We’re pleased to share the news that Zenyatta was bred to Medaglia d’Oro this morning. She will be checked in fifteen days to determine if she is in foal.
Thank you to the staff at Darley and Lane’s End Farm. We look forward to a happy and healthy year to come.

Yes. This is an excellent choice. Have been waiting for this breeding.
Janet
Good choice! A respectable stallion for Zenyatta. If given a choice I hope for a filly……just seems right.
Terry Crow
It is right. We all hope for a healthy foal. Any distance will be no problem. Most are aware that Zenyatta broke her maiden in a 6 and 1/2 furlong race at now defunct Hollywood Park.

Wow, I didn’t know you could breed a mare that soon after having a foal. Hmmm who knew, not me that’s for sure. Learned something new.
Kathleen Deeds
Breeders often try to breed on the foal heat, which is usually 6-8 days after foaling.
Ronala
Yes, and often the babies go to nurse mares who are horses (of any breed) that have given birth and have had their own babies taken away. Look up nurse mare foals sometime. It’s very sad. I hope Z’s owners do not practice this. I know they just re-bred her because she lost her baby but I’d be curious to know if her living foals get to stay with her. I hope so!
LauraJ_Cincinnati
No, they don’t. TB mares raise their own foals unless the mare rejects the foal, dies, or becomes so ill or injured that she can’t raise the foal. Mares can conceive and maintain successful pregnancies while lactating, so there is no reason for them to have their foals taken away from them just so they can be bred. Zenyatta raised her first three foals until they were weaned around 6 months of age, typical for the industry. This is not to minimize the plight of nurse mare foals, but they are not common compared to the overall foal population. Look at it this way–nurse mares must be leased, they take up a stall, they have to be fed, and they require all the same services that any other horse needs. In other words, they’re expensive. It makes no sense to use one if one doesn’t have to.
Ronala
This place may disagree with you. They rescue nurse mare foals all the time. It does happen more than a few times.

A mare can get bred 7-10 days after foaling.
Gloria
Best of luck Team Z. We’re right there with you! Thank you for telling us so quickly!
Karen
Wow – 3 weeks after giving birth you have bred her again. I would have thought she would get a few months in between.
Debbie
This is completely normal. Even in the wild horses breed again this soon.
Kathleen Deeds
Mares are often bred on their foal heat, 6-8 days after foaling. Plus, since it’s already May, waiting a couple months would run the risk of it being too late to breed her at all this year.
Laurel
I have been waiting for this mating. Very happy!
