Happy Tuesday!
Zenyatta’s youngest boy was weaned last week, and it all went very well. Alys sent us some photos before and after, and as you can see the boys are quite large and independent at this time. Z is happy to be back with her old friend Life Is Sweet and they definitely seem to share a bond. We’ll have more photos to share with you soon.

Dear Ingrid and Shirlee:
I love MMM too. Shirlee, he was born June 15, 2008. Did you ever read the article about his foaling. I will link it below. I read where the same thing happened with another baby foaled by his Dam.
Mikey is a terrific jokey; always puts the horse’s welfare first. Love and Hugs, JB

Thank you Judy. He was a late foal and just turned 5 in June (I think it is June.) So glad he had Mike on board for the Sunshine. Mike knows when there is something not right with a horse and will pull him/her up rather than risk further injury.

shirlee-Thanks for pointing this out. It has now gotten to the point that MMM has the advantage.

Attn Cappers!!
Go in and check your picks as there seems to be a glitch in their giddy-up big time!!!! When picking 1 horse to w/p/s it changes to the horse above your choice so you have to choose the horse below and then it will show the one you want!!
Don’t know how many of you will see this before post time but I just discovered it and don’t know what else to do.
I thought I was going nuts and maybe they’ll fix before the race, if not how will it count??
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Mary P and Cappers:
Ran into the same problem. In my case it didn’t matter, because I went with long shots. I hope those of you who picked the winners were recorded correctly. Hugs, JB

I was too late to change, but would not have made a difference. It sounds like it was an exciting race..

Maryp,
I’ve checked mine at least 4 times and it was always as you said. I thought it was this loaner computer I’m using ( fighting with is more like it). I’ll try once more with your suggestion. Hope it’s not too late. Marty
Maryp NY
Marty R,
I can’t figure out what was going on because I chose #6 Fury K to show and it showed Java’s War as my selection – I ended up choosing WTC to show and the “ticket” showed Fury K BUT I won $28 on WTC to show so I guess the original pick would have worked out even though the “ticket” said something different?? Shoulda just left well enough alone. OH My Goodness….enough already!!! Hope you won.
On to next week!
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
I wish it had changed MY bet (groan). Sometimes it’s best to go with what seems “obvious” I guess and not worry about the odds. Winning something would have been better than nothing. Note to self – when a horse has won 3 times out of 5 at the track in question, take that seriously. I was “this close” to betting Battier to show. Big congrats to those who won – especially Baby Tapit who continues to make it look easy.

Congrats to your girl beautiful Gabbiano. Made it look easy. Nobody was claimed out of that race. so she remains with her same connections. Love and Hugs, JB

Thank You very very much for helping bring us War Pass’s Filly Gabbiano. Love her dearly. Met her when she was just a 2year old baby at the Florida sale. Fell in love with her. She won race 7 today at Fariplex/Barretts. Thank You first Dear Lord and Thank You Mr. Farish

Dear Judy,
Thank you so very much for letting me know the claiming status of Gabby’s race. When I was posting on the other page almost forgot that was a claiming race. I panicked. Thank You so much again for letting me know she wasn’t claimed.

Sheena. Thought of you and Hovis when I came across this story. Sovereign is still growing so that he might yet surpass US record holder, Big Jake, who lives in Wisconsin and is a local hero. It would be great to meet either one of them.

Great story and pictures Max – thanks for sharing :-) He really is something, and the reporter has a delightful sense of humor.

Oh my. I just loved this story. I’m a sucker for these “gentle giants” — every time I think about owning a horse, I think either a Canadian or one of these big horses.

Dear Max,
Thanks for this link. What a beauty Sovereign is!
Great story! So happy that he was rescued and now has a loving owner.

