Happy Tuesday!
Zenyatta’s youngest boy was weaned last week, and it all went very well. Alys sent us some photos before and after, and as you can see the boys are quite large and independent at this time. Z is happy to be back with her old friend Life Is Sweet and they definitely seem to share a bond. We’ll have more photos to share with you soon.

It’s true, Carol. I just picked it up on a TWEET from Brian Zipse. I’m just devastated. I had followed this colt for over a year and was so excited to see him grow…..
My thoughts are with the Mosses, John & Dottie and the whole barn.
I don’t know what else to say, except that I started a CONDOLENCES thread on the Forum. (Someone else had posted “Moss horse dead” and I thought I’d start a new thread because that one didn’t feel right to me.)
MENTOR CANE has a fan site with some beautiful photos: http://vk.com/mentor_cane

Abigail,
I posted on the forum side that you started. I am absolutely heartsick about this.
So, so sorry for all concerned.

he was just gorgeous and just getting started ..improving all the time…visually impressive…RIP lovely boy

carol. Agree completely. This is very upsetting. That horse was handsome and only just beginning his career. Tragic loss for all connections.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Horrible, horrible news. RIP dear Mentor Cane and Skittles N Bob. Two in one day! Just awful. Condolences to the connections and all who had befriended them in the barn as well.
@Sally B. –thank you so much for all your hard work. Hope all goes well.
@All Dumplings who are concerned about the less famous horses–I got an e-mail from the director of Panhandle Equine Rescue in FL. There is a horse named Capona who is struggling to live. Can we please pray?

Barbara Wood,
I certainly will pray for this lovely mare, hope she has the will to live. We should have her talk to dear Betsy Rose, whom I’d take home in a minute, and keep in my house she’s so adorable. She has the heart of a lion to come back from hell the way she did. PUC
Barbara Wood (Texas)
I agree!
Kathy R.
Dear Barbara Wood:
This makes me feel so ashamed of the human race: thank God we have such generous rescue groups who just keep on caring for these poor animals. I know St Francis is busy in this nasty world, but I’d be very grateful if he could pass his hand over this lovely little mare – even if it is to help her over the Rainbow Bridge. Do we have any photos of how the brave Betsy Rose is getting on? Hugs through tears, KathyR.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Dear Kathy, Yes! Update photos of the sweet miracle girl Betsy Rose were posted on the Horse and Man Blog on September 5: http://horseandman.com/page/3/

Heartbroken. RIP dear lovely boy. I’ve been waiting for your big race to come along. I know you were going to be a great one as soon as you had it all figured out. Some days racing is just to painful to follow. Condolences to Ann and Jerry Dottie and John.
Sue Fl CPRC
I agree today is to painful. I can’t imagine the pain the rider and crew felt this morning. I still fell like crap and I only saw him on TV. Menty had something special we all felt it. We all fell in love with him even thought he had a rough start. I was so thrilled with his last race. That is what it is now his last race.

Devastated to hear about Mentor Cane. He was one of my favorites and showed so much promises. My condolences to the Mosses, John and all of Barn 55.
Randy
Heartbroken for both of these beautiful horses… heartbroken that this kind of thing happens over and over even when they’re in the best of hands. It’s hard to understand how something so powerful can also be so fragile, but they are. It makes me appreciate even more the ones who can get through an entire racing career unscathed.
Too sad for words.
Terry Crow
It is amazing that their legs can support a 1000 pound animal.
Randy
It IS amazing, especially with the terrific pounding those legs take at the end of each race. It’s no wonder that when they do break down, so many times the bones are completely shattered.
Patricia in far Northern CA
What a shame, such a nice and promising youngster, just beginning to bloom. My heartfelt condolences to the Mosses, John and Dottie, and all the Team.
We know these things happen, but it’s always hard to take… and we are all just the “fans,” imagine how difficult it is for those directly involved.

Mentor Cane Fatally Injured in Morning Work
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Thursday, September 12, 2013 1:42 PM
Mentor Cane, second in the grade I Foxwoods King’s Bishop Stakes Aug. 24 at Saratoga Race Course, was euthanized on Sept. 12 following an injury he incurred during a morning workout.
The 3-year-old suffered a right-hind lateral condylar fracture and a comminuted right-hind P1 fracture, according to Dr. Anthony Verderosa, chief examining veterinarian for the New York Racing Association.
Trained by John Shirreffs and a homebred for owners Jerry and Ann Moss, Mentor Cane was a colt by Mizzen Mast out of Vixana. He posted a five-length maiden victory July 6 at Belmont Park in his third start. He was fourth in the Amsterdam Stakes (gr. II) July 28 at Saratoga prior to the Foxwoods King’s Bishop.

