Dear Max.Huge congrats to Dan!!He’s unbelievable!I saw Young Joe hitting Australia a lot,I find he leaves his challenge a bit too late in races. The year Frankel won they all ran down the middle of the course,is much better.Did you see Kauto wishing Quevega a happy retirement he’s such a sweetie.Free the Moose!Sheena.
Max
Sheena. Nothing else like that win by Frankel. He ran down the middle and they all raced after him. Brilliant.
Saw Kauto’s comments. He once said that he loved Quevega. Moosie loves Annie.
Waiting now for the KD. Will let you know as soon as it’s over.
Free the Moose. Neigh x 9.
Max
Sheena. California Chrome won it by at least 5 lengths. The chestnuts are rolling it all out today.

How about that. Beautiful race.
Congrats to all. CC was gorgeous today. Crying tears of Joy!

Dear Ann
Grand Ole Chestnuts, For Sure, Don’t you think………………………..
Ann NC
Peggy, what a day for those guys! I have been in tears over their fine efforts.
Max, loved the hug Charlie gave, Dan in the Winner’s circle. That’s what it is all about. Just when you think, Dan could not out do himself…WOW!!!
He’s brilliant and so is, JV.
Max
Ann. Dan was giving Uncle Johnny a very hard time today. LoPresti says that Dan goes all aggressive when he sees other horses in his way. You bet. Go Danny!
Max
Ann. Saw that hug on Dan in the winner’s circle from LoPresti. He loves Danny. He’s also tight with Dan’s older brother. He’s still trying to get a grade 1 win for Successful Dan. Hope that he succeeds this year. If Sizing Europe can win on the jumps at 12, the Dan’s are still babies.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Going wild cheering for Chromey was wonderful! I was so sure he could do it, I couldn’t go for anybody else, but I also thought, “What the heck do I know about racing?” So it was fun to have the one I put my heart on, win too, convincingly.
But since the pace was relatively slow, already nay-sayers are hoping for theirs at the Preakness in two weeks.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.That’s great news!! A real champion win.Chestnuts rule today.Wonder who will win the I000 guineas tomorrow.I’ve been watching Kauto’s 5th King George.Still moves me to tears!Free the Moose.Sheena.
Max
Sheena. That win was awesome. CC might be a real TC candidate. That horse can run. They are calling it a 1 and 3/4 quarter length win. Looked longer, but the stewards know the facts.
It was wall to wall chestnuts today. Thunder, Annie, Abby, Danny and Cali. In Dan’s race, the top 3 are chestnuts. If there’s a chestnut in the 1000 tomorrow, she’s got a chance.
I watched Frankel’s guineas win today. What a race that was.

I attempted to send you the results of Gabby’s race from my i phone. Don’t know if you got it. Unfortunately, she finished fifth out of 8 horses. So far, I cannot come up with the replay. Hope she comes out of the race alright. The race notes say she raced wide with a mild rally. Love and Hugs, JB

Hey, Judy I check my emails. Didn’t see anything, but you know I always thank you for what you do.
So hope she came out of the race good. That’s what’s most important.
How about CC & Dan Great Great Great
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Peggy:
Great day for Chestnuts. Any horses that are claimed in the race are listed right under the Claiming Prices. Nobody was claimed out of that race today. Here’s the chart again so you can see where it would be listed. I hope Gabby came out of the race OK too. Love and Hugs, JB

