Happy Thursday,
We have a very special post for you today! Cozmic One has been training in New York with John Shirreffs, and today’s post is an update on his progress–straight from Dottie and John!
Enjoy!
-Team Z
Greetings from Barn 41—Belmont Park, New York!
Hello Everyone,
We hope each of you is doing very well. Everything here is moving right along. It is a beautiful fall day in New York and we thought it would be fun to share a COZMIC ONE update with you.
Coz is a big, strong, handsome colt! He loves to train and and enjoys going to the race track. He exhibits high energy levels and shows great strength and endurance. Another quality John comments about often is his intelligence. He’s a very smart colt, another trait he definitely shares with his Mother.
Physically, it is quite interesting to note how his body is changing and maturing as a result of his exercise and training program. Coz is developing a very strong shoulder and a long length of stride, two physical qualities John so admired in Zenyatta as she prepared for racing. Needless to say, it is exciting to see her colt developing them as well.
Each day’s lessons builds upon the prior skills taught. Coz has breezed a ½ mile in company twice galloping out with energy, as well as working on his starting gate lessons. He’s currently jogged out of the gate twice and will continue to do more gate work as he gets closer to running. Physically and mentally, Coz is developing a very solid foundation in all skills so necessary for his future career as a racehorse.
Cozmic One is a very busy guy each day. Here’s this morning:
5:30 a.m. Coz is up and looking out of his stall ready to begin his day. He is hand-walked for about 30 minutes each morning.
6:00 a.m. Coz is now back in his stall and gets brushed and ready for his breakfast. He loves to eat!
8:15 a.m. He is tacked up and ready to walk to the paddock to begin his exercise on the main track. At Belmont Park, it is a long walk from our barn to the paddock and Coz enjoys doing this. It helps him ‘warm up’ and he gets a chance to see everything going on and experience all types of noises and sounds that happen at the race track. Once in the paddock, he walks around, stands in a saddling stall for a bit, and gets to experience this environment.
8:45 a.m. Coz leaves the paddock to walk through the tunnel to the main track. Once on the main track, he stands for a few minutes and then walks to the 1 ¼ pole (Belmont is a 1 ½ mile oval), turns and jogs to the ⅞ pole, and then gallops 1 ½ miles at a very good pace.
He then stands for a few moments preparing to leave the main track and begin his walk back to the barn.
10:15 a.m. Once back at the barn, Coz continues to cool out by walking around the shed row. He has a bath and returns to his stall for further grooming.
11:00 a.m. IT’S LUNCH TIME! This is truly one of his favorite times of the day! Coz is definitely a good eater who has a very good appetite. One of his favorite treats are the Apple Cookies the Mosses send to the barn for him and his pals. He absolutely LOVES them!
It is so special having Coz in the barn. Having worked with Zenyatta and having her with us each day for so many years, it is a complete JOY to get to know her son so intimately and work with him every day. As John commented last night, “At this time, I could not be more pleased with his progress.”
As Zenyatta would say, this is TOO CUTE! Without a doubt, she would be very proud of him!
Have a wonderful week!
With Love,
Hugs to all~

I had a nice walk with Ash yesterday morning and he was so sweet and relaxed. Then an old friend of his came and took him out for a walk and grass in the afternoon. She hadn’t seen him since May. She called me and said that he was SO HAPPY and moving really LOOSELY and asked what we had been doing.I said, just lots of exercise and love.
Last year he was so stiff at one point, happy he is feeling good . He will be out on the trail now with his pals. We never know what is around the corner.Just happy for today.

Dear debbie.s
You’re so right – we never know what is around the corner. Love hearing about your walks, or the walks Ash takes with others. I’ve said before, that’s my dream with my little girl, to just go for a stroll around the property. Hope your back problem is resolving faster than predicted. Hugs KathyR

Hello Zenyatta and all who love you. I love you with all my heart and I am so happy that your spirit inspired me to find all those who love you too.
I have a serious disability/condition and lucky to still be here with all of you Zsters . It has been over 4 years that I have following this wonderful mare and her babies. I don’t know how long I have on this earth but I do know that I have been blessed to know all of you, Team Z, Lanes’ End, all of you wonderful dumplings/Zsters. Whatever time is left for me I pray I can see Coz or Zi or Z Princess show their mother and sire proud and honor the great mare that she is. I thank the Lord that I have known you and have felt love.

