Happy Tuesday!
Zenyatta’s youngest boy was weaned last week, and it all went very well. Alys sent us some photos before and after, and as you can see the boys are quite large and independent at this time. Z is happy to be back with her old friend Life Is Sweet and they definitely seem to share a bond. We’ll have more photos to share with you soon.

Dear Zenyatta Family,
I am so far behind here, I will never catch up. Sandy made me aware that there had been inquiries about my safety regarding the flooding here in Colorado. There is some continual flooding in parts of Aurora, my town, but my area of town has not been flooded. The state, though, is devastated. My step-daughter came down from Cheyenne, Wyoming on Wednesday morning to help me with some things that afternoon and on Thursday morning. She intended to go back home Thursday afternoon, but is still here. The main highway continues to be closed up to the state line. She has now decided the only way she can get back home is to go to Nebraska then go back from there to Wyoming. She talked to some friends who did that last night and it was safe. So, her normal 2 hour drive will become a 5 hour drive. She will do that in the morning after a good night’s sleep.
Dear Ingrid, I was so sorry to read of your loss of your mother. She absolutely rebounded from some terrible falls in the past, but, a person’s body can only withstand so much. I hope you are comforted knowing she doesn’t have to struggle anymore. I also hope you were able to remember some happier birthday times yesterday to help you with your special day,
Dear Zentastic Captain, Sue. It was good to read that your mother’s surgery went well. I certainly hope she has a full, successful recovery.
I was so saddened to read about Mentor Cane. He was such a handsome boy with, I felt, great potential. I know he had the best of care and training, but those glorious creatures are so fragile. My sincere condolences to all his connections and all who cared for him.
This week’s handicapping race is tough. I gave it a shot, but not a lot of confidence behind it. Good luck to all with your wagers.
My computer will be going to the computer Dr. tonight and will be gone for a few days. I do hope to be able to come here regularly before long. Hugs to all Marty R.

Good to hear from you. Terrible flooding in your area; glad you were not in the worst of it. Good luck with your computer repairs. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Marty R.,
Good to hear from you and that your part of town has not been flooded. Hope all goes well with your computer so you can get back to regular posting.
Lots of Hugs
Trina Nagele
Dear Marty, so glad your part of town is OK, and I hope your step-daughter will have a safe, albeit long, trip back to Cheyenne. My main computer has gone to the computer hospital too this afternoon, and I am relying now on my somewhat high-strung laptop to see me through. I hope your computer will be back home with you and acting fit as a fiddle soon. Thanks for letting us know. Hugz.
Ann NC
Good to know you are safe, Marty. I am so sorry for all folks suffering because of the flooding.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Marty R.–Glad to have you checking in. Hoping your daughter gets home safely. I had heard I-25 was closed but had no idea it was all the way to WY. Hugs.

Dear Marty R:
Glad you’re safe – and safe journey to your daughter. Hugs KathyR.

Thank You so much for this. Just love Secretariat.
Many prayers being said for Dan, Orfevre, on Sunday and all horses and Jockeys racing.
God Speed and God bless them all and us.

Peggy. Secretariat only ran on turf once and he won well. He was incredible. It is unwise to compare horses over generations, but it seems that Big Red like Z was all alone in his own league. Watching him run is always jaw dropping. He is so inspiring that he brings a tear to your eye for the sheer beauty of it all.

OK been looking on some of the racing sites
I will admit i’m probably naturally as nervous as my boy Orfevre . I’m having trouble reading some of this french stuff.
They say the Prix Foy at Longchamp is at 3.15 on 9-15-13 as BlueGrass girl said.. What time woud that be for us. Don’t even know if I’m reading the time right. Oh gosh.
Hope someone carries that trial
Love Ya Orfevre.

Dear Peggy If it’s 3 15pm in France ,they are an hour ahead of the UK and I think you are 5hrs behind us so it would be about 9 15am for you.hope that makes sense Rooting for big O!!! hugs Sheena

Dear Sheena,
Thanks a million. I’ll be up looking for the race. I’m so nervous. So hope he does well and stays safe. Watch nobody carry the race here in the states. I’ll find it somewhere. thank you again for posting the time. The site I was on the stuff was just hard to read.

