Here are today’s new photos of 12 Zenyatta, who weighed in on Friday at 191 lbs. Today he and his mom were turned out with the mare Spooky Minister and her three week old Candy Ride colt. They kept to themselves today, but we think they’ll be best buds in no time!
We’ll have more photos for you soon.

Thank you again, Judy! Wonderful link with great photos! What a magnificent stallion!
I absolutely love the confirmation photo (#18) — perfection. The first “Big Red”!
All the best to you and Russ!
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Marshall:
You’re so welcome. Yes, Man o’ War was magnificent looking. Zenyatta connects to Man o’ War line through Roberto and Hail to Reason She has some stunning looking ancestors. Explains why she is so beautiful and why Little Z will be a Super Hunk.
Very sweet of you to think of Russ and me. Thank you. Hugs, JB
Sharonatlanta
What a magnificent horse. What strikes me is the lack of head gear. Not even a headstall and certainly no figure 8 bridle or tongue tied. Most horses in recent history have their tongues tied (humanely, of course) and Z had her tongue tied with a 1 inche wide strip of material. It doesn’t hurt them, it just keeps them from getting their tongues behind the bit. The horses in Man O’ War’s day and after just stayed on the bit. Interesting!
Marshall (NC broad)
Oh my! Make that “conFORMation”, definitely not confirmation! I must have had confirmation on my mind and just spelled the wrong word. I do know the difference! My brain must have stepped outside for a few minutes, LOL.
Yvonne and Maurice
Happy Birthday Zenyatta. Hope you and Baby Z and your paddock pals had a wonderful birthday celebration, filled with peppermint cookies and cakes. Love you, Angels.

RIP Ashford Stud Stallion Grand Slam. Grand Slam appeared in the Disney movie, “Dreamer”. Grand Slam died March 31st of heart failure at the age of 17. I was fortunate enough to visit with him last year. Great looking horse. You will be missed.
Terry Crow
In Dreamer, one of the better horse racing films, Grand Slam was used as sort of the epitome of what a stallion should look like.

Happy birthday beautiful Queen Zenyatta!!! Little prince looks hilarious singing to you. I love ya’ll both so much! Also happy birthday to our favorite grouch Dynaformer! What a guy!
Dawn Conrad / Colorado
Dear Zenyatta.
First of all, let me say HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BEAUTIFUL!!!! I just had to drop a line to let you know how very much I love you sweet girl. How I have missed you and all of my wonderful Z friends. It makes me very happy to see all of the messages. I hope that perhaps under the blog section, we could still get a daily entry. If there is news to post, wonderful, but if not just a simple date heading would be enough. With just the date to start things off, we could still chat together as we always have. I can see how all of the reponses to each of the news posts could be slowing things down, Zennie, but a daily date entry might help with that. Just a thought, as I am afraid I am just not very good at the forum thing or Facebook or Twitter. I will have to keep working at it and of course I so appreciate all that everyone in Team Z is doing for us. You are terrific!!!!!
Dottie, love and miss you always!!!!!!!
Sorry I haven’t been writing for awhile. I received a very special award from my company, US Bank and traveled to Washington DC to receive it, so I have been out of town. What a magical trip, I was treated like a Queen, Zennie!!! You know what that feels like, sweetie! I am thankful that Tasty is doing well and that you have someone new that you are bonding with. It is always hard to lose a special friend, but new friendships can be just as wonderful. Our little Prince looks very happy and healthy!! You are being a fantastic mother!!!!
In the news, it was a relief to hear that Bob Baffert is doing so much better after his heart scare. It was very sad that the racing in Dubai had a couple of fatalities. I also want to express my condolences to Coolmore on the loss of two of their great stallions. I loved getting the news that Tapit is your next date, Zennie. You know how much I adore Pulpit and he has some very special sons, so congrats to all!!
I also want to wish a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Sue Frederick, Jumbletwist, Karen Mitchell and Sue W. I hope you all had wonderfully special days!!!
Lisag (TX) – I was very sorry to hear about the flooding of your home. I pray things are back to normal soon for you.
Terry Crow – Love that humor my man!!
Trina and Karen – It was so fun to talk to you both on the phone. I so enjoy surprising people.
JAG, Keta, Signofthetimes – Always wonderful to hear from you all.
Abigail – I read your amazing tribute to our Kari and Ruffian. You always know how to touch hearts in a very special way. Thank you!!
Ashton and Cynthia H – You are both always in my heart, thoughts and prayers!!!
Peggy (N) – Love to you, sis!
Susan Carothers, Brenda S, Sandy (Ohio), Judy Berube, Barbara Wood – Hello lovely ladies!!!
Shari V – Love to you always, my dear friend!!
I can’t possibly catch up with everyone, so I am just sending a special HELLO to all of my fantastic fellow Z-sters!!!! You are all amazing and I am sending much love your way!!!!!!
Sweet dreams, Zennie. Hugs and kisses. XXXOOO

