Spring has yet to arrive here, but Hovis has it. A visit with him will cheer us up until spring finally gets to this side of the pond. Happy weekend to all Z fans, and to Z and her boys.

Terry Crow
Hovis made a very funny reference to Tesco. Wonder how he found out about that?
Max
TC. Hovis is up to date on all current events. Needless to say, he’s alarmed by any proximity to lasagna.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Thank you. Love the photo. Sorry Hovis, don’t think you can blend in with the “Yellow Perils”. You’re so handsome, you definitely will stand out. Love and Hugs, JB
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
The yellow desensitization bucket is hilarious!! Another great read. Thanks as always to Sheena via Max for our Friday treat :-)
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Max and Sheena,
Thanks for our weekly visit with Hovis! Always a wonderful way to cap off the week!
Sympathy to him for having to endure the evil shot in the neck — sounds painful.
Hang in there, Hovis!
Hugs

Dear Max.Dramatic start to the festival today Daryl Jacob has been thrown while cantering down for the race, such a change in fortunes ,he’d won the previous race. He says he’s fine has hurt his leg I think.Horse was fine guess something spooked him.Bad luck for Ruby too, he’ll be off for 3 months! had a crashing fall on one of Mullins horses!
Poor Hovis, I’d be careful of the”special stuff” mum has got in her hands but his man sausage cave needs a spring clean!!!Is a perfect day at Cheltenham today nearly 70,000 there.Got my “Arkle”book today Yay!! Neigh Sheena
Max
Sheena. How is the horse after the fall? Hope that he’s okay. His name is highly interesting. As for Ruby, some were already calling for him to be sacked before the accident because of his comments about Our Conor being replaceable. He was also getting death threats and bring accused of being a short man. The racing gods work in very mysterious ways.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Terry.Hovis knows the right kind of people!! Hugs Sheena
Terry Crow
sheena-Are they still telling those jokes about Tesco?
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
OK – Tesco???
Terry Crow
Sandy-Tesco is a type of restaurant in the UK that has been accused of having horse meat in its food. No wonder Hovis is nervous.
Max
TC. Tesco is a chain of supermarkets in the UK. I don’t think that they own restaurants, but I could be wrong. Sheena would know for certain.
Terry Crow
Max-Thank you. I thought that Tesco also served food in their markets.
Max
TC. You were right. Sheena says that they do have restaurants in their supermarkets. I must have always gone to ones without them.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.What a finish to the Gold cup Lord Windermere wins! Trainer Jim Culloty, who used to ride Best Mate. There is a steward’s inquiry though.Silviniaco Conti ran a great race ,the Lord came from nowhere was last all the way round.Hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. I hear that Mullins is considering an appeal? Lots of excitement at the Festival this week. Have to see a video of that race.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
@Terry Crow, GP–you are so right about cable tv. Our bill is outrageous, and we still don’t get all the sport channels we want!
@Carol in Arkansas (pacing)–has the pacing officially begun? Go across the street from Oaklawn and have some pizza for me!
Terry Crow
You know, Barbara, what you say is true. However, I would be somewhat willing to pay a higher fee, not as high as what they are charging, if the commercials would be eliminated. Here is SoCal, however, the cable company is going to charge an extra subscription fee for the sports. I’m switching to Direc TV.
carol in arkansas/PACING
Anyone going to Oaklawn tomorrow?
just a heads up…
yesterday had almost 6,000…twice as many as usual for a thurs
today parking lots full well before noon….
I figure there should be around 50,000 tomorrow…or so….
going to get there real early…
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Have a great time Carol! Will be watching when I can.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max. Mullins and Ruby ended up as top trainer and jockey at the festival again.I wonder who will get to ride The Fly and Quevega at Punchestown.I’m sure Our Conor must have let out a joyful neigh when Ruby fell, know it sounds cruel but then so were his remarks!Mullins is keeping his options open regarding the appeal of course it would have to be held in England.Jim Culloty now belongs to a select group of jockeys who have gone on to training a winner after riding one.there’s Pat Taaffe,Fred Winter,Jonjo O’Neill and Danny Morgan. Yet another horse died Raya Star RIP Last instalment injured a tendon and has been retired and there were many suspensions for overuse of the whip. Daryl Jacob and Ruby are in Gloucester Infirmary.Jt McNamara is able to off the ventilator for 8 to 10 hours at a time now but is still paralysed from the neck down. All in all a dramatic Friday at Prestbury Park! Free the Moose Sheena
Max
Sheena. Did you notice that Abbyssial is a chestnut, and a handsome one at that? He is only 4. His fall was broken by landing on Ruby. It looks like he trotted off okay. Again the racing gods have spoken.
I do not know what Mullins will do. Paul Townsend was injured as well, but he might be okay for the Fly’s next race. AP rides for McManus, doesn’t he? Might have to bring in Sammy, although there are many good Irish jockeys.
Speaking of whips, I did not say anything before, but I did not like the way in which Ruby whipped The Fly in the Irish Hurdle. These horses know what to do, and they do not need excessive whipping. I’m in the camp with EP Taylor. He instructed the jockeys never to whip Northern Dancer. ND hated whips. I’ll bet Moosie feels the same. Free the Moose!
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.Like you I hate to see jockeys mis-using the whip especially on tired horses at the end of a race. For me it would be 3 strikes and you’re out! Our Jockeys made a terrible fuss when the new rules came out over here and the BHA bowed to their demands. The rules in the UK don’t apply in Ireland,I expect they have their own “system”!!!
Yes,McCoy is retained by McManus,it was rather funny how he chose the wrong Mcmanus horses at the festival,I think McCoy is taking a short break,he did have a nasty tumble and carried on riding and his baby son is recovering from cardiac surgery.Free the Moose!Hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Boy, it’s really heating up in the media for old Ruby in the UK. Lots of anger over what he said about Our Conor. Maybe getting immediately “replaced” as a jockey today is not only poetic, but also safer for him to have a vacation from racing for a few months. Those comments are not easily forgotten, especially as he failed to apologize. So far Mullins has not backed him. We will have to see how this goes. Kauto has yet to wish him well after the fall. Doubt Moose will say anything. He’s too close with Sammy or his brother, Willy. They never bother to whip the Moose, as it would be a useless tactic on the head strong Moosie. Free the Moose! Neigh!
Max
Sheena. They haven’t posted the Gold Cup yet, but here is the 2009 win by Kauto. Man, he looks good. The Tank was second and Nipper was fourth. Glory days.
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5AVjbipDpvo
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Sandy. Hovis seems to think he’s going to end up as a burger or lasagna after our horrific horse meat scandal. He never trusts his mum!Hugs Sheena
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Trina explained about Tesco – I was clueless. Hovis should know how much his Mum really loves him – no worries!

