VERSAILLES, KY — (April 20, 2014) It’s a girl! Zenyatta’s third foal was born last night at Lane’s End Farm. The bay filly by War Front arrived at 12:03 am, just in time for Easter. She has one white sock and a blaze.
The foaling, Zenyatta’s third in three years, went smoothly. In attendance were Zenyatta’s owners, Jerry and Ann Moss, Dr. Holder from Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, as well as Farm Manager Mike Cline, Broodmare Manager Charles Campbell, and others from Lane’s End Farm. The Mosses are overjoyed to welcome the latest member of Zenyatta’s family. The loving mother and full-of-life foal enjoyed a beautiful and sunny Easter day.
Zenyatta has previously delivered colts by Bernardini and Tapit. Cozmic One, born in 2012, is now in training at Mayberry Farm in Ocala, FL. Ziconic, the recently-named chestnut colt by Tapit, is a yearling under the care of Lane’s End Farm.
Thanks to the Zenyatta fans who have kept watch, posted comments, and sent good wishes!

Anxious to see a video of Zenny and her adorable filly. Also hoping that Mosses give Zenyatta a date with the Breeders Cup Killer. Tiznow is in the Top 5 Sire List for North American Earnings.

Congrats! Anybody know who Zenyatta will be bred to next?

I have waited as to not interfere with all of the excitement over our princezz.
I do have bad news. My Mom Ruth Brian’s Mom passed away Saturday evening.
Ruth was 84 and has spent 4 or 5 years in nursing homes. Not the way we want to go. Ruth is in heaven now and I am praying at rest in our fathers hands
I will be going in a few weeks to her service and I am taking my poem The Dash.. I hope to read it at the service or maybe by the grave site. I am getting to much practice but I like it and it has meaning to me too.
I have shared it before but here it is again.
The Dash
by Linda Ellis
I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end
He noted that first came her date of her birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years
For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not how much we own;
The cars, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard.
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
To consider what’s true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.
So, when your eulogy is being read
With your life’s actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

Today is the first anniversary of John Shirreffs’s departure from Hollywood Park– I’ll post the poem I wrote in recognition a year ago. As a little update, as you know, John has returned to race horses this spring at Santa Anita. Zenyatta’s half-sister Eblouissant had been scheduled to race in the Santa Lucia Stakes on Easter Sunday, but sadly she was scratched due to a little problem with “a snotty nose.”
A Poem of Fare-Well to John Shirreffs
(April 22, 2013)
’Tis with a heavy heart
That we SoCal-ers see
John Shirreffs today depart
From his beloved Barn 55
Backside
At Hollywood Park,
Where once Zenyatta did reside,
The wonderful mare
Who under John’s skillful care
Did thrive
And interest in racing revive.
’Twas here that John
Trained Z,
And ’twas here that she
Made her first start,
The first of nineteen victories.
As she continued on,
She won the West Coast’s heart,
And we all did of her boast
As the horse we loved the most.
In 2010 the entire nation
Joined in the celebration
And chose her for eminent distinction
As racing’s
Horse of the Year.
Now with sadness I hear
That the historic scene
Where the Queen
Once reigned supreme
Is facing
Imminent extinction,
To be torn asunder
By bulldozers
In a developer’s blunder.
After this fall
Racing at the Inglewood track
Known as Hollywood Park
Will forever go dark–
There’ll be no going back.
We wish John Shirreffs all the best
As he now leaves the dusty West
To realize his dream to train
On the bustling East Coast,
Which certainly top class racing does host.
As in the famous refrain,
We know John’ll “make it” there
For he could make it ANYwhere!
He will of course
From here be able
To take with him a stable
Of many a fabulous horse,
Among them the magnificent E.
We SoCal Z-sters
Find it almost tragic
That we’ll no longer see
That beautiful creature.
Though we’ll dearly miss her,
We’re happy at least
That folks in the East
Will get to know her magic,
For she in personality
Is very sweet, like Z,
Her older half-sister.
We also hope that back East
Many another promising racer lands
In John Shirreffs’s capable hands.
Whatever else occurs,
John may rest assured
Those days of Camelot,
Of which all have heard,
When Z was Queen
And John was king,
Will never be forgot!
Terry Crow
Truly epic, Trina. In my mind’s eye I can still see Z’s stall. Bless John in his future efforts. A pox on those who let it all happen.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Thanks, Terry, and yes, a pox on the developers and their cohorts.

