Happy Friday!
We are proud to announce that, as of today, Zenyatta is confirmed thirty-seven days in foal.
She was bred earlier this year to the Claiborne Farm stallion War Front. Zenyatta was examined by Dr. Holder this week, and checks out to be happily in foal and in excellent health!
Wishing sunny weather and a happy Father’s Day everyone this weekend!

Yes, I am really going to miss seeing Orfevre. I hope Animal Kingdom is ok after the race. Wonder if he was just too tired after all he’s done. With all his globetrotting too.

Sheena, i read an article by the Japanese and they said that Orfevre was the majority fan favorite that they wanted to see in the upcoming race. They went on to say that they were a little surprised that he was the favorite. They took a Poll. Orfevre was the favorite. He’s sure my favorite

I am missing so much but I have no energy left attempting to repair fences again and ran a third wire to the fence for Sirs new pasture. Frito keeps breaking it down in a small area. My BFF suggested a battery operated electrical fence. I do not know whether the horse sanctuary will want it or afford it. I have been determined to have Sir enjoy what a number of us put up! So with feeding, cleaning, and fencing, wow 3 and a half hours of straight work is more than I am used to. I say it is all for the love of the horses. It is!! But, Zenyatta awakened in me such desire to want to be around them, to care, to love, and that is all good! I just wish I could spend a day taking care of my greatest love, Zenyatta before I get to old!!! My body is acking right now!! So much for arthritis, that bugger!
Hope all is well

Sheena. Read the blog. He calls Moosie “mercurical” but goes on to say that Moose ran a 3 mile race last November so that the Queen Alex should just suit him. Apparently Moose has been getting some extra special training and will have an escort with him to the starting gate. Hope that it works. Run Moose run.

Terry Crow, Just getting back to you about your UK football joke. I was not offended. It is a well known fact that we are not very good in football. Life is too short to take things like that personally. And the truth is the truth.
Terry Crow
Thanks, shirlee. I never intend for any of my jokes to offend anyone. I will post sort of a talking horse joke later, but here is an old chestnut that I told at a friend’s retirement party about 20 years ago and I am sure it is older than that. I switched the puchline so that it was his kid at the end. A teacher was trying to teach her class about various types of meat. So, each day she brought in a sample for the kids to eat and try to guess what it was. The children all successfully identified beef, chicken and turkey, The teacher then decided to bring in some venison. After trying the meat, none of the children could identify it. “I’ll give you a hint,” the teacher said, “It is what your mother sometimes calls your father.” A little boy then jumped out of his seat and screamed “Don’t eat it! It’s jackass!.”

Animal Kingdom kept waiting for the turn for home so he could make his move and it never came. He must have thought those racers were crazy!
patricia in far northern California
According to one source, Animal Kingdom was acting studdish in the parade ring because there was a filly [Elusive Kate?] in the ring for the same race; then in the race he was very rank and since he had no turns to use for tucking in behind horses, all he saw was the open course ahead of him and he used up all his energy in the first part. Unfortunate, but he’s still a wonderful horse, and as one of the owners tweeted, “He owes us nothing.” My friend who was there said he was a gorgeous horse to look at. I hope he has a long and very successful stud career. He’s still done things most other horses have not.

Dear Louise,
I can’t wait to see the little one’s too. His Dad Leroi has one of the most beautiful little filly’s I have ever seen in Florida. She’s just a little over one. I think she has a different mother though than Animal Kingdom’s. Have not seen her mother but she sure looks like Leroi and Animal Kingdom.
There sure are some beautiful horses coming from this family.

I am not a big fan of Beyer numbers. When Beyer assigned a higher number to the horse that ran second in a race than he gave the winner, I started to disregard them. You will find that higher Beyer numbers are assigned to a horse that goes wire-to-wire on an uncontested lead, conditions that may or not apply to the current race you are handicapping.

Let us always remember Animal Kingdom is one of our Kentucky Derby winners and no one can take that away from him. He deserves many blessings for his next career. We can never forget his accomplishments, as those before him may have suffered ie. Ferdinand, when they didn’t pan out like people wanted. Looking forward to AK’s babies.
Louise Castello
I will never forget Animal Kingdom! He is such a great horse and such a handsome boy. I’m so, so proud of him!
Terry Crow
Ferdinand should never be forgotten. The ride Shoemaker gave him in the 1986 Kentucky Derby was one of the best of all-time, if not THE best.
Max
TC. Here is the video of Ferdinand winning the Derby. You were right about Shoe. Ferdinand sure looks like Nijinsky. Very sad how it all ended for him
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FHnHQQjEgY&feature=youtube_gdata_player
.
Terry Crow
Max-Thank you so much for posting this. The isolated replay shows just how great a ride this was. Mr. Shoemaker was very nice to me when I was was a young lad and I will never forget him. Funny comment by Al Michaels about you couldn’t get 17-1 on Shoemaker a few years ago even if he was riding Mr. Ed. Good to see and hear Jim McKay again. Just makes the end result that much sadder for Ferdinand.
Terry Crow
Animal Kingdom has nothing to be ashamed of. How many European horses have come to run in the Kentucky Derby and flopped?
Max
TC. Every single one so far.