Huge Congratulations to California Chrome and all connections. Great Horse
Could we have a Triple Crown Winner this year.
Dan the Man, What can I say. Love Ya Dearly. Great Race.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Max
Sorry about Medal Count. I was pulling for him too.
Max
Peggy. Not his race. Very happy for CC. That is one fine story. It’s something to see how the racing gods bestow greatness. CC has a nice pedigree, AP and Danzig among many other talented horses. The stars have to align perfectly to get a horse like that.
This year is the 50th anniversary of Northern Dancer’s KD win. All in all good days for racing.
Tiz Herself
Congratulations to California Chrome!
He was the favorite but he was the underdog at the same time. There were a lot of unkind remarks about him, his trainer (not here, on the other sites) and he showed he belonged. His owners, trainers would not have turned down $6 million for him had they not had the faith in him.
He was a picture of perfection today. The one that comes to mind was way back as a kid I read the Thoroughbred series and though Ashleigh’s Wonder was a mare and fictional, he reminded me (not sure why) of Wonder, the coat that gleamed like a brand new copper penny. This is inspiring to those (me) who one day dreams of getting into the industry, particularly in the breeding industry, and knowing that in a sport where people will spend $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ on horses that the Derby horse can come from anywhere. Lucky Pulpit is an absolutely beautiful individual and the footage they showed of Love The Chase on NBC, it is not hard to see why California Chrome turned out so well. Some ran him down for being a cal-bred, however his sire was a KY bred.
I also love that A.P. Indy was well represented here as he is a great grand daddy of the Derby winner and a granddaddy of the runner up, too. Commanding Curve put in a good effort. I was a huge fan of his sire Master Command (lost way, WAY too soon) and he is something special too. Danza also warrants props as he had a miserable trip right from the gate and he was up for third.
Also, congratulations go out to the gutsy, gritty war horse gelding Wise Dan. He showed his courage and why he is the two-time horse of the year defeating Seek Again in the Woodford Reserve. It was overall a great day for racing… the stars are aligning… with California Chrome’s running style, he should have zero issues with the Preakness. Hoppertunity may pose a threat and maybe Social Inclusion could realize his superstar potential, however, I am all behind California Chrome, anyone else thinking Triple Crown??????????????
Deb E.
California Chrome must have some Secretariat genes in his background since A.P. Indy was Big Red’s grandson. The chestnut coat and the white socks certainly hearken back to The King.
Tiz Herself
Pulpit was the grandsire of both the Oaks and Derby winner this year! Long live Pulpit! I was a huge fan and will always be a fan!
The blood of Indy reigns supreme as he was the grand grandsire of both the Oaks and Derby winner this year and the grandsire of last year’s Oaks and Derby winner… cannot wait to see more!!! Cannot wait for Coz and Ziconic to continue the legacy!
Max
Anyone who thinks that Cal bred horses don’t rank as first class horses should have a word with Tiznow. He took down the best that Kentucky and the world had to offer – twice. Tiznow, you rock!
Tiz Herself
I have 100% respect for Cal horses… Tiznow, Proud Tower Too, Thor’s Echo, Free House, Points offthebench, Bertrando, Brother Derek, Indian Charlie, Best Pal, Swaps, Snow Chief, Lava Man, Decidedly, Dancing in Silks, T.V. Lark, Nashoba;s Key, Native DIver, Bob Black Jack, California Flag, Moscow Burning, Budroyale, Joey Franco, Continental Red, Cavonnier, etc. etc.
Northern Dancer was CDN bred, Secretariat was VA bred, my all time fav Skip Away was FL bred… to me it does not matter, they all deserve respect :-)
Max
Great list of wonderful horses.
Terry Crow
TH-Thanks for the list. Brought back a lot of memories.

Dear Terry C.,
Mr. Sherman is the man! Happy for you and your friend! I was pulling for CC and he sure came through. Big Congratulations to all! Hugs

Agree with ya, Marshall. It has been a great racing day and I am so happy for , Art Sherman.
TC, glad you had that visit with him, you brought him good luck.
Hope they visit MD next….the good lord willing.
Love and hugs to all.
Sleep tight, CC, Dan, Z, C, Zi and Princess.

It was quite a day. The connections have already indicated that the Preakness is next. Just returned from Los Alamitos. They already have a sign at the entrance saying home of Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome. I couldn’t be happier for Art Sherman. Glad I have lived long enough to see this day.
Ann NC
That is great, TC.
The stall at Pimlico is waiting, mile high bed of straw and open arm welcome.
Get your Preak On, CC.

Huge Congratulations to A P Indy. Your Grand Grand Son did it. Wow. Soo Soo happy. I so much wanted one of yours to do it. Love Ya Always……………………………….
Tiz Herself
His grand grand son did it and his grand son was in second! Good day for A.P, considering he was also the grandsire of Orb last year! The legacy of A.P. Indy keeps on rolling!!!
Tiz Herself
A.P. Indy is also the grandsire of Princess of Sylmar, last year’s Oaks winner :-) and he is the grand grand sire of this year’s Oaks winner Untapable! Indy reigns supreme!
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear TH,
Yes I agree with so much happiness. AP Indy reigns supreme.
So happy for him. Tears of joy
Congratulations to Lane’s End and Your Sire of Sires. The Best of the Best.

