“American Thoroughbred” coffee table book now on sale
Chelsea exhibition open through the end of July
Zenyatta now has a place of honor among the most photographic race horses of the era. Her fine art portrait shot in black-and-white on film is a featured highlight of a prestigious gallery exhibition in Manhattan and an art photography book titled “American Thoroughbred.” Fine art photographer Neil Latham photographed America’s greatest race horses, but says Zenyatta was the one horse that best captured the essence of the thoroughbred.
“It’s all about the eyes with Zenyatta,” says Latham. “Her eyes reveal her soul; she’s such a deep creature. We made a very special connection that day of the photo shoot.”
Zenyatta’s portrait is one of just 26 images selected for the exclusive gallery show. It was selected from among 6,000 frames shot during the three-year project that sent the photographer with a massive studio set-up from Saratoga to Kentucky to Southern California in his quest to portray the intrinsic nature of the breed.
Legendary horse farms opened their gates to allow Latham to photograph their multi-million-dollar horses, including Stonestreet Farm, Lane’s End, Coolmore, Gainsway, Spendthrift Farm, Ramsey Farm and Adena Springs. Latham also shot at race courses, and put himself in harm’s way in enclosures with stampeding horses. He photographed thoroughbred super stars such as A.P. Indy, Curlin, Tapit, Rachel Alexandra, Ghostzapper and Triple Crown winner, American Pharoah.
Art Photography Book
Zenyatta is a highlight of the large coffee table book consisting of 182 pages with 80 duotones featuring the mastery of light and shadow you expect from painstaking Ansel Adams-style photography, development and printmaking. The images are a mix of intriguing studio isolation shots of gleaming muscles after breezing, noble portraits, and wild, unbridled shots of stampeding horses kicking up dust giving the images a magical effect.
“As an artist, I’m intrigued by the juxtaposition of strength and power with beauty and fragility,” says Latham. “I wanted to illustrate determination and character through taut muscles and coursing veins after a fast-paced run, and capture the wild spirit of a charging herd.”
This limited edition book, “American Thoroughbred” by Neil Latham, was published by Twin Palms, and is casebound and slipcased for quality presentation. It retails for $95 and is available from the publisher at https://twinpalms.com/books-artists/american-thoroughbred/ or from Amazon (ISBN: 978-1-936611-12-6). It can also be purchased at the Steven Kasher Gallery in New York through the end of July.
NYC Gallery Exhibition
Zenyatta’s beauty is a highlight of a current gallery exhibition in Manhattan at the Steven Kasher Gallery through the end of July. The show features 26 large-scale, black-and-white photographs illustrating Latham’s unique perspective and technique.
Each limited edition art photograph is hand-printed with massive custom-made enlargers and equipment, developed in large pans of chemicals, and hand-corrected in the way of artisans from the earliest days of photography. Every individual print is a masterpiece, and is available in limited numbers in a few sizes ranging up to 50 x 60 inches for maximum impact. They are finished on archival paper with museum framing and artist signature.
“Neil Latham: American Thoroughbred” featuring Zenyatta’s portrait among her equine peers, will be on view through July 30, 2016 at the Steven Kasher Gallery, 515 W. 26th St., New York, NY. Gallery hours through July 8 are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Summer hours begin July 11, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The show closes July 30. For more information about the exhibition, see www.stevenkasher.com/artists/neil-latham.
American Thoroughbred has developed quite a following on Instagram, see @neil_american_thoroughbred. The photographer’s website is www.neillatham.com.

Traveller Update–
Woo Hoo–her “output” is looking much more normal. I think the hot bran masheds she is getting morning and night are helping ! She is really full of energy. She took one of the meds fine last night, mixed with her grain. It was a paste that Barnaby licked and liked. There was a probiotic thing they gave her which she would NOT eat, no matter WHAT we mixed it with ! She is very smart. You should see her slurp down her bran mash though–she LOVES them! While she is having her mashes these days, (they BOTH got them weekend mornings this winter) i distract him with some of his favorite red organic Rainbow carrots and some Fujis.
The last two days he has done the cutest thing—while we are leading Traveller around for her walking regimen and he is free to wander on the lawn and graze, he has gone into the riding arena, really just a large round pen, where she begins her walks, on his own, and has gone to stand on the exact spot where i tie him when he is getting groomed and tacked up when he is going to be ridden. He then gives us a look as if to say,”well, here I am, is someone going to ride me?? Since I have to go down there in the AM dresses in my cords, shirt and sweater, for work, Sue has gotten on for a short ride both days. After he so plainly asked, what else could she do?? Of course, she loves to ride him anyway, but it is so fun to respond to his messages. After I took his tack off, the flies were bugging him, so I gave him his fly spray, which he LOVES!! I think I have mentioned before that there is only one kind we can use, or else he breaks out with a rash. It is Tri-Tec, in the silver bottle. When I spray it on him he stands still as a statue, with no halter or anything!! When I get up around his head, he sticks his chin way out and raises his head to tell me,”get that place under my chin, between my cheekbones”–he just LEANS into my hand when I rub the cloth soaked in fly-spray under there. He actually recognizes the silver bottle when I bring it out and comes to me to be sprayed.
Boss Mare Sue had a chance to go to a play down in Hailey tonight, so I am going down to see them alone tonight after work. I just need to give her the mash, top off her waters and give them both some hay. I am going to leave his stall door open again tonight as he likes that best..
Hope I can get one of those gorgeous books eventually. I’ll bet they sell out the first printing just wi th folks from this blog!!
I am passing on the messages to Boss Mare Sue and both of the horses–thank you ALL so much!!
Love and sweet dreams to all !!

