Happy Thursday,
We have a very special post for you today! Cozmic One has been training in New York with John Shirreffs, and today’s post is an update on his progress–straight from Dottie and John!
Enjoy!
-Team Z
Greetings from Barn 41—Belmont Park, New York!
Hello Everyone,
We hope each of you is doing very well. Everything here is moving right along. It is a beautiful fall day in New York and we thought it would be fun to share a COZMIC ONE update with you.
Coz is a big, strong, handsome colt! He loves to train and and enjoys going to the race track. He exhibits high energy levels and shows great strength and endurance. Another quality John comments about often is his intelligence. He’s a very smart colt, another trait he definitely shares with his Mother.
Physically, it is quite interesting to note how his body is changing and maturing as a result of his exercise and training program. Coz is developing a very strong shoulder and a long length of stride, two physical qualities John so admired in Zenyatta as she prepared for racing. Needless to say, it is exciting to see her colt developing them as well.
Each day’s lessons builds upon the prior skills taught. Coz has breezed a ½ mile in company twice galloping out with energy, as well as working on his starting gate lessons. He’s currently jogged out of the gate twice and will continue to do more gate work as he gets closer to running. Physically and mentally, Coz is developing a very solid foundation in all skills so necessary for his future career as a racehorse.
Cozmic One is a very busy guy each day. Here’s this morning:
5:30 a.m. Coz is up and looking out of his stall ready to begin his day. He is hand-walked for about 30 minutes each morning.
6:00 a.m. Coz is now back in his stall and gets brushed and ready for his breakfast. He loves to eat!
8:15 a.m. He is tacked up and ready to walk to the paddock to begin his exercise on the main track. At Belmont Park, it is a long walk from our barn to the paddock and Coz enjoys doing this. It helps him ‘warm up’ and he gets a chance to see everything going on and experience all types of noises and sounds that happen at the race track. Once in the paddock, he walks around, stands in a saddling stall for a bit, and gets to experience this environment.
8:45 a.m. Coz leaves the paddock to walk through the tunnel to the main track. Once on the main track, he stands for a few minutes and then walks to the 1 ¼ pole (Belmont is a 1 ½ mile oval), turns and jogs to the ⅞ pole, and then gallops 1 ½ miles at a very good pace.
He then stands for a few moments preparing to leave the main track and begin his walk back to the barn.
10:15 a.m. Once back at the barn, Coz continues to cool out by walking around the shed row. He has a bath and returns to his stall for further grooming.
11:00 a.m. IT’S LUNCH TIME! This is truly one of his favorite times of the day! Coz is definitely a good eater who has a very good appetite. One of his favorite treats are the Apple Cookies the Mosses send to the barn for him and his pals. He absolutely LOVES them!
It is so special having Coz in the barn. Having worked with Zenyatta and having her with us each day for so many years, it is a complete JOY to get to know her son so intimately and work with him every day. As John commented last night, “At this time, I could not be more pleased with his progress.”
As Zenyatta would say, this is TOO CUTE! Without a doubt, she would be very proud of him!
Have a wonderful week!
With Love,
Hugs to all~
Coz, John and Dottie

Dear Sheena,
Enjoy the mild day while you may. I really enjoyed the piece on Tom. Animals are so intuitive. They put us to shame very often. Over 500,000 for “our Joey.” That’s something to be getting likes after you’ve passed. Yes, that was a cute pic of Boo and Martin Sheen. “Sheena Sheen” lol. I’ve actually know a Rick Ricks and also a Robert Robertson. Pretty funny. Marty never fails to entertain. “The Dash” was a very appropriate poem for Uncle Connie’s memorial service. Can’t you just imagine dear little Zoe right there at the guest book, behaving so beautifully? What a special little girl she is. Her Mommy and Daddy were so lucky to find her at Ruby Ridge. Fingers crossed for a successful visit to the doctor for Fubu. He was pretty funny as a ghost. I can’t wait to hear about Cindy with her Freedom Wheels. What a wonderful vision to provide these carts for dogs in need.
Amen…bless Mango and Judy. Have a good Monday turtling and a good week. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy.

MarypNY you are in my prayers. Disappointed that Beholder is out of BC but her health is the most important thing. Loved the photo of Jim Rome being presented to the Queen. Have I mentioned that Jackie is getting BIG? I came home yesterday and found him stretched out on my bed. And he wouldn’t move! Just because Cotton sleeps on the end of the bed he thinks he should have the same privilege. I’m a pushover.
Pattie
THANK YOU for the updates & photos of The Handsome Cozmic One. He sure has grown up & looking good !!

