Happy Friday!
We are proud to announce that, as of today, Zenyatta is confirmed thirty-seven days in foal.
She was bred earlier this year to the Claiborne Farm stallion War Front. Zenyatta was examined by Dr. Holder this week, and checks out to be happily in foal and in excellent health!
Wishing sunny weather and a happy Father’s Day everyone this weekend!

Wonderful news!! Congrats all around!

This should be a great foal. Can’t wait to follow its career.
Janya
Jennifer,
What fantasy world do you live in where most race horses get better care than people? bc the ones I see come back underfed, abandoned, having had zero training on being a solid equine citizen outside the track, and valued only as long as they produce, and sometime not even well bred.. And in my book that certainly does NOT constitute being treated better than people. Lets not get ahead of ourselves here and remember that Z and those like her DO NOT, BY ANY means represent the existence of 95% of race horses. This is how racing royalty lives, NOT your average race horse.
Sorry for the rant….. But as some one who spends a lot of time working with former race horse, I find that beyond insulting and ignorant. Please do some research on the average race horse.
Wishing Z a healthy pregnancy.
Jennifer
Do you work with race horses? I do! Everyday. And believe me I know. I also worked for an equine vet at the track for six years. They get cared for better that anything I have ever seen. i have two kids of my own, and my race horses are taken care of just as good or better than my own kids
Jennifer
I train them every day.
Teresa
Janya,
You just described ALL horses. I can’t tell you how many QH halter horses get bred every year, don’t make the cut, don’t get the right training and then they’re dumped to become someone else’s problem. I could say the same thing about Arabs, Saddlebreds and Walkers, anything with spots or unique colors, and bless the poor warmbloods that get crossed to make a new kind of “sport horse.” Don’t even get me started on the backyard breeders!! Every industry has it’s bad guys. I didn’t work on the track long, but every trainer I met was fantastic (maybe a little know-it-all, but what trainer isn’t) and the horses were well cared for. The ones I saw were “skinny” because they were in shape! None of the horses I saw were lower than a BCS 4/9, they were well-muscled and shiny and happy and healthy.
Jennifer
Teresa,
Amen sister. Very well put.
Barbara
So many are so ignorant about horses, and what may become of them in the future. Backyard breeds are awful. They may love their mare but they do not show consideration to the market. Some breeders only breed for color, denouncing the sorrel foal. Not realizing a palomino is a sorrel with a cream gene. No color is better than another. If these facebookers would just research what they are talking about and get off their tush, perhaps the backyard breeders will be run out of town.
Amanda
Congratulations to All! As long as the mare stays healthy, happy, gains weight after foaling, there is no reason for her to not have foals year after year. Horses in the wild have a near 100% conception rate – which means they have foals every year. Her window of opportunity for high quality foals passes every year she gets older. As it stands, she is just reaching the broodmare “middle age” of 10 years. She may have foals into her teens and have to stop, she may have foals into her 20’s and top. As it stands, soon enough they will find they have to skip seasons to allow her to gain her condition back. This mare is cared for like a Queen – some people can’t even claim to be as well cared for! At the end of the day, these horses are a business. Having these foals sell for great money at venues like Keenland keeps the sport, the farm, and the tradition alive. In a culture that is distancing itself from animal husbandry and more toward offices and technology, be thankful that those with the disposable income can keep the beautiful land, buildings, horses, and spirit alive and well.

Thanks for sending this out. Funny thing, I have seen a lot of War Front’s progeny race live, but never had this pleasure with Zenyatta. always watched her races on TV or video. He has a lot of classy progeny.

Yea !!!! The more Zenyattas in the world. A better world. She has so much to offer and teach her foals. My New 5th Graders will follow her again. Thank you Lane’s End for sharing her Fantastic news. If she was my mare I would be breeding her too. I just watched one of her races the other day and kept thinking how she can pass her talents on to her babies. God Bless Zenyatta, Cosmic One, Z13 and the new pregnancy. Love, Shari XXXOOO

Congratulations!! Such happy, happy news! I know that Queen Zenyatta will love baby number three just as much as her first two boys, as we all will!
Thank you so much for sharing this fantastic news. God Bless the Queen, her boys and the new baby on the way!

