Here are today’s new photos of 12 Zenyatta, who weighed in on Friday at 191 lbs. Today he and his mom were turned out with the mare Spooky Minister and her three week old Candy Ride colt. They kept to themselves today, but we think they’ll be best buds in no time!
We’ll have more photos for you soon.

Oops- should have said ” 12 Z,” not “Z 12”. Told you all I couldn’t get used to it!

I’m thrilled!!! and hope Tasty delivers soon!!!
Sherry
Hi — I’m new to the forum and thoroughbred breeding, etc. I’m just wondering why the rush to breed Zenyatta again so soon? Just thinking that it would be nice to give her some time to adjust after having just foaled. I’m sure there’s a reason…thanks for any advice you can offer.
Zenyen
Sherry,
All racing thoroughbreds celebrate their birthday on Jan 1 regardless of when they are actually foaled.
Breeders want to keep foals as close to that date as possible so when a horse is 2, 3, 4 and racing against his/her peers they are as genuinely mature in actual age as possible.
If Zenyatta is bred the first of April on her first full cycle heat, it will mean another March foal in 2013, which is a pretty good position in terms of actual birth. If she were to bred instead in May then you start pushing the foal’s age, younger and younger against their peers for racing.
The Mosses are very kind, generous owners but they breed to raise and race their homebreds and they would want the foal to be as ‘old’ as possible when on the track in their racing year.

We all saw what a happens to a late foal (June) last year with Mucho Macho Man;
just not able to do it developmentally;
What a dynamo as a 4 year old !!!!
Max
Sign. Here is an exception. Northern Dancer was foaled on May 27, 1961 with no developmental issues of which I am aware. He took both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness as a 3 year old. His sire record is unparalleled as was his stud fee, $1 million with no guarantee.
signofthetimes
Wow, Max; did not know that. Amazing that ND
Matured so quickly, no wonder he was so special.
Zenny was also very mature in her mind, but not
Her body.
Max
Sign. Northern Dancer is a study in himself. Spooky is related to him. If you check his pedigree, you will see that his dam sire is Native Dancer, one of the great American racing grays of all time, and the basis for his name. Northern Dancer was a small horse of only 15 hands, but his legacy for both North American and European racing is incredible. Frankel for example has Northern Dancer on both sides of his pedigree through his sons Danzig and Sadler’s Wells. Frankel’s dam sire is Danehill. If you look up a photo of Northern Dancer’s son, Nijinsky, who is the last English Triple Crown winner, you see the image of Frankel. The power of those genes is quite amazing. Baby Z now has some from Bernie.
Sherry
Thanks so much for the info Zenyen….your information is very much appreciated.

Hi my name is Corey. hi baby z i didnt no u could walk yet
Rosemary McCauley - So. Cal.
Hi, Corey: He is getting around pretty good, isn’t he? In the photo, he looks like he can go pretty fast already. I hope you post another message about baby Z. He’s really cute.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
Hello Corey!
Horse babies are not like human babies. They can walk only an hour or two after they are born. Human babies can’t walk for many months! Isn’t that amazing?
Terry Crow
Corey-Good to see your post. Keep checking in from time to time.

Special guest appearances by Dan James of Australia and Clay Maier with his Friesians. The show will be the highlight of this season’s Kentucky Horse Park Literacy Program, which provided Michael Morpurgo’s “War Horse” books to kids in Central Kentucky. The show will complement the War Horse storyline.

Bravo to Tasty.
I will go the haiku route to honor her good work.
Tasty famously waiting,
a bonny bay colt
is now delivered
in her own time.

Patience is definately a virtue for those who work in the foaling barn.
There are no rules for equine deliveries. Amazing she foaled during the day.
Probably had every one tricked that she was going to keep her colt forever !!!
Max
Sign. Yes, it is an unusual time. It also shows a mare who is not intimidated by very much. That is our Tasty. Congrats to her and welcome to her little foal.

Definately agree, Max

Love the pictures!!! He is looking splendid. Congrats to Tasty and her foal and their connections. Will have to check Lanes End for pictures. I remember seeing a picture of Zenny when she was very young. She looked a little ungainly and all legs. But beautiful just the same. He will be a very handsome boy, no doubt about it.