Thank you so much for this Max. Sovereign is magnificent. I wonder if our Wisconsinites Sally B and Sue Fredrick have met Big Jake.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Thanks Max,
Even though I’m from Wisconsin I hadn’t heard of “Big Jake”. I enjoyed looking at the beautiful “Sovereign” and reading his story, will have to check further Into Jake’s story, it doesn’t say what city he is from. hugs
jeanne
Thanks so much for these lovely photos!
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max Thank for a great article about the Gentle Giant Sovereign.I wonder what our Hovis would think of him. I remember reading about Big Jake once.Given my lack of height a mini-horse would be more to my liking!!! Hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Yes, what would Hovis think? It seems like Sovereign’s best buddy is a filly, Poppy. You know how Hovis likes the mares. I found it interesting that one of The Queen Elizabeth’s horses held the UK record until Sovereign grew into it. Best part of this story is that his new owner gave him a very good home and tended to his health needs. Being his vet must be a real work out.
Maryp NY
Thank you Max for such a good story of Sovereign and how his owner found him and is now taking care of him with affection. He is a grand looking mellow fellow.

Second Straight Grade I Win for Close Hatches
By Frank Angst The Blood-Horse Updated: Saturday, September 21, 2013 7:02 PM
Already good, Juddmonte Farms’ 3-year-old filly Close Hatches appears to be taking things to another level as summer turns to fall. The First Defence filly registered her second straight grade I victory Saturday, Sept. 21 in the $1 million Cotillion Stakes
at Parx Racing.
Favored in the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-old fillies, Close Hatches passed Test Stakes (gr. I) winner Sweet Lulu turning for home and held off all challengers at the wire to register a 2-length win. Steve Beneto’s Sweet Lulu, by Mr. Greeley, continued well to the wire to earn her first two-turn grade I placing, edging third-place finisher Street Girl by a nose. Rontos Racing Stable’s Street Girl, by Street Hero, secured her first grade I placing.

Hi Sheena,
Happy Sunday!
Pati-Caz Girl
Hi Z family,
Hope everyone is well and healthy. There seems to be a bug floating about campus and almost everyone has had it. It’s horrible!
I will say that I found another college like Caz, but much closer to home and much cheaper. If they give me a good scholarship to transfer, I might just do it. It’s called Midway College and it’s in Kentucky. As much as I’ll miss everyone here, I’m not used to this weather and it’s only been a month, and we’ve already had a date rape issue and a hate crime. Maybe I’m just too far from home; I’m just uncomfortable here. You can’t account for your classmates when you do campus tours, and I love the campus; just not some of the people. I’ve given it almost a month and a half, and I’ll try until the end of this year, but if nothing changes, I’m transferring to Midway College.
Max
Pati. Sorry to hear this news. A month however is not enough time to make major changes. Give it to the end of the year like you are planning and it might look differently. Glad that you have a Plan B. I will be hoping for a mild winter for you. When it gets colder in NY, just think that you could be in the true north, i.e. Canada, where sometimes -30 with 12 feet of blowing snow can be a nice day. Those Canadian TBs often escape to Florida. Hang in.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Pati:
Sorry to hear about the issues there. Very upsetting. It’s good that you will give it ’til the end of the year to make a decision. Please let us know how you are doing. Love and Hugs, JB
shirleeinindy
Pati, I am a Midway alum. Great place if you are into horses. WinStar, Stonestreet, Three Chimneys and Lanes End are very near by. I do agree with Judy that you should try to stick it out for a year and then make a decision.
Midway, the town itself, is a nice place also.

Agree. They both look wonderful. Red never seems to have had an awkward stage.

The pictures rotate a bit so it took a minute to see what you all were looking at here (well worth the wait!!). If others are taking a look, the point is that Zenny and her Red Prince are the cover girl and guy of the calendar being offered here.

Barretts at Fairplex: Quinonez avoids serious injury in fall Saturday, agent says
By Brad Free Daily Racing Form 09/22/2013 11:46AM
POMONA, Calif. – Jockey Alonso Quinonez is believed to have sustained a hairline fracture of his tailbone after he went down in a spill Saturday at Barretts at Fairplex, agent Jerry Palermo said.
Preliminary reports Saturday suggested that Quinonez sustained head trauma. However, indications Sunday morning were more optimistic. The rider’s helmet was cracked, but it appears that he did not sustain serious head injury.
Quinonez was airlifted Saturday to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center, where he remained Sunday. Palermo, who was booking mounts for Quinonez during the Los Angeles County Fair meet, said Sunday, “He’s good, he’s talking. He’s going to be okay.”
Quinonez, 30, would be sidelined about five weeks with a tailbone fracture. Quinonez had won seven races from 58 mounts at Barretts, including a stakes victory on Luckarack in the Governor’s Cup Handicap.