LOVE IT!! So excited to hear that she’s pregnant again and the baby should totally be named World War Z!! It’s too perfect. :)
Also, I’m sick of hearing people complain about how soon she’s being rebred. This is how the horse industry (and the horses themselves, actually) works! Get over it!!
Ann Mitchell Adam
LOL!! So laughing at the comments about Zen should do other things in her life and develop her mind in other ways! She is obviously happy. She IS a horse! She is safe and well cared for . . . how cushy a life she has, much easier then the mustangs in the wild and being pursued by natural predators AND mankind.
Especially Horses / So Cal
I wonder if she’s read All Quiet on the Western Front. That should really be mind stimulating.
Zenyen
Ann,
Honestly I look at those comments not so much as “Zenyatta should do other things with her life for HER” but rather “Put her back on display for me, me, ME!”

To Ann Mitchell: Loved your comments! Made me laugh and helped to lighten things up a big!

Congratulations Zenyatta, Team Z and War Front!!
Best of luck for another happy, uneventful pregnancy and little one to teach next year. I thought you had that dappled glow of motherhood about you Big Z!!

HeidiK Vallejo,Ca (In Awe)
First and for most. Congrats Zenny and War Front! Happy that we got the news from the Team since so many rumors were flying around.
Now, after reading the happy announcement, I read through 4 pages of rants. I’m going to try and be polite here but, what is wrong with you people? Last year, it was the same thing: “Give her a year off, don’t make her a baby machine or a cash cow etc”..
You’re obviously ignorant when it comes to breeding, it doesn’t matter if it’s a racehorse, a show horse or a back yard pet. Typically, these brood mares love to have babies. For those saying that she’s too old, WHAT?? She’s a healthy, viable mare and she’s young not old for a BroodMare! For crying out loud, this is only going to be her 3rd foal! Do you really think that the Moss’s are in this for profit? Do you really think that any of her foals will see the sales ring? For those saying that it’s abuse, maybe you haven’t seen her home? Her staff, her owners, her vets etc? She lives in Royalty and treated like the Queen she is and so are her colts and every other horse at Lane’s End!
As long as Zenyatta is happy, healthy and relishing in her new role as a Brood Mare, why not breed her every year? There’s no reason not too!
Believe me, the Moss’s would not put their baby girl in harms way.
So, those that have been ranting and being negative, that’s like slapping the Moss’s in the face and that is dis-respectful for everything that they have and continue to give us, fans.
Ales Bowdoin
Hi Heidi, I just posted and saw that there have been “negative” comments made. I have not read any yet and have decided not to. I want POSITIVE energy here!! I am so pleased she is in foal to War Front. He was a Great Race Horse and is throwing really good babies!! HUGS

HeidiK,
I’m in total agreement. I believe it’s best to ignore all of it BUT I had to comment on it too. I’m going to try harder to ignore them.
I only hope that Ann and Jerry don’t read some of their gibberish.
Criticism abounds on blogs and facebook on all phases of Thoroughbred racing and breeding. Then there’s criticism of the foals and their conformation etc.!!
Best to just ignore them.

You go, Heidi!! I, too, get so tired at the unmitigated gall of some people who are so unhappy themselves, they run around spreading their ignorance and stupidity, and their unhappiness on others. Most of the time I can tune them out, but our Zenyatta community is very important to me, and I don’t think the blog is the appropriate place to get on a soap box. Those that have an agenda need to take it some place else! JMHO

Dear All, you will remember that little Fredrick needed a stepmom when Faith transitioned to the Rainbow Bridge two days ago. Poka “stepped up” to be Freddy’s new mom. Here’s an update from Penny Crosby about how well things are going for them. High hoof!
Skip Over Trouble Equine Rescue June 14, 2013
Freddy is being mischievous and driving Poka crazy. I needed something to laugh about, and boy did I get it.. We have a very long drive way and Poka decided to go down it to the end and Freddy didn’t really want to go, but he decided he better. He starts after Poka then turns around and starts to head back, he looks and sees Poka is ignoring him and keeps going…so back he goes to be with Poka..The next thing I see is Freddy acting like a race horse running as fast as he can back towards me and the other horses in their pens. Poka now is upset (she has been trying to “protect” him from the other horses all day…LOL) she starts out trotting, then starts running when she sees Freddy is ignoring her. She gets between him and the girls’ pen and pins her ears at them…Freddy is like ha ha!! Brat Freddy!!