Guys, I don’t know how much longer I can hang in with all of these deaths. I love racing and know this is part of it but it just gets more difficult with each one. Thank God Zenyatta and Rachel are safe at their farms.
I pray for protection of my favorite boys, Muchie and Lea.
Max
shirlee. Know how you feel. Very distressed about Mentor Cane. Hoping that Dan and Uncle Johnny come home safely at Woodbine on Sunday. If any of your favorites are racing this Sunday, Uncle Johnny will conveniently be out of the country.
shirleeinindy
They aren’t. I will say a prayer for Dan and the dratted Johnny. He appears to be a both a fine rider and man. Just seems to always be going against my pets.

It is so SAD to see such talent silenced by death. I’am heart broken. The wonderious efforts put forth by all of the connections is heartwrenching. I pray the offspring of our Belove Zenny, will be fruitful for their Connections, and may they stay healthy and sound. It is not so fair, when such an exciting endeavour has such a stiff price to pay when gone arwry.

RIP Big Boy. This was tragic news about Mentor Cane. He was a future Super Star. Thoughts and Prayers go out to John, Dottie, Ann, Jerry and all the connections.

Dear Max Seems Moosie was declared to run in the Irish St Leger but has got too much of a “summer belly”!!hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Moose is kidding us again. His name is not among the 50 declared horses, as far as I can see. He told us last July that he was going back to jumps, about the same time that he was supposed to attend boot camp with Gary to learn to come out of the gate. With jumps, as you know, there are no gates/stalls. Their absence however has not prevented our Moosie from refusing to run.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Have been “on the road” today – coming back from a few days in western New York on the shores of Lake Chautauqua. Will write more about that later – have just seen the posts with this devastating news about Mentor Cane. RIP beautiful horse. He seemed on the cusp of something great, and as many others have already said, it is difficult to comprehend how fragile these horses really are. One bad step away from tragedy. Condolences to the Mosses, John, and all of the staff who worked with him in both California and New York. RIP also for Skittles N Bob and prayers for Capona.

Heartbroken,
Rest in Peace Mentor Cane, So Sorry, Ann, Jerry, John, Dottie. Your in my prayers.

Just a Happy site I saw this morning.
On my way to work early this morning i passed a farm van full of horses. Well It looked like about six in there. I speeded up to see if I could see them inside. As I started going by (It was on the Interstate highway) They all had there heads almost out the side windows Looking so intently at the traffic. It was such a beautiful sight. They all looked so happy and looked like they were enjoying the ride. They were heading towards Florida as I am not far from the Florida line. Wondered if they were coming from Kentucky.
Nice remembering this site after hearing such bad news today.
There were bars on those windows but they were sure trying to look out. They were gorgeous.
Randy
Peggy, I hope they were going someplace wonderful!
This was a particularly sad day… maybe it seemed worse because we kind of know the people involved and feel a special connection to them and their horses.
I think we’re all ready for a dose of Hovis tomorrow, I know I am.

Me too. Love and Hugs, JB
Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
Hovis indeed will make a happier tomorrow, but at least Peggy saw some happy horses while on the road today.
I still am in shock how quickly a gorgeous horse can get injured and that becomes his/her fate. Poor Mentor Cane & Skittles.
Sally B
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Sally, Can’t wait to see Hovis tomorrow too. Just need to see those happy horses.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Randy & Judy,
I hope those horses were going somewhere wonderful too. It said the name of the farm on the side of the van but I have forgotten it now.
I was thinking this morning gosh I sure would like to have one of those horses. I want another horse so bad.
And, OMG we sure do need to see Hovis tomorrow..
Max
Peggy. I like to see horses looking out of their vans too. Our Danny is probably on the road now to Toronto. He has to be in his stall by 11 am tomorrow. Apparently last year he arrived at his stall, took a few looks and passes around it to check it out, and immediately went to sleep. Dan’s just great.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Max
Glad I didn’t get caught for speeding this morning. Had to catch that van. They were some really pretty horses enjoying their ride.
I have been thinking about Dan this evening he should be in his van right now. I think I heard them say before that he travels well. so maybe by early morning he will be there. I hope he has a good night ride. Can’t wait till Sunday.
Terry Crow
Dan is great. There was a feature on TVG the other night indicating that some rating service places Game on Dude above Dan. If GOD were to go against horses which were above the allowance level, the result would not be good for him. He has been carefully managed by Baffert much in the way that Primo Carnera was by his boxing promoters.

Reading about these breakdowns reminds us all again how blessed we were to have our beloved Zenny healthy throughout her racing career. She is such a large mare and to have raced at the highest level so long without incident is amazing. The angel John always pinned to her browband saw her home safely. I am sure the Mosses, John and Dottie are heartsick about MC. May there be better days ahead.
Rosemary McCauley
Just heard on HRTV about the tragic loss of the very talented Mentor Cane. My sympathy goes out to the Mosses and to John, Dottie and his crew at the barn. It has to be very difficult for all of them.

Rosemary-Good to see you posting. Just wish the subject was different.