Judy, finally our wait is over! Tasty gave it up! Where’s Max, out celebrating? Or maybe working on that poem.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Vicki B.:
Yes, thank God TT and her foal are fine. Now we’ll just have to wear wigs until our hair grows back. Hugs, Auntie JB
Max
Vicki B and Judy. I am wildly thrilled by this news of Tasty. She is something else. I wrote a quick haiku for her which is posted above. I will compose something longer later for her and Z to mark their friendship. Until Sunday I had never written a poem in my whole life. Such is the inspiration of Zenyatta.
Judy. Now we must grow our hair back until the next time. My fingers also need a rest from checking the LE foal list on my computer. This has been quite a month.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max and Vicki B.:
So glad it’s over and TT and her foal are doing well. Can’t wait to see photos. Yes, we must wait for our hair to grow back. Ha, ha.
Max, love your haiku to TT. You were a poet and didn’t know it. Love and Hugs, JB
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
I just read your haiku, Max. Well done! I’m glad you met the face of inspiration, and let it blossom. Tasty really had us bottled up for awhile, didn’t she? Tension mounting, messing with our minds and hearts — when she was “just taking her sweet time”. Of course, little 12 TT played his part in that, too. Thanks.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
High hoof. Max! I had written only two poems in my life before writing poems for Zenyatta and her friends–one as a schoolchild and one for my bother’s birthday thirtysome years ago. Zenyatta does inspire!
Heidi K (Vallejo,Ca)
Yeah for Tasty! I bet she’s relieved now. A bay candyride colt. Too cute! Hopefully, we’ll get pics of them. I would also like to see pics of the New Paddock Mate and her colt. Wooohoooooo!!

Congratulations Tasty – I was wondering if we would have to wait until the next full moon for you to deliver your little one. Can’t wait to see you and your TT12. Both of you stay healthy and happy and I hope the delivery went as quickly and smoothly as your buddie’s. One way or the other, I’m sure you both willl get to see Zenny and her Z12, whether in a nearby paddock or in the barn. HIGH HOOVES to the both of you and your owners!!!!
Mary Jo/Davie, Fl
Glad to hear about Tasty’s foal. He is in good company. Native Dancer was born March 27th also – in 1950. I recommend John Eisenberg’s book “Native Dancer, The Grey Ghost”. ND is a distant relative of Zenyatta’s and they really had so much in common. Native Dancer was racing when television was new and since he was grey he stood out on black-and-white TVs. Watching him was “must see TV” back in the day when horse racing was the most popular sport in the US. People loved him. He won all of his races but one – the Kentucky Derby. He was one of the GREATS!
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Thanks, Mary Jo! I’ll have to check out that book on Native Dancer.
Terry Crow
Native Dancer was indeed “one of the ones.” His Kentucky Derby will always be known for the fact that he lost and not about the winner.
Mary Jo/Davie, Fl
Native Dancer’s KD loss to Dark Star is so much like Zenyatta’s loss to Blame in that, in both cases, there was “victory in defeat”. The fact that ND & Z both had terrible problems to overcome and still came so close to winning; each losing by a nose. One witness to ND’s KD stated that his jockey “took him everywhere but the Ladies Room”. Anyway, ND & Z were media stars, and their one loss only endeared them more to their fans.
BTW, today (3/29) is Man O’ War’s birthday! So to all Zenyatta fans: HAPPY MAN O WAR BIRTHDAY!!
Terry Crow
Agree. Eric Guerin gave Native Dancer one of the all-time worst rides in Derby history.
Sue Fredrick - Wisconsin- Thankful
Congratulations to TT and Lanes End on there new baby………I think they should name him LATE TO THE PARTY, yikes the kid probably weighs 200 lbs. I can’t wait to see the two of them and how grey he is. It’s just too bad Z and her couldn’t have been a little closer in delivery dates. Luv you TT and 12TT, and finally kisses on BOTH your noses! Auntie Sue

Sue,
TT baby is a bay color
signofthetimes
Sue,
Did you see 12 Zenyatta running in the twitter
Photo?? Just like AP Indy with his head down.
Sue Fredrick - Wisconsin- Thankful
Dear Sign, just checked that out, whoa, just like grandpa nose on the wire. Love it, thanks for pointing that out. Hugs
signofthetimes
Dear Sue,
Really love that photo too, wouldn’t it be great
If LE had a photo of AP Indy at around that age
To see if that is when he developed that style.
Don’t think any of his sons hang their head that low,
Maybe his grandson will show him proud; and of course
His daddy proud, too.

They posted picture of Z and Baby Z……on twitter…must be with Spooky Minister and her colt… spooky is almost as white as Hansen