Dear Sue,
I am so happy to read that Traveller is improving and has good energy. Your Barnaby sounds like he is able to break from his guardian duties to stretch his legs and get some pampering as well. So glad things are looking up in your horse world.
NancyStamp
Dear Sue, How I enjoy your stories and the love you show your horses. Hope for all good news from now on. I think Barnaby is just responding to all the love he is receiving and he is smart enough to appreciate it. You deserve all the love he gives you back. What a wonderful experience. Keep the reports coming. All my best wishes Nancy

Dear Sue Noel,
Thanks for more good news. Power Up, Traveller!!
Honestly, Barnaby is truly a remarkable fellow. How smart and sweet he is!! It is my opinion that he is quite the genius in addition to being a handsome hunk. He likes the ladies, and it is reciprocated. Give him extra hugs and kisses, please.
Brains, Beauty and Brawn all in one lovely package — oh, AND Personality. That’s your brilliant Barnaby! Thanks for sharing him and Traveller with us, Sue.
Hugs and Love,
Marshall

Dear Z Fans:
Remember that beautiful little white headed Bodemeister colt born in June in Kentucky? His Dam is a daughter of Bernardini. He’s been named Southern Phantom. Name was chosen from those submitted by fans to Blood Horse. Nice name, I think. What a cutie he is. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Judy B.,
Thanks for the link. He certainly is a cutie, quite handsome and unique. I think it is a good name, too. Inspired by the Phantom of the Opera mask and the farm name. A great cause, too, the $5,000 given to the backstretch workers fund. Very nice!
Good luck to SP and may he run happily with good health and soundness always.

What have we been thinking, what have we said, what have we resented? We get so wound up in all the things other people do and say that we lose our own perspective. When we find ourselves in such circumstances, we should remember the words of John Keats: “I cannot see what flowers are at my feet, nor what soft incense hangs from the boughs.” We can’t see anything good when we are so bound by resentment. Throw off all those weighty things and go free. Get rid of worry that does no good. We can stand up and go to meet freedom and it will come to meet us. No longer will we have to tolerate those overbearing moments in our lives.
Complaint is just toward friends who have failed their duty.

Blessing for Rick Porter, Mr. Zayat all the other horsemen and women and the volunteers who have stepped in to help the Borell horses. Hope the person responsible is brought to justice. I mean Real Justice, not a slap on the hand.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Shirlee, me, too!
Am thankful that Mr. Porter, Mr. Zayat and all the other kind people have come to the aid of those horses. Those responsible for neglecting them deserve punishment.
Prayers and good wishes to the horses; may they find health and happiness in their lives from now on.
Hugs and Love