todays insight:
Things Our Hearts Forget
Hello, You…
The one beginning your week,
maybe thinking about your hurts,
hoping no one wil notice until you are better.
Lean in close,
You are already good enough.
You don’t have to be better.
Not because you’re perfect
(because none of us are)
but because you’re loved
by a God who is committed to
“completing the good work He started in you.”
And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. Philippians 1:6

I will never, ever catch up here – miss a couple of days and you wind up woefully behind. Had a super (if way too short) trip to Kentucky to see Debbie G and visit a couple of farms. I know that Debbie posted earlier about our seeing War Front and Blame as well as Eddington and Seeking the Gold at Claiborne. Our guide there was most accommodating and went out of his way to adjust to unusual circumstances. There had been a serious storm the night before so the horses had been brought in, and their schedules were all askew. The stallions should have been in their stalls but instead were out grazing in their paddocks. He made sure that we saw the ones we most wanted to see.
I saw Tiznow and Speightstown at Winstar, but my knees refused to go any farther at that point so I missed out on Bodemeister and some of the others. When we pulled into what turned out to be the wrong parking lot at Winstar, we saw a car with Colorado plates, and upon further investigation found Dawn Conrad and Shari Voltz! Unfortunately, they were just leaving, and we had an appointment to keep so we could only have a brief chat.
We HAD to drive by Lane’s End so that we could say that we breathed the same air as Zenny, and as Debbie said, got a great surprise when Tasty T was close enough to the road to be recognizable. I’m sure that she came over to the fence because she heard us calling her name :-)
I’m trying to figure out a way to get some photos posted (maybe Pati can help me out here as I have no internet site myself to use). It was SO nice to see Debbie again, and she was the kindest, most fun, best ever tour guide!!
Woo Hoo to Paynter our miracle horse for a great win on Saturday. And thanks to Casey for sharing her wonderful pictures!!!!
Another Woo Hoo to Ft. Larned – I know that Darlene will be thrilled (and we were so disappointed that you weren’t able to join us in Kentucky)
And for Sheena, a third Woo Hoo to Justin Rose. I’m a big “Phil fan,” but Justin was the better player on Sunday.
Belated Happy Father’s Day to Terry and all of the human dads as well as Bernie, Tapit, and our latest “dad to be” War Front. Two great wins by his sons at Ascot!
Belated Happy Birthday to Liddy and Sharon in Seattle – wonderful poems from Trina!
Thanks to Sue F for the update and picture of little Freddie and to Ann for the great article on the Shire horses (interesting how they had humans rather than ponies escorting them to the starting area).
Whew! Lots going on here – can’t wait to see the promised new pictures later in the week.

Dear Sandy
So glad you had a good trip. I agree with lots. I think at the farm how good of a tour you have depends on who is taking you around.
I had a really good guide at Winstar. He was just great. He was going to take me to see some of the babies. But he needed the truck and I would have had to have waited a good while as the guy that had left in the truck was taking some clients around. I waited for a while but then I told him I would come back again.
You know the babies are usually off limits, but this guy was going to carry us to see some. Great Guy.

Terry Crow
Sandy-Glad you had a good time in Kentucky. Winstar is a great place and they are very fan friendly, as is Claiborne. I have been informed by Ann in NC that tomorrow’s National Hollerin’ Day has been reset for September 14, so be advised. We will celebrate on the blog at the proper time. As promised, this is sort of a talking horse joke. A very devout cowboy lost his favorite Bible when he was mending fences on the range. Three weeks later, a horse walked up to him carrying the Bible in his mouth. The cowboy couldn’t believe what he saw. He took the precious book out of the horse’s mouth and exclaimed at the top of his voice “It’s a miracle!” “Not really,” said the horse. “Your name is written inside the cover.”
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Actually Winstar was not quite as “fan friendly” as Claiborne had been (maybe it was just the young, inexperienced, way too soft-spoken tour guide), and it was just SO big! It just killed me to have to bale out half way through, but better to know when it’s time to quit I guess.
Love the joke – thanks TC!
Terry Crow
Sorry to hear that. I have had much better luck with Winstar, including contacting them via email to request a picture of Drosselmeyer, which they sent me. Maybe it was just an off day.
Max

I have been visiting Claiborne often since back in the 70s and have never been treated anyway but kindly and welcomed.
Terry Crow
Claiborne used to be a closed farm. When Swale died unexpectedly I wrote a note to Seth Hancock telling him how badly I felt for the farm. He sent me back a handwritten note thanking me in which he indicated that I could present the letter at the gate to see the stallions at any time. It is different now, as they have tours. However, it was a classy letter and I have it framed somewhere.
Ann NC
That is a great story,TC. Thanks for sharing.

Barbara Wood (Texas)
Terry, I’m glad to hear that. Our daughter, who was 10 at the time, wrote to Woody Stephens and never heard back.
Terry Crow
That is too bad, Barbara. If I was a famous person and someone wrote to me, especially a kid, I would make sure that I answered it personally. Funny thing is, I only did something like that one other time in my life. When Burt Lancaster had a heart attack and subsequent surgery, I sent my good wishes to the hospital. He wrote back to me saying thanks from the bottom of his new heart. He was always my favorite actor.
