Our recent trip to Lane’s End was filled with lots of excitement, including the pleasure of being able to help present a donation to the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross. The donation came from the sale of one of Zenyatta’s halters by Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital. If you would like to join Zenyatta and Rood & Riddle by making a donation to the Red Cross’s disaster relief fund, click here.
Here is the story from Rood & Riddle:
April 2, 2012, Lexington, Kentucky –A recent eBay auction of a halter worn by 2010 Horse of the Year and legendary race mare Zenyatta brought a final bid of $6,712.50 in a fundraising effort for the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross. Zenyatta, along with owners Jerry and Ann Moss, and Rood & Riddle veterinarian Dr. Debbie Spike-Pierce, presented the check from the sale of her halter to the Red Cross at Lane’s End Farm on Monday.
“It’s a great tribute to her, and to racing fans to come up with this size of a check,” said Jerry Moss.
After fees, the Rood & Riddle Foundation was able to donate $6,478.84. Jerry and Ann Moss also made a generous personal contribution to the disaster relief fund.
“She’s always been so generous with all the people, dancing for them, and showing up for them … it’s nice that she can still contribute. As you can see, she really enjoys it,” agreed Ann Moss.
Zenyatta was famous in her days on the racetrack for her 17 consecutive victories in graded stakes events, including 13 grade one races, which inspired a legion of devoted fans the world over. Since her retirement in 2010, the mare has resided at Lane’s End Farm outside Lexington, where she gave birth to her first foal, a colt by Bernardini, on March 8.
Dr. Spike-Pierce purchased Zenyatta’s halter in 2011 at a fundraising event on behalf of the Foundation, which chose to put it up for auction for the Red Cross after a line of severe storms and tornadoes tore through Kentucky in early March, destroying homes and farms, killing 21 residents.
“I guess you could be surprised [about the price it brought], but with it being Zenyatta and the absolute superstar she was on the racetrack, I wasn’t,” said Spike-Pierce. “We’re so excited to be able to give the money to areas that were so devastatingly hit. We’re excited we could be part of all this … and that Zenyatta could be too.”
Red Cross director of development Winn Stephens says the organization is thrilled to accept the donation, particularly given its unique origins.
“It’s been really amazing for us, because we’re providing services to Kentuckians, and this fundraiser is an only-in-Kentucky kind of thing,” said Stephens.
The money will go to the Red Cross’s disaster relief fund, which is used after natural disasters for both immediate needs like getting supplies to first-responders and individuals, and long-term needs such as financial aid to victims, cleaning materials and other supplies.

Simply cannot see too many mare/foal photos. Love the grey/white mares with their brown and chestnut foals. Cannot help but think Tasty took one look at her foal and decided there was a mix-up in the nursery and the brown foal in her stall was Zenyatta’s.
Keta
Me too!
Great comment about Tasty.
Nurse mare looks like she could be 12 TT’s “real” Mom

Is there any indication from the muzzle of TT’s little guy that he is going to turn grey?
Max
Tasty may need some glasses. Her little foal is gorgeous and it is hard to understand how she could turn him away. However his new step mom seems to be very devoted to him. She is an attractive horse herself with a very nice face. I hope that Lane’s End will keep us advised of how he gets along with her as his mom. As for Tasty, she still has quite a following even though she is the exact opposite of Zenyatta in the motherhood devotion department. Tasty, please learn this lesson from the Queen and get your act together as a mom for next year.

Smith to Ride Daddy Nose Best in KY Derby
By Jason Shandler, The Blood-Horse
Updated: Thursday, April 12, 2012 12:13 PM
Jockey Mike Smith will have the mount on Daddy Nose Best in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), according to assistant trainer Scott Blasi.
With regular rider Julien Leparoux riding Union Rags in the May 5 Derby, Blasi said Smith confirmed April 12 his intent to ride Daddy Nose Best, who is coming off consecutive victories in the El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) and Sunland Park Derby (gr. III). The son of Scat Daddy is trained by Steve Asmussen for Bob and Cathy Zollars.

