Happy Friday!
Todd, Zenyatta’s self-proclaimed number one fan, is traveling to each of the 50 states to raise money for cancer research. He raised more than $100,000 over the last two years by traveling to all 351 Massachusetts towns and all 169 Connecticut towns and having a beer. This year, he hopes to raise over $200,000.
Zenyatta loves supporting a good cause, and she showed her support by posing for a photo during Todd’s stop in Kentucky.
Todd’s story has been on many of the major networks like the Today Show, CNN, and FOX. Read more about Todd’s Pour Tour: www.usapourtour.com

Dear Elizabeth in NM.Mr No Ears lives in a feral colony in Albufeira Portugal. They are looked after by a wonderful lady called Lyn.She feeds and cares for hundreds of cats.Mr No Ears is the most famous he also is one-eyed and has over 20,000 friends on FB now. They are trying to build a sanctuary for elderly ferals so they can spend their last years in comfort.
Our osprey chicks should arrive next week. They already have 2 chicks at Lowes in Perthshire.Have a lovely weekend. With love Sheena.
Elizabeth in NM
Dear Sheena, Lyn must have such a kind heart. I’m not on Facebook (I know I must be one of the few on the planet), but one of these days I know I should sign up. I will still try to find Mr. No Ears online anyway. Exciting about the ospreys. We will be heading up to northern New Mexico in a week or so I think, so we’ll check on the chicks up at the lakes. Hope you have a wonderful weekend also. Isn’t Zenny’s website just the best?! with love, Elizabeth

Saw the race. Very good win. Like his blaze, it resembles a flower about to open. His momma is a full sister to Giant’s Causeway.

To all appearances, deer have springs in their feet, the wind is made of smoke and mist, the flower-covered hillside is a handpieced quilt, and the sun throws shadows of hundred-foot trees. Illusion. Some of it is real, some is mystery-u s qua ni go di.
If it is illusion, it is still a part of the beauty of anything. Shadows and subtle movements, color and striking contrasts-these are given to us for enjoyment. It tells us to enjoy but to keep a clear head-know the gentle differences but use wisdom in making firm choices. We can see nothing good-or everything beautiful. It is our choice.

Cirrus des Aigles aka CDA finished last in the Prix d’Istaphan today. Even great racers like CDA can have off days. Keep training, Cozzie. Don’t give up. The best is yet to come.

Hi all, not sure if anyone mentioned this before, but there are recent pics of Ziconic on his FB page. He’s showing off like his mom. Too cute. High hopes for Cozzie at Belmont too.

The Japanese Oaks was run earlier today…the article i read pointed out that 4 of the top 6 finishers were sired by Deep Impact….i found that the other 2 were by Manhatten Cafe…both DI and MC are sons of….you guessed it….Sunday Silence…
….
There is a saying ” you cant fix stupid”. Sometimes results of it can be seen for generations…
…
So much for my rant of the day
Z13Rulz
Carol
I’m assuming when you say “you can’t fix stupid” you are referring to American breeders allowing Sunday Silence to go to Japan? If not, I apologize for the assumption. ;)
If I am assuming correctly, perhaps a little perspective?
Sunday Silence is my favorite race horse of all time. He was such an under dog but the belief of the great Charlie Whittingham knew his stuff and Sunday Silence just captured my heart. I was heart broken when I learned he was sold, almost immediately to Japan for stallion duty and back at that time, as an American fan, I lost any visibility to him.
I was angry at the American breeders who shrugged him off and that no one would give him a chance in this country.
But after a number of years ( let’s not dwell on how many ;) ) and watching the breeding in America and the lines and the direction it’s taken, going to Japan was probably the exact thing that *made* Sunday Silence a legend.
Here in the US he would have been competing for mares against the likes of Storm Cat, Unbridled, AP Indy. Three of the TOP legacy stallions in US breeding history. Sunday Silence would not have gotten top mares and he would have been competing against dirt specialists.
In Japan, he was given all the best mares. Remember a stallion is only half and while he can improve a mare, he still needs his partner to have the credentials to live up to “Breed the Best to the Best…” Also in Japan he had the opportunity to make his mark on both turf and dirt. Japan holds turf in as high esteem as it does dirt (or at least more so than here in the States). Another factor are the blood lines he had access to, to cross over in Japan vs the mares here in the states.
Had he stayed in the States, even if he’d gotten some good mare away from Storm Cat, AP Indy and Unbridled, he probably would only have ever been a good stallion. Maybe, MAYBE he would have been on the same level as the three stallions I’ve named BUT by going to Japan, he now stands alongside the likes of Northern Dancer and other legendary producers.
So while it was sad for his fans in the short term, I look back now and can see how having gone to Japan, Sunday Silence’s name and his legacy will be around for generations of fans to enjoy.
Max
Enjoyed reading this. Very interesting.
carol in arkansas
I agree…
But in the long run the policy of “breed the best to the best and hope for the best” seems to narrow the gene pool…a lot. That allows undesirable recessive traits to surface and sometimes become part of the breed…just a stray thought..
By the way…..Sunday was/is my favorite ever also
Z13Rulz
There is a risk of bottle necking the gene pool, I agree and US breeding and racing priorities are (in my opinion) starting to dangerously bottle neck the American Thoroughbred.
In the past American breeders looked to Europe and picked up a top stallion prospect from those lines to bring over to the States. Now, the divide between our passion for dirt vs the world’s passion for turf (true turf not the putting greens we run on here) is making that less and less of a viable option.
Also we have so many stallions in the States who stand for $3000 or less, producing too many foals who ultimately wind up in dire straits when they can’t make a career out of racing.
I’m sorry but a huge pet peeve of mine is a situation like Mr. Besilu who was retired to stud on his connection to Zenyatta and her family alone, not because of anything he ever did on the track.