Stay warm and cozy. Sweet Baby Dreams. Love You all so much. Hugs, JB
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sheena:
So sad there have been so many horse fatalities and jockey injuries there. Follow your posts to Max. Surprised at Ruby’s insensitivity.
Will be visiting Charlie tomorrow. Love and Hugs, JB, LM, PC, HT, Cap and all the Sweeties.
Max
JudyB. What Sheena said about her reaction to Ruby if he had said those things about Kauto is telling. Kauto is literally a national hero in the UK. He is loved far and wide. He has 16 grade 1 wins, which is pretty darn amazing. John Henry is the only US horse to win that many. I think that jump racing in the UK is more popular with the “average” bloke than flat racing. People know Kauto. Imagine as a parallel the reaction among Z fans if she were casually called “replaceable”? Unthinkable.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
It is astounding that Ruby said what he did. You’re right, it’s like Mikey, Johhny V or Gary S. saying something like that. These legendary jockeys always have praise for our beloved horses; Mikey went so far as to take responsibility for Z’s loss in the 2010 BCC.
It means so much to true fans to know that the horses are loved and cared for by their owners, trainers and riders. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. You’re right. Mike and the others appear to be very different from Ruby. As I recall, Mike cried before the cameras after that race because he felt that he had failed Z. Mike continues to speak very well of Z, and visits her at Lane’s End. Wonderful guy. Both Gary and Uncle Johnny also seem genuinely thrilled for their horses when they win.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Yes, you are correct. Mikey was very emotional after that race. I believe he, JV, GS and other riders truly love horses and understand that they are all unique. I think they respect their strength, power and vulnerabilities. They’re all very classy guys. Love and Hugs, JB
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Judy B.,
Have fun tomorrow when you visit Charlie and Co.!
Give Charlie a hug for me. Hugs to all!!

Dear Marshall:
I will. I’m looking forward to seeing him and all the horses. Monday, St. Paddy’s Day, Hudson will officially be seven years old. I’ll give her a Birthday Hug from you too. Love and Hugs, JB

JudyB. Looking forward to your report of the visit. Always love hearing about those horses, especially the bad boy.

