Happy Friday!
We hope everyone is enjoying the first day of summer. Zenyatta and her two colts certainly are! Alys sent along some photos from her last visit to Zenyatta’s paddock. It’s the perfect way to kick off the weekend!
The Zenyatta Shop also has a small update this week: The “Zenyatta & Colt, April 2, 2013” print is now available in 8″ x 10″ and 11″ x 14″ sizes.
To top it off, here’s a quick video of 13Z being cheeky with his buddy and Alys’ phone…
Enjoy!

Colt Thomas Chippendale dies after Hardwicke Stakes win
(Reuters) – Thomas Chippendale collapsed and died shortly after winning the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot on Saturday.
The four-year-old colt, trained by Lady Cecil, held off Dandino in a thrilling finish on the meet’s final day, but collapsed after passing the finish line.
The 8-1 winner, ridden by Johnny Murtagh, was pronounced dead at the scene after receiving treatment.

Z Nation… Thank you one and all for your courage. I am proud of you.
As Rosemary said, Ann Moss described Zenyatta as always chosing
to be kind. Let us speak no more of what was, but move on together
with our love of Zenyatta, all other horses and God’s creatures as
our only purpose to be here. There are great things to come on the
Zenyatta horizon.

Lady Cecil: “We didn’t realise the horse had collapsed, so we came from the grandstand into the winner’s enclosure feeling so happy and couldn’t understand why it was rather quiet. We didn’t know what had happened, but they say it was very quick and the horse did not suffer.”

Dear Keta,
How absolutely tragic! I am so sorry for the loss of this beautiful and talented horse. This is just so heartbreaking and especially sad for Lady Cecil. Grief piled on top of grief — it is TOO much. Sincere condolences to Lady Cecil and to all connections of Thomas Chippendale. This lovely boy went out with a victory doing what he apparently liked to do. He crossed the finish line and went on to catch up with his wonderful trainer, Sir Henry. RIP Thomas Chippendale

13Z is the best looking TB colt I have seen in awhile! He gets better looking every time I see pictures of him. Boy Z & Tapit sure made a super looking colt!!!! Also loved the pictures of Coz and his jolly ball. Looked like he was having a good time playing! And last but not least, “Z” looks great as usual. Hugs to them all. :)

Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Well . . . . . Moosie DID come out of the gate (albeit reluctantly). Wonder what would have happened if he had gotten a better start? Do we think that he just really doesn’t want to race anymore?
Max
Sandy. This is only Moosie’s 4th flat race, 3rd if you don’t count the one in which he refused to run at all. We must give our hero time to settle in to this type of racing. I’m wildly proud of him that he made the effort, probably sizing things up for next time. Bravo Moose.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Oh dear – I didn’t mean to sound quite so negative. I was thrilled to see him run at all, of course, and didn’t realize how very short his history with “flat” racing was (actually, those courses don’t look so “flat” to me, but I know this means without jumping over things). On another note, can you PLEASE explain the logic behind the horse’s program or saddle number NOT being it’s post position? What DOES the saddle number mean? It is very tricky to watch a race when you don’t know where to look for your horse even to start. Full concentration on the race announcer’s comments is required :-)
Max
Sandy. The saddle cloth number in British racing relates to the weight that the horse carries. Like a lot of things, it’s inverse. The higher the number the less weight that the horse is carrying. It’s designed for betters. The stall (starting gate) numbers are something else again and are the result of a draw. I usually follow the silks to distinguish horses. The colors of The Queen are very distinctive as are Prince Abdullah’s, the latter being very much like Z’s.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
So the horse with saddle number 1 is carrying the most weight then? I sure never would have figured this out so thanks again. Yes, “distinctive” silk colors helped a lot (so many of them seemed to include blue though). A yellow cap is really nifty :-)
SusanL
Euro racing colors are more primary colors or two colors put together.
Many are white and black, most likely they track their horses in a different
way, not by color of silks???
Keta
Max & Sandy
My British tweeps are very pleased that Moosie is Trending on Twitter.
There were 2 pluses: He did leave the stall (gate) and he did gallop.
On to the next race! Go Moosie!
Keta
Max
Heard that Cosimo de Medici was next to Moosie and he also got a bad start. Theory is that Cosimo was influenced adversely by being near the “temperamental” Moose. Not sure but I think another horse did refuse to race. Another one was pulled up. Hope that he’s okay.
Louise Castello
Moosie not leaving the gate kind of makes me giggle!
Max
Moose fans. Moosie has tweeted that he gave the other horses in the Queen Alex too much of a head start. He said that now he will probably be spending more time with Gary, his horse psychologist. Gary at least got him out of the gate and racing.
Louise. Yes, it’s all a great giggle. Moosie is gaining many fans with his efforts on twitter and his lack of them on the race course. Good to have some fun.