Dear Shirlee and Marshall:
I hope so too. Sadly, usually the punishment doesn’t fit the crime and it just keeps on happening over and over again. It happened right in Hudson’s barn before she moved to the wonderful place she is at now. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Kathy. There is so much resentment going on over here just now.Get a grip, people,we voted out.Nobody said it was going to be easy Many want another referendum.Enough politics, today we remember our beloved Kauto Star I have posted a wonderful poem Catriona wrote in tribute on my FB.I find it so difficult to believe he is no longer with us.A beautiful photo of Sprinter enjoying his holidays at Mill House Stud in Shropshire. He is in rude health and having fun with his friend Jenkins.
Miserable day over here but, boy, the chicks are growing pretty stormy there today and wasn’t it marvellous news about Delyth’s 3 chicks. Her new partner has been named Dylan but Dai Dots hasn’t been seen sine late April.I had forgotten Fubu lives in West Virginia.I hope he and Kimberly are safe.Abby is going to have a pool party when mum visits the Grand Canyon with her family! It’s raining at Wimbledon too but they do have the roof on Centre and we are looking forward to Marcus taking on Federer.Mr Fibbs was busy cooking last night and they all had chocy-cobered starberries. He will make an excellent President.Samwise is doing well with Tom they even met a bear on their travels!I love the way Tom writes his words just flow.It doesn’t really promise a very good week weatherwise but it may be dry Saturday! It’s pouring at the moment.Such a sad situation in Istanbul last night 41 confirmed dead and a country that depends so much on tourism. It was so good to see some horses leaving Maria Borell’s farm last night.Kudos to all who have helped.Have a great day and keep cool.Love and hugs to you,Kisses for Angel Holly,Nikko and Sugar.SheenaXOXO
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
Everything is in a mess politically now. Awww…Kauto Star. One of the GREATS! I will look for the poem. I will look for that pic of Sprinter. Sorry the weather is nasty. Our’s is, too, right now. I think it’s raining either in the mountains or the desert right now. We’re feeling very muggy here! Glad the ospreys are thriving. Great news about Delyth’s chicks! Where are you, Dai Dots?!! Oh, I do hope Kimberly and Fubu are alright. I had forgotten they were in W VA, as well. I guess Mango’s mum must be retired. If not she sure gets a slew of vacation time! Enjoy Wimbledon! The ratties are very gourmet…chocolate-covered strawberries! That’s great that Samwise and Tom are getting on so well. A bear! Oh my! So sad hearing about yet another terrorist attack. Our world is in a heartbreaking state. Absolutely, thank you to all who have stepped in to rescue the Borell horses! Have a great Hump Day. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Angel Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy XOXO

Today in Great Britain we remember our beloved Kauto Star who was put to sleep after suffering catastrophic injuries in a paddock accident. We were shocked to find all this had nearly a week previously and our darling boy had been allowed to suffer. He should have been admitted to the Clinic right away.I am not saying he could have been saved but…His “accident”will always remain a mystery only he knows what happened that dreadful day.At my age,I have lost many of my favourite racehorses either by old age, illness or on the racecourse but Kauto’s death affected like no other.I want to remember his racing career and not his last days. His last 2 races will forever remain in my memory the King was still champion and we loved it!We will always love and miss you Kauto and after looking at the lovely photos of ‘Fly’this week enjoying his retirement I thought you deserved this life too.You needed to be just a horse.Your star will shine forever my beloved boy.Sleep tight with the Angels.Forever in my heart.SheenaXOXO
When he shall die,
Take him and cut him out in little stars,
And he will make the face of Heaven so fine.
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun.

Ann Maree / Tennessee
Has anyone noticed that Zenyatta’s Facebook page is approaching 500,000? This is an amazing number. 488,085 Total Page Likes Total as of today June 29, 2016.
She has been off the track officially since December 2010, so over 5 1/2 years her popularity has continued to grow. I never can resist smiling a little bit at what Bill Farish had to say not long after Zenyatta arrived at his Lane’s End Farm to become their most famous boarder. He was asked to comment on how they would deal with her popularity, and he basically said that he thought her popularity would die down after a time, that interest in her would fade away eventually.
So far that hasn’t proved to be the case, and this year at Saratoga, Zenyatta will be inducted into the Hall of Fame, as we knew she would be the very first year of her eligibility. We are a little over a month away from the opening of the meet at Saratoga, with the official Hall of Fame ceremony scheduled for August 12. It will be live streamed according at the web site from 10:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. EDT. I’m sure more will be posted about this momentous event.
I could not be happier for Zenyatta and the entire Team Zenyatta family which we have all been made a part of through the generosity of so many these past years, and I’m so thankful for all that Lane’s End and their entire staff have done and continue to do to ensure our precious “Z” girl is happy and healthy. Long live the Queen!!
Sally Blank (cherishes Z and her foals)
Ann Marie; I Know, it is wonderful!! BUT we all knew she was the QUEEN on and off the track! I have been blessed to know Zenyatta who I love so much and I know you do to, we all do, has Ann & Jerry Moss and all her connections and Lane’s End. hugs, Sally B
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Ann Maree,
Beautiful post! Thank you so much for stating what we all feel for Zenyatta and her family.

Queen Z a is a national treasure and her team should be thanked for allowing all of us to continue to a small part of her life.
I haven’t heard how Z’s son Ziconic did in his recent race, could someone post the results?
Sally Blank (cherishes Z and her foals)
At one time if what Lane’s End had said was true and Z’s popularity would dwindle off, I had thought perhaps I now could see my lifetime horse soon!! I still wish! BUT I would rather see every one still loving and caring about Z for that is the most important thing to me.