Remember the video Coz getting his feet trimmed for the first time.
The foaling videos of both foals.

Alex, I so agree with your observation on Positive Energy.
I just watched an interview with Ahmed Zayat on TVG discussing Paynter.

I just love Zen and I am happy for her and wish her all the best, just don’t want to see her breed to death. please.

What would you rather see her do?
Waste away in a field doing nothing but shuffling between her paddock and the barn?
That is pretty much the routine of an ‘open’ broodmare when they miss a year.

And let’s not forget that an open broodmare can become very upset when the foals start appearing in fields nearby and she hasn’t got one of her own!

War Front is a top commercial sire right now so getting Z in for breeding was a coup! When it comes time to name the progeny, I sure hope they do the sire and Z justice by including part of WF’s sire, Danzig in the naming of the Z’s future foal: how about ZenZig or Front Street or Frontline or Peace Treaty…just putting it out there…names are unisex.
May Z’s pregnancy be healthy and uneventful!
Unreal
I am not going to pretend to know anything about breeding as most of you obviously do. So when we voice our own opinion you guys are rude and let us know how dumb we are!!! So her foals will never see a sales ring!! Yea right!! If breeding all these horses is absolutely the best thing then why do you guys get in a tizzy about rescuing them. from slaughter.. Obviously there owners thought breeding was great also. I for one think it is crappy but then I don’t want all that backlash since I do believe we are allowed to voice our opinion. Maybe if you guys saw how many dogs are put down along with other animals then perhaps you guys might believe in controlled breeding. It amazes how many people on this site wear the rose colored glasses. I am not negative I see things black and white, right or wrong!!!

I am a long-time animal rescuer. I rescued and placed over 1,000 dogs, all either spayed or neutered. My own cats and dogs are all “fixed.” Through Equi-Army and other groups I work hard to stop horse slaughter in North America. I, and many others who post here, contribute to many horse rescue groups every month. We can see the difference between the Mosses’ breeding Zenyatta, the horse of our lifetime, and careless over-breeding by irresponsible owners. We applaud the former and deplore the latter. Sincerely yours, Trina Nagele

lindal and Trina — Well said!
“Unreal”, most of us probably do believe in “controlled breeding” — we support attempts to educate people, so they will not simply breed because “they can”. Rescues are already overwhelmed with unwanted, abandoned horses. No one in their right mind wants more of that! But Zenyatta and her owners are a far cry from that — they are not irresponsible in their care! Opinions are free, yes, but if you really want to communicate with Zenyatta-lovers on this site, then please rethink your attitude, which comes across as already-hostile.
Pati-Paynter is BACK BABY!
Our SHERR barn is an example of that. We love Liddy, Champ, and Mia, but they were products of irresponsible breeding or broodmare foals. Zenyatta’s babies will never arrive to a place like SHERR in horrible conditions (as much of a heaven as it is for horses who now live here). They will see beautiful places like Lanes End, Three Chimneys, and Claiborne. When they are done with the stud life, or are gelded for any reason, they will see Old Friends and they will look like the stars they are. With their mother in the public eye as much as she is; they will also acquire that spot light. People raised a panic about foul play when we didn’t get an update about Z and Z13 for a month, so imagine the public outrage if we didn’t get an update about one of her foals for a few weeks? Riots in the streets.
Terri Z
You are 100% right Trina.
It’s sad that there are so many negative comments on a horse who is selectively bred; breeding only the best to the best for a top level thoroughbred. Zenyatta’s progeny will be well taken care of.
Ales Bowdoin
ALSO BRAVO TRINA, WELL SAID!
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Trina, you are absolutely right. Those of us involved in rescue would be the first to question if Zenny were just a backyard-breeding horse. But she clearly relishes her job, and she is adored by all. And many of us will be keeping an eye on her foals because we love her and her connections. All horses should be so loved.
Ann Maree / Tennessee
Trina, you do the work of angels. You are a ray of sunshine! Hugs!!
Casey
BRAVA TRINA!!!!!!
Pati-Paynter is BACK BABY!
We are only repeating what has been establish in previous posts. Sorry, but the world is not black and white. It never has been and it never will be. There are shades of grey all throughout life.
Fact of the matter is that people are refusing to acknowledge something that has already been established by the experts who are around Zenyatta all day, everyday. We only see pictures and the occasional video every few weeks. You cannot possibly determine what is best for Zenyatta through a few pictures and the occasional video. No two mares are alike and just because one mare did bad in rebreeding doesn’t mean that it will also apply to Zenyatta. That is also a fact. We are stating something already established by the Mosses (As they breed to race, not to sell. Also established earlier.) and people still insist on stating otherwise.
The difference between an educated opinion and uneducated babble is that those who cracked open a book about horse breeding know that Zenyatta is perfectly safe being bred back, and that a human and horse reproductive cycle cannot be compared.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park