Dear Z Family:
Absolutely love these photos of Red Prince and Queen Z. Thank you Lane’s End and Team Z.
Want to thank all of you for your prayers and concern for my Charlie and me. So very grateful. Angela called this morning to tell me that Charlie is definitely improved. I am so relieved, as is Angela. For the first time in a week he let everyone know that he was ready to leave his stall. He’s been on stall rest for all this time and never fussed about it, which is not like him.
I’m going to visit in a bit and I will post again tonight to let you know how he is and how the two new rescue horses are settling in. Angela just picked then up from PA yesterday. They were in the New Holland slaughter auction and she bought both of them. One is a 14 year old Gray mare, Willow (Registered name Historical) and the other is a Paint gelding (not sure how old he is).
Thank you all again for your kindness, your friendship and your prayers. You’re the best. Charlie’s back. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Max:
Charlie is getting there. Yesterday he was pushing on me when I couldn’t peel the paper off the mints fast enough to suit him. Now, that’s more like it. While he was busy chewing, I kissed him on the cheek. He’s so funny and loveable.
Just got an e-mail from our Sandy. She visited the Kentucky Farms with a a friend and met up with our Debbie G. They were passing Lane’s End and saw a group of horses, one of which was a Gray. They stopped and the Gray came over to the fence. Would you believe it was Tasty Temptation. I can’t get over it. Sandy was able to get three photos of her. She has a fly mask on, but her name plate clearly reads Tasty Temptation. Kind of magical isn’t it. We’ve all been wondering how she is. She looks great in the photos.
Also, she sent photos of War Front, Bodie and a fabulous photo of Tiznow. What a gorgeous horse he is; so like Z. Wish I could share these photos with you. You would love seeing TT, I know.
Love and Hugs, JB

Close Hatches upsets Mother Goose at Belmont Park
BY Jerry Bossert New York Daily News June 22, 2013 5:54 PM
Heavy chalk Dreaming of Julia could only be a distant second best behind Close Hatches in Saturday’s Grade I Mother Goose Stakes from Belmont Park.
Sent off as the 1-5 favorite in the field of five, Dreaming of Julia trailed the field turning for home before rallying late to catch Marathon Lady for the place spot, seven and a quarter lengths behind Close Hatches, who prevailed under Kentucky Derby winning jockey Joel Rosario.
It was the first Grade I win in the career of Close Hatches, who earlier this year won the Grade II Gazelle Stakes at Aqueduct.

Dear Z Fans:
Thank you so much for your prayers and well wishes for Charlie. I visited this afternoon and he was more improved. He is alert, eating well and wanted to go outside for the first time in days since he has been on stall rest. He stayed in the round pen for quite a while with Flash, a Paint that Angela bought about a month ago. As long as he continues to improve, we will not need to get him scanned. We’ll probably never know what caused him to become so sick, but it is truly a relief to see him getting back to his normal self. He and Flash enjoyed their carrots and mints. Charlie should gain back the weight and muscle he lost in no time. I’m hoping so. It’s scary how quickly they can go down hill.
Willow the TB mare and Archie, the Paint gelding that Angela rescued from the New Holland slaughter auction, are doing well. They have a way to go to be completely healthy. They both need to gain weight. Willow is eating small amounts about six times a day. She has no interest in treats. Archie, on the other hand, relished the carrots and mints I gave him.
Thank you all again for your kind concern and prayers. I have never known more caring or compassionate people than the Z’sters and Dumplings in Z’s Fan family. Love you all. Hugs, JB

Both of them are underweight, especially the mare, and they need time to get back in good shape. Angela is taking great care of them.
Willow has had four foals, the last one born 2009, named Historical Fact, is still actively racing at Thistledown Downs in Ohio. She last raced and won on 6/12/13.
Thank you again for being a friend. Love you and all of the Z’sters and Dumplings in Z’s Fan Family. Hugs, JB

Dear Marty:
Right now it’s still not definite that Gigi will be going to college with Katie. Katie’s parents are not too keen on having to pay a monthly boarding fee to house Gigi. They would rather Katie utilize one of the college owned horses. Will let you know how it goes. Hugs, JB

These pictures and video are fabulous. Z13 is such a looker. I’d give anything to kiss that sweet little face. Thanks for sharing, LE!
@Judy Berube – I’m so glad that Charlie’s doing better. Our prayers were answered!

Such fun pics of Z13 and his buddy. And the Queen always looks so regal and beautiful. I never tire of seeing them. Thank you so much for sharing their lives with us!
Was watching Royal Ascot when Thomas Chippendale won, then collapsed. I’ve shed tears all day. He must surely be running in God’s green pastures now.
Love,
Stel

Of course Thomas Chippendale is in the Big Pasture. Animals give us so much joy. They get their own special place in heaven, and as long as we hold them in our hearts, and celebrate all they are and do for us, they never truly die. :-)

Beautifully said, Pati!
