Here are today’s new photos of 12 Zenyatta, who weighed in on Friday at 191 lbs. Today he and his mom were turned out with the mare Spooky Minister and her three week old Candy Ride colt. They kept to themselves today, but we think they’ll be best buds in no time!
We’ll have more photos for you soon.

Love You Zenny And Baby !~!~!
Can you please give a public update on Tasty ? I know last yr ”Z” and ”Tasty” were bred on the same day,,,,so That makes ”Tasty” Overdue. I do know that both were Maiden Mares , and that does have a lot to do with it. I have raised , bred, and foaled many, Just down the road from you, So just asking ,,,is there a problem with Tasty ? I know many Fans here have gotten to know her thru Zenny, and are concerned ?
Thanks !~!

Thank you!!!! Have been waiting for updates!!!!

Baby Z is absolutely GORGEOUS. He is a PRINCE. WOW, Lanes End knows they have pure ROYALTY there now. Lets see, Baby Z aka the PRINCE, his mom aka the QUEEN, and his grandfather, aka the ROYAL MATRIARCH ( A.P. INDY) . Gosh, no wonder Lanes End doesn’t have a visiting day for Zenyatta. They would have to call in the CIA to help with security around there. Zenyatta and Baby Prince couldn’t be in a better farm anywhere in the world as Lanes End.
hint hint: I read somewhere that QUEEN ELIZABETH of LONDON is real great friends with MR. Farrish (owns Lanes End) and when she comes to Kentucky, she stays in his mansion . Now that is just TOO CUTE, THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND can visit THE QUEEN OF HORSERACING………….
Alex Bowdoin, MA
Mr Farish was the Ambassador to Great Britain during the Bush era. They are good friends also. Yes, Queen Elizabeth has stayed at LE a few times….That would be great for Queen Z to meet Queen EII….
Zenyen
Except AP Indy would be the Royal PATRIARCH.
Sue Fredrick - Wisconsin- Thankful
Luvn Zenny, boy do you have it right, only Indy is a Patriarch (male) not Matriarch(female). I agree completely! Hugs Sue
signofthetimes
Fans may have made Z 12 the Prince, but he has
Not earned or proven himself in racing or in the
She’d. The Queen of England has many times over
Met AP Indy and raced many of his children in
England.

Thank you for the link to Past the Grandstand’s article! I had not seen it before and really enjoyed reading about the similarities between Zenyatta and Life is Sweet.
Cheers!

Great pictures for us again…that little Prince sure has his mom’s good looks.
You can see the kindness in his eyes just like Zenny’s. I wonder if John and Dottie have been to Ky. to see him yet?
Maryp (New York)
Thank you team Z for the updated photos. The little Z is too cute! Momma loves to watch over him by the looks of things.
A video would be very welcome anytime soon…that’s a subtle hint if ever there was one.

Yes, PLEEEEEEEZZZ – (not too subtle request!) for a video of Zenny and baby Z — wink, wink, blush, blush,

What a proud Mummy,
with her eagle eyes watching over Wee. Beautyful.
I’d never let either one of them go. Never. I’d be watching over them with my eagle eyes. :)
Glad to see they’re doing well, and as expected.

Way to go Tee.
Congratulations to all her connections
Allen
Zenny you and 12 Zenyatta look awesome. Thank You Lanes End for the update and pictures.
Allen
From 125 to 191 in 18 days, that little man is really growing!
Sharon in Atlanta, GA
I believe he was 130# at birth. Still, that’s 61# so Z’s doing a great job of taking care of him. I think he’s going to be a big boy just like his mom is a really big girl.
signofthetimes
Not really Allen, LE said he will be about 16 hands and
They are definately the experts.

I love the new Pictures and It’s great that Z and 12Z are out with new Friends!!
HUGS TO ALL…

Wonderful picts!!! Mom and baby look fantastic. Thanks for the update.

Dear Team Z.
THANK YOU so much for the new photos. I dont have words to describe how much they mean to me.
When looking at 12Zenyatta in this photo for some reason I had a flashback to my daughter’s tap dancing lessons when she was in kindergarten. I cant get over how much he has grown in just 2.5 weeks. Dear Queen Z you look fabulous!
Dear sweet Tasty. You are so much in my thoughts and I am anxious to see your little one.
Love to all.