Dear Max. Those, indeed, were the glory days!!It doesn’t feel the same for me anymore.I’m sure in time another great horse will come along,of course there is SS but with his health problems now who knows if he ever recapture his brilliance. Thanks for the wonderful memories. Hugs Sheena.Free the Moose!
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
I’d be glad to come and monitor his heart – I am really good at it :-)
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Judy.I wrote a message last night but forgot to submit it!!!It’s been a week of triumph and disasters,so many injuries and losing Horses.Ruby really made me angry describing horses as “replacable”!It seems many feel as I do, if you don’t love them get out of the game!!!I meant to ask if you received the Nerissa blog I forwarded this week he’s teleported to New Zealand!!Goodnight God bless you LM PC HT Little Captain and all the Sweeties.Love and Hugs SheenaX
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sheena:
I agree with you wholeheartedly. Very surprised at Ruby’s remarks. Thought he had a true love for horses. Yes, I did receive Nissy’s Travel Blog and I did send you a reply. Thank you so much for all the times you think to send his Blogs to me. I really enjoy them. Love and Hugs, JB, LM, PC, HT, Cap and all the Sweeties
Max
Sheena. Know how you feel about anger arising from those comments. And you’re right about loving the horses or moving on. These jockeys need to look after their horses when racing. Horses are not commodities. I’ll never think of Ruby in the same way again. News today is that Bryan Cooper and Ruby are both on the mend. Bryan had a very serious leg fracture. Daryl Jacob will undergo surgery today. He’s got a broken arm, leg and knee. His accident was very strange as it occurred before the race. Port Melo seems to be okay however. Also heard that Adrianna des Mottes and Abbyssial who both fell or stepped on Ruby are fine.
Kauto tweeted that the Gold Cup is incredibly hard to win twice, but he did it. As he also said, humble neigh!
Ann NC
Ruby’s backside needs go have a chat with, The Fly!
Ann NC
Needs to! Oops!
Max
Ann NC. Right on! The horses who fell on or kicked Ruby are stablemates of The Fly. They’re both fine. Neigh!

Hope Lea and Palace Malice continue on into their career and don’t go to stud after this year. Although Lea is 5 so he might not be back next year. After Zenny retired I was hard put to find a fav but then along came Muchie!

Next time he is racing let’s hope that there is not an obvious speed bias with the track.

Dear Peggy and Z Fans:
Thought you would enjoy this article from Bloodhorse; one of the first in a Series called Fastest Horse In The World. This is the story of COSMIC FLASH (Puck). (Can you guess why it caught my eye). Very well done; documenting how not breeding or money, but just plain good luck can result in a quality racehorse and, of course, how much depends on soundness as well.
Peggy, I think this is the same outfit in Ocala (Eisaman Equine) where Gabby was as a two year old?

Dear Max.Yes ,heard about Daryl’s .operation.Certainly was a freak accident.Daryl is one of our quieter jockeys, very emotional unlike some I could mention!McCoy had a nasty fall in the last race and kicked by several horses so he is off today.Have heard Sam and the New One are going for the Aintree meeting.Indeed the Legend is a humble boy!Laura tweeted Ruby came to see him Tuesday to say Hello!! Neigh Sheena Free the Moose!
Max
Sheena. Seems like Kauto is not mentioning anything about Ruby. He wished Big Buck’s a good retirement. Andy Stewart says that he will buy a polo factory for BB. Hope that AP feels better soon. Will have to see how Sam and The New One do. Moosie is strangely silent.
Have you heard anything about Rock A Doodle Do? It looks like he is now jumping?

more lovely two year olds to follow – looking through the OBS april…
Malibu Moon x French Satin, by French Deputy – dam is 1/2 to Lion Heart
U S Ranger x Galileo’s Star, by Lil E Tee – Full brother to Solitary Ranger
Unbridled’s Song x Joke, by Phone Trick – full to Zensational
Candy Ride x Kokadrie, by Coronado’s Quest – 1/2 to Kodiak Kowboy
Super Saver x Meadow Breeze, by Meadowlake – dam is 1/2 to Overanaylze and is a personal favorite of mine. Picture this I was betting on filly Octave in the G1 Matron for two year old fillies, and then I was betting the race after, didn’t check my tickets when I left the window. Later on after the race, in which Octave ran second, I saw this ticket i did not recognize… looking at it and then it hit me that somewhere along the line there had been miscommunication between myself and the lady at the betting window. Meadow Breeze had won that afternoon at odds I believe of 47 to 1 – it turned my piddly $6 bet into $96 dollars… LOL! I will never forget that!
Dunkirk x Midday Runner, by Real Quiet – dam is 1/2 to Ten Most Wanted and second dam produced Cutlass Reality
Yes It’s True x Ambition Unbridled, by Unbridled’s Song – 1/2 to Roman Unbridled
Henrythenavigator x Bubbling Heights, by Darshaan – 1/2 to J’ray

My Pal Charlie x Vibrant, by VIcar – 1/2 to Vicar’s in Trouble
More to come I’m sure….. love this!!!

