VERSAILLES, KY — (April 20, 2014) It’s a girl! Zenyatta’s third foal was born last night at Lane’s End Farm. The bay filly by War Front arrived at 12:03 am, just in time for Easter. She has one white sock and a blaze.
The foaling, Zenyatta’s third in three years, went smoothly. In attendance were Zenyatta’s owners, Jerry and Ann Moss, Dr. Holder from Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, as well as Farm Manager Mike Cline, Broodmare Manager Charles Campbell, and others from Lane’s End Farm. The Mosses are overjoyed to welcome the latest member of Zenyatta’s family. The loving mother and full-of-life foal enjoyed a beautiful and sunny Easter day.
Zenyatta has previously delivered colts by Bernardini and Tapit. Cozmic One, born in 2012, is now in training at Mayberry Farm in Ocala, FL. Ziconic, the recently-named chestnut colt by Tapit, is a yearling under the care of Lane’s End Farm.
Thanks to the Zenyatta fans who have kept watch, posted comments, and sent good wishes!

Horse Races NOW tweet Thurs. April 24 2014
RacingTrivia A: The late Bill Shoemaker rode a record 26 horses in the Kentucky Derby
and 4 of them were winners!
Terry Crow
Mr. Shoemaker was very nice to me when I was a little boy and I will never forget him. The winners were Swaps, Tomy Lee, Lucky Debonair and the greatest ride of them all, Ferdinand. Anyone who doubts it, just check it out on you tube some time.
Max
The Shoe made a huge mistake when he gave up on Northern Dancer to ride Hill Rise. He thought that the little horse could not win the Kentucky Derby. Had he stayed with the Dancer, he might have had 5 KD winners.
Terry Crow
Max-No doubt about it. Northern Dancer was his biggest mistake in picking his mount and he made his worst riding mistake with Gallant Man. Bill Hartack was the beneficiary of both of these.

Another Jockey I liked very much was Eddie Arcaro. Didn’t he win the Derby something like 5 times. I think he lived in Miami for a while too.

Dear Peggy:
Eddie Arcaro tied at 5 Derby wins with Bill Hartack and EA won the Triple Crown two times with Whirlaway and Citation. BH never won the Triple Crown. Two great riders. Love and Hugs, JB

What greats they were. And, the horses Oh my gosh.

Arcaro was a great rider and yes, he did have five wins. My preference for Shoemaker is personal in nature.

Sweet momma Zenyatta, how are you and your precious little girl doing? I know she is getting all that good milk from you Z!!
I have not come up with a name for her yet. Right now the boys have similarities in their names Cozmic One, Ziconic such as the mic and nic. Will they stick with that for a girl, that is the question and I will be anticipating for a long time!! It is always exciting.

@Max– Sorry I didn’t answer your “apple” question yesterday! Barnaby still LOVES his Fujis!! He has also branched out to love Honeycrisps too! They have a very short season here,so I was careful to intersperse them with the Fujis,so he wouldn’t get too hooked on something I couldn’t get for him for months on end!! Is he just a LITTLE spoiled???? Nah!!!!! There are times here when both of those variaties are 3.99 a pound and some of my friends gasp and say “you’re buying those for your horse??” “That’s what he likes and that’s what he GETS”, I tell them. Of course,I buy them for Traveller too–I wouldn’t feed something special to Barnaby and not share with her! They have leaned to love pears too–I told them that Zenny loved them so they should too—and –they do!
Max
Sue. Many thanks for the info. I was pretty sure that Barnaby had developed a taste for Honey crisps because he got me on to them as well. Nothing much however beats a good Fuji. Don’t agree at all with those who offer up unsolicited opinions on short changing horses of their goodies. Like you, I’d pay what was asked to keep a horse supplied with his apples of choice. Please keep your stories coming. Very enjoyable.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Dear Sue, I do hope Barnaby will be OK. BTW, I love his apple choices–they’re my favorites too! Nice that he also shares Z’s delight in pears. Love and hugZ to you both, Trina

Sue–I almost hate to admit it, because I hate to show my ability to spoil, but a year or so ago, I bought Money a box of Harry&David pears. He had a party in his mouth…..

Max-I will now tell the story of how my dog came to be called The Budster, not to take anything anyway from The Mooster. HIs real name is Buddy, but it all changed one night when I was in the race and sports book in Sams Town, Las Vegas. I was just about to leave for the evening when I noticed that there was a horse named The Budster running, or pacing, in a harness race at The Meadowlands. I looked at the odds board and saw that he was 30-1. I thought to myself, self if you leave and find out later that this horse won you will never forgive yourself. Anyway, I had been having a pretty good night up to that point, similar to Trotter in Let It Ride. So, I went up to the seller and put $20 across the board and wheeled him in the exacta. To make a long story short, The Budster won in a four horse photo and paid $65, with the exacta paying $575. I was laughing when I went up to collect, and a guy I recognized as a regular there asked me how I came up with that horse. I just laughed again and said it was the name of my dog. You should have seen the look on his face and a few of his buddies that were standing there. The guy then turned to his friends and said “We’ve been here all day, studying the form, analyzing the races and we haven’t had a single winner. This guy wins because the horse has the same name as his dog.” I couldn’t stop laughing. Exit, laughing.
Max

