos of the unveiling! My computer at work has the sound turned off,so have only seen the still photos> Nina did an INCREDIBLE job!! Can’t wait to see and touch it—can it be only a few weeks to the BC??? I won’t believe it until we hit the parking lot at the track!!! I think it will be a great day of hugging as well as racing!!
Tomorrow, the temperature is supposed to drop almost 20 degrees and tomorrow night it may freeze! I’m not ready to part with my flowers yet!! Out Indian Summer has been one of the best ever and I hope it will last a little longer!!
Karen–Can’t wait to see the scrapbbok videos tonight too!! What an awesome experience after all of your work!! Thank you so much for helping us all show Dottie how much we love and treasure her!!
Hugs and love to all from Still Sunny Sun Valley!!!!!

Paynter Update Tues. Oct. 2 2012 5:00 PM Pacific
A. Zayat tweets 20 minutes ago–Paynter to have Surgery Tomorrow
Paynter update: Paynter arrived at NBC (New Bolton Center) around 3:15 pm, He was greeted by a team of special vets under the leadership of Louise Southwood who is a colitis specialist and an intestine surgeon. They have conducted a thorough and full diagonostics and procedure.
They were impressed by Paynters condition, dr southwood told me “im already in love with him” He was behaving like a gentleman. Bright and courageous,
They were extremely pleased with his feet condition.
The blood work was significantly improved. They were pretty happy with his appetite
.
A team of ultra sound specialists and internal medicine specialists discussed all their findings and found out that theycan help him surgically and the infection and the abscess has been confined to one area in his cecum which in itself is the best news since it is the best possible location to have an abscess of that nature. You would want it in that area. The cecum is the appendix but not vestigial as it is in people which means that surgery would definitely help him and it is in an area where it can be opened up and removed and clean the infection that has been the cause of his fevers.
They also confirmed that the colon has started healing in fact they were happy all in all with most of his intestine and the repair that has been healing in his colon.
After serious and long debated discussions and with consultation with no less than 12 different specialists, I feel extremely comfortable, calm and at peace with myself for giving them my approval and the green light to go ahead and operate on Paynter
.
I feel Paynter has fought a lot of battles, he needs to win the war, Count my word fans. Paynter is a warrior, our warrior and champion will win the war. I ask you for your prayers and prayers and prayers. Please god deliver him a speedy recovery. May we all merit in his strength and courage.
Paynter will UNDERGO surgery tomorrow morning at 9 am. It is expected that the surgery should last around 3 hours and a recovery period after the surgery for an hour and a half.
Please god may I deliver good news for you all tomorrow.. say a prayer

Next thing for me to do: Light a candle and send a prayer to St. Francis to watch over Paynter, too.

Thanks for this, Keta. I have to say that this sounds like a very positive thing, given that they can isolate the tissue that needs to be removed. I will be waiting to hear tomorrow though. Just need to know that this gallant colt’s okay. He’s been such a brave, gutsy warrior. But I’m sure that he’ll be fine, although I’ll be on tenderhooks, like Max. Prayers for our boy…..POWER UP PAYNTER!

In the name of God, our God of Israel, may Michael, God’s angel messenger of compassion watch over your right side.
May Gabriel God’s angel messenger of strength and courage, be on your left. And before you, guiding your path, Uriel, God’s angel of light and behind you, supporting you, stands Raphael, God’s angel of healing.
And over your head, surrounding you, is the presence of the divine.”

Hi Folks:
It sounds like all of you had a wonderful time at Santa Anita Park this past Saturday. I really look forward to seeing the Zenyatta statue on Breeder Cup weekend. Only 3 more weeks!!!! I must admit I wish I could have been there to witness the unveiling.
Thank you again Karen for all your hard work with putting the scrapbooks together for Dottie. My how we miss her.
I had a wonderful time at Belmont Park’s Super Saturday. The race between Stay Thirsty and Flatout was the most exciting race I have seen in awhile. And Royal Delta’s race was spectacular. It was a great day for Bill Mott.

Linda-I must admit that, when I observed the crowd at SA Saturday, I expected Belmont to win the attendance battle easily. I was shocked when I saw the figure. Any explanations as to why in the eastern press?

Zenny,
What an exciting and wonderful tribute to YOU these past few days! We livestreamed the whole event… even on our satellite connection – we were able to see everything live without interruption! (Satellite is all we can get up here in the mountains of NM – but it was extraordinary!)
Thanks to Nina for all of her work and talent. Such an amazing artwork she has accomplished!
Loved…. LOVED… trying to figure out who everyone was that was there. Kept guessing. Such FUN! Of course recognized Nina….and The Mosses… and Dottie- never could see John… should have been looking for the camera he is always behind!
Saw the beautiful Peach Hat… will have to read all of your posts to see who that was! Wish I could know who you all ‘are’
Am looking forward to catching up on all of these posts from the last few days.
Zenny, such a breathtaking event… watching your teal-colored cover unveiling such a beautiful likeness of YOU!
Prayers, as always, for YOU and Your Prince Z and Your new one on the way, and for everyone in your ‘Family’.
Thanks again to Jerry and Ann Moss for sharing YOU in such a special way with all of us.

I am in here late tonight, but saw your post earlier about the Arc. I got the time of the race from that article. I had been looking for the time. 10.25 eastern. Sunday.
Thank you so much. But the bad thing seems its uncertain if anyone here will carry it. Seems so crazy that they will not carry that big race.
Go Orfevre=Show them your A Game boy. Oh my gosh if he does that’s going to be some race.

Judy, yes I am rooting so hard for Orfevre too. I have seen one of his races that he acted like he just wasn’t trying really hard. maybe he was having a bad day. Dear Ann,
Oh my, UR eye’s and expression are soooo gorgeous. So very kind, sexy (hope the mares notice, at least if they get to see his face) and gentle.