Sheena. Did you see the photo of Sprinter Sacre in the Post today? He looks terrific after his summer vacation. They say that he will stay racing at 2 miles, but some think that he can do 3 miles with no problem. Wonder if Moosie will appear at Cheltenham, and will he race?
Roberta
I just happened to think of a name I liked for our red prince, and thought I would run it by you guys, and anyone else who might be listening; how about “Tap The Zen”?
Roberta
Forgot to add; he has always been so mature, and has such presence, a Zen quality!

Dear Max I missed that! drat!!! He’s a really handsome horse, Nicky said he’s planning to stick to the 2 miles this season maybe next year??Moosie may decide to dig his hooves in again not all that long to wait now!!hugs Sheena

Dear Max Found Sprinter Sacre, he looks fabulous after his summer break. Here’s to a great jumps season for him. hugs Sheena

Sheena. Super impressive horse. He looks to be in very good condition, fabulous coat. Moose will keep us all guessing. You just never know. Don’t forget he finished 2 to Sprinter last year on a day that he decided to race. Pretty good result.

Hi Z family, Zenny, Coz & Zenji (my nickname for Z-13):
I’ve been laying low most of today because I can feel a cold coming on. Not much of a surprise given the fact our temperatures here have ranged from almost 86 F to 35 F in just 10 days……
BUT I have finally learned that to let these conversations go here for not more than 2 days before jumping in!
Case In Point: HOVIS
I started reading posts here a long ways back & this guy HOVIS kept popping up. Who on earth was HOVIS I asked myself. Clearly, a horse. Sheena’s horse? All very confusing (as HOVIS would have understood) ! Finally, I located HOVIS @ Horse And Hound and read all his diaries…. and understood why he’s such a FAN FAVOURITE here!!!!
QUESTION: Do you write HOVIS, Sheena?
Not much newsy stuff to report. But there is one story I think that you’ll appreciate, about my girl, Daisy (a Husky/Malamute-Shepherd mix).
Last week, we were out walking when Daisy decided to stop to visit with one of our homeless people’s dogs. As the dogs sniffed & wagged at one another, the owner asked me if Daisy was an INUIT dog. I said that I knew she was a Northern dog but not much else. He seemed convinced that she was an INUIT girl, so he said something unpronounceable to Daisy and BANG! She sat down.
When I asked him what he’d said to her, he told me it was SIT in INUKTITUK!!!! Then he did it one more time, to show me that it wasn’t a fluke.
SOMETIMES REAL LIFE IS MORE STORIED THAN FICTION!!!!
Love & hugs to all and peppermint kisses to my Big Girl
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Just amazing, Abigail. I have a friend with a ShiTsu(sp?) who knows Vietnamese.
Abigail_1849
Really? Wow — impressive. I’ve decided not to ask Daisy anything in INUKTITUK though (I know 2 words only) because she was badly treated before I rescued her (and is still, 2 yrs. later, getting her confidence back) and I don’t want to call up those memories. But I was impressed & delighted to learn more about her background. (And went back the next day with some $$$ and cookies for our informant!)
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Dear Abigail,
Sorry you had to hunt for Hovis – many of us would have been glad to give you the information. He also has a Facebook fan page of sorts – started by some of his fans in England. It’s a “group” but very easy to indicate you wish to join, and his Mum often posts additional tidbits and pictures there. She was SO amazed to learn that he had a legion of followers here on Zenny’s blog, and has stopped by occasionally to say hi. Here is the link to the FB page:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/134224666643571/
If this doesn’t work for some reason, it’s called “We Love Hovis and his Friday diaries on H&H”
Hope you feel better soon – very changeable weather here too which is not an easy adjustment. Amazing story about your Daisy’s ability to understand something besides English.

Sheena. Forgot to mention that I recently read that some of Moosie’s people have purchased Mission to Mars. Moosie is his stablemate and calls him Marty. They both are sons of Presenting, whom I think is also Denman’s father? Anyway the connections are now a little concerned that Marty might have already fallen under the influence of Moosie.