Just read Steve Haskins article about Blame and now I feel so guilty. Though I felt as if my heart was broken I never blamed Blame or wished him ill. Any other Classic he would have been greeted with acclaim. He just happened to come up against a solid wall of love. Yes, I do believe on any other day Zenyatta would have beaten him and yes she deserved HOY. I hope he lives a long life and passes on his talent to his progeny.

Another masterpiece from Steve Haskin!
Haskin: Time to Give Blame His Due
Steve Haskin Hangin’ with Haskin The Blood-Horse Oct. 20 2014
To most everyone, the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic was a punch in the gut, the end of a magical run that brought an eerie hush to the crowd at Churchill Downs. Even after four years, many still find it difficult to watch Zenyatta’s spectacular run from last fall a head short of catching a courageous Blame. Unfortunately, this Classic will always be remembered as the race Zenyatta lost and not the race Blame won. And that is sad.

Excerpt from article:
Most people do not know the real Blame, nor do they know how talented a horse he really was. Having been involved with horseracing for 47 years and having been close to most of the greats during that period I have to say that Blame was one of the kindest, most intelligent horses I have ever had the pleasure to be around. Looking at those big bright eyes and that slight dish face still brings a smile to my face. But on the racetrack he was a warrior, demonstrating his tenacity and will to win in his victories in the grade I Whitney and Stephen Foster Handicaps, as well as the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
SallyB.(AuntiecherishesZandheryoung)
I was able to visit with Blame a year after the race. I padded him and gave him carrots. I liked him, felt a bit sorry for him. Blame did what he was meant to do and his jockey was able to run him pretty much along the rail with out others interfering. Blame ran like a champ and did his job well. It is unfortunate for Blame that Zenyatta ran the most UNBELIEVABLE race I believe she ever ran and caught up from so far back and yes lost by a nose/head. Perhaps we blamed Blame. It was because how Z performed.
It was it our hearts that Zenyatta won that race!! I will never take his race away from him though.

Yes, he does have a sweet face, Hope to meet him some day. I won’t hold it against him, as I thought Zenny did the most work in that race than she had ever had to do. She was fabulous.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Blame also doesn’t like it when peeps pay too much attention to War Front (in the next paddock at Claiborne). We definitely got the message :-). And gave him lots of pets too!

I still believe, if not for QR, Zenyatta would have won this race. I never blamed, Blame, LOL, he is a great horse who did his job. I too felt sorry for him, at his retirement, no one was there for him. He is a beautiful horse, wonder if he would be a good fit for a date with the Queen? Lisag

Interesting article – thanks for linking – I had not read this yet. As usual, this is one of Steve’s really thought provoking blogs, but I will have to admit I still have a hard time watching replays and accepting the outcome of that race. While I do agree that Zenyatta only added to her greatness that night, I still just cannot warm up to Blame. I will always wish him well and hope he has a great stallion career and I am appalled at the people who would hold bad feelings and send threats to him and or Claiborne. There is no shortage of stupid people out there, though. I didn’t take the time this morning to read through all the comments on Steve’s blog, but I’m sure there were some good ones.

Looked at the photos but did not read that article on Blame. Personally I’d like to read more articles on Zenyatta. Never get enough of them.

In 100 years and beyond, the 2010 Classic will be remembered as it is now and always will be: Zenyatta’s finest racing moment, her tour de force of courage and charisma.

Having personally witnessed that race we agree it was her finest. The courage Zenny exhibited that day silenced her loudest critics. She was the best horse on the track that day bar none.
SallyB.(AuntiecherishesZandheryoung)
Sue F and I were there too!! Zenyatta was Unbelievable……..to see her pick up speed, pass all the male horses leaving them in the breeze, and to miss the win by a nose/head. It was so close, we were not sure at first.
This was a magnificient moment!!

Max,
The race reminds me of the Belmont where Birdstone beat Smarty. I loved Smarty and was hoping for a Triple Crown, but you can’t take anything away from Birdstone, he won and was the better horse that day.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Shirlee,
I loved Smarty Jones, too. It broke my heart to see him beaten in the Belmont Stakes. He almost had it won, but Birdstone was there and probably was fresher without the grind of the first two races. I was sad.
I was sad when Blame held on by the slimmest of margins, too. Zenyatta was magnificent! Nothing against Blame; he is a fine horse, but Z is the Queen!