Dear Max Wonderful memories of Big Red, maybe one day our Queen’s little Red???.I always felt Joesph gave Camelot too much to do last year n the St Leger. This year he was on a proven stayer, yet he was always tracking the leader, maybe he learned his lesson. Moosie looked great on the gallops, probably back at Cheltenham next month. To run,or not to run, that is the question!!! neigh Sheena
Max
Sheena. I don’t know what happened to Camo in that race. You might be right. It could have been a tactical miscalculation. Camo’s had some problems getting back into stride since his colic surgery. We will have to see if he will race in the Arc. That will be a star studded affair for sure. I’m hoping against hope for the Big O. Let the racing gods smile on the grand ole chestnut. He deserves a win.
I see that Moosie is wearing mauve halters again. Cannot see Hovis doing that. Moosie is like Hamlet, moody and enigmatic. We won’t know if he will run until the start, and even then it’s not certain that he’ll keep going. Neigh!

However, YES!!! Congrats to Dinky D and Mary P – great bets ladies! Very brave of Mary to bet on an unraced filly (and the TV commentators were yucking it up before the race that she was left in that one with the boys rather than going in the Natalma with the girls – guess she and her trainer showed them!!)

Horse Racing in Japan
2013 News September 13, 2013
Orfevre, Kizuna spotlighted in Arc trials
On the eve of the trials for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, all eyes are on two of Japan’s brightest stars – 2011 Triple Crown champion Orfevre and this year’s Derby winner Kizuna.
In France along with two other Japan-based runners, this dynamic duo has leapt into the spotlight for their respective trial runs, the Prix Foy and Prix Niel, set to be run on Sunday, Sept. 15 at Longchamp Racecourse.
The Yasutoshi Ikee-trained Orfevre, who captured the Prix Foy last year, has already won the top spot on the tote boards among the expected dozen runners, which include Stellar Wind from the stable of Tomohito Ozeki. Orfevre and Stellar Wind are likely to go to the gate the first and fourth choice in the Foy, with competition red hot with the likes of double Derby winner Camelot and Dunaden aboard.

Hey Judy
I did not see Marjiv’s spill. The guys on TVG were talking about it. Sounded like it was an early race today. They were being very guarded with what they said. Sounding on the good side for Marjiv. Martin went down in the close to the last race at Belmont. Spill in among other horse. the horse got loose. Martin did get up. They said they would update when they got some official info on it. I had to do some errands and have not heard any more. Hope they are OK.

Lots of jockey spills today. Majiv Maragh was thrown from his mount in the Natalma at Woodbine. His horse was in the lead, veered in and hit the rail throwing him off and the horse behind appeared to jump over him. Horses all okay. Good news was he was alert and talking, able to move all extremities. Thinking broken ribs, but not confirmed.
I have not heard on any of the other jockeys and their mounts.
Praying for all of them!

Woodbine: Llanarmon wins maiden in Natalma Stakes (RACE REPLAY)
By Ron Gierkink Daily Racing Form 09/14/2013 4:47PM
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Llanarmon ($20.40) graduated in dramatic style Saturday at Woodbine in the Grade 2 Natalma Stakes, in which the favored Ready to Act unseated jockey Rajiv Maragh, who appeared to escape serious injury.
Llanarmon (right), ridden by Emma-Jayne Wilson, wins the Grade 2 Natalma Stakes by three-quarters of a length Saturday at Woodbine.
Ready to Act stalked the front-running Unspurned in the one-mile turf route for 2-year-old fillies before making the lead early in the stretch. Ready to Act ducked in at the eighth pole, and a trailing horse came over the top of the fallen Maragh. Ready to Act, a New York shipper trained by Chad Brown, came back fine.
http://www.drf.com/news/woodbine-llanarmon-wins-maiden-natalma-stakes
Warning: The spill is replayed several times. Here is what happened.
This is a 2 year old race-babies. Raj whacked Ready To Act with the whip.
She ducked out and dumped him. Problem: trailing horse ran over him.
It did take a long time to remove him from the track. He was alert and moving.
Argued with EMT’s about going to the hospital. He did.
What I have read is he has rib injuries-do not know more than that.
Raj is one very lucky jockey. It could have been so much worse.
Ready To Act ran with the rest to the wire. Read that she is okay.
Waiting for further updates-probably in morning.
Janet Newman
Thanks BGG, I did not catch all the details on the race.

Hi Max and Sheena,
Enjoyed your post about Secretariat, Max. Secretariat hooked me all those years ago. My wedding day was May 19, 1973, the day Secretariat won the Preakness. A nice word play on “sheer beauty,” Max. My last name is Sheere! lol
Sheena, I enjoy Downton Abbey a lot! Enjoy!

