Zenyatta Delivers Her Fourth Filly

VERSAILLES, KY — (June 10, 2023) It’s a girl! There was great joy last night in welcoming ZENYATTA‘s eighth foal, a beautiful filly by War Front. She arrived during sunset, 9:18 PM, at Lanes End Farm. The foaling was filled with ease and elegance and both mom and baby are in excellent health and exude happiness. Zeny’s new filly has legs for days and sports a blaze to match her mother’s. 

In attendance were Zenyatta’s co-owner, Ann Holbrook (Moss) as well as Farm Manager Todd Claunch, Broodmare Manager Jenn Laidlaw, and with Tremendous gratitude to the veterinarians from both Rudd and Riddle and Hagyard and the entire farm staff at Lanes End Farm for their beyond ordinary incredible love and caring! Ann is overjoyed to welcome this beautiful filly to Zenyatta’s family. This will be Zenyatta’s last foal as she is being retired as a broodmare.

    Keep Two Phils in your thoughts and prayers, please.
    After his wonderful race in the Ohio Derby at Thistledown yesterday, he was found to have injured an ankle and has been sent to be evaluated by veterinarians to determine if surgery is indicated.

    Dear Z Fans:

    I’m having trouble in the video hearing what Baby Z has been named. Got the meaning, “new beginnings”. Sounds like “Neem O Way” (phonetically).

    What does it sound like to you? Has anyone been able to make it out?

      Dear Judy,
      I have the same problem. The first thing I thought of was the beginning syllables in “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, LOL!! But then realized it wasn’t the same sound (not wee mo wah).
      Glad some of our Z-Fans have been able to lend some light on this name.
      Maybe we will get further information on the “Nymue” origins. I also was
      surprised at the rather quick name selection.
      Thanks for the official name registered in the Jockey Club Name Book.

    I watched the Bloodhorse video several times trying to listen carefully to what Jenn Laidlaw was saying. I believe she said that Z23 had been named “NEMUI” pronounced “Neem A Way” meaning “New Beginnings.” Thank you so much Lanes End and Bloodhorse for sharing the video. Both Zenyatta and baby are beautiful. Love the Queen and all of her offspring so very much!!❤️

    Judy and Barbie,
    I did the same thing! Ran the video twice to concentrate on how to pronounce her name! I came up with the same, phonetically, but had no idea of spelling! Great name, and I cant believe she has been named already! Or could this just be her “barn name”? She looks so strong! will really enjoy watching her grow and develop.

    I hope that is not how Z23’s name is spelled….. I googled it and found it means “sleepy” in Japanese! Barbie, how did you find the meaning?

      The name is causing a lot of conversaton. Jenn Laidlaw noted in the video that the name meant “New Beginnings”. Many fans looked up Nemui and found the meaning to be Japanese for Sleepy/Sluggish. No other translation could be found. So of course that was confusing, and hard to believe Ann and Jerry would want to label Zeny’s last foal as sleepy and sluggish. It was suggested that the spelling was incorrect and a change might be coming and that’s exactly what happened. BUT now even this new spelling, Nymue, doesn’t translate to “New Beginnings”, but is the name of the Lady of the Lake from the story of King Arthur.

      The only other meaning I found for Nymue was: The essence of the given name Nymue stands for compassion, creativity, reliability, generosity, loyalty and a love for domestic life.

      I hope we hear more about the name from Ann herself. Maybe we will get a new Blog entry with a name update.

    Lynn, I found the spelling on the Zellda Horse Racing Fan page. Azaria Cavasin posted the link to the video and in the heading of her post the name was spelled “NEMUI.” In the video Jenn Laidlaw from Lanes End said the name meant
    “New Beginnings,” but she didn’t elaborate on the spelling of it. I suppose it could be spelled differently.

    ZILKHA so far is still assigned to Santa Anita, I guess they haven’t given up on her yet, but she hasn’t been “digitally tattooed” and has no recent works. The ZELLDA colt has no name and probably won’t get one until next year.

    It will be fun seeing who Zellda was sent to this year! Hopefully Zenyatta’s talent reappears in the foals of her daughters.

      Dear Rebecca:

      There was an article in TDN earlier this year where John S said ZILKHA was having recurring issue with heat in one if her legs. (She hadn’t worked since Oct 2022.)
      Then she had a work on April 2nd this year. Have been checking, but no works since. Guess this heat issue has not resolved.
      Praying she’s 100 percent soon. Bless JS for always doing what’s best for the horses.

      I’m hoping we get to see Zilkha and Nymue race and win. They don’t have to get Black-Type, although that would be fantastic, but I really would like to see Zeny get one winner under her name. The next best thing would be to see Zeny’s girls deliver the Black-Type.

    I have her in my virtual stable so I was aware of her works. A recurring heat issue is not a good sign…. Hopefully she will be 100% soon or retired like Zellda.
