Happy Friday!
How did you spend Father’s Day? We went to Lane’s End to celebrate with Zenyatta, and that was just the start of an exciting week…
12Z is getting so big, and we just had a blast hanging out with him and his mom.
Our next stop was California, where we stopped in to see Z’s little sister Eblouissante. We brought along Baby Z’s first halter, and Auntie Eblouissante got a kick out of it!
And then the most exciting news of all came this morning: Zenyatta is officially 60 days in foal to Tapit!
We also debuted our new column, Ask The Experts, earlier this week. Recently we invited all of you to submit questions about Zenyatta, her colt, and life at Lane’s End. Our inbox was flooded with hundreds of questions from all over the world.
We are so touched by the number of people Zenyatta has reached–-we love hearing from you! We also want to thank the ever generous people at Lane’s End Farm for agreeing to participate in this column, and for regularly providing photos for us to share with all of you.
If you missed your chance to send in a question, we will inviting another round of submissions in the future. Keep your eyes open!
Have a great weekend!

the ouner of I’ll have another is just after the huge money earning of the horse not the welfare and not the best interest of the horse.I’ll have another is double crown winner that is overwhelm for recognation of the horse, he should remain here in u.s.a. No matter what. But the money hungry ouner don’t care but himself and the big money payoff.Sad,Sad,Sad.

Agree. It is all right for a stable or owner to be in horse racing for the money if it is up front about it. But all of this shedding of crocodile tears, pontificating about how its all for the good of the horse?

i don’t remember why curlin is not a good match for z. someone on this board explained it a long time ago. could someone be so kind as to tell me again? thanks.
Darlene Daniels
Nancy,
I will give this a stab and if I am wrong someone more knowledgeable will correct me, I hope. It is because Curlin and Zenyatta are both so big the baby would be enormous. Therby a dangerous delivery for Zenyatta and a foal too big and langley to develop into a racer.
Darlene Daniels
Nancy,
Nevermind what I just said. Rachel’s answer below is much better and probably a lot more accurate.
I’m just trying to have fun and get over my depression about I’ll Have Another’. I’m sorry, I know your question is sincere and I should not have butted in.
nancy in nj
i asked the question, and you gave what seemed to me to be a great answer. please don’t think you butted in! thanks for paying attention to my question!
nancy in nj
darlene – i am sorry that you are depressed over i’ll have another. three chimneys says that the farm he is going to is beautiful and takes very good care of their stallions. i am certain that he will be safe for a while. i am trying to find out if the sale contract had a “return” clause or not, but no one seems to know. perhaps one of the very knowledgeable folks on here can tell us. that is what we need to pray for. if there is the return clause, then he will come back to the states when he is finished standing at stud. not completely comforting for you, i know, but the best we can hope for right now is his eventual safety. hugs.
Pati- Prince Z Future TC Winner
Three Chimneys has made mention that a clause has been included for a buy back if he doesn’t turn out to be a stallion “worth keeping” as was deemed by another conversation on the farm’s page.
nancy in nj
thank you so much! this makes perfect sense. guess i should stop hoping, now. thanks.
Pamela Kafton
Zenyatta’s pedigree and Curlin’s pedigree are not compatible, according to Alan Porter, an expert on breeding. It has nothing to do with the size of Z or Curlin. A.P. Indy was Zenyatta’s perfect mate, an A++++, according to Alan Porter, but, unfortunately, Zenyatta got to Lane’s End too late for A.P. Indy. But Bernardini, being a son of A.P. Indy was also a GREAT match. Tapit is of the same bloodline. Another GREAT match for Zenyatta is Pulpit. But she is not a good match with Smart Strikes and their progeny.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Size is also an issue with Zenyatta and Culin.
He is too bulky for her even if he had the right
Pedigree. It is a risk that the foal would be too big
And unbalanced to race.
She needs to have a less bulky, muscular mate
Around 16 to 16.2 hands.
Tapit’s conformation is actually a better match
For hers than Bernie’s
nancy in nj
pam – thank you so much for your response. i always had hoped she would be bred to ap indy, and, for a few days, couldn’t understand why they didn’t choose him. very shortly after they announced the bernardini mating, ap indy was pensioned because his fertility rate had gone down. i was sad. timing is everything, isn’t it? well, i think little 12z is just perfect, so maybe everything happens for the best. thanks again.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
That is one part of it besides the pedigree match
Rachel C.
They both have Mr. Prospector relatively close in their pedigrees. If I remember correctly he’s Curlin’s grandfather and Zenyatta’s great-grandfather.
nancy in nj
another reason for me to forget about my dream mating (z and c)! thanks so much for the explanation.

Zo Impressive Upsets in Mother Goose Stakes
By Claire Novak, @BH_CNovak
Live Oak Plantation’s homebred Zo Impressive captured the $294,000 Mother Goose Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park June 23 after 1-2 favorite Contested faded badly and Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner Believe You Can failed to menace.
The daughter of Hard Spun edged Disposablepleasure by three-quarters of a length in the 1 1/16-mile test for five 3-year-old fillies. Believe You can settled for third while the speedster Contested weakened along the inside and came home last on a track rated good.