Except for Z ..of course

Dear Max.I am sooo happy for Al!Heard CDA broke a shoe during the race so was eased up.A filly Curvy beat Giovanni Canaletto today!Curvy is one of Coolmore’s too.Sheena.
Max
Shoes can be trouble for horse or human. Hope that he’s okay.
Al on the other hand seems to be coming into his own. He was boxed in for a good part of the race, but he pushed through handily. He deserved the win. See the young Doyle was riding. The POW will be interesting. Can see Al taking it. Grey is always a threat too.
Tizgood
Thanks for the update on Cirrus the machine, knew their had to be technical difficulties,
their is no way to hold this “old man” down. His 9 year old legs just move automatically
in high gear. I am so glad to hear he is going in the Coronation Cup and not the POW, Guess Perry Martin won out for CC with POW. I think Rae thought QA would be a better choice. CC will run against veteran turf champions in the POW rather than younger turf
champions in the QA and then that fourh of July race he will meet Cirrus possibly. I just hope the Queen pets our American HOY !!!
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.I am not sure of you’ve seen the pic of CDA’s hoof but scroll down through the photos. He’s enjoying his carrots and congratulated Al.Sheena.

Max
Thanks for this. Very good. His French is impeccable. He says that he’s already planning his revenge. Love him.
Tizgood
Dear Sheena,
That shoe really broke off, I am sure he would not be able
to run on the turf with 3/4 of it gone. Poor guy, hope he gets
his revenge !!!! The Machine forever !!!

Dear Judy.Praying for you and Lola Mae and hoping she is more comfortable.Goodnight God bless you and all the Sweeties.Love and hugs.SheenaX

Dear Z Friends
Just talked with our dear friend Judy. She told me that Lola is comfortable and not in any pain. The Pain meds are working. Judy is going to try and go into a 24 hour vet clinic tomorrow to see if she can see an orthopedic tomorrow. If not, she will go on Tuesday morning. She already went on Friday to the regular vet, but she needs to see an orthopedic for her. Its hard as tomorrow is a holiday. But, Lola is not in pain and that is a very good thing. And, she is eating with Judy giving it to her. The appt that she has for a regular orthopedic visit is for June 2that is just too long to wait.
Please pray everyone that she can get in to see one sooner. It has to do with Lola Mae’s Hip bones being displaced.
Judy loves everyone on this blog so much. Please keep them in your prayers.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks so much for the update Peggy. This is such a difficult situation, and I hope that Judy will get in to see someone who might be able to help Lola Mae sooner rather than later. We ‘re all pulling for them both!

Dear Peggy
Thanks for the update, my thoughts and prayers are with Judy and
Lola Mae.