Wait! This is something I was not aware of. The Kentucky Derby presented by Yum Brands? Say it ain’t so.
Sharonatlanta
It is so and this is the same sponsor as last year. Don’t remember about year before last – I can’t remember that far back. As a matter of fact, I think I’m still in GA but I wouldn’t swear to it.
Terry Crow
Well, you are in the right place for a redneck. But, you have failed to yet join the club. All kidding aside, I find this to be really objectionable. Don’t know how I missed it last year. Churchill Downs would have gotten an earful from me. Isn’t anything sacred? Have the Preakness or the Belmont done this?
Zenyen
The Derby has been called “The Kentucky Derby presented by Yum Brands” since 2006.
http://money.cnn.com/2006/05/05/news/companies/yum_derby/index.htm
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Terry, apparently the Preakness and Belmont have not succumbed to official tackiness. For the Derby, ‘Yum brands’ is the “presenting sponsor”, but the other Triple Crown races simply have many more sponsors (16). High Hoof to them!
Shari Voltz from Ohio
That drives me crazy. I think we should all say The Kentucky Derby by Yum Brands : )
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
No, this is the kind of bleep that just made me want to change the channel, when I saw that branding last year. It is so offensive. Trash tradition, and everything has to be a commercial — sell, sell, sell! Don’t get me started.
Terry Crow
Vicki-I couldn’t agree with you more. It would be interesting to know how much Yum Brands paid Churchill Downs for this. About the only positive thing I can think of is that I was not aware of it until now. ON the negative side, I wish I didn’t know about it.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
Yum! brands has been the sponsor for a while.
Terry Crow
Apparently. I’m glad I didn’t know.
Karen Gogue / L♥ve m♥mma and b♥by!
As I recall, way back when, Visa left the Kentucky Derby as the sponser and caused some anxiety for the racing powers that be. NO ONE BUT YUM BRANDS stepped up to sponser the time honored tradition of the Derby. So I SUCKED IT UP as much as it was distainful! I am just thankful that they did, or we may not have had coverage of this for awhile. Racing was sliding downhill even more at the time, ratings were just not there, dismal.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Thanks, Karen.
Terry Crow
Karen-I respect your comments. However, what Churchill Downs did was not right. If they were so worried about it, they could have dropped the purse some. At this stage in time, the size of the purse does not mean a whit to the owners. They want the prestige of winning the DERBY.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Karen & Terry, I also was thinking more about this on my drive home last night. It’s great that Yum Brands “stepped up” to sponsor the Derby, when no one else did. But how can this kind of advertising, simply irritating people by constantly flogging their name, actually be beneficial? It’s so crass, it simply makes me want to stay away from them, makes me pay attention to avoiding them. Are the values of marketing people so warped, that they feel more “exposure” (their name starts sounding like a mantra) is what we all need? Isn’t there more to life than buying and selling? I start thinking that marketers must be incredibly myopic in their world-view, and simply invested in greed & short-sightedness, and severely lacking in esthetic sensibility & ethics. Soap-box over.
Terry Crow
I have NEVER bought a product because a particular celebrity is endorsing it or the product is sponsoring a show that I like. ON the other hand, I have intentionally not bought a product for the same reason.

I replied to your post way above about Mikey Smith video!
Trisha from VA
After reading about Tasty Temptations colt and him having a nurse mare, i started researching just what a nurse mare is and what the process is. It made me sick to my stomach. What a discusting and inhumane way to treat the little foals , just to keep the nurse mare in milk. Is there no agency out there to prevent the foals from just being left to die? How very awful. What a shame , it breaks my heart. I would take them all if i have a place for them. Tell me what i can do.
Team Zenyatta has taught us so much about love and compassion and how she and fans are effecting the industry to be better and more humane.
God love you Team Zenyatta.
Andrea
Yeah, it is a sad fact of the business. These foals are worth several figures. LFSN means that stud fee is due and payable when that baby gets up and nurses. If the dam is not cooperating, the farm will find a replacement. Many nurse mare operations are highly reputable, and take wonderful care of the nurse mare’s foal. I think the very idea of breeding a mare, just on the chance that a highly bred TB a few farms over might reject her own foal, so that she can be shipped over after being taken away from her own baby to nurse the high dollar TB foal is ugly too! Oh well, that’s the way it is!
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
There are rescues that specialize in rescuing nurse mare foals.
In this case, I’m inclined to believe LE’s statement that this particular mare lost her own foal. It does happen. It’s the height of the foaling season in the middle of horse country, so there will be mares available whose foals have died or been stillborn. I know for a fact that owners who have lost a foal will often try to pair the mare with an orphan as quickly as possible.
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Good for them. It is about survival isn’t it? Why allow a newborn foal to die because he/she can’t nurse from his/her biological mama.
Terry Crow
Here is a really bad horse joke. A horse walked into an ice cream shop. “I’ll have a chocolate ice cream cone,” the horse said. The ice cream man gave the horse the cone. The horse had a $10 bill in his saddle, and he gave it to the man. Since man didn’t think the horse would know a thing about money, he gave the horse $1 back. “Thanks for coming in,” the man said. “We don’t get many horses around here.” The horse replied “Well, no wonder if you charge $9 a cone.” Now that you have quit groaning, here are some golden oldie redneck jokes. You might be a redneck if you’ve ever bought a six pack of beer with pennies. You might be a redneck if your first name consists of initials. You might be a redneck if your job is breeding chia pets. You might be a redneck if you’ve ever made night crawler jerky. You might be a redneck if your main source of income involves manure.
Max
Terry. I love this joke. I started laughing at the first sentence before the joke itself even started. I hope that you have an unlimited supply of these horse jokes.

Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
These are great, Terry! And I hadn’t heard them before, a bonus! Now the last one, “You might be a redneck if your main source of income involves manure”, can also easily mean so many we hear about in the news (like politicians, lawyers, & wall-street executives, to start a list). Although that is really unfair, giving perfectly good manure a bad name.
Terry Crow
Vicki-You have a point there. There is manure and there is MANURE.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Thanks, Terry. This is a subject of which I never tire. LoL, may say something about me. Karen Gogue continued the “Manure” theme below (https://staging.zenyatta.com/news/zenyatta-halter-raises-over-6400-for-bluegrass-red-cross#comment-148269), which encouraged me to expound further.