It is the height of rudeness and hubris to come onto an owner’s blog where they spend their time and money keeping Zenny’s fans informed and try to lecture them on what they “should” and “should not” do. Sharing their precious Z is something they do willingly and lovingly. Please go somewhere else to gripe. This is not the place. The Forum is wide open and it is filled with all kinds of “opinions” there by more like you who get puffed up with their own importance and lecture others. Please hold your negative opinions for a more appropriate venue.

I am a totally newbie for sure. Got a big interest since I saw Zenyatta for the first time, before being retired. I have learned so much through the Moss’s, John, Dottie and everyone at Lands End and the entire Team Zenyatta.
I don’t know about breeding, hard enough to understand racing sometimes, so much to learn.
I am sure that everyone sees the negative things being said about breeding her to soon. I know nothing on that, but am learning from the people here.
I am sure, more than sure that Ann and Jerry have Zenyatta’s interest in heart first and foremost. The entire Team at Lands End would never do anything to harm her or put her at risk in anyway shape or form.
Just look at the way they let us into the lives and Zenyatta and her colts. How many owners do what they do for us, the Fans? I am so grateful each time I read a post or see pictures of Zenyatta and her colts. Even Mike Smith visits, how many jockeys take the time out to visit there rides.
I say in closing, Congratulations Queen Zenyatta, Ann, Jerry and Team Zenyatta.
Love and Hugs to Zenyatta and her colts.

Ann Maree / Tennessee
Trina, didn’t you love when Vic Stauffer got choked up? He could hardly speak, he was so moved by Paynter’s performance. As we all were, for many of us went through each and every painful step of his illnesses, and then his slow recovery. It seemed at first that when one thing was cleared up, something else popped up. He really turned the corner when they discovered the abscess on his colon and removed it, He just seemed to blossom after that, gaining weight. I remember Mr, Z talking about the consistency of Paynter’s poop! Boy, I never thought I could be so interested in a horse’s manure! And it was a tremendously gratifying experience being a part of the public outcry when Paynter’s name was left off the Secretariat Vox Populi nominations. Even Steve Haskin and Brian Zipse helped spread the word at the oversight. What was amazing to me was that the news spread like wildfire all over the internet, as people were upset that Paynter wasn’t on the ballot. Penny immediately acknowledged their error and issued a statement that Paynter’s name would be added, All of this occurred within one 24-hour period. The power of the social media was huge. And, then, when it was announced that Paynter had won the award, the response was once again immediate. I think winning the NTRA “Moment of the Year” was likely influenced by the groundswell of support for our brave boy for the VP award. Like the song in the movie, Secretariat, I felt like singing “Oh, Happy Day”! Hugs!

The first time I watched the replay of Paynter’s race, I missed Vic Stauffer’s getting choked up at the end. He could hardly speak he was so moved. Made me cry from sheer joy and happiness. It was wonderful to be a part of thousands who followed every step of his illnesses and his recovery, to see this brave boy healthy and vibrant once again. He obviously relished being back on the track as he just bounded out of the gate and never looked back. Now, that was a happy horse! Whatever he wants to give us, that will be enough.