JudyB. I’ve been off line for a few days. Don’t know why. Paid the bills. Printer not working but the iPad now is.
Watched the Canadian International. Most interesting part was Brown Panther running his own race. This kind of thing happens fairly often at Woodbine. Horses love bolting, jumping the fences and heading back to see their buds in the barns. Doesn’t usually happen however to horses at this level. The Panther arrived early in Toronto. Might have got too comfortable with the horsey lifestyle there. Thought Big Blue Kitten ran a very good race. He was coming for Hillstar, but ran out of real estate. Good horse, and a chestnut.
Hope Dubai is still progressing.
Noble Mission, you are amazing. You are a larger version of Northern Dancer, same blaze, same socks.
Moose, pull a Panther.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Oh my God, you gave us a scare. So happy you’re back. Have to watch the replay of the Canadian International. Like Big Blue Kitten too. Knew you would be thrilled for NM.
This is Dubai this afternoon checking out what’s going on at the farm. Alex took him for a walk this morning. He’s obviously still sore and walking gingerly. He get’s a bit wobbly in the stall, but he’s been up and standing all day and eating really well. Still on antibiotic and pain meds. So glad all is well with you.

Oh Dear Boy. So wonderful to see him up. Keep Powering Up Dubai……….
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Peggy:
Yes, we were all so glad to see him looking out of his stall and being nosy. He enjoyed some mints too. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. No worries ever. Unfortunately, you won’t see Brown Panther putting on his one horse show. It was pretty remarkable. He was angry, and he did not take long to toss his rider and get out of Dodge. He ran a quite beautiful race on his own, a real bad boy on a charge. It took two outriders to snare him. You will however see in the race that Big Blue was gaining on Hillstar. I’m losing it. Big Blue is a good looking bay like his momma. His dad is a chestnut.
If Dubai is up walking and eating, things are going in the right direction. Happy for him, you and all concerned.
Moose, bolt away from the beak.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
So missed your witty descriptions and comments. Wow, Brown Panther was channeling Big D. Well, all can’t be members of the Chestnut Club; but Big Blue is splendid in his Bay coat.
Yes, Dubai is getting there. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. His owner said later that this was out of character for Brown Panther. Not certain what riled him up, but he was upset big time. Those Euros do not use ponies so that the horses are often lead by walkers or are on their own. In this case, the Panther did not take part in the post parade with the other horses, came out late on the track and gave his rider the old heave hoe pretty quickly. The jockey lay for a minute or two on the turf, but seemed okay because he limped off on his own. They even had to remove the starting gate from the course in order to get the Panther back. At the end of the race, they asked the winner Ryan Moore if that kind of thing happened often in the UK and he said: all of the time. Think he was joking, but maybe not? All of the other horses were totally unfazed by the Panther. He actually rejoined them after his bolt before the start of the race. It was quite a sight. This is what makes racing unpredictable.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Unpredictable, indeed. Glad Brown Panther and his jockey are OK. Unbelievable that he came back to join them before the start. Wonder what spooked him. Could have been anything; even a shadow. Just watched the replay. Nice closing effort by Big Blue. Congrats to Hillstar and RM. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Max
Oh so happy to see you back. My boy Night Prowler won his race Friday. He was wonderful and you were so right about Javiar. A wonderful new Chestnut to root for. He was fantastic. I was over the moon.

Peggy. Congrats to NP. Love those chestnuts.

Dear Max.Welcome home!We were all worried about you!!What a wonderful weekend of racing!Great night at Woodbine for us!As for yesterday and Noble Mission I was in tears it really was a fairytale ending to the Champions meeting!Hope your internet problems are resolved.I left a message on previous page about the New One winning today at Kempton.Good to have you back.Free the Moose!Sheena
Max
Sheena. Good weekend all around for UK invaders at Woodbine. Maybe now you will accept that Woodbine is like a Euro turf track? It most closely resembles Newbury. Little wonder that those Brit horses excel on it. Glad that the Panther is okay. I kind of like him. BTW they were racing on lasix.
Thanks for news of The New One. Heard also that The Fly is coming back. CDA is heading to Japan to race.
Free the Moose.
Ann NC
The Fly, yip, yip, yippeee!
Watch that backside, Willie.
Max, thought maybe you and Dan were taking in a rodeo with Charlie.
Great racing at Woodbine. My favorite jock was there and got a 2nd on Disco Barbie. Beautiful track!
Max
Ann NC. I’ve been out buying get well cards and gifts for the most interesting horse in the world. Dan, heal that hoof! You’ve still got butts to kick.

Dear Judy
It was oh so wonderful to get to see Gabby Today. Although, I was a nervous wreck. Think she’s too close to my heart to see her race, but have to be there with her. I kept telling her I was with her. She’s just my girl and always will be. Thank you so much for telling me about the new horse racing ap. Love it. Love my new I phone too, but still have so much to learn about it. Just love it.
Judy, I followed Gabby’s every move today.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Peggy:
Yes, I know, pins and needles. Hope Gabby came out of the race well. I know she’s your special girl. Glad you like the Horse Races Now App. I’m still learning about my phone too and I’ve had it for quite a while. Love and Hugs, JB

Beholder will miss Breeders’ Cup
Jennie Rees, Courier-Journal October 19, 2014
The Breeders’ Cup lost its second major star in less than a week two-time champion Beholder out after developing a fever Sunday morning.
Daily Racing Form first reported Beholder’s defection.
Trainer Richard Mandella told The Courier-Journal that after a big workout Saturday morning, Beholder seemed depressed Sunday and that by mid-morning her temperature had elevated to “over a 104. So we had to go ahead and treat her —and that’s it.”