Tiz, Lots of nice pedigrees in there. I am waiting for the Maggy Hawk filly, full sister to Afleet Alex, to hit the track. She is 2 now and was purchased in the fall by the same woman who bought Plum Pretty and some other classic mares.
Max
Does anyone know the whereabouts of Tasty’s first born? Hope that he is doing well.
Tiz Herself
Can’t find anything recent, but Tasty’s 2012 by Candy Ride sold for $21,000 to Tim & Crystal O’Donohue at the Keeneland September Sale last fall.
Tim O’Donohue has Debt Ceiling who won the 2013 Bashford Manor as a two year old – I believe they also had the runner up in the Canadian Turf behind Reload, a gelding named Mr. Online..
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/79150/debt-ceiling-skims-slop-to-win-bashford-manor
Tasty should have a yearling by Unbridled’s Song and I thought I heard she was bred or going to to be bred to Union Rags at some point, that’d be a nice baby :-)
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max and TH:
I have not been able to find anything recent on TT’s Candy Ride foal either.
I do remember reading, sadly, that her Unbridled Song foal had died. Didn’t say how. I think you are correct, she was in foal to UR; due in 2014. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Max. Mullins has decided not to appeal wise man! BB is a lucky horse a polo factory!!!I think Moosie was annoyed he couldn’t be at the Festival!!!missed the party in the country!Have’nt heard anything about Rock-A- Doodle- Do. Midlands National today, Noel Fehily has had a treble at Uttoxeter.Hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Agree with you. Wise decision by Mullins. Second is not so bad in the Gold Cup. There is always next year. The Ruby story however is not over. Now his father is quoted in the Mail as calling England “a funny country” where they know the names of horses who were killed by London bombs, but not their riders. Whoa! Maybe it’s time for the Walsh family to quit with these interviews? Good results at Uttoxeter. I think that Mullins has some runners there?
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Max
I’ve found me another Grand Ole Chestnut that i’m really liking lots. Kentucky Derby….I’m hoping. Its Ring Weekend, and another Gelding……………Wow is he beautiful and I thought he did really great in the Tampa Bay Derby. Son of Tapit, and you just have to love that bloodline. Have you noticed him? He has 50 points. I think they may run him again before the Derby. Wonder if he could make it in with just the 50.

Peggy (N). 50 looks like a lock at this point. He just has to stay healthy. Motion is a good trainer. Choosing a grand ole chestnut gelding is a very good idea. If he stays healthy, he’ll race longer than a colt. It would be great if he were another like Dan.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Max
That would sure be wonderful if we could have another one that could run as long as Danny

Dear Max, Sheena, Ann, Marshall and Z Fans:
Just got back from the farm. It was 57 degrees and sunny, but the ground in the ring was all muddy and mucky. Not a good surface for riding. So just visited with Deb, Amanda, Angela and the horses. Charlie and his paddock mates are no longer wearing blankets, so there has been peace in the paddock; no reprimands for the Blanket Bandit. He’s looking great.
Hudson, of course, The Diva, is still wearing her blanket with her slicker underneath. Both Hudson and Charlie enjoyed their treats and I will link some photos that I took today. Deb gave Hudson a trim on her forelock and mane, so she no longer has that Veronica Lake look over her eye. You can see how she is fussed over by her new Moms. She loves every minute of it.
Gave Hudson Birthday Hugs from you and gave Charlie a big kiss on his beautiful nose. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Max. Oh, The Walsh family are certainly getting into trouble over Ruby’s comments, silly boy as Captain Mannering of “Dad’s Army” would say. No wonder an Irishman would mention the dreadful Hyde Park bombing in 1982.I’ll never forget the sight of those poor dead horses and Sefton who became a national treasure.I couldn’t believe the Irish could involve these innocent creatures in their war on the UK mainland. Is quite true though, we do tend to recall horses who have won races rather than the jockeys.Ruby has returned home and Daryl is recovering from his op.Yes, we do have a restaurant in our Tesco.Everything is quiet on the horsemeat scare these days until the next time maybe??Free the Moose! Sheena.
Max
Sheena. Did not realize that that was the allusion. I thought that he was talking about WWII. Therefore it’s much worse than I had first thought. You Brits have nothing to explain in relation to the love of animals, especially horses. If that is a national characteristic, it’s a good one. I read that there is a new cat at Churchill’s country home. He wrote it into his will that an orange cat with white paws and chest should always be in residence at Chartwell. The new one is a rescue cat who has found a very nice home. Thought that you would appreciate that tidbit.

There are several races coming up which have a point total of 100 to the winner and fifty to second place. He still has a chance.