Regarding the little Prince’s weight gain – on the Bloodhorse podcast from Lane’s End shortly after he was born, Mike said that they didn’t actually weigh him. The 130 lbs was an “estimated birth weight” so perhaps he was actually a little bigger from the beginning.
signofthetimes
He is definately not as big as Zenny was at the
Same age. He will be about 16 hands according
To LE the experts.
Judy
signofthetimes… I think Zenyatta was quite a bit older than 2 1/2 weeks when her photo was taken unless you are referring to some photo other than the usual foal photo of Z. Hard to compare their size yet. I know LE said he’d probably grow to be 16 hands but when you listen to what they actually said, it wasn’t definite. There’s really no way to know yet how big he’ll be. We’ll know when he gets there I guess. doesn’t much matter to me..
signofthetimes
I think LE has enough foals, weanlings and
Yearlings to know about size of horses.
What you are saying in human terms is
Obstetricians/pediatricians don’t know anything
About size and characteristics of babies when
It is their business.
Keta
Sandy,
It is interesting in the interview with the Lane’s End folks
about Zenyatta, the pregancy and birth, one of them said
that they were surprised by the size of the colt.
It took longer than usual for him to be foaled.
I think one comment was “he kept coming and coming”
There were six foals born that day.
Zenyatta’s colt was the last one
They were very happy that she waited til last.
signofthetimes
Keta
Both Zenny and Bernie have long bodies, 12 Zenyatta has inherited
That trait. I think LE made the comment because most foals don’t
Have that long of a body.
Keta
I agree–just thought it was interesting.
I can’t help but notice what shoulders & hindquarters Z12 has.
He is in a word: Zensational
Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Love you Zenny & 12Z. have fun with your new friends! ^-^

Beautiful pictures of Zenny and Z12. I have a question for one of our broodmare experts – Do maiden broodmares once having foaled is teamed up with a broodmare that has had several foals so that the maiden broodmare can learn by the action of the other more “experienced” broodmare? If this is how it’s done, perhaps Tasty would not have been sharing the same paddock as Zenny – but it’s nice to dream that they would have. Thanks in advance.
signofthetimes
It is a good idea to put a more experienced
Broodmare with a maiden so she can teach
Her the ropes should any situation arise.
However, Zenny is very smart so there probably
Won’t be much teaching interaction.
Doreen in CT
Thanks signofthetimes – I know that Zenny with her great mind probably doesn’t need much help, she’s a natural – but I’m sure having a more experienced broodmare is a relief to have around when their are situations that you don’t know what to do – I know when I had my first baby it was nice to be able to call my mom for guidance – but then again, horses aren’t humans, but they do tend to learn by the actions of others.
signofthetimes
Dear Doreen,
It really would be wonderful if Zenny could
Be with her mom to teach her the ropes, but
An experienced mild mannered mare and her
Foal will work, too.
Zenny’s look in the photo above “who is that
Over there??? And she has a baby, too”
Too bad she is not going to be with one of
The mares who had the Curlin or Street Cry foal.
They could start a rivalry at 3 weeks of age.
Max
Sign. Love your comments about what Z might might be thinking.
Sue Fredrick - Wisconsin- Thankful
Thank You Z team and LE for these lovely photos, he is just stunning! Those legs, those ears, that body…….well what more can I say! He’s going to be a runner!
My prayers go out to Bob Baffert, hope you have a speedy recovery and are home soon.
Tasty, I said it yesterday and I’ll say it again, GIT ER DONE!! You are a stinker making us go thru this pacing and hair pulling all over again. You have the stage all to yourself now, PUSH.
Kisses on Z and 12Z noses, and on TT’s nose and belly. Luv Auntie Sue

Great photos guys. thanks so much for the up date. Hope the pairing will be a nice as it was with Tasty. I know Zenyatta has so much to talk about and compare notes with Spooky Minister.
Zenyatta enjoy the time with your little one and give him a big smooch for me.
Tasty must be waiting until Zenyatta has her next foal so they can be together again!!! WHEW! Hope all is well with Tasty.
Love hugs and kisses to gorgeous Zenyatta