Thank you, Lord, that all the horses and jockeys got from point A to point B safely today! During the post parade, I had the fleeting thought, that next year Coz might be out there strutting his stuff in front of the Twin Spires and the year after that it could be Zi. I felt goosebumps raise up on my arms!
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Deb
Yes first and formost, Thank You Dear Lord that all came off safely.

That occurred to me, too, Deb. I don’t think I could handle the pressure!!!!

How About Danny Boy for “Horse of the Year” 3ld time……………………………..
It will be hard if California chrome wins The Triple Crown but Oh what we have to ponder.
I know Dan was thinking today with them all after him, Oh know you don’t beat me.
So much heart this horse.
Great Win, “Uncle Johnny”
Terry Crow
Dan is a wonderful horse. You can’t take anything away from him.
Debbie G/Kentucky
What a fantastic Derby! I’m so happy for California Chrome and his connections. He’s a special horse. Speaking of special horses, Wise Dan was awesome today too. It was a great day for chestnuts.
Speaking again of special horses, I just watched the Kentucky Life episode with Zenyatta in it. It was really good. The first part of the show was about the 1913 Derby winner Donerail and his jockey Roscoe Goose, who was the biggest long shot to ever win at 91-1 and then they talked about the history of the mint julep. It was really interesting. They saved the best for last though. Charles from Lanes End was on there and Michael Blowen talking about Zenny and they showed a lot of footage of her. I’ll save it on my DVR forever! At the end of the show it said that you can order a copy of the DVD at shop@ket.org or you can call 1-800-945-9167.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks for this info Debbie! Can’t wait to see this :-)
Terry Crow
Love that guy’s name, Roscoe Goose. The story is that all of the jockeys agreed to throw a party and the winner was to foot the bill. Goose didn’t think he had a chance so he readily agreed to it.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Debby G:
Thanks for the info on the DVD. Love and Hugs, JB

@sheena. Just realized that Joyeuse is racing tomorrow in the 1000. Let us know how she does. Also just noticed that Australia is a chestnut. He’s going next to the Epsom Derby according to Ballydoyle. Thunder is not. Hannon says that Thunder will stick to mile races. Might go to the Irish Guineas.
Hope The Fly races next year.

Wonderful to see Barbie back in good health & winning!
It was sad reading that Lauren had been replaced-but that is racing.
I had wondered reading/watching Lauren’s rides if being on the big stage
and in the spotlight effected her rides.
So, now we wait and see if Barbie continues racing or becomes a broodmare.
Thanks for keeping us up-to-date on the amazing Miracle of Life.
Hugs, BGG
KathyR
Dear Bluegrass Girl:
I too feel for Lauren. She came to racing late, has been unlucky in the number of serious injuries she’s suffered, and is probably in the wrong state in terms of her racing career – South Australia has the biggest number of female jockeys in the country, and they are a talented group. And the Clarken stable is only small, so it limits her chances at other than track work. It’s a tough business at that end. Hugs, KathyR.

So happy for California Chrome and all his connections, especially Art Sherman. A just reward for a hard working man. Espinoza rode an awesome race and managed to avoid all the rough stuff going on.
Glad Gary Stevens spoke up about Rajiv Maragh. I haven’t liked that jockey since he intentionally slammed into MMM after he was taken off the horse after the Derby. MMM then bumped AK which affected his performance also. I hope the stewards take some action this time and suspend him.
Janet Newman
What a great win for CC, Art Sherman and DAP ( Dumb Ass Partners), not so dumb now.
I like that a very humble man like Art Sherman wins a big won and hopefully he will take CC all the way. I think many were dismissing CC, but he carried himself like a champ. Glad he broke well out of the gate.
Still hate the fact it is YUMS Brand Kentucky Derby, to me it is the Kentucky Derby period.
I know it has always been the way that new horses come into the Preakness and Belmont. A. P. Indy would not have won a classic had that not been the rule, but I would like to see the chance at the triple crown come from field out of the derby only. If you can race in 2 weeks, then 3 weeks, that is the mark of a champion. I agree with the late Jim McKay. “It is not that we have so few triple crown winners, but how few we have.” It is a grueling test when you think of it and all the triple crown winners of the past earned it for sure.
KathyR
Dear Janet:
I’m with you on these naming rights. Down here, it’s always the Melbourne Cup as far as I’m concerned, not whatever sponsor’s Cup. And I certainly always think of it as the Kentucky Derby. Problem with being old-fashioned I guess! Cheers, KathyR.
Terry Crow
Janet and Kathy R–This advertising is ridiculous.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
I see no reason to restrict the Preakness and Belmont to Derby horses. “Fresh” horses, at least recently, have not had an advantage in the Preakness. From 2001 through 2013, the Preakness winner had run in the Derby, with only two exceptions: Rachel Alexandra, who had run in the Oaks and so couldn’t be considered “fresh,” and Bernardini, who might not have won had Barbaro not been injured. A couple of fresh horses won the Belmont, and some Belmont winners ran in the Derby and skipped the Preakness, but some also ran in all three races.
Anyway, entry conditions are set by each track, and the three tracks are independent of each other, with separate ownership and management.

