St Nicholas beginning to show signs of recovery
By Stuart Riley RacingPost.com 4 JAN 2014
TOM O’BRIEN, the surgeon at Fethard Equine Hospital overseeing St Nicholas Abbey’s recovery, has revealed the Coolmore stallion is beginning to show signs of recovery from his recent laminitis scare.
Since the initial surgery to deal with the career-ending, and potentially life-threatening, pastern fracture he sustained in July St Nicholas Abbey has been faced with, and overcome, a number of complications.

Michele Boyce on Taxi’s return from layoff (Here is the article)
Lay-up: A Time to Recharge! An Interview with Trainer Michele Boyce
January 5, 2014 by Julie Smoak Courier-Journal
Q. How do you decide to give a horse time off?
A. There are several reasons to turn a horse out. Primarily, they need a physical rest like any athlete. There might be a soreness or injury requiring rest, mental burn out or the simple fact that rest and a change of scenery can do the mind and body a world of good.
Q. Do you regularly give all of your horses time off?
A. I try to give every horse I train 2-3 months off every year. Some need more, some less.

TEN PREDICTIONS FOR 2014
With all the problems the World is facing, it can be unsettling to the mind.
Today, I share with all the Z’sters ten predictions that are true!
1. The Bible will still have all the answers.
2. Prayer will still be the most powerful thing on Earth..
3. The Holy Spirit will still move..
4. God will still honor the praises of His people.
5. There will still be God-anointed preaching.
6. There will still be singing of praise to God.
7. God will still pour out blessings upon His people.
8. There will still be room at the Cross.
9. Jesus will still love you.
10. Jesus will still save the lost when they come to Him.
Isn’t it great To Remember Who Is Really In Control, and that; “the Word of the Lord endures forever.” ( 1 Peter 1:25 )
I hope everyone finds this encouraging. Sometimes we need the reminder of just WHO is really in control.

Bluegrass Girl, it was fun to read in the LA Times article (http://www.latimes.com/sports/sportsnow/la-sp-sn-zenyatta-baby-is-growing-up-fast-20140106,0,160748.story#ixzz2pdG9alEU):
Shirreffs was beaming. It remains to be seen if Cozmic One will make his racing debut in 2014. Remember, Zenyatta was a late bloomer and perhaps her firstborn is the same.
“He’s big, he’s lean and looks like his mother,” Shirreffs said.
suewVa
Oh, I love this article from the LA Times! After seeing that precious video when it first appeared here I wondered (like many of you) what John thought of Coz. Now we have an inkling…he sees real potential in our prince! I cannot contain my enthusiasm about his future. Being Zenny’s first and handled so beautifully by LE and now the Mayberry’s Coz should be able to achieve his full potential as a racer.
Ingrid Arnone
Thank youuuuu! great link!
hugs Ingrid.
Ann NC
Big, lean, moving machine? We hope!
Thanks, Esp. Horses!
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
This is great news…..John will get him…..and he’s impressed. Can’t help but feel sorry for CoZ because he looks like Zenny so much and he’s going to be on a pedestal before he even starts. Hope we can all be patient and not expect him to repeat her history.
tony
Great post! I hear Zenny has been very busy meeting the contest winners which is probably why we haven’t seen new info. on the site. Let’s hope everyone is taking lots of pictures.
Terry Crow
If he does, it would be the most remarkable story in the history of racing. Give the guy a chance. A few Grade I wins would be fine. Just kidding.

Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
Oh, thank you for this article! I loved to see the video again, I could watch it over and over. I have always thought Coz looked more like Zenyatta although Bernadini is one handsome stallion. I am tickled to know what John S. thinks and oh my gosh, to think of Coz nearing his racing days is so exciting in a nervous kind of way for me.
I only want the best for him, so I will be pins and needles! Sally B
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
I don’t think this was already posted, but “our John” had a wire to wire winner yesterday at Santa Anita. Peace and Justice went off at 9-1 and never looked back. I think he won by something like 6 lengths. WOO HOO to P&J and his connections and especially to John of course. I think he (P&J) also won at Saratoga or Belmont before going back to California for the winter.
Sue Fl CPRC
I watched the race yesterday. He was a bit green but he ran fast. If he could calm down just a pinch. I need to see if he is in my stable. Nice to see John back and winning.

@all concerned for the 40 starving horses–thank you so much for your care and concern. Just got word today that they have been moved, thank goodness. Don’t know where, but anywhere with food is a blessing. It was 17 here this morning. Has not risen above freezing all day. I was so worried about them last night. Hugs to all and thanks.

Just got another piece of wonderful news. The state of Missouri has given up its attempt to open a horse slaughter plant there, due to public pressure. The only remaining state persisting in this evil enterprise is New Mexico. If we have any New Mexico Dumplings reading this , please contact your state officials asap to protest this inhumane venture. Thanks in advance.
Also, I just learned that the provision in the law concerning carriage horses in NYC carries with it the requirement for humane retirement for the horses. The HSUS has offered to provide lifelong care for some of them at the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, TX. That would be so awesome. It’s a long way, but I would love to go visit them there.

January 7 Cherokee Devotional
The earth is too small for all the lonely people to have missed each other so completely. But the voice of loneliness seems to persist and deepen with every hour. The Cherokee elder teaches the young person, “Learn to know and like yourself. Learn to be your own best friend.” Learn the art of enjoyable solitude-of having lunch with yourself and being comfortable about it. A person alone is unique. A lonely person shows it in his haunted stare. Sometimes loneliness comes because we have not made room for anyone else. We need to stretch beyond our boundaries, step out of familiar territory, stop nursing emptiness and self-indulgence. Loneliness is looking for something to fill a void. Joy is expanding so that others want to share our lives.
May your way be blessed with life by the unifying force of the Great Holy Spirit.

Memories of the late, great Terry Biddlecombe
07 Jan 2014 10:54 am
Terry Biddlecombe, 72, who died on Sunday, was a brilliant jumps jockey who landed the National Hunt championship three times, won the 1967 Cheltenham Gold Cup 24 hours after sustaining serious knee ligament damage and unluckily missed the winning ride in the 1970 Grand National when laid low with another injury.

@judy berube–so glad you are warm and toasty again. These low temperatures are dangerous everywhere.
@Michele Moore–I thought of you this morning when I read this quote from my Horses and Hope Calendar:
“Never forget that you are one of a kind. Never forget that if there weren’t any need for you to be on this earth, you wouldn’t be here in the first place. And never forget, no matter how overwhelming life’s challenges and problems seem to be, that one person can make a difference in the world. In fact, it is always because of one person that all changes that matter in the world come about. So be that one person.” Stay strong. Always in my thoughts and prayers. Every day.