Good news. Thanks for the update.
Wow! Z 12 is already 191 lbs. He’s going to be a big boy.
Looks like he also takes after his mom in the eating and grazing department.
Zen will make friends easily like she always has and junior will take his cue
from her.
I’ll have to get used to the name “Spooky Minister” though. Tasty Temptation was
much more appealing. Hope all is well with her and she foals soon and all
is all right with her and her foal.
signofthetimes
Lanes End says he will be about 16 hands closer
To Bernie’s size.
signofthetimes
If you look at Zenny’s foal paper photo
And Z 12, there is a huge size difference. He
Will take after his site. She just taught him how
To eat well, that is why she was not photo genic
After delivery. She was teaching him through non
Verbal behavior to eat.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Maybe I’m looking at a different picture, but the one that Z posted on the second to last diary page (when her foal papers were being completed) says that she was “a few months old.”
Yvonne and Maurice
Hi Zenyatta, Baby Zenyatta and everyone, Whoa, Baby Z is so beautiful and 191 lbs. – I think he is going to be a big boy!!! I just know Zenyatta and Baby Z will get along fabulously with Spooky Minister and her baby Candy Ride. Can’t wait to see those bonding pics. Can’t wait to see TT’s baby!!! Love you all.
JudyNazarethPA
It’s interesting to point out that Spooky Minister is an unraced, but accomplished broodmare. This is at least her fourth foal by Candy Ride. She’s a gray, as are all of her babies (as shown on Pedigree Queery). Her 2009 colt Holy Candy (4-1-3-0 $65,000), a three-year old, is on the Derby Trail and is mentioned as “Knocking at the Door” in addition to Steve Haskins’ Derby Dozen as of yesterday! Her other listed progeny are a 2007 filly Halloween Candy (11-5-2-1 $118,940), and an unraced 2008 filly named Scary Ride. That’s quite a resume!
I hope she and Zenny become fast friends! I’ll bet their little ones will, too. :)
JudyNazarethPA
@ Judy Berube from Rhode Island – I just read back to your similar comments. Sorry, I didn’t mean to repeat information!
I think Holy Candy may be entered in the Santa Anita Derby, according to Steve Haskins – how exciting!
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear JudyNazareth, PA:
Please don’t worry about similar posting. I have posted links not realizing someone else already posted the same thing. Please don’t give it a second thought. Hugs, JB
signofthetimes
Just because a mare is unraced or has not been
Accomplished at racing does not mean they won’t
Be good as a broodmare. They may have a great pedigree
To pass on genetically like Zenny’s new paddock mate.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sign and Z Fans:
I posted yesterday that I didn’t think unraced mares should be bred. I think I should clarify my statement. If the mare as a filly showed no talent for racing or has no breeding of any consequence, I don’t think breeding them is a good idea. Yes, breeding is unpredictable and you never know what you’re going to get. Some of the best bred horses, selling for thousands and even millions at auction, may not make it to the track. But, I think irresponsible breeding just contributes to more Thoroughbreds dying at slaughter plants.
There is a documented case study dated 2/14/12 showing the number of TB foals born each year from 2004 to 2010 and the percentage of that number that die at slaughter. The percentage of horses from each crop that are slaughtered ranges from the lowest 56% in 2004 to the highest 79% in 2008. In 2010 the percentage of US Thoroughbreds that were slaughtered was 77%. Figures for 2011 were not included. It’s shocking, but these are the facts. So I feel anything that can be done to cut down these numbers, should be done. Would like to see the horses that are unraced and not breeding candidates, or others who do not have significant careers, given the chance to be trained in other venues like, therapy, police work, pleasure riding, show jumping or just become pets for those that have the means. As it is now, these horses are being sold quietly to kill buyers and sent to brutal death. I love every little foal that is born and when I
see the number of mares bred to each stallion, I wonder if each one of the resulting foals will become a statistic or have a chance at life.
I truly hope I have not upset or offended any of you. I love Zenyatta and Baby Z and have loved so many Thoroughbreds over the years. I love all of you and feel a kinship because of our shared love for Z. Just want the best for all Thoroughbreds. Hugs, JB
signofthetimes
Agree with you wholeheartedly; I am making
An assumption in my statement that a mare at
LE would have responsible owners, which may
Not necessarily be true. It seems that everyone wants
That champion and it is sad so many foals are born
To just get that one champion.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sign:
I know, that’s the sad part. Not all owners and breeders are like Mr. & Mrs. Moss. Love and Hugs, JB
BARB G (SKIP) and JULIETTE the Cat in NJ
RIGHT IN EVERY WAY, JUDY. I JUST RECEIVED MY NEW BLOOD HORSE AND GIANT’S CAUSEWAY IS SHOWN AS HAVING SERVICED SOMETHING LIKE 140 MARES ONE YEAR. AND HE IS JUST ONE STALLION! What happens to the babies who don’t make it…now that we all know what we know about what happens when horses reach the bottom rung of racing, the idea of having tens of thousands new foals per year is frightening.
LouAnn Cingel of Union, Missouri
Wow-just love the new pic of you Zenyatta and your happy 191 lbs growing boy! Such things bring me lots of smiles and make my heart sing! So glad to hear that you both finally have got some paddock friends and I am sure that within no time, Spooky Minister and her 3 week cold Candy Ride colt will grazing and running around with you two as if you were old friends. It sure will be exciting to see the two young growing colts playing and spending time together.
Hope you are enjoying the Springtime and so glad that you are doing great.
Sending my Love & Blessings to you Zenyatta and your sweet son!
I love you Zenyatta more than ever, you still get me the difficulties of my life and I don’t know what I would do without you!

The photos are lovely. Thanks a bunch. Am glad to hear that Z and 12Z now have some company. It will be fun to see if 12Z also inherited his Mom’s socialability.
Let’s all cross our fingers and hope that Tasty foals VERY VERY soon.

Zenny looks so content and Z12 (I can’t really get used to calling him that!) is ADORABLE! I would love to see video and/or photos of him when he meets his new little friend. However, I really appreciate so much the pictures we are getting. Thank you, Lane’s End!
My thoughts and prayers are with Bob Baffert and his family. His wife is from our very rural county.
Thank you to all for your thoughts, links, information, poems! Warm wishes to all <3