Dawn-Great to see a post from you. I did figure that if there was any problem, someone would have notified us, seeing how important you are to this site.
Sue Fredrick - Wisconsin- Thankful
Dawn, thank you for the birthday wishes glad you are back posting and to hear your mom is doing much better. Funny how when we don’t hear from someone our minds always think the worst, and here you had a wonderful experience. Congratulations on your award. Hugs Sue

Hi, Marshall!!! How wonderful to hear from you! Thank you for the welcome back and the congratulations!! You are so kind! Mother is doing fine, her gall bladder surgery is this coming Wednesday. Other’s who have experienced similiar issues have been telling her how much better she will probably feel afterward, so that’s a good thing. Hugs back to you, dear one!!

Happy Birthday Z. You sure do have a sweet little one. Wish you both the best. Love to read what is going on with you and your baby. Take Care and God Bless.

I didn’t quite make it before your birthday ended, but I did think of you on April First, lovely Z! Hope you and your baby had a great day! :-)
Barbara Wood (Texas)
@Dawn Conrad–It is so great to have you back. Congratulations on your award, and I hope you had a marvelous trip.
Prayers for your Mom this week. I hope this will bring blessed relief to her.
BTW there is a thread on the forum named “Care and Concern”: or something like that where we can meet to share cour concerns for friends and family.
I have been in and out sporadically because I’m still up to my ears in basketball. The national championship game is tomorrow night, and after that I will be through (either way!). Hugs to all.
Terry Crow
Good luck to the Bears. I won’t pick them to win, as that would be the kiss of death.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Hmmmm . . . maybe we need an “attitude adjustment” here? What can we do to help?
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Thank you, Terry! Don’t pick them tomorrow night either, ok? LOL!
Terry Crow
The last such example of my picks is when I predicted Green Bay would go undefeated. Criswell I’m not.

Happy late B day Z I miss reading your diary!

Well, I was at Santa Anita on Saturday (COLD COLD COLD) to support YOUR MIKEY! He got some 2nd places, but still has the dang #3 wins to reach 5,000. I’ve said “always a bridesmaid never a bide” lol
Hopefully, he will get 1 or 2 wins on Thursday or Friday and the 3rd one in the SA Derby! :o)
Take care. All my love to you and baby prince! xoxoxoxo

Remembering Whirlaway
On this day in 1938, future Triple Crown winner Whirlaway was foaled at Calumet Farm, Lexington, KY
Trained by Ben A. Jones and ridden by Arcaro, Whirlaway won the U.S. Triple Crown in 1941. He also won the Lawrence Realization Stakes and the Travers Stakes that year. He was voted the Horse of the Year in 1941, beating Alsab by 96 votes to 91 in a poll conducted by the Turf and Sport Digest magazine. A year later, Whirlaway repeated his win in the poll, beating Alsab with 76 votes to his rival’s 45.
Max
Keta. Thank you for the reminder of a great horse. I have read a little about him. He was a talented racer with a wonderful character. He had a unique name too, which seemed to fit his personality perfectly. Happy Birthday, Whirlaway.
Terry Crow
I have posted this before, but Whirlaway’s name does not appear that often in the blog. He was scheduled to campaign at Santa Anita in 1942. Then the war happened, and the track was not used for racing for awhile. A lot of people consider 1941 to be the greatest year in the history of sports.