I watched the Canadian Invitational on Sat. & was scared for Panther running off like that. I was impressed by the beautiful course. I prefer dirt racing but admire the stamina of the runners in that race. I’m back from my summer at the cottage–with no INTERNET– and it took some time to get caught up with all the goings-on in Zenyatta land. I missed all of the posters to this site & am glad to be back.

It was so wonderful to hear from the “voice” of Zenyatta again. While I very much appreciate this site for giving up updates, photos and video, the personal joyful words of the lovely Dottie are greatly missed. Made me smile for the first time since learning of Cigar’s death. I have nostalgia for the good ole days with Dottie. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
I did promise to share more of Cigar’s last day at the KHP when I got the battery I lost at Keeneland replaced. Includes video and photos of last few years and his last day. I’ve never had any horse not owned by my family or friends die that hurt so much.

Now I’m going to show my Downunder ignorance, so please forgive.
On the previous page Max mentions the Brown Panther race and makes the comment that the Euros don’t use ponies, they are often on their own or have walkers (and apologies for any misquote Max). Here’s my question. Are ponies used to take horses to the start in all races in the USA/Canada or just major ones? And who provides the ponies, the connections or the stewards? Cheers KathyR
Max
KathyR. They always use ponies here to take the horses to the gate. The theory is that it keeps them calm. Some horses have their own ponies who go with them or they often use trained ponies who work at the track. Some of these ponies are famous ex racehorses like Lava Man who have new careers. In Panther’s case, the jockey got off to try to settle him and was told by the stewards that he could not lead the horse. The rules in NA require horses to carry their assigned weight to the gate. When the jockey got on Panther again, the Panther tossed him and went off on his run. He ran around the starting gate and onto the turf track, and was gone. It took two outriders to get him. In a way this was more exciting than the actual race which was delayed until Panther came back. He was then scratched.
KathyR
Thanks for that info Max. Downunder we use the clerk of course horse to escort “problem” horses to the starting gate, but usually the jockeys just go onto the course and proceed to the gate under their own steam. Some really fizzy types are allowed to avoid the mounting yard/parade ring and go directly to the starting gate. As an aside, my little girl, on her last race start, threw her jockey in the mounting yard three times, and was led to the start by her trainer, with the jockey accompanying them on foot. I do like the idea of ex racehorses having a role though. Some of our clerk of course horses are ex racehorses, like the famous little grey Subzero, who won a Melbourne Cup. Brown Panther was a possible starter for the Spring Racing Carnival this year in Melbourne, but the connections decided the travel was too far (understandable) and they had better options in North America. Thanks again for the information. Cheers KathyR
Max
KathyR. The horse who ponied Chromie in the KD was Perfect Drift, a son of Big D. Won about $5 million as a racehorse. He is an impressive looking horse. I have to admit that I spent more time looking at him in the post parade than Chromie. Somehow I cannot see Big D ever doing that kind of work.

Enjoyed the Steve Haskin article on Blame.
I find it disturbing as much as we love Zenyatta, that there were some folks that felt threats towards Blame were necessary. We can be disappointed and sad, but anger is not justified in my opinion.
I saw Blame on my trip and I went up to him and told him I love Zenyatta and it made me sad that he beat my girl, but I hold no grudge against him. He fixed his eyes on me as if he understood what I told him.
He is a very nice stallion and does like attention. Once he saw the group coming, he ran across his paddock and waited for us to get done admiring War Front. He would nicker and throw his head up and down like he was saying “enough with that guy already.”
I wish him well in his breeding career.
Ashton
I completely agree with you about Blame. What day were you at Claiborne? I was there less than two weeks ago. We always go there every April and October and sometimes in between. I’m so glad you got to visit . This last time, while getting some photos and video of all their Champion-Stallions my mission was to get to see Seeking the Gold (SARBONNE’S Sire) again…after begging and offering half my life’s savings I was blessed with about 3 minutes with him. When I have time I’ll upload and share my most recent visit. One of my favorites will always be the very first time I met BLAME in 2012. He thought he was being brought out to ‘cover a mare’ and the video speaks for itself. I told him I love him “anyway.” Like Steve Haskin, I found him to be a very remarkable horse. In my heart Zenyatta will always be the winner (yes, I know the facts) but sadly Blame may never get the respect he Earned. For me, meeting him was a true spiritual experience….and then there is the very old, ailing, aging (Sarbonne’s Sire) Seeking the Gold….I begged, bribed and more to get to see him two weeks ago. This is raw footage of the tour including Arch (Blame’s Sire) , The LATE GREAT PULPIT, and Eddington (now in LA)…..and graves of those we’ve lost at Claiborne Farms.