2014 QIPCO Champions Stakes – Noble Mission
Racing UK Published on Oct 18, 2014
Lady Cecil was clearly moved as she watched Noble Mission win the 2014 QIPCO British Champions Stakes with Jockey James Doyle. What ended up as a close two horse race between Noble Mission and Al Kazeem but Noble Mission finished stronger to take first.

Beautiful win for this horse. He took some brutal criticism in his early days, but he has really bloomed at 5. Al Kazeem was great too. He is returning to his old form. Love him. CDA, you just keep on rolling.

Dear BGG, Max, Sheena and Z Fans:

Dear Max.Yes,we do get horses that bolt over in the UK not quite as often as Ryan said!!.I have to admit the woodbine track is lovely for the UK horses,Must feel like home to them.As for the Lasix when in Rome??Have’nt heard about CDA thought he would have raced better yesterday on the soft ground .I was very proud of Al Kazeem.Moose run like the Panther!!Sheena.
Max
Sheena. This was a grade 1 race, so that a major bolt was kind of unusual for Woodbine. As bolts go, it was definitely grade 1. It seemed like the Panther ran the entire EP Taylor race course before the actual race. That is a mile and a half. He looked pretty darn good doing it too. He’s a very nice looking horse. The Toronto Star is reporting tonight that the Panther threw his exercise rider on Friday. Something is on his mind. Maybe he could have a neigh with the Moose? They both may need to learn to race during a race.
Beak, give the Moose a chance.

@Kathy R–thanks for the photos of Thurzel.
@ Judy B.–ditto for Dubai photo and video. Hope you can find some answers for how to prevent the problem from happening again.
Power up, Beholder. We are pulling for you. Hugs to all.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Barb W.:
We’re thinking that once all of the abscesses have popped and drained, Dubai won’t have a problem. Our theory (only that because it can’t be proven) is that he was injected in the feet with steroids to keep him racing (he raced multiple times in the months of May (twice), July and August (twice each) and September (three times) 2014 and abscesses popped up in the injection sites because they got infected. We think he may have been given something else too which contributed to suppressing his immune system. Being able to just be a horse and with some TLC, hopefully Dubai will not have recurrences of abscesses on his feet. We’ll take one day at a time and be grateful for each little improvement in him. Love and Hugs, JB
KathyR
Would like to give that so-called trainer an abscess or two.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
The “theory” sounds very plausible Judy. Without the steroids (both the medication itself and the injection sites), he won’t be so susceptible in the future. Thinking of you and your brood :-)

Thank you. Love and Hugs, JB

Welcome back! I missed the race too and enjoyed watching Noble Mission dig deep to win.You could see the moment the other horse was coming up to him and he lowered his head and said,”Not today”. What a gutsy race,I get nervous when they lead the whole way. Congratulations Noble Misson. Glad you are back Max, love to read the posts with you and Sheena about the UK horses.

Fabulous, ferocious duel sends Ascot into raptures
Alastair Down on a day of magic that reconnected us with a training great and his horse of a lifetime
RacingPost. com 18 Oct. 2014
IT’S MORE than 300 years since they began clearing the Heath to start Ascot’s incarnation as a racecourse, but yesterday’s epic of a Champion Stakes would have to take very high rank among the great encounters this place has witnessed down the centuries.
We all know racehorses are extraordinary animals with an uncanny power to enthral, but sometimes they seem to push the boundaries of what we know they are capable of into fresh territory.
And as the tectonic plate-shifter of a duel between Noble Mission and Al Kazeem boiled to its climax it was one of those enriching moments that made you give humble thanks that some time in the past you were lucky enough to take the racing road, because it can lead you to places other sports cannot reach.

Bluegrass Girl
From article:
None here will forget the day Frankel’s brother, the blood of his greatness roaring in his ears, triumphed in one of the most unforgiving confrontations seen on this course since Grundy and Bustino wrote their undying chapter in our racing story.
Noble Mission and Al Kazeem were genuine heroes yesterday. A lasting reminder that while the racehorse is about class, stamina and speed, it sometimes rises above that to something else – courage incarnate.

October 20 Cherokee Devotional
The crickets know that summer is over. They hide in tall grasses to see-saw out an autumn tune. No longer spry in the legs, one of them staggers out of hiding, to crawl over a grasshopper that has already sung its finale. Amid the changes, long-awaited rains bring out an abundance of sunflowers, spikes of pink thistles and the purple plumes of elegant blazing star. It is a rebirth of an earlier blooming season when there was less time to enjoy it.Cooler air brings out the elusive doe with her half-grown fawn to feed in the fescue field. Raccoons leave tiny handprints on the moist earth around the pond, and ‘possums make a beeline to the persimmon trees. Watching the new season come in with such peace is a da na li s da yv hu s gv-feast for the soul.