Max
Judy. Thanks for this link. I love that horse.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Me too. In 1942, one year after he won the Triple Crown, he won the Narragansett Special (1 and 3/16 miles) at Narragansett Park, a then famous racetrack in Pawtucket, R. I., with George Woolf aboard. Seven days later he lost by a nose in a match race against Alsab (same distance; Alsab had a 7 lb. allowance). (We certainly were breeding for stamina back then). He put Little Rhody on the Map. Hugs, JB
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Judy,
Once again you have given us a wonderful link! Thanks so much for the biographical article on the fabulous Whirlaway! Mr. Longtail was amazing!
I really enjoyed reading this and watching the Flying Tail race! Some of that “come from behind” magic looked familiar, didn’t it?
Thanks again! Love and hugs!
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Marshall:
So glad you enjoyed the link on Whirlaway. Yes, that “come from behind” magic did look familiar. I wonder if Little Z will inherit that magic. Love and Hugs, JB

Breeders’ Cup 2012 is not certain for Frankel. Here is the latest thinking on Frankel’s racing schedule for his 4th year.
http://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=racing/12/04/02/RACING_Frankel.html&BID=464
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Thanks for the link on Frankel. Sounds like the BC is not on his itinerary. Too bad. Would have been great to see him in the Breeder’s Cup Mile. What do you think? Hugs, JB
Max
Judy: It would have been wonderful to see Frankel run at Santa Anita. However, as Sir Henry Cecil said, Frankel runs on grass and the plan is to take him over a mile in England, if he has the stamina to do that this year. His sire certainly could run the distance. I doubt that they would make the trip to the US for the dirt mile. It could be the Turf or the BCC. The final decision on what to do will rest with the Prince.
By the way, Frankel’s full brother, Noble Mission, will be racing again soon. It does not look like he is in Frankel’s league, but it may be still too soon to know, as he raced only once at 2. He had some minor physical issues last year. Cecil said that Frankel himself has grown taller.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
That’s true, they wouldn’t enter him in the Dirt Mile. Well, it will be interesting to see how he does in a longer race. Think he’ll do fine and he has grown some as well, so that stride should be even better. Will have to see if I can find a recent photo of him to post. I’ll look for a photo of Noble Mission too. Hugs, JB
Max
Judy. Frankel looks like a carbon copy of Nijinsky. He has a star on his forehead which is similar to 12Z. His 3 part brother Bullet Train also has this star as does their mother, Kind. Noble Mission on the other hand takes after Sadler’s Wells and Northern Dancer with a big blaze. Cecil is being careful with Noble Mission because of the weight of expectation on him from being Frankel’s younger brother. The same kind of expectations may weigh on 12Z. Z’s record is just phenomenal, and unlikely to be repeated. We can only hope that the young 12Z does even half as well as she did. No matter what he is a star as Z’s first born, with all due respect to Bernie of course.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
I totally agree with you on all points, but especially on 12Z. He will always be special to all of us no matter what. Just love him. Hugs, JB
signofthetimes
Thanks for the great link, Max.
Can’t imagine a 4 year old like Frankel not working,
her must be a wild man. Sounds like they have a sound
plan for him, which he could race at 5. Too young for stud.
My 17 yo TB was absolutely crazy when
he was not worked and that is 13 years
difference.
signofthetimes
wish, not which
Max
Sign. I would love to see Frankel race for as long as possible. One of his stablemates, Twice Over, is still running at 7. He is a particular favorite of Sir Henry Cecil. You might remember that Twice ran third to the Queen at the 2009 BCC. That was a fantastic race by the Queen.
Terry Crow
@Max, signofthetimes, Vicki B, Keta and all others who have made a request for a horse joke. Here it is, a hall of famer. A man’s car stalls on a country road. When he gets out to fix it, a horse in a nearby field comes up along side the fence and leans over by him. “your trouble is probably in the fuel line,” says the horse. Startled by the abrupt meeting with a talking horse, the man jumped back and started running. He continued to run until he met a farmer. The man tells the farmer his story. “Was it a large white horse with a black mark over its right eye?” asks the farmer. “Yes, yes,” the man replied. “Oh, I wouldn’t listen to her.” says the farmer, “She doesn’t know anything about cars.” I part with some HOF rednecks. You might be a redneck if your church has a happy hour. You might be a redneck if your dog has ever brought home something you cooked for dinner. You might be a redneck if your wedding cake was made by Sara Lee. You might be a redneck if your sister is also your aunt. You might be a redneck if your table cloth is a bed sheet. You might be a redneck if you have at least five dogs in your bed at night.
Sue Fredrick - Wisconsin- Thankful
Terry, glad to see you back in rare form!! Ha, Ha. Loved the horse joke. Hugs

Happy birthday to all who have celebrated recently. I promise to keep up better after tomorrow.

I guess I’m not to smart so I am just going to ask…
Is Zenyattas colts name 12 Zenyatta?
Max
Mary Until he is formally named, the colt is called 12Z for the year of his birth, 2012, and Z, for his mother Zenyatta. The Mosses will name him when they think that it is appropriate. There is no immediate need for a name until he races.