Don’t you just love Prince? he never misses a photo up opportunity, just look at him giving the camera his best angle. If he gets any cuter we are in big trouble, and look at that royal neck of his, brings to mind the name, ROYALLY BRED TO Z. He will definitely be a dancer. Look at those straight legs of his, strong too. Happy that mother and child are both doing well and that the Mosses were able to spend fathers day with them. Aunt EBY is too cute. She must be his half sister???, confused. Someone help, maybe I should ask the question of Lanes End.LOL to all. May you all be richly Blessed.

Eblouissante is a half sister to Zenyatta. They have the same Dam, Vertigineux; different Sires. Ebby’s Sire is Bernardini and Z’s Sire is Street Cry. Prince has a close tie to Ebby because they have the same Sire and Ebby, being Z’s half sister, would make Ebby his Auntie. Hope I didn’t confuse you more.

Peggy (N) South Georgia
Hi Judy, Thank You so much for posting this race, I didn’t realize he was racing last night and I just by chance turned TVG on late and the guys were talking about Orfevre. I stayed up and got to see him. It was about 3am eastern time. You know I was thinking this was going to be a sad weekend after the news about I’ll Have Another, but it was heartwarming seeing this beautiful Colt. He acted like after they came to unsaddle him, He was just jumping around like he would have liked to have kept running. One of the guys said last night on TVG that his time might have been a record for that race, although i’m not sure about that. They said that anyone that stayed up to see it sure got a treat and they were really right. Isn’t it nice to still see what appears to be a healthy horse after such a great 3 year old year. God Speed to him.
I wish so hard that he would come to America, but I had heard earlier that they were pointing him towards the Arc in October. I’ll still hope.

Andrew Bensley had 5 tweets about Black Caviar on Sunday June 24
Trainer Peter Moody has just told me, Black Caviar has suffered two muscle tears during the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. Not the 1st time.
Black Caviar will enter quarantine in 20 minutes where she can be treated for muscle tears. She does 14 days at quarantine in UK then flies
Peter Moody says she certainly would’ve felt the injuries in the race. Will return to Victoria in a fortnight before quarantine at Werribee.
The good news, Black Caviar can be treated for the muscle tears while in Newmarket quarantine. No decision on future until she gets home
Peter Moody said Black Caviar is battle weary. She went for a walk and a pick of grass after examination and she ate up everything

Black Caviar gets a boyfriend
With news that Black Caviar has a new boyfriend called Saloon at Royal Ascot, online bookmaker sportsbet.com.au has priced a market for whether the love birds will continue their affection for each other.
$9.00 has been priced for Saloon to be flown back to Australia with Black Caviar after her stint at Royal Ascot.
And $51 has been priced for Black Caviar to remain in the UK permanently to be with Saloon.
“It doesn’t look like a huge chance that she will remain in the UK to be with Saloon, but given that they are so keen on each other it isn’t out of the question that he will make the trip back home with her,” said sportsbet.com.au’s Shaun Anderson.

Caviar camp cool retirement talk
24 Jun 2012
Connections of Black Caviar will not be rushed into making a decision on her future but there appears to be every chance she will race again.
The Peter Moody-trained six-year-old extended her unbeaten record to 22 with a narrow victory in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on Saturday. She would, however, have been beaten in a few more more strides as Moonlight Cloud nearly cashed in on a bad miscalculation by jockey Luke Nolen.
Moody said Black Caviar suffered torn muscles during the race, but he feels she will still return to the racetrack.
He told the Telegraph: “She is very tender up in her hind-quarters, but it is restricted to soft tissue damage. We gave her precautionary X-rays and had her scanned and the vets said everything looked OK on that front, but the chiropractor said she is quite sore and tender behind.
“They are all injuries she has sustained before, so it is not unusual. She has torn her quad muscle before and it will not be the finish of her. She is very flat (on Sunday morning) and will now have a couple of weeks’ rest. It is the tightest I have seen her after a race, though she has never travelled this far before.”
Moody said Black Caviar went into quarantine on Sunday morning and will be reassessed when she gets home in four weeks’ time.
“Hopefully, we will have her back for the spring carnival, where the Patinack Farm Classic, the race she has won for last two years, will be the target,” he added.
Part-owner Neil Werrett told At The Races: “Unfortunately England or Europe didn’t see the best of Black Caviar. At the same time, we’re very thankful she won and she needs a bit of a rest now. We want to look after her and she did a great job. If you look at Luke’s ride and when he dropped his hands, she normally just coasts in.
“But she was probably feeling a bit sore and as soon as Luke dropped his hands, she decided she was going to stop. I feel a bit sorry for Luke as the horse was raring to stop. I don’t think there is any doubt that if he’d rode her out, she would have won by a length and a half.
“She’s a high maintenance horse and we want to make sure she’s well before she goes to race again. If we retire her she’s gone out with 22 wins with the last being at Ascot. We’ve met the Queen and the horse got a pat from the Queen, so if this was the end, she’s ended on a high and she’s one of the best racehorses ever.”
