Happy Tuesday!
Zenyatta’s youngest boy was weaned last week, and it all went very well. Alys sent us some photos before and after, and as you can see the boys are quite large and independent at this time. Z is happy to be back with her old friend Life Is Sweet and they definitely seem to share a bond. We’ll have more photos to share with you soon.

Max’s comment about “champion” brought back one of my favorite horses.
Gene Autry’s Champion.
Original Champion (b. circa 1926 – d. 1943)
Highlights: could untie knots, roll over and play dead, bow, shake his head “yes” and “no,” and come to Gene’s whistle

He is described as a sorrel. But, I know that he is a grand ole chestnut. BGG

And, while we are talking about favorite horses, this is a great description of Trigger by Bob Duncan (gate whisperer)
But last fall Quality Road was a basket case after “freaking out,” as some called it, at the starting gate before the richest race in North America, the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park in California. As shocked and appalled spectators and TV viewers around the world watched, Quality Road and the starting-gate crew clashed — the big horse kicking, bucking and rearing, refusing to enter the gate, and gate workers pushing, cracking a buggy whip and finally blindfolding the horse.
The battle ended when Quality Road was scratched. The next morning Pletcher called Duncan at home in Saratoga Springs. A week and a half later, with the horse back home at Belmont Park on Long Island, Duncan met Quality Road, face-to-face.
“It was the darnedest thing,” he says. “I don’t think I spent 15 or 20 minutes with him, moving him around, before I felt like I was working with Trigger or something.
“I’d wag my finger, and he would back up. Point at his shoulder, and he would do a forward pivot. I said to Todd, ‘I don’t see the problem.’ And Todd said, ‘I don’t think there is one.’ ”
The problem at the Breeders’ Cup, Duncan says, was not a starting-gate issue. It was a leadership issue.
“It’s in a horse’s nature to wake up every morning and try to advance their position in the pecking order,” he says. “They’re going to figure it out, and then they’re going to be fine with it.”

Max, As usual, thank you for posting Hovis. What a great way to start Friday. Hovis, several good laughs and a cup of coffee!

Glad to find our Hovis a bit more upbeat this week. We need to campaign for photos of him and his Mum doing these jumps. Thanks as always to Sheena via Max for our Friday fix.

Max thank you
I am really glad I started reading these. I was laughing so hard today on my lunch break. My coworkers are wondering what I am doing in my cube? I love the part about Hovis seeing the jumps and what he said. We both almost let out some …

Keta and JudyB. Morton Fink thinks that Dan looks like his mother. Maybe he’s right? Same for the other Dans and the filly. Lisa Danielle reminds me of V or Kind in her mothering abilities. Each one has produced very good racers and one super horse each, Frankel, Wise Dan and Zenyatta.

Dear Barbara,
Speaking of dogs and since you’re in TX, did you ever get to see David Hartwig’s dog Skidboot? He was so incredibly intelligent. I was sorry when he passed. Loved his performances on Animal Planet and on Oprah.

Dear Abigail,
I was enthralled by this, having never heard of her let alone her fantastic life story.
Wonderful. Thank you.

Thank you so much, Carol & MaryP! I fell in love with her all over again as I wrote. And it was hard to “let her go” — I was really under Kincsem’s spell !!!~ So pleased you liked it too!!!!

Abigail. One of the many things that I have learned from you is the name of K’s cat. Great research and superbly written. Your love of that mighty mare shines through your words. Pleasure to read as always.
Abigail_1849
Max: You’re a doll! I got the name of the cat from a Hungarian source….hence the importance of the Hungarian-English translator!!!!
Celeste_in_TX
Loved the blog post, Abigail. It was wonderful to finally learn more about Kincsem other than she recorded so many wins and remained undefeated. Your research and attention to all the details really came through and that’s why it is always such a pleasure to read your blog! Thank you for sharing!!
Abigail_1849
Thanks so much, Celeste. It’s lovely to hear from you and I so appreciate your kind words. Kincsem was just an amazing lady. It was an honour to write her story. Love & hugs

Abigail,
You brought a legend to life.
Can see her standing at the pier for 4 hours waiting for her cat companion
to come ashore. And, see her crossing the finish line still munching her

Your gift for turning research into a great read is unparalleled.

Bluegrass Girl: THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Your comments are making me BLUSH BLUSH as Zenny (Dottie) would say but are hugely appreciated! I was pleased with the collection of photos and found this great print source online….and bought the 2 prints from the Goodwood Cup of Kincsem that appear in the article! I can hardly wait until they arrive. I’ve wanted an image of her to hang on my wall for a long, long time!!!

Abigail,
I could not open the link on work computer…blocked. So will read it when I get home! I was intrigued by the comment about comments in Hungarian…..because I raise vizslas (Hungarian pointers) my eyes always pick up on things referring to Hungary.
I will find out on next Friday if Brook is pregnant…I think so but will not get my hopes up until I see those little heartbeats on the ultrasound!
Abigail_1849
Lynn: I love this breed. When my Jericho was alive one of his best friends was a vizsla. You’ll be pleased to know that Kincsem was a Hungarian thoroughbred who remains one of the best thoroughbreds who ever lived. Enjoy!
Terry Crow
Lynn-We are all anxious to hear the news.

Shanghai Bobby Victorious in Belmont Return (Article with Race Replay Video)
By Claire Novak, The Blood-Horse Updated: Friday, September 20, 2013 7:38 PM
Shanghai Bobby, the champion 2-year-old male of 2012, made his first start off nearly a six-month layoff a winning one Sept. 20 at Belmont Park (VIDEO).
The 3-year-old son of Harlan’s Holiday took the $100,000 Aljamin overnight stakes by a neck at the New York oval when making his first start for trainer Todd Pletcher since a fifth in the March 30 Besilu Stables Florida Derby (gr. I). Owned by Starlight Racing, Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith, he was sidelined for half of the season with a pelvic fracture.

Don’t know if you all have found them or not. Curlin has a great feature on his facebook page called Guess This Horse. Pretty hard at times to figure out who it is.
Also, PennMarydel, Barbaro’s full brother, has a facebook page with pictures etc. He is a big boy-17 hands and will probably not race this year. Very nice looking guy. Here’s hoping he lives up to big brother.

Sheena. Another handsome UK horse. He’s got El Gran Señor in his pedigree, which was the nickname of Northern Dancer’s trainer. The Dancer used to try for a bite out of his trainer when he was within range, like Hurricane Fly still does.

Things are getting too serious around here, so I think I will post this old chestnut. A waitress in a small diner was having a particularly tough time with an obstinate customer. After about 10 minutes of complaining about the menu, the customer asked if the waitress had any recommendations. “The tongue is especially good,” said the waitress. The customer said, “Are you kidding me? I could never eat anything that came out of an animal’s mouth.” “Well then,” said the waitress, “Can I bring you some eggs?”