Our poet-laureate, Trina, is having computer problems and wasn’t able to get the following posted so she asked me to do it for her:
Our dear Kimberly Potter hasn’t posted much in quite some time, so newbies here won’t recognize her from the clues which start her birthday poem, so I’ll just spill the beans up front that today is Kimberly Potter’s birthday. Kimberly, I wish you all the best—it was great getting to meet you and your lovely daughter Carly at the Breeders’ Cup last year–I hope you’ll be making a return visit to Santa Anita for the BC 2013! Here’s a repeat of your poem from 2011. Love in Dumplinghood, Trina
A Poem for a September 14th Birthday, 2011
Whose birthday has come?
Hint number one:
She’s not on a coast.
Hint number two:
She has a singular boast–
She says when she signs each post
That in her huge state
It’s she who loves Z the most!
Have you got her?
Yes, it’s our Kimberly Potter,
Who’s quick to relate
She’s Z’s number one fan
In all of Montan’—
No one’s love for Z could burn hotter!
She’s a mother, though no longer a wife,
Who greets each new day
In her big-hearted way
With verve and lust
And a great trust
In the goodness of life.
She works hard
And plays harder
With all her life’s ardor.
As a legal assistant,
She’s always persistent
In dealing with that legal blotter–
It’s not in her to be a rotter.
While she’s working,
She’s never shirking
Though sometimes she’s wishing
That she could be fishing!
Yes, fishing is her favorite sport
When she leaves behind
Those matters of court.
And though she loves her job,
Her family’s her first heart throb.
Remember when her little grandchild-to-be
Was threatening to come way, way too early
Into this world’s hurly-burly?
Kimberly did her very best
To help her daughter-in-law rest
So baby would stay
Within her mom’s girth
Till the right day
Should come for her birth
Sometime in October.
We’re all so happy
Those efforts met with success,
And that crisis is over!
Since that worry has passed,
Kimberly’s ready now for a blast,
And we wish her a day filled with mirth.
Surely she’ll forget household chores
And enjoy instead the great outdoors.
Will she go camping in a canvas tent?
(Hope it’s rain-resistant!)
Will she be fishing with a fly
’Neath that big sky
And have a fresh-caught fish fry?
Will she
With family
Round a roaring campfire lie
And maybe sing “O, Susana”?
In any event,
Let’s now drink a toast
To the lady up in Montana
Who claims ’tis she who loves Z the most—
Yes, by that boast you’ll always spot her—
Our dear Kimberly Potter!
Happy birthday, Kimberly, and many, many more!

Dear Kathy R, Max, Sandy, Judy, thank you all for your responses on Anti-Bleeding medications. Still don’t know how I feel about this. Think this will be debated for a long time to come.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Peggy:
I think if Lasix is used safely and correctly and it prevents horses from bleeding, then it may be a good thing.
As you say there will continue to be a debate on whether there are any harmful side effects that make it’s use plausible or not. Hugs, JB
Kathy R.
Dear Peggy:
I don’t know that I was all that helpful in my comments on lasix usage: I certainly am not comfortable in feeling that I need to defend the “Euros” as Max calls them. I do however think that Australian racing is the best in the world and make no apologies for that. Just an aside. Coolmore has not sent a team to race in the Melbourne Cup since 2008. In that race Aidan O’Brien sent out three horses (Septimus, Alessandro Volta and Honolulu who finished 18th, 20th and 21st). The stewards were not impressed with his tactics and recalled him to the course to explain himself – which he did. Locals considered the tactics suicidal. The stewards took no action against Coolmore. I know this has no relationship to the lasix issue, just my way of saying that we are tough in the way racing is conducted here and expect standards from even the greatest in racing. Cheers, KathyR.
Max
Kathy R. Horses who race in North America from Europe are called Euros by almost everyone, not just me. Steve Haskins calls them that and most racing writers call them Euros to distinguish them from horses born in North America. They are also usually called “invaders”. One Canadian paper had a headline last week which said “Wise Dan Invades Canada.” It was meant affectionately. Dan got a rare standing ovation at Woodbine for his efforts. His people are thinking of racing him in other Canadian races because Dan gets first class treatment during his invasions. It’s the horse that matters, not its nationality.
Kathy R.
Dear Max:
I meant no offfense in attributing the word Euros to you – had not heard that term used, except on the blog. We also refer to the imports coming to the Spring Racing Carnival as invaders. Dermot Weld (used to race a lovely mare called Profound Beauty) was one of the early ones – as were the Japanese. Thankfully people are happy to see internationals coming to the Carnival – and some trainers can hardly complain given they have been to Europe purchasing staying types since the trend has been for sprinters down here. But the story about Coolmore is now into racing folklore – as I indicated, the mighty Aidan was most upset to be taken to task by stewards. And as you say, it’s the horse that matters, which is why watching the race that day, we were horrified at the way he sent them out so fast and hard, only to have them end up lame at the end. Was not Aidan’s best day at the races. Cheers, KathyR.