Traffic problems during Derby
Kentucky Derby: California Chrome makes it look easy
By Jay Privman Daily Racing Form Updated on 05/03/2014 9:07PM
From the article”
There was quite a bit of trouble just behind the leaders the first time through. Vicar’s in Trouble, who started from the inside, ended up in a tight spot behind horses and had to check sharply. Danza was clobbered by his Pletcher-trained stablemate Vinceremos, who swerved across lanes. And as the field entered the first turn, Candy Boy clipped heels and had to check to the outside.
California Chrome was in the three path for the length of the backstretch, and as the field neared the far turn, Samraat moved up to his outside. At the quarter pole, there were four runners abreast, but Uncle Sigh yielded first, Chitu began to fade, and then California Chrome turned on the jets and opened a daylight advantage.

Dear BGG:
This is the same jockey that crashed into MMM at the start of the 2011 Belmont Stakes causing MMM to bump into Animal Kingdom. You have supported his chances for quite some time. Take a bow.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Thanks for that, BGG. And Terry Crow, I’m glad you got to “be there” at LosAl. I love some other of the trainers’ comments on Chromey:
From Samraat’s Rick Violette: “…The winner was just better. We looked him in the eye and he just pulled away….”
From Medal Count’s Dale Romans: “…I do want to say one thing on the record. I didn’t think that California Chrome had any chance going into this race and I was very, very wrong. Whether the crop’s a good crop or not, that’s a special horse. I was wrong. I was a very big skeptic; I threw him out of all my tickets in every spot. I didn’t think he fit the profile to win the Derby. I’m very impressed the way he came into it, the way he looked, the way he was prepared and the way he ran. Now he has a new fan.”
From Chitu’s Bob Baffert: “…I was watching California Chrome stalking. You could tell he was comfortable the whole way. He’s for real. It’s going to be a great Triple Crown series.”
Terry Crow
Dale Romans is a big man in all ways. It is not easy for man in his position to say the things he did. I must admit I had some doubts about it. Since CC had not competed against most of the horses in the race, it was hard to assess how he compared. You hope for the best, but expect the worst.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Yep, Terry. I am such a neophyte at this whole thing (horse racing), that I just go on my “feelings” about whatever. And I had a strong feeling about California Chrome, pretty much like I did with Wise Dan last year. But I still wondered if I was imagining things. And nice to find, I am not.
Terry Crow
Good for you, Vicki. There are a lot of people shaking their heads today.

We watched you on TV big girl…you are still front page news and a star in every way!
Love, love, love that a California bred horse won the derby! What a story…maybe we’ll have the next triple crown winner in CC.

Little things speak to our hurts. Sounds, fragrances, music that would mean nothing to others, reach into our souls to do a work that the obvious could not touch. Simple remedies can heal the deeper ills-a smile, a contented whistle of a passerby, the sound of birds twittering at dusk-these things warm us and give us hope. But we have to listen for voices, inner and outer, to give us rest-and turn away the negative talk, the negative circumstance. We don’t always believe we have a choice-but we have more space there to work than we know. We can no longer scoff at the power to help ourselves. We have a bigger hand in it than imagined, and it is our decision to get down to business and be open to help and healing from unlikely sources.
Day and night cannot dwell together. Your religion was written on tables of stone, ours was written on our hearts.
