Weaning, Before and After

Happy Tuesday!

Zenyatta’s youngest boy was weaned last week, and it all went very well. Alys sent us some photos before and after, and as you can see the boys are quite large and independent at this time. Z is happy to be back with her old friend Life Is Sweet and they definitely seem to share a bond. We’ll have more photos to share with you soon.

    And, while we are talking about favorite horses, this is a great description of Trigger by Bob Duncan (gate whisperer)

    But last fall Quality Road was a basket case after “freaking out,” as some called it, at the starting gate before the richest race in North America, the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park in California. As shocked and appalled spectators and TV viewers around the world watched, Quality Road and the starting-gate crew clashed — the big horse kicking, bucking and rearing, refusing to enter the gate, and gate workers pushing, cracking a buggy whip and finally blindfolding the horse.
    The battle ended when Quality Road was scratched. The next morning Pletcher called Duncan at home in Saratoga Springs. A week and a half later, with the horse back home at Belmont Park on Long Island, Duncan met Quality Road, face-to-face.
    “It was the darnedest thing,” he says. “I don’t think I spent 15 or 20 minutes with him, moving him around, before I felt like I was working with Trigger or something.
    “I’d wag my finger, and he would back up. Point at his shoulder, and he would do a forward pivot. I said to Todd, ‘I don’t see the problem.’ And Todd said, ‘I don’t think there is one.’ ”
    The problem at the Breeders’ Cup, Duncan says, was not a starting-gate issue. It was a leadership issue.
    “It’s in a horse’s nature to wake up every morning and try to advance their position in the pecking order,” he says. “They’re going to figure it out, and then they’re going to be fine with it.”

    Dear Barbara,

    Speaking of dogs and since you’re in TX, did you ever get to see David Hartwig’s dog Skidboot? He was so incredibly intelligent. I was sorry when he passed. Loved his performances on Animal Planet and on Oprah.

I was pleased with the collection of photos and found this great print source online….and bought the 2 prints from the Goodwood Cup of Kincsem that appear in the article! I can hardly wait until they arrive. I’ve wanted an image of her to hang on my wall for a long, long time!!!

    Abigail,
    I could not open the link on work computer…blocked. So will read it when I get home! I was intrigued by the comment about comments in Hungarian…..because I raise vizslas (Hungarian pointers) my eyes always pick up on things referring to Hungary.
    I will find out on next Friday if Brook is pregnant…I think so but will not get my hopes up until I see those little heartbeats on the ultrasound!

    The 3-year-old son of Harlan’s Holiday took the $100,000 Aljamin overnight stakes by a neck at the New York oval when making his first start for trainer Todd Pletcher since a fifth in the March 30 Besilu Stables Florida Derby (gr. I). Owned by Starlight Racing, Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith, he was sidelined for half of the season with a pelvic fracture.

    Dear Z family Seems Atlantic Jewel lost her unbeaten record down under. Said to be the “next Black Caviar,” she was beaten by It’s a Dundeel ridden by James Macdonald who spent the summer over with us in the UK. Hugs Sheena

      Sheena. Thanks for this news although I am sorry for AJ. They refer to It’s A Dundeel as the Kiwi in the Australian papers. Hovis may have to call him next.

    Don’t know if you all have found them or not. Curlin has a great feature on his facebook page called Guess This Horse. Pretty hard at times to figure out who it is.

    Also, PennMarydel, Barbaro’s full brother, has a facebook page with pictures etc. He is a big boy-17 hands and will probably not race this year. Very nice looking guy. Here’s hoping he lives up to big brother.

      Sheena. Another handsome UK horse. He’s got El Gran Señor in his pedigree, which was the nickname of Northern Dancer’s trainer. The Dancer used to try for a bite out of his trainer when he was within range, like Hurricane Fly still does.

    Things are getting too serious around here, so I think I will post this old chestnut. A waitress in a small diner was having a particularly tough time with an obstinate customer. After about 10 minutes of complaining about the menu, the customer asked if the waitress had any recommendations. “The tongue is especially good,” said the waitress.