Dear Judy Berube–I was SO sorry to get on the site and discover that you had lost your beloved Russ!! Have always loved the posts from you two. I feel sure that the loving support which you have received here must be helping, what a family we all have!! I pray that all the friends here will continue to brighten each day for you. Don’t you love Terry’s calling Russ and Kari our celestial members??
Sue Noel/Sun Valley,ID
Barnaby is here!!!!! I’ve seen him, touched him, hugged him,fed him—-and I still can’t believe it!!!!He is even more beautiful than I anticipated. He looks to be about 15/3 and is so gentle and sweet and seems to be a real “people horse”,like Casey. He loves his treats and comes to a whistle!!
He seems to know his name already and to be very happy to see visitors. Sue went to see him yesterday and today on her way back and forth from teaching in Twin Falls. I’m making a quick trip down tomorrow afternoon before the ranch closes,as I get off early on Fridays. Then,we will both go down early on Saturday morning and groom him and trim his mane and tail a bit–and spoil him rotten!!! I can hardly wait. Will have to wait a few days to ride him, until he is out of “quarantine”,but I’ll have fun just loving him!!!
I spoke to a friend back east the other night and he said “you sound just like a n excited little girl who just got her first pony”—-I must admit, that it’s exactly how I feel!!!! I am so getting forward to bonding more and more with him and to making sure that he is happy!!!!
When I ordered his halter and bridle tags,I also got him a wonderful charm for his bridle–a tiny winged “angel horse”,with a halo, which of course,is Casey, who I know will be watching over us!
DebbieG
Congratulations Sue! I’m so glad that Barnaby made it safely. It sounds like he has a wonderful home!

This is a wonderful story. If it were not true, somebody would have to make it up. Idaho is a great place. I have a story about the Evel Knievel attempted “jump” over the Snake River Canyon.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
So what’s the story, Terry?
Terry Crow
OK, When I was a contributing member of society, I did a lot of traveling in my work. One of the places I went to was Idaho. Landed in Boise,an d rented a car so I could go to where I needed to conduct some business, Great Falls. Great Falls, or was it Twin Falls, I forget, was the place where Knievel attempted to “jump” the Snake River Canyon. Elaborate precautions were taken and Knievel obtained permission from the people who owned the land upon which the jumping off place was located. Actually, the vehicle he was attempting this in was a sort of modified rocket and not a motorcycle. Anyway, I was talking to people who were there at the time and they said there was a problem in that Knievel did not obtain permission from the people who owned the property where he was going to land.. Those people had been trying to sue him from the time of that “jump” to the day he died and a lot of the townsfolk were really bitter about him. At that stage, the canyon was only about 200 yards wide. I said it was a story, not a good story.

@Terry Crow; So you met Kurt Russell!! He is one sexy guy. (Have not seen him lately in a movie)
There was one movie I found funny & cute. Goldie & he starred in it. She is accustom to lavish things. While cruising on an huge yacht with the man she is to marry, (the guy with all the money) she goes overboard I think. Anyhow, she is saved but she has amnesia. Kurt plays a guy with a bunch of bratty kids living kind of like rednecks. He claims she is his wife so that he has someone to clean and take care of the kids. Remember? Can you remember the name? And how could you not recognize Kurt Russell!!!!!! ha ha

Terry Crow; It may have been embarrassing to you that you did not recognize Kurt but I have had several embarassing moments. Here is one. I went to the library; it had not opened yet. There was a lady perhaps 40 yrs old waiting too. I began a conversation with her, which was great until I asked her when her due date was. She responded that she was not pregnant, that she knows she has weight to lose, as she pointed to her abdomen. She was nice about it, but I was s p e e c h l e s s for a few seconds. I finally said “Oh it is so difficult to tell these days with the styles of tops”. I swear I will not ask that question again!!ha ha (I embarrassed her as well as myself) My big mouth!!

Dear Zenyatta,
Hello my most lovely friend. Thank you and Team Z for sharing the amazing photos and video. You are all so very generous and loving in your kindness toward others. I am so happy that the auction was such a great success in raising money for those in need of help after the terrible storms which hit the mid-west. Rood and Riddle does such fantastic work on behalf of horses and humans!!! You were just TOO CUTE helping to hold up that big check for everyone to see, Zennie. It was wonderful to see Ann and Jerry visiting you again and of course seeing your little Prince is always so very special. How I love you both!!! Sweet dreams always. Hugs and kisses. XXXXOOOO

Hi Dawn I have been thinking about you : ) Madame Mistletoe had a little trouble in her last race. I wonder if Zenyatta would give her private lessons : ) Love, Shari

Don’t give up on Madame Mistletoe. She apparently does not like racing on the inside of horses.