Okay. I give up. What happens when they float their teeth? I don’t have a clue.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Pam.
The horses have their teeth filed down. Some of their teeth grow hooks that make it very hard to chew their food. The link below explains it better than I. The dentist said that Hudson is prone to hooks and her teeth should be floated twice a year. Love and Hugs, JB
http://www.equisearch.com/uncategorized/horses-require-regular-dentistry-and-teeth-floating-proper-chewing/
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Thanks for that, Judy. More than I will ever need to know about horse dentistry, but clearly the horse is still evolving (painfully) as a species, to lose canines & wolf teeth, and even have some difficulty shedding their baby teeth. Who knew? Equine dentistry seems also like an often unsophisticated practice, as the training is spotty.

Thank you Judy. I had seen that mentioned a few times before. At first I just pretended to myself that I knew what that was but I gave up……Thank you for the info!

What an Easter gift to the world!!!! My home computer is shut down,so it wasn’t until I got back from seeing “Bears”, (which was great,by the way) and got Sandy’s phone message that I got the news!!!! I am beyond “over the moon”–she is sheer perfection!! Everything about her just screams Princess! Those eyes, those eyelashes, those ears, her gorgeous body and that look, right at the camera, that says “I know just who I am and I’m ready to take on the world and accept all of the love and adulation that is my due”.
It was fun to know that I was only 30minutes off of her birthing time–I guessed Saturday night at 11:33!! Pretty good guess!
My deepest congratulations to Ann and Jerry and all of the team. What a joyous photo with the Princess and both of her moms!!
My thanks to all for sharing these precious moments with all of us–I keep saying every time that it is a blessing–but,it IS–these continuing glimpses into the lives of Queen zenny and her magical babies enrich all of our lives in countless ways!!

Dear Trina
Thank You for letting us know that Mondatta was already taken for a name. Did you say that the Moss’s had already named one of their other horses that.
It would have been perfect though I think for Zenyatta’s little girl. But I know they’ll think of a fantastic name.
Remember how the Jackson’s took the dogs names from the portrait as several of their horses names.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Barbaro’s Birthday is next Tuesday. Will never get over his loss.

Me, too, Peggy. I loved that horse. I think what drew me to him was his trainer, Michael Matz. I used to watch him in the Olympics and thought he was so special. Then he and his wife helped out in the plane accident and comforted the little kids. Even more special! He is so good with the horses he trains!
shirleeinindy
Peggy, I think the Jacksons ran out of dog names since Barbaro’s last brother is named Pennmarydel. Must be for the 3 states.

I sent a comment on the birth of Zenyatta’s Filly. It is not on the website. What happened?
Tiz Herself
Have not heard all of The Police music, however here are some names that are relevant to album titles or songs that would make really nice names for a Z baby
Reggatta De Blanc (or Reggatta, we could call her Reggie for short – or not)
Driven to Tears (she moved her fans to tears; however the name may be taken the wrong way)
Demolition Man (not for Z14, for a future colt lol)
Secret Journey
Darkness
One World
Synchronicity
Roxanne (I believe someone already posted that; I like it!)
Walking In Your Footsteps (likely too many, also like to twist it as WalkingInZen’sFootsteps or something to that effect)
Desert Rose
Brand New Day
Fields of Gold
Peanuts
Masoko Tango
Visions of the Night (or some play VisionZoftheNight or something)
Shambelle
Miss Gradenko
I do have to listen to many of these again as it has been a while… I like Reggatta though!!! Reggatta de Blanc was the second album by The Police released in 1979 – Reggatta de Blanc won Grammy in 1980 in the Best Rock Instrumental Performance category.
Then there’s Zenbella, Zen Again, Seven WonderZ, Zen’s Image, Wonderfilly, Merida (Brave), Reign of Zen, Princess Sparkle (I was a fan of The OC), Wonder of Wonderz, Leaderz Of Tomorrow, Starz Align, Mezmerize… I know my naming needs work lol… never stop thinking of them. I have pages of names i would use for my own horses (at this point imaginary horses lol)
Peggy (N) South Georgia

Good grief, Tiz! You should write a book or something on baby names! Lots of good choices there. I, too, like the Roxanne name but spelled like earlier posted.

I am more thrilled than you can imagine. What a wonderful loving horse, friend and Mother. I had probably one of the worst weeks of my life and that is why I haven’t been blogging, I don’t want to bring anyone else down. However, if you know of a position I can work in and I mean shucking stalls to feeding, being up with them from 2:00 AM on please let me know. Funny thing I was making a hot cup of tea this morning and it made me concentrate on my kitchen cabinet which has wood holes, etc., I saw a proud Momma and her filly in the cabinet. That’s when I knew, I haven’t been able to go online until now and voila my premonition was true. Bravo to Queen Z and I hope to meet her someday, (Bucket list). Love to all my friends out there, I know you really care, LONG LIVE ZENYATTA, COSMIC ONE, ZICONIC and of course 14 Z, Love you all, Ann, Jerrry, Dottie, John and Mike and of course Mario.