Max, Judy, Ann, Marshall and pam-That is one of my favorite memories. I dial it up in my mind when things are not going so well. It happened about five years ago. Judy-I had forgotten about June Bug. Ann-Glad to know we have another fan. I am still looking for that football salesman.
LuvGus
The one and only time I went to the track (Big Brown’s final race at Monmouth – 2008, I think), I was going thru the racebook and making my picks for each race. I don’t bet real money – when I do, my horse loses for sure! – so it was just for fun – pretend bets. There was at least 2 horses in every race that I had some sort of “connection” with – worked with someone with a similar name, had a pet with a close name. One of my biggest “winners” was a horse with the name of a student I’d had in the preschool I taught in a few years before. He was the kind of kid that I can remember, even today, over 15 years later. So when I saw that, I just had to make my “bet” – and it was my best of the day! (Except for my Big Brown pretend bet! LOL) Anyway, I got the impression that the group of guys sitting next to me came to the track a couple of times a month, if not more. So right before one of the last couple of races, they’re going to make their bets at the window, and one says, “wait! I want to find out who SHE has! (meaning me!) She’s been hitting all day!” They couldn’t believe I wasn’t betting money. Or that I’d driven to New Jersey from Mass. – for the day – just to watch Big Brown race. Anyway, my choices did make them a little money (my 1st came in 2nd, 2nd in 3rd) – they were wise enough to listen when I told them about my real money jinx, and bet my 3 choices across the board, so they got a little something. Tired to give me some, but I wouldn’t take it – that would have killed my “luck” for the rest of the day! LOL Even today, when I watch, I look for names that I have some sort of connection to, and usually come in in the top 4.
Terry Crow
LuvGus-Great story. It certainly makes the races more fun when we can recall memories like this. Trina has posted my birthday poem a few times and it contains the reason why I no longer give out my race selections at the track.

Dear Sue Noel.Loved your comments about our Queen, like you I could never imagine the UK without her. She’s going to be an incredibly hard act to follow.Maybe you know the love of Princess Margaret’s life was Group Captain Peter Townsend she should have followed her heart and had a happy life.I only heard a few years ago she and Peter made a pact never to marry in their life time and when he married a young Belgian woman(who, indeed, bore a striking resemblance to the Princess)she was heartbroken and married Antony Armstrong-Jones on the rebound. We all know what happened there.
Do hope Barnaby and Traveller are getting better.Sending hugs to them from Wales! Love Sheena.

Dear Terry
Janet was right with the horse I was looking for. It was Lewis Michael. Rahy’s Son.
He was one of the horses that they really rode I believe quite a bit. And he really enjoyed being ridden. Its nice to see a horse like that.
That video was just great that Max posted. You mentioned Silver Charm. I didn’t know he was one of the one’s too.
I was looking at the Stallions on Three Chimneys web site and I knew someone was missing. It was Lewis Michael I was thinking about. Sorry he’s gone from there, but I’m glad He’s got another home. Wish he would come to Florida. i like him.
What did you think about what the exercise rider said about Point Given. He said he reared up so high he could see Three Counties. Yeah I think he was done with being ridden. But, you know when I met him there they talked so good about him. They said lots of times when they needed to show a horse out they would get him. Because he was so good with the visitors. I guess he just didn’t like being ridden anymore. You think he thought “Hey I’ve done enough” Too cute.
Terry Crow
Glad you got it straight., There is nothing more maddening than trying to remember details that you used to know by heart. Happens to me more and more.

A Poem to Pets Now Gone
To those who have sadly departed
And left us behind, broken-hearted,
We send our undying love.
You, of whom we’re so fond,
For us now patiently wait
At the bridge beyond.
We draw renewed strength
From the deep belief
That our sorrow
Will find relief
On some tomorrow
When at length
Through divine fate
We will with you in love
Reunite.
We’ll have that thrill
In heaven above,
And our now heavy hearts WILL
Again be light.

April 25 Cherokee Devotional
Someday, we will know how to take living in stride, to sidestep a great many things and completely ignore that many more. Sometime, we will learn to pay less attention to the imagined and stop fussing about things we had nothing to do with in the past-and cannot change significantly in the future. One day, like the elderly Cherokee, we can say, “So long a time since I see you…I don’t care anymore.” Soon, we will rid ourselves of things we saved for no good reason-and have room for what we really want. As soon as possible, we will worry less about trouble…knowing some people need it for their security. Very soon, we will sit together in the sun a whole day and just be happy that we can sit together in the sun all day and just be happy.
Even as you desire good treatment, so render it.