Sorry the above reads like it is this years footage….It’s raw video of the tour from 2012. With Arch, Pulpit, Eddington, and BLAME -very frisky thinking he was being brought out to ‘cover a mare.’

Ashton,
You brought back memories as my BFF and I were there a couple of years ago and so enjoyed visiting CLairborne and the stallions. They were all beautiful of course, poor Blame was not appreciated, as you say, and even received hate mail after the BC. But I am so glad I got to see the magnificent PULPIT, just gorgeous, as now he is gone. Thanks for the video. hugs
Janet Newman
Ashton.
Love the video. I loved Pulpit and after he died I made my mind up that I was going to Kentucky and visit the farm. I was there on October 4th. Rodeo was our tour guide and I really thought he did a great job. A few of us that had lingered after the tour and he was kind enough to take us back to see Arch.
I saw Seeking the Gold from a distance. I cried when I got to the cemetery and saw Pulpit’s final resting place. So many greats in that cemetery.

Dear Janet and Z Fans:
It is important, I think, to learn how to lose graciously. Another attribute possessed by Team Z.
Blame ran a very good race, however it was pretty obvious to me that had Z another furlong of track, she would have gone right by him. To dislike Blame for winning makes no sense. He ran his race. Love and Hugs, JB
Linda in NJ
Thanks for posting the link on Blame. I thought it was a great article. That BC Classic will be talked about for many years to come.
Of course my heart was with Zenyatta, but I thought the Racing Gods in the end were fair because each horse and their owners got what they really wanted. Zenyatta and team wanted to win Horse of the Year, and the Racing Gods did not deny her that. But after a 100 years in the business it meant so much to Claiborne Farms to win that BC Classic on the year of their 100th anniversary. The Racing Gods wanted Blame to win in celebration of 100 years of history.
So when you look back the Racing Gods were fair and as fate would have it both horses and owners got what they wanted.
I met Blame at the Claiborne Farm about a year ago. If I have the good fortune of seeing him again, I will really appreciate him.
Linda
Kathy
RE Blame…he did what no other horse could do. For that alone you have to give him credit and admire him.

All of my admiration goes to Zenyatta always. As to credit, my cards are already maxed out on Z merchandise. Looking at her print right now. Z, you are the best. Beautiful Queen of Racing has forever captured my heart.

Kathy
Dear Max and Judy,
I admire that Blame ran a very good race and held out. The finish line just came up too soon. You’re right, Judy. A few more strides and she would have passed him. I will be a loyal subject to Zenyatta forever. I was devastated that she didn’t get her 20-20. But to blame Blame is pointless.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy:
You are so right. Zenyatta was the best horse in that race but, Blame is not to blame. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
No one with any sense blames this horse for winning. The point is that Zenyatta came out of that race as the most popular horse, incredibly even more popular after than before the race, with all the more admiration for her courageous, jaw dropping late run. Blame on the other hand got his win. That’s it. It appears difficult to know what giving him his due means other than that. Why provide attention on Z’s own website to a horse who denied her a perfect record when that space could be given to Zenyatta herself? Unless I am totally wrong and need correction, Blame will never reach anywhere near her status or her ever expanding fan base. She always has been and will always remain a super star horse. That’s her due.

We live with memories. Every day, in some way or other, we are influenced by something or someone from the past. A deep reservoir of feelings and emotions make us dedicated to preserve some of what was and is important and u wo du hi, beautiful. But this is a new day in which to renew. We have a purpose or we wouldn’t be here. Part of it is to make every hour count. We can’t kill time without hurting ourselves, without wasting something very precious. Events that leave us drained may be to put us in line to take hold of a whole new way of life. Life will not destroy the memories but will preserve them to serve as a foundation for greater things to come.

Dear Judy.Nissy’s sister Tess has got a sore eye.Spent the morning at the vets and is on metacam. She’s laying on a chair with a huge teddy and is very annoyed to be housebound for 3 days.Nissy has cotton wool in his ears so as not to hear the meowing!Love and hugs SheenaX
