Cost of Freedom retired by Santa Anita clocker
By Susan Salk on December 31, 2013 Off-Track Thoroughbreds
Scanning the entries at Betfair Hollywood Park’s claiming races last week, John Malone stared in disbelief at a familiar name: Cost of Freedom. The one he calls “an original class horse,” and winner of more than a million dollars, was running for an $8,000 claiming tag at age 10.
“I just felt bad,” Malone says. “He ran third in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (in 2009) and won over a million dollars. All I could think was, ‘Why is he still here? Hasn’t he done enough?’ ”
Decades in the horse business himself— as a Thoroughbred trainer in the past and currently presiding as head clocker at Santa Anita and Del Mar, Malone has heard it said often enough that a horse long in the game “just loves to run.”

What do you all think about them trying to ban the carriage rides in New York City. Some say the horses are not treated humanely, Just saw this on the news tonight. I don’t know. I know its probably hard on their legs.
I have never seen horses that give carriage rides look like they were having a hard time. But, I know some streets are bad. Do they still do carriage rides in London? I know in Lexington they use too. I wanted to go last time I was there but didn’t get too.
Buddy use to give carriage rides in Ocala. I have to check on him. He is a Clydesdale and I know probably easier for him.
This seems to be a hot topic right now. I know we all want whats best for the horse.
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Peggy,
I think the carriage horses should be carefully tended and their treatment inspected to make sure that they are well cared for — also, would like to see safe, happy retirement at the appropriate time for each. Having said that, I would be sad to see the carriage rides banned.
Happy New Year, Peggy! Hugs
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
I think if carriage rides were banned in NYC and/or elsewhere, there would be a lot of unemployed horses. Who would take them? The Amish can’t absorb them all, and would we want them to anyway? Would the folks who enacted and/or lobbied for the ban step up to see that the horses were cared for? And what about the unemployed people?
Of course, I agree with Marshall that the horses and/or mules should be carefully tended and looked after, and that they should not work in certain conditions. But horses and mules have been pulling carts, carriages, wagons, coaches, plows, chariots, etc. for millenia. It’s not a hardship for them as long as they are not overworked..
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Laura J–I believe the Amish are among the worst offenders in sending their “used” horses to auction and thus, the slaughter pipeline. There are many rescues and advocates for the carriage horses ready to step in and take them. I just heard yesterday from one rescue in NY that has been active on that front.
One suggestion for people whose jobs depend on NYC quaint tourism is little old-fashioned looking electric cars that could be decorated in a festive way and do not depend on live animals who can get sick, break down, etc.
Marshall (NC broad)
Laura,
I wholeheartedly agree with you! What would become of these wonderful animals? Would those who want to ban these carriages look the other way when the unemployed horses/mules are sold to slaughter houses? I wonder.
Proper management and care is essential. What’s next to be banned — horseback riding or racing, certain colors, maybe?
Oh well. . .
Dawn Conrad / Colorado
Happy New Year my wonderful Dumplings!!! Thank you all for sharing your friendship with me. Together, we honor Zenyatta’s spirit each and every day. What an amazing experience it is, a priceless gift! Love, Dawn
